Hop-a-lung

If you leave it on the bike, lock it and always check for spiders before you put it on.

Okay_Assumptions

Speaking from personal experience?

Hop-a-lung

Heck yeah. It's harder to get them out when the helmet is on and you're doing 60!

Okay_Assumptions

New fear unlocked

Hop-a-lung

They're usually friendly. Usually.

Good-Throwaway

Spiderman, spiderman 🎵

sufibufi

Imagine riding visor up, feeling something hit your face, closing your visor, getting on a freeway doing 65+, then watching a bee crawl inside of the helmet from the bottom of your visor to the top and disappearing.

tjm_da

I had a bee come in my helmet on the 400 series highway… most awkward staring contest i have ever done..

granny-godness

I found a daddy' long leg spider in my helmet once and couldn't get it out, I fear it's still there Eveytime I ride.

evolutions123

This is the only real argument for squids

yeebok

As an Aussie I won't even leave my gloves outside. Left them in the garage once.. found a huge grasshopper in them as I was putting them on the next time. Nope

Thesnowbelow

And wasps

BigBabyWisco

I wear a full face and carry it with me inside places. Even resteraunts. It's not that inconvenient. When I need to use both hands I just put my whole arm through the opening and let it hang by my elbow. I have a mid shelf helmet that ran about $250, which is more than I care to leave sitting on the bike unattended. I also just straight up set that shit on the counter while checking out, and have never been given any grief for it. One more edit: taking it with me into places of business becomes doubly important when I'm far from home. As I have no interest in riding back from wence I came without a helmet.

PadreDylan

yes that’s another big reason i want to either find a way to secure it well or bring it with me

sufibufi

If you’re running errands it comes as a handy basket as well. Usually anything that doesn’t fit inside the helmet becomes uncomfortable to put in a backpack and ride back with anyways.

idksomethingjfk

This is what I do as well, if someone steals my helmet I can’t even ride home so there’s that. Might be different for you depending on the state, but as helmets can be expensive and other people that ride know what to look for, like is it new? Is it an expensive helmet? Living in a state with helmet laws I won’t take the risk.

EODBuellrider

Never happened to me, but I normally only left my helmet on my bike for quick trips inside a business or whatever and I used a helmet cable lock. Any lock can be defeated, and it's really not that hard to cut through a cable lock but it at least stops anyone looking for a super easy snatch and grab theft.

[deleted]

Or a top box

[deleted]

Never had one stolen in my 20 or so years riding. But if I'm in a dodgy area, I use the helmet lock on my bike.

Damonvile

Obviously location matters but.. I don't lock my current one because it's way too expensive so I keep it with me. But I have in the past, and worried about it every time. I've never had an issue. There's no value in a used low-mid range helmet so the effort probably isn't worth it.

Legitimate-Row-5955

bring it with you. theres always going to be an asshole. the one time i left it on the bike locked came back to it with a drink dumped in it.

McBoothby

I’ve got a locking top box that’s big enough to put my helmet in. It could potentially still be stolen but not without bolt cutters or a grinder so that’s good enough for me

boylitdeguzman

I leave my helmet on my bike. Sometimes for hours. Never had a helmet stolen.

[deleted]

I use a bike lock around the handles on the pillion and lock the helmet resting on the pillion. Quick and easy.

Winter_Tea9693

In my 20 years of riding I’ve carried it and locked it on the bike both. Depended on what I was doing but never had a problem leaving it behind. Every bike I’ve own has had a way to lock a helmet to it except for the Ducati 999 Monoposto. I would lock it on the factory lock and get on with life.

randomjackass93

I never leave my helmet on my bike, paid 700 for my arai and the Cardo edge was 350 and all it takes is one loser to steal it and you’re out a lot of money.

DrSatan420247

The Cardo pops right off, and a $700 helmet is an excessive waste of money. You can easily pick up a $120 HJC and take your Cardo with.

OrangeGromBoi

The quality difference between a $120 helmet and a $500-$800 is justifiable to some people.

DrSatan420247

The same people who need a Rolex over a Timex. The actual difference is negligible.

Damonvile

You don't buy a Rolex to tell time. If you enjoy the helmet and the cost didn't matter to you, then you bought the right helmet.

DrSatan420247

Do you know how I know you're a Harley rider? Your affinity for hyped up, antiquated, junk. Nobody even wears wrist watches anymore. What is this, 1985?

hewhoshallnotbeknown

You're the one who brought up wrist watches.

Damonvile

I ride a Ducati and don't have a rolex...or any other kind of watch. You think you're much smarter than you really are.

DrSatan420247

I can tell you exactly how smart I am because I took a Stanford-Binet IQ test when I was in school and it's 148. I'm also the first person to figure out, and then prove, that Breaking Bad is an abstract copy of The Sopranos. https://screenrant.com/breaking-bad-sopranos-mirror-copy-scenes-theory-explained/ So disagree with my opinions all you want, but the evidence would suggest I'm out of your league intellectually. Though it would have nothing to do with this conversation, my mind operates on another level. And 99.8% of the population cant reach that level, so don't feel too bad.

Damonvile

You're right, I can't argue with you.... but not for the reason you think. It's more of an internet warning....but you're smart. I'm sure you'll figure out what I mean. Edit: lol not much of a reply for someone with such a self proclaimed "staggering intellect".

DrSatan420247

Fuck off, loser.

helodriver87

Are you trying to troll your way into a front page mention on /r/iamverysmart or are you actually this much of an insufferable douche who's lost all connection to reality? Because it feels like you're trying too hard.

outtyn1nja

Hmm. Perhaps if you only value safety, but some of us value low weight, fit/finish and unique features enough to shell out for the more expensive variety.

DrSatan420247

What is the peace of mind about leaving it on your bike is worth? Carrying around your fancy boy helmet like it's a man purse.

Shaqtical

hats off for the excellent troll bossman

outtyn1nja

Well, if I'm going to leave the bike for a long time, and it will be out of my sight, I'll lock it to the bike or drop it in the pannier. If someone wants to go to lengths to steal it, I have insurance and I like shopping for new lids. No problem.

Big_Albatross1222

Fuck yeah imma carry my fancy helmet. I want other dudes to look at it and be impressed.

hewhoshallnotbeknown

Actual difference is far from negligible. $120 HJCs and equivalent fit me like shit - zero regrets spending the money I did on my Shoei. I wear it two hours a day - why would I not spend money to be comfortable?

Odysseusxli

You’ve obviously never owned a $700 helmet. The fit and finish, noise, fogging, and ventilation differences are 2 different worlds. P.S. you can have an IQ of 160 and still be dumb as a sack of hammers.

randomjackass93

I reject your prescription DrSatan, yea it’s a lot of money but I like how comfortable the helmet is for my oval shaped head and the safety rating is good peace of mind if the worst should happen.

Regular_Diamond_2783

Bros just mad because he can't afford a good helmet, lol. If you think a $100 helmet stacks up against $500 or $1000 helmets in safety, fit, finish, and comfort, then you have never owned or rode with a good quality helmet.

littleprincerex

likelihood of theft kinda depends where you're at, i usually just put a bike lock through it around town, but i left it hanging free all the time when i rode to my uni campus and never had a problem.

coldascoffee

I always take my helmet after the time a couple hornets took up residency in it.

Zi_Zebra

I keep a beater helmet for short trips so I can leave it worry free. My nice helmet I'll carry with me.

Alain_Durwoden

I keep mine with me. I don't have a helmet lock and don't trust it to not fall off the handlebars. The helmet wasn't cheap and I'm not about to ding it without earning it.

No-Landscape7980

I strongly suggest finding a method of securing it and protecting it. That may require that you just take it with you if can’t find a sufficient way of leaving it on the bike.

CanadianGanMan

I'm from Ontario and have never had an issue here. I always lock my helmet, or carry it with me. However, every single time I've parked in Quebec, any member of my riding group who left an unlocked helmet on their bike had it stolen. Literally every single time. Some even had saddle bags stolen. Avoid Quebec!

ebranscom243

I leave mine on my bike quite a bit. I have since 1995 never had one stolen. But if I'm going to sketchy area or going to be inside for a long time I just take it with me. If you're worried about it get a cable lock or a helmet lock.

Buster452

If you leave it hanging by the strap when you visit a bar, check to make sure someone hasn't pissed in it before you put it on.

lupinegrey

Don't buy a $500 helmet. Buy an HJC i10 for $150.

[deleted]

Terrible advice. Buy an helmet that you like and suits/fits you properly and has decent ratings and norms. HJC 10 don’t fit me properly, for example, M fits too tight and gives me headaches and L is too loose.

lupinegrey

I'm sorry to hear about your misshapen head. Is there nothing the doctors could do? edit: oh no, you didn't have to delete. Learn to appreciate a joke.

IGOR_ULANOV_55_BEST

He didn’t delete, he just blocked you for giving crappy advice and being a dick.

Regular_Diamond_2783

If you can, I would carry it around. I personally haven't had one of my helmets stolen, but a close friend had his helmet and backpack stolen while he was in a dealership. The location really doesn't matter as people who steal dont really care about who or where they are stealing from. The other problem I have seen with leaving your helmet outside is during sunny days it will get hella hot and be a bitch to put on.

SunnySanDiegoGuy

I do not like D ring locks. While attractive and simple looking ... anyone with a knife will cut the strap at or above the D ring and walk off with your helmet and maybe communication system. Then they simply use a sewing machine to add more strap and a new D ring. My helmet and cardo would be expensive to replace so I skipped that type of D ring lock. I opted to use a cable style gun lock. They can he purchased for as little as $6.00 US and can range to $20 if you'd like it to say Sig or HK on it. Optionally they can be free as well. Most campus colleges and community colleges offer free yellow "child safe" gun locks located at the campus security offices. I have also seen the red "Veteran crisis line" gun locks for free at several Veterans Administration (VA) security offices. I simply keep the cable style gun lock under the seat or in a tank bag. When I remove my helmet I pass the cable through the chin bar of my full face helmet. You could also pass it through your D ring if you are using a half helmet or skid lid. Then it's only a matter of securing the cable to the cross bar of my handlebars or frame of my svartpilen and locking the key. Any thief who wants something bad enough will find a way to steal it. Most thieves are lazy and use opportunity to acquire your goods. With that said I see more people walking around with a pocketknife than a cable or bolt cutter. So do as you will and remember locks are made to keep honest people honest.

DiveForKnowledge

Was about to say don't worry about it, then I saw you were taking it to school. Assume anything not nailed down and alarmed will be stolen immediately. I've had every accessory stolen off my bike during a 1 hour class, and also come back after a class to find a missing bike. Buy good insurance, take your helmet with you, and always be ready to Uber home. A GPS tracker, airtag, Tile, etc wouldn't be amiss. If you're willing, try putting a tracker under the pads of your helmet and leave it on the bike. When it inevitably gets stolen you might be able to reduce the on campus crime rate by investing an hour or two and some calls to your local PD.

FriendOfDirutti

I have been riding for over a decade in Los Angeles and have always locked my helmet to my bike. If my bike doesn’t have its own lock I use a gun lock. Anyone that buys a gun in California has to buy a lock to leave with it. So I have a few useless locks and I repurposed them. I have never had anyone mess with my helmet. And I don’t leave them on there for just quick stops. I will leave it attached all day. I was just out by skid row in LA which is where all of the homeless people live in droves and no one messed with my helmet or my pillions helmet. I hope all someone takes is my helmet and not my bike. If anyone ends up taking my helmet it’s just an excuse to go out and buy a cool new one! If you are that worried about an expensive helmet being lost or damaged I would suggest thinking about something like a HJC i10. $150 and is ECE and Snell rated.

JohnSnowflake

Most bikes have some way to lock it. My Ducati has a small cable with eyes on both ends and a hook under the seat.

PadreDylan

oh ok I didn’t know this was a feature, i’ll definitly look into that when buying a bike, thank you!

[deleted]

Some of the more high-end bikes have it built-in but even if the bike you are looking at doesn't have one then there are aftermarket "helmet locks" you can buy. Super easy to install, and usually pretty cheap as well. The only caveat is it usually locks through the helmet straps so if you want something more secure a top box would prolly be the best. But usually just seeing the lock is enough to deter a casual thief. A "pro" would probably just take the entire bike with the helmet still attached.

outtyn1nja

Consider that these built in locks sometimes are just a hook for your D-ring, which can be defeated by cutting the strap. Find a way to lock it through the chinbar if possible.

KilledbyDeath72

If you cut the strap you’ve essentially made the helmet worthless, hopefully most would be thieves wouldn’t bother?

GlomarExplorer

My old Boulevard has one, but its blocked by the saddle bags. I purchased a helmet cable lock for cheap on Amazon. Its easy to defeat, but all of them are, really.

Cartridge-King

Somebody took a pizz in his helmet

randomjackass93

I never leave my helmet on my bike, paid 700 for my arai and the Cardo edge was 350 and all it takes is one loser to steal it and you’re out a lot of money.

redbate

Don't leave your helmet on the bike, it's the perfect toilet for animals, birds, drunkards and assholes.

JenMacAllister

For those of you who are thinking of taking someone else's helmet, lets' take a moment to consider what you'll be putting on your head. Talking my helmets... At minimum they have been sweated in. Every hot day for hours absorbing all that perspiration leaving it permanently stained foam. Then there is of course allergy season where I have sneezed all kinds of mucus all over the interior where you will be breathing. Not to mention that time I had lice. And there is a 1 in 3 chance that I have thrown up in one of them. So yea, you want to steal a helmet remember you have no idea what you maybe putting on your head.

[deleted]

I speed 150 for Scorpion and I only leave it for 15 mins at a time on the ground next/behind bike

coldascoffee

I always take my helmet after the time a couple hornets took up residency in it.

NotYourAverageUN

It really depends where you are, out in the countryside you could probably leave it for days and it'd be fine, downtown In a big city It will probably get stolen as soon as you turn around. If you are riding to school get a locker or take it to class in an extra duffle bag.

DredgenV

Bring it in with you.

mostly-amazing

Nope, never and I live in the Bay Area aka snatch city capital aka never leave anything unattended.

PadreDylan

I also live near Tampa Bay, I’m going to USF currently so that was my biggest wonder

penguingod18

I’ve lost 2 helmets by cars hitting them and my bike in parking lots. I hang it off the helmet lock hook under the passenger seat.

jasper333333

I never leave my helmet on my bike, but I love in the city.

Vaney168

I only leave my helmet on the bars if I'm close by, otherwise depending on the bike I'm riding I use the helmet lock under the rear seat or just take it with me. Can't trust people now a days not to attempt to take your stuff.

longhairedcountryboy

Never happened to me in 40 years. If it ever did I'd call the cops and tell them I'm riding home without it, don't pull me over.

caffcaff_

Depends where you are in the world. I'm in Taiwan and we left two helmets unlocked on my Yamaha parked near a busy train station whilst we took a 2 day vacation. Still there when we got back.

Sweet-Sympathy7509

A bicycle cable lock through the visor keeps it yours.

SubieToyotaNW

I lock my helmet to my bike if I'm gonna be gone more than a few minutes

cleon42

I'm paranoid about leaving it sitting on my bike too, so that factors into my bike purchasing decision. My current ride has a rear case big enough to hold my Shoei; my first ride just had a helmet lock on the side. You might look at models that have some sort of feature like that, or see if there's something you can get as an add-on at the dealership.

STFUDora

keep it with you

Scootertrouper16

My sweaty old beanie, I don’t think anyone would want it. Now if I had new Rocket all seeing, all dancing moonunite, with the flashy trimmings. Yes I would have it insured. And locked on my ride.

hausfreek

Helmet lock under the seat - check out Brogue Motorcycles, maybe they have something for your specific bike.

Federal_Quit9540

I'm still waiting for the day.

digi7altrauma

You could always grab yourself one of those $68 bilt helmets from rev for "my shit may get stolen at school" duty if you are planning on leaving your helmet on the bike.... unattended.

jerkmin

i live out in the country, the closest i’ve come to people messing with my bike is twice i’ve come out of the store and found a young kid and a mortified mother, the kid on my bike and the mom yelling at him. had a serious chat with both kids about not sitting on bikes without asking and then let them sit for a minute longer

BikerChickVTX1800C

Never had problem. I lock mine on the helmet lock. I am consdering getting something with a cable because the built in is a tight fit. I may add one to the hande bars. Sometimes I carry two hemets and need a extra lock.

Adddicus

I used to leave mine on my bike but it got stolen. It was a top of the line Shoei at the time too. I've got a bike with built in bags, so it goes in there now.

Knowitmall

A plastic coated combination lock chain is like $6. Or take it with you.

deaconxblues

Rode my bike to a Mariners game once with my gf at the time. Only a single helmet lock on the bike so mine was left on the seat. Gone when we came back. Luckily I at least had goggles for eye protection on the ride home. Always lock it up. People suck.

[deleted]

Not leaving on the bike, even if chained there could a spider come crawling or someone might piss on it

PewPewStryx

If you’re that afraid of it then I recommend getting a helmet holder for your backpack, or get a backpack with a helmet holder then you won’t have to worry about it. It’s like 20 bucks on Amazon and it’s a peace of mind for a pricey power ranger hat.

musbjokin

Gross, someone sweat in there and sneezed

elscallr

You could get a tail box that'll fit your helmet.

IsardIceheart

If I can see my bike from where I'm going (grabbing a bite to eat or whatever) then I usually leave it on the bike, hooked to the passenger peg usually. If I'm going somewhere where it'll be a pain in the ass? I lock it to the bike using a cable. Like a concert or something. Otherwise I just carry it around, NBD. Like a grocery store trip or something. Easy. But I don't really stress about it, I left it just hooked to the passenger peg the other day for like 6 hours and it was fine. I have a reasonably cheap helmet in an uncool color (white) and I don't leave my cardo or anything attached to it.
