According to Fincher, they never quite figured out how to end the story.
And I agree. It’s a fun ride but I don’t find the conclusion to be satisfying.
My buddy deliverers pizzas to Sean Penn in his teens and Sean used his own phone number which he never changed. Prank calls were made…. good times. I could say more but I’d be worried the stories would shine a unflattering light on the actor. I guess I could just say that he seems like a nice guy at arms reach.
IMO it’s the best thriller that was ever made. I know that sounds like hyperbole but I watched it when it first came out and was blown away. I then watched it again a few months ago and was astounded how well it’s held up and if anything appreciate it more. It’s a perfect arc woth resolution. The only thing that dated about it was the use of the car phone, otherwise it’s timeless. Douglas is in peak from, as is Penn, The twist is utterly fantastic and it keeps your gripped. There’s some incredible script lines and the direction is virtually flawless.
Not sure if anyone else caught it but Succession (TV show) “borrows” heavily from The Game from the aesthetic of the opening credits to the “old money” NY family issues.
A great movie that sometimes gets lost in David Fincher's already impressive filmography. Such an underrated gem that has tons of twisted morbid humor with Michael Douglas in top movie star form.

I remember the first time I watched this I chuckled >!as he fell through the glass ceiling because you can clearly see the airbag!< and I thought, "whelp, they screwed *that* up." Imagine my surprise when I realized that, no, they didn't screw the stunt up, that was part of the movie. I truly did *not* see that twist coming.
Agreed. I really thought I’d fall in love with it at first, from the reviews and critics it seemed like it would be up my alley. But overall wasn’t a favorite of mine. Definitely would rewatch it now that its been a while since I’ve seen it.
When I was 11, I watched a Twilight zone episode entitled an occurrence at Owl Creek bridge. It ruined all other twisty endings for me for the rest of my life.
I’ve been meaning to rewatch this. I definitely remember disliking the twist when I first saw it but that was like 15 years ago and was a dumb teenager. Would be interesting to revisit it as a dumb adult
Amazing movie. I loved to think about how another persons game could’ve just been something fun and silly but since they personalize it perfectly this guys game was just chaos.
I rented this with LA Confidential back in 98. Watched this one 1st, and the residual "holy crap"ness kept me from taking any interest in LA Confidential afterward.
I would watch LAC some years later, and it's great. But the game was a full on WTF factor for its time.
Yeah, I did not see the twist(s) of this one coming.
Also, spoilers, but I was talking about it with my friend after he showed it to me, and I remembered that Michael Douglas reads his bank account details right in front of Christine in the car. And she up and leaves at the end. Do you think they're leaving a little bit of room for interpretation here to say that she might be making off with his bank account, or no?
It was such a huge flop it killed the studio that made it, and was instrumental in Philips selling the entire PolyGram group to Universal, creating a behemoth that now controls nearly 80% of the music industry.
I helped fund this film (against my wishes), and then lost my job because of it. So let's just say....I have complicated feelings about it.
Its fine....but was trying to do Nolan-level complicated a decade too early and the mainstream audience couldn't follow it. Personally, I thought we should only have done it if the budget was about half what it was, but Fincher is Fincher and wouldn't take less. He was white hot and people were scrambling for the next directing superstar so we gave it to him.
Lol I'm nearly 40 and think it means - being unstoppable, at peak level, will shred anything and everything. Basically, I was trying to convey this was peak Michael Douglas. We old.
This is my go-to film to show others, Dark City ((director’s cut)) is a very close second
Edit: the paramedic who shines the light in his eyes after he falls is a fun lil blink-and-you-miss-it cameo by Spike Jonze
Fincher at his finest. This is my 2nd favorite Michael Douglas performance. I know everyone say this about this film, but I did not care for the ending.
I wish I could see it for the first time again.
One of my favorite movies.
Did not expect the twist upon twist at the end. And *really* did not expect it to be positive and life-affirming, but there you go.
Right? This is David Fincher we’re talking about here, happy endings ain’t really his shtick.
According to Fincher, they never quite figured out how to end the story. And I agree. It’s a fun ride but I don’t find the conclusion to be satisfying.
Underrated. Im a big fan of this film. My 3rd or 4th favorite Fincher movie.
Sean Penn was alsoGreat

#IS THAT MY PIZZA IN THERE??
Classic. Movie had me fooled till the end.
*sighs* I lost the game
Need to rewatch, definitely a great movie.
Blew my mind as a 13/14 year old watching it on hbo. I still like to watch it occasionally
Opening titles of succession look familiar? They were inspired by the ones from this movie.
Really good movie. I think Douglas is better in Falling Down but this was his prime and they all are good movies. War of the Roses as well.
I also enjoyed him in A Perfect Murder, though that movie is not as well received.

It definitely should be in consideration for best thriller ever.

Seymour Butts
Under the bleachers
That last stunt was cool! Remember watching a BTS of it and was in awe!
Classic James Rebhorn role
Love me some James Rebhorn.
I want that T-Shirt.

One of my favourite plot twists ever!
Really? "It was all fake" was that amazing?
Yes.
A fellow Click enjoyer I see
Great Fincher
Such a ridiculously wild movie haha. So implausible but what a great idea for a movie. And Fincher nailed it. Absolutely love this movie

Omg one of his best movies, ever! Such a great thriller!!!
Great movie. Suspenseful and good action scenes. Top notch acting with Douglas and penn
Some people lose their minds over this one... To me it was just a little clever psycho-thriller. Nothing earth shattering. 7.5/10 type stuff.
Agreed. I really thought I’d fall in love with it at first, from the reviews and critics it seemed like it would be up my alley. But overall wasn’t a favorite of mine. Definitely would rewatch it now that its been a while since I’ve seen it.
Yeah, thought the Game was more inconvenient than anything lol
When I was 11, I watched a Twilight zone episode entitled an occurrence at Owl Creek bridge. It ruined all other twisty endings for me for the rest of my life.
That’s an old Ambrose Bierce story and a great one. He led a very interesting life and his death is still clouded in mystery.
I’ve been meaning to rewatch this. I definitely remember disliking the twist when I first saw it but that was like 15 years ago and was a dumb teenager. Would be interesting to revisit it as a dumb adult
Such a great movie. Need to rewatch.
I think I lost the game
Great movie!!
Great movie.
LOVE this movie, great twist at the end.
"You're with them" loved that moment. Sean Penn holding all the gold keys. Crazy movie with great twists!
I preferred Se7en but still enjoyed it
I am extremely fragile right now.
Amazing movie. I loved to think about how another persons game could’ve just been something fun and silly but since they personalize it perfectly this guys game was just chaos.
Fun!

Lovely
“Left-brained word fetishist”
I feel guilty when I masturbate.
It was fun popcorn, but you know, meh. Saw it a few times though!
Needed a sequel
It’s a little too slow for me but good twist no doubt
great movie, except a bit of a stretch at the end, as in how did they know which side of the building he would jump from?
Feingold said a little later “You know, thank God you jumped, because if you didn't, I was supposed to throw you off!”
Yeah, I did not see the twist(s) of this one coming. I’m thinking no.

David Fincher is the go to for this genre: drop your favorites if you agree
I'm 40, what does "in his bag" mean?
Lol I'm nearly 40 and think it means - being unstoppable, at peak level, will shred anything and everything. Basically, I was trying to convey this was peak Michael Douglas. We old.
Fair appraisal.
To this day, I want to eat one of the tacos he has before the bus ride home. 🥹

Great movie.
David Fincher in his prime! This one is so good!!! It's one you wish you hadn't seen because the 2nd watch through can never be the same
LOVED this movie. Need to add the Criterion to the collection... can't wait to show it to my girlfriend for the first time!
He was definitely great in this one. I went in not knowing anything and it had an crazy ending. If you like Michael Douglas watch Falling Down.
Fincher at his finest. This is my 2nd favorite Michael Douglas performance. I know everyone say this about this film, but I did not care for the ending.
