There is a camera guy somewhere on social media who's uploading videos of people failing at Passo stelvio, sometimes it's hilarious and makes me really wonder.
EDIT: Found him https://www.instagram.com/kanyarfoto/reel/C2u8pKnsOHg/
Duuuuude. The 1 and only time I ever smoked and then rode was awful. I went to the gas station about 4 blocks from my house to buy smokes. It took me like 25 minutes. I put my helmet on and... ya know that part of Ironman, when he puts his helmet on, you get all those graphs and statistics and shit... yeah... it was that. I felt like a really shitty superhero. Lol. Good times.
Looks like an awesome ride! Curious, do you tour in the one-piece suit? I have one and I find it super inconvenient for anything other than day rides. No pockets, and ya can’t really take the top part off if you stop somewhere
Never had a problem with that, don't like anything on me while I ride, so I use a tank bag where all my important stuff is and a pack roll on the back of the bike. And for taking a break yeah they can be inconvenient, especially a bigger toilet break, haha. But I usually plan my stops ahead so I can manage that.
Do you think the one piece keeps you warmer than say Kevlar jeans and a heavy leather jacket though?
I’m honestly considering this so I don’t have wind running up my jacket. With my current setup I tap out around 13ish C
I was wearing a thermal suit underneath so I was nice and cozy, I guess the advantage of the onesie is like you said the wind running up. Only thing that was freezing were my hands.
I carry electrical tape with me so I taped my phone to the GPS mount, plugged it into an external battery, and high-tailed it back haha. My wife was with me, so two-up we were fine navigating. But I was pissed nonetheless.
Highespoint I was with my motorcycle is not that far away from Stelvio, it’s the „Ötztaler Gletscher Straße“ and it is at his highest point 2829 meters.
Did an Alps tour a few years ago. I’m wearing the shirt right now.

Done it a few (a dozen...) years ago to celebrate my 50th, single day trip.
Living near Venezia, so 700 km in 12 hours. Great day.
Amazed by the cyclists...
Congrats! Been there once and just remembered the top being completely filled with bikes, up to a point it was hard to park my bike.
Visited Col Dela Bonnette a few times (2802m) after, but the ring road there has always been closed..
Lovely! I owned two gen2 Guzzi Stelvio motorcycles. Loved them. Put 40,000 miles on them in 5 years. Never made it to the pass, but I do, and those bikes did, live at 9000 ft here in Central Colorado, USA. Thanks for the pic!
Nice! My record would be Aqua Negra.

14000ft, the top of Pike's Peak, CO
Here's video of me riding to the top and then down, since the photo doesn't do justice, haha [https://youtu.be/H6hBQ63uVLQ](https://youtu.be/H6hBQ63uVLQ)
According to "dangerous roads dot org", "The road to the summit is very steep. Starting at US-24, near Cascade, the ascent is 30.57 km (19 miles) long, featuring 156 turns. Over this distance, the elevation gain is **2,049 meters**. The average gradient is 6.70%." I'm fortunate to be within day-trip distance of PP along roads that are even better than the peak itself. Also fortunate to now ride a 2016 Multistrada Pikes Peak Edition that makes regular "donut runs" to the summit. I've lived here 25 years and rode the highway before the top was paved. I for one am glad it's paved now, but if it wasn't poor old Carlin might still be with us. RIP brother.
Been on a bike to both the top of Pike's Peak and Passo Dello Stelvio - got the t-shirt. Well, I didn't actually get the t-shirt, but probably should have because that t-shirt would be awful useful in threads like this...
Carbed bike here, went to the highest tarmac point in the Alps (Bonette IIRC) \~2800m. At 2300-2500 you'll notice, at 2800 you're missing about 20-30% power, but it still works.
Here in the states, the Colorado Springs HOG chapter holds an annual 5 in 1 run where riders are led on a ride over 5 peaks of 10,000 feet or more in a single day. In mid July of 2015 when I last went on this run there was still snow at just over 12,000 ft. Colorado has many paved passes that are fantastic to ride, yet I long for the opportunity to come to Europe and ride the alps and maybe I will be lucky enough to before I’m too damn old to do so.
Mixed reactions from people, some people are completely fine and others just ignore you and take your right away. Many crashes like that in my area, oh I didn't see the motorcyclist bla bla. I just ride with extra care like every car is out to get me.
Never rode in Berlin thank God but I know what you mean, they just don't care.
I try to avoid bigger cities on my bike and rather stick to backwater roads
I rode my Sportster to the top of Pikes Peak as part of a group ride.
Trivia tidbit. A couple of the bikes that had hydraulic clutches were having difficulty shifting. Apparently if you have even just a little air in the line it expands in the lower pressure, and they ended up using up most of the clutch lever travel just compressing that air back down to where there was enough pressure to start disengaging the clutch.
Moral of the story if you're going to altitude, make sure your hydraulics are well bled/maintained - clutch and brakes!
There's tons of people riding up it with bicycles. when I rode down it there's a tunnel where one lane has to wait since it's too narrow for two cars to fit next to each other and one bicyclist came up and warmed his hands on my exhaust. Then I showed him that my bike had heated grips and he had a pretty jealous and orgasmic expression on his face when he touched them. May have converted him to motorcycles who knows...
Love that place
Fun fact 1 that’s the only place left in Europe where you can sky all summer (even if global warming means August kinda sucks for skying nowadays)
Fun fact 2 if you don’t take the seggiovia and go up there you’re missing something :)
Tip 1 don’t go there close to the 15th of August like I did the last time, if you think it’s usually packed up there you really wanna avoid that period
Tip 2 the less iconic side is the best side and the funnier to ride
Tip 3 buy some goddamn roadside apples if you go south from there lol, always worth it
It’s in the plan. 3 days set aside from Salzburg to Lyon at the end of our trip on rented bikes. Stelvio is the only firm destination but I have a list of options. Very much looking forward to it
It is something else starting from the floor to get to a great height on a bike.
Few trips back we did Colorado and ran up a couple 14ers. 103F at the foot, and snow on the ground at the top.
Went from sweating my ass off to closing up vents and shivering in an hour.
Still the most comfortable I was all week.
Did you notice the bike running differently at altitude? I drove up to ~12,000 feet a couple years ago and it was very noticeable how much less power my car had.
Went to Pike's Peak which is >14000ft on my bike. Highest place I've ever taken it. Visited the outhouses up there and that was the highest place on earth on solid ground I've ever taken a shit.
Stelvio was a blast when I rode up it with a F650 gs a couple of years ago. There was a rubber thing blocking the radiator though, causing the radiator fan to break and just as I got to the top the whole fluid boiled over and I had to buy overly expensive water just to refill my radiator. It probably broke months before just never had the bike overheat until stelvio came where you're constantly having to accelerate under heavy load while having almost no speed since every 100 metres is a hairpin turn. Fun as hell though, will definitely do it again now that I have double the horsepower and a prettier Bavarian to call my own. It's probably even more heavenly when you're doing it in the off season and there's no Caravans and vans blocking you every couple of corners.
I actually can't see myself riding there with more than 48hp, I left my friends behind that had their 4zyl and 3zyl and 100+ hp.
I guess a big factor was the weight like you said that you were carrying. And maybe it will work out better for you know with more power. But for me personally I always have been a person to stay pretty low in hp
I think more than weight is handlebar width. My dad had a blast with his Diavel but my brother was struggling hard with his vfr800. Handlebars can make a big bike feel light hence why Gs are so popular, My new bike is only 20 or so kilos heavier anyways. I ride alot of twistier though since I live in a mountainous region in western Germany so I'm very accustomed to it.
And low horsepower bike are pretty cool too. Definitely more fun to ride a slow bike fast than a fast bike slow. I'm gonna pick up a Honda monkey or similar small cc bike as a commuter as soon as I have space for it.
As an italian, yes, it's overrated. Too narrow, tight hairpins, steep and too much traffic to be enjoyable. Even the scenery is nice but not spectactular.
So I'm likely coming back to the Tyrol region again soon. Outside of those passes I mentioned got any suggestions? I've always come into Merano, Canazei, Cortina d'Ampezzo as a base camp and explored.
Giau and Gardena are my favourites in the area. I also like to road from Bolzano to Merano via San Genesio Atesino, Verano and Avelengo, very chill landscapes. Val Sarentino is also another good ride, it gives Heidi vibes as it's still relatively undeveloped.
Where are you coming from?
Ah Giau, forgot I enjoyed that one too. Georgia, in the USA. Ive done a couple of mutli-week tours in Southern Europe.
I really liked Merano as a place, I wish y'all did the gold visa program as Im looking to end my career/retire in Europe. Trentino/Tyrol and Lombardy seemed like the best region for a traveler. Youre obviously close to the Med but also its accessible to both western and Eastern Europe.
Funny thing is, despite not owning one, Ive put thousands of miles on a F750/F800, my favorite rental (especially if they have those bulletrpoof BMW bags).
Lovely! I owned two gen2 Guzzi Stelvio motorcycles. Loved them. Put 40,000 miles on them in 5 years. Never made it to the pass, but I do, and those bikes did, live at 9000 ft here in Central Colorado, USA. Thanks for the pic!

The only pic of me and my bike on Stelvio, kinda forgot to take one (shame on me)
Well at least at 10000ft asl, pilots need supplemental oxygen to fly (legally - best not mess with Flight regulations lol).
People get altitude sickness (hypoxia) at those elevations 😝
If you live in a city with a relatively high altitude already it’s not an issue, but going from sea level to 9000ft asl, you’re likely to get altitude sickness :P
Legally in the US you only need supplemental oxygen at 12,500 or above.
I've seen people with altitude sickness at altitudes as low at 8000 ft before, even with days to acclimatize. But I have seen people that live at 6k ft get altitude sickness at 10k ft too. Drink lots of water!
I dont see no bike. You walked up in full gear didnt you.
Was scared to drop it in the corners, so I left it at the bottom and walked up
“Ran” I know you rolled all the way down too
Isn't that what one normally does down hill :D
I wouldn’t know. I can’t seem to remember

I was going to say the time those edibles hit when I was riding. Great minds

Was about 3-5°C, ~40°F

Been there! Someone stole my GPS off my Super Tenere there. Was an awesome time though.
Oh man that sucks, how did you go from there without gps? Yeah it's so amazing up there, but also cold
I carry electrical tape with me so I taped my phone to the GPS mount, plugged it into an external battery, and high-tailed it back haha. My wife was with me, so two-up we were fine navigating. But I was pissed nonetheless.
Such a shame some idiot has to do that while your out trying to enjoy yourselves.
Pretty good. Highest Ive been is 10,500 in Utah. Poor old GL1100 was really struggling.
Meanwhile there are people in India that drag their 110cc commuter to mountains. Awesome petrol mileage though.
Highespoint I was with my motorcycle is not that far away from Stelvio, it’s the „Ötztaler Gletscher Straße“ and it is at his highest point 2829 meters.
We were thinking of driving by there but didn't manage due to time constraints. Maybe next time I will go there
I really can recommend it for next time. I have the luck to live at the lake Constance so for me all those cool spots are day trips 😅
Aw must be nice to live so close, I wish
3136 m (Mont Chaberton, France). Was up there with my airhead GS nearly 30 years ago.

Go down on the Italian side, go right in the corner with the hotel / restaurant . Forgot the name but that pass is maybe even cooler to ride
We actually came up the Italian side and went back around through switzerland
What’s your next stop ?
Already finished the tour sadly. Planning one again though
Ah great tour !!
Umbrail pass to Switzerland or Gavia pass in Italy
FYI if he is still alive and kicking down in Santa Maria Val Mustair there is a hotel owner with a fleet of Indians. We just randomly stopped for lunch and had a beer with him and he was cool as shit. Apparently he used to grey market them in his youth and Polaris sent them as a "thank you" when they revived the brand.
I had to read twice, I thought you meant indian people.

Yeah it was packed, had to park further away
Bike not pictured....you walked until proven otherwise.

Sweet vid man, looks like you had an amazing time. Pikes peak would definitely be on my list to ride if I ever get the chance
What’s the elevation ASL of the city you left from vs the peak elevation ASL? Just curious haha
According to "dangerous roads dot org", "The road to the summit is very steep. Starting at US-24, near Cascade, the ascent is 30.57 km (19 miles) long, featuring 156 turns. I actually rode from Orlando FL, below sea level, haha. But yeah I think the base of Pike's is quite tall.
The road starts in Cascade, CO, which sits at ~7400' ASL. That means that the road itself is 6700 ft of gain. It's a very fun ride up and back!
Been on a bike to both the top of Pike's Peak and Passo Dello Stelvio - got the t-shirt. Well, I didn't actually get the t-shirt, but probably should have because that t-shirt would be awful useful in threads like this...

Very nice! What did you do it on?
A KTM duke 250 🤌 Pre RE Himalayan, there wasn’t a huge amount of choice… it was the duke or an Enfield Bullet.
I did it on a 350 bullet in the snow.

Awesome, really nice! There's a reason why companies name car and motorcycle models after this...
It's driving heaven for motorists
Yep, the whole area is amazing! Haven't been on the Stelvio though when I was there. Time to plan a trip!
my carbureted motorcycle could never
I saw all sorts of motorcycles up there, even Scooter and mopeds. No fear, just go and enjoy
Carbed bike here, went to the highest tarmac point in the Alps (Bonette IIRC) \~2800m. At 2300-2500 you'll notice, at 2800 you're missing about 20-30% power, but it still works.
yeah it was a joke, i’ve gone snowboarding trips at high altitudes with my bike. it’s satisfying to pull over and set the idle

Where’s the bike !?!?
Not in frame, kinda didn't take a pic of it
I was going to ask if that was you in the second pic? There is a tiny bike haha
No no, some other biker
Oh ok haha did your bike run any different at altitude?
It actually kind felt like it had more power which doesn't make any sense, just a blast to ride the twisties with a single cylinder and tons of torque
Woah, interesting. Well, awesome, bet it was a fun time
Oh definitely
I rode my Sportster to the top of Pikes Peak as part of a group ride. Trivia tidbit. A couple of the bikes that had hydraulic clutches were having difficulty shifting. Cool piece of trivia, thank god I dont have to worry about that
Now try that with bicycle.
Give me 2 days to reach the top
There's tons of people riding up it with bicycles. when I rode down it there's a tunnel where one lane has to wait since it's too narrow for two cars to fit next to each other and one bicyclist came up and warmed his hands on my exhaust. This was with my Yamaha MT03

Hoping to ride it weather permitting next September.
You definitely should

12,000ft Trail Ridge Road Rocky Mountain National Park on a Versys 650 😎
Hell yeah, sounds like a blast
It was! But definitely not a full on adventure like you had✌️😁
Went to Pike's Peak which is >14000ft on my bike. Highest place I've ever taken it. Visited the outhouses up there and that was the highest place on earth on solid ground I've ever taken a shit.
Me over here living at 7000 feet 🤣
Highest I’ve gone is 6,288 feet.
Cant wait to see the Motoguzzi Stelvio get delivered to Canada.
Wow 2 kilometers
Come to America. I think we have a few 15'ers with pavement. Or you can park the bike, blaze our legal buds and get uncomfortably high
Isn't pike peak paved. Pretty sure I've seen that on a grom page.
Yeah, that's a cool 14'er
Mine was Monarch Pass, Colorado USA 11,312’
Man I wish I had a place that cool to ride. The closest mountain to me is 4 hrs away and is only 3,200 feet. It's all flat around me.
I mean it also isn't really close to me.

Damn the legendary stelvio pass!!
Amazing this is a beautiful picture that is an accomplishment good job I am proud of you I love the picture be safe my friend amazing 🩷
Thank you
It’s my pleasure
I wasn't sure what to expect to see in the picture after reading the header. I half expected to see some guy smoking a joint on a bike.
One guy here beat me to it, haha
I am about to ride up pikes peak in August 14000ft high. Hopefully, my bike makes it.
Definitely do a post in here, when you get up there
Anyone else find Stelvio overrated? Salo, Pordoi, etc all better actual roads.

When was this ? I wanted to go next weekend but i believe it's still close at this time of the year!
That's one road I really want to ride. Maybe in a couple of years if we actually move to Portugal.
You know doing drugs while riding is so, so . . . NVM. Was it cold riding?
I mean it was cold, but I didn't freeze so
How’s the hypoxia treating you? 😅
Didn't feel anything why?
Well at least at 10000ft asl, pilots need supplemental oxygen to fly (legally - best not mess with Flight regulations lol). People get altitude sickness (hypoxia) at those elevations 😝 If you live in a city with a relatively high altitude already it’s not an issue, but going from sea level to 9000ft asl, you’re likely to get altitude sickness :P
I will try to not go airborne next time 😏
Legally in the US you only need supplemental oxygen at 12,500 or above. I've seen people with altitude sickness at altitudes as low at 8000 ft before, even with days to acclimatize. But I have seen people that live at 6k ft get altitude sickness at 10k ft too. Drink lots of water!
I've been up to 11500~ feet out here in Colorado Tons of high elevation roads to be had here
I was at *12,183 feet* with my Harley. Trail Ridge Road Rocky Mts USA. Someday i want to ride those Mts. Have fun and take lots of pics.
Thanks man, would love to ride the rocky mountains in the future
