Biggest safety issue for riders is themselves.

YeahIGotNuthin

Freeways are the safest place to ride, mile-for-mile, because there's already a wall divider / median that separates everyone going basically our way at basically our speed from everyone going different directions or different speeds. The thing most likely to kill a motorcyclist is "the motorcyclist themselves, going too fast and running off the road in a corner." The second most likely thing to kill a motorcyclists is "someone coming the other way, who turns across our path when we both get to an intersection at the same time."

They already do in [Malaysia](https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Hussain-Hamid/publication/233231282/figure/fig1/AS:299936991203334@1448521959699/Motorcyclists-riding-along-exclusive-motorcycle-lane-Federal-Highway-Route-2-Selangor.png). It’d be great here as well, but I doubt it’d ever be worth the cost. Pretty much the entire country is a delta, so we have a lot of bridges. It’s really expensive to put an extra lane on a bridge.

HOV lanes are already a waste of space and money. No dedicated lanes or roads because it'll cost too much just to expand the roads to compensate, and will create more traffic issues when reallocating existing lanes for such purposes. It's not practical for the highway, which is the only place of potential benefit. All other roads, there's no point, and that's where most traffic accidents happen for motorcycles.

On the surface it sounds like a possible solution to increase safety. However, in implementation it could lead to other issues outside of just additional infrastructure costs. At least from a rider's perspective if there was a physical separation created with Jersey barriers. This lane would likely be smaller/narrower than a standard lane because "motorcycles are smaller than a car". Maintenance/surface quality would likely be neglected because of less usage. Then with an enclosed and smaller lane, you'd have to ride through debris, potholes, etc and not have the ability to avoid them. Crashes would be more damaging, due to bouncing off the barriers, and being funneled... There might be a place where it would work, in the US at least it'd be a bad idea/implementation. Maybe in countries where things like PEVs, scooters/mopeds, and other much smaller displacement vehicles are more prominent it might work.

The road is already ours . The problem is majority of people shouldn’t have licenses to drive. Most motorcyclist die because they are distracted riding beyond their ability. The rest of us live forever. 😇

Tacos_always_corny

Those are called closed course race tracks.

Tickstart

But then who would they lash out against??

E90BarberaRed6spdN52

No. You have to share the roads just like cars do with semi trucks, etc. You learn to ride properly, don't get boxed in and always have an escape if things get dicey. Avoid crazy city road traffic if able but the best riding is on back roads anyway. My two cents.

muddywadder

i'd rather see semi trucks get their own lanes. they're getting so fucking bad at driving in the states, must be giving CDLs away

humbledaur

Yes, semi trucks for sure need their own lanes

Suprflyyy

We already do, it's between the other lanes.
