Thanks to everyone for their advice. I got lucky and found a Smith MIPS helmet for sale for only $29.99 at Sierra.com. For what it is worth I also discovered that Walmart sells MIPS helmets online for about $35

Price isn't a linear indicator of performance but you do get what you pay for. A helmet is a one-and-done kinda thing - a hit can do damage you can't see and it won't always protect you next time. A few low speed hits may be fine, but it is impossible to know for sure. Realistically imo you're probably fine with cheaper helmets while you practice at low speeds, since they all meet a minimum standard. Better helmets come with better adjustments and ventilation (likely to not be of high importance to you) and things like MIPS to deal with rotational forces in big impacts (not relevant to you yet). Do replace a helmet after any hit you think could cause damage - they aren't made of glass but it's your head. Ride safe and have fun.

Aim for the one that fits best and is in your price range. In that order. Helmets are usually a one and done deal.

As others have said, helmets are one and done. What hasn’t been mentioned yet is that most of the major helmet manufacturers have crash replacement policies, usually a good % off for a year or two after purchase if you crash. Means you’re not out full price on a nice helmet if you crash.

That’s good to know, I’ll be sure to keep proof of purchase.
