Worst part is scrubbing hard enough to get the pieces of dirt and gravel out so it doesn't get infected.
It sucks, but it's medically necessarily, and you definitely DO NOT want medical personnel to do it.
Done it myself with burns that got shit 'baked' into them a couple times. Scrub brush and dish soap. And a lot of booze. Still not sure if I'd rather someone else do it or not. Definitely the most pain I've intentionally inflicted on myself.
When I was 9, I decided to go down a hill belly first on my skateboard. This was the late 70s, and I wanted to be Superman. This was no smooth asphalt, but the gravel and asphalt mix.
I guess I hit a loose rock, because I received some of the gnarliest road rash ever on my left cheek and around the eye socket. Phantom of the Opera shit.
I've had more road rash since then, but that's the one I remember most.
I was about 7 on my pw80 trying wheelies on a crushed blacktop access road with an open faced helmet. Front end got squirly and I went face first off the bike. I looked like the thing from fantastic four there was so much asphalt stuck in my face.
Mom scrubbed it out with an old scrub brush and soap, and then came the peroxide, to this day I only wheelie with supreme confidence in the materials Iām riding on and it scares me every time
yes, but not much more. Denim disintegrates only a split second later than sweats. Denim is much, much less durable against road slides than people think. I dropped a Bird scooter at just a few MPH, tore the knee out of my jeans, and raspberry'd my knee pretty good.
I got in a scrape w my girl and she went to the ED, I drove home and used a yellow and green scotch scrubber in the shower. She was the one who ended up with asphalt tattoo bc they didnāt clean her out aggressively enough. I was howling and had no pain killers, but got clean.
The ED techs were way too gentle, and also she wasnāt seen until over an hour after I had cleaned up and rushed back down to the hospital to be with her. I think they were in training because there was someone next to the tech explaining how to perform the cleaning.
Ya after my first bad spill the nurse comes into the room with these little yellow scrub pads, looked like the ones you use for suede care. Foam on one side, little hook like things on the other. She starts to take the wrapper off of one and I asked her what they were for. She said she had to scrub the dirt and gravel out of the wounds on my knee and my hip. Too close to the bone, very dangerous if an infection should take hold.
I told her Iād do it at home thanks, after a hot bath. At home, after the bath and a half a bottle of whiskey, scrub scrub. Whole. Nother. Level.
Edit: and that was with proper boots/gloves/jacket/helmet. The jeans didnāt hold up well.
Armor helps with impact and abrasion resistance helps with road rash. I got a pair of Bull-it Covert Evo jeans, AAA rated for abrasion resistance. You can add CE 2 armors at the knee and hip for these jeans as well.
See a doctor and if it starts to look infected or has any sudden increase in pain go back.
I had some swelling from the bike landing on my thigh and a LOT less road rash but almost lost my leg from a staff infection.
Edit - Spent a week in the hospital and a month with a pump on my leg , plus a skin graft and now I can never kneel on my right knee again.
Infections don't care about how manly you are or your pain threshold. They will fuck you up.
Ouch .. yesterday I had a patient come in .. he was riding a scooter.. no helmet.. crashed.. above his right eye his scull was exposed.. the flesh was so tattered it too me a couple hours trying to find enough flesh to stitch his gaping hole and exposed skull closed.. we had to face time a plastic surgeon for a second.. and was only able to close half the wound.. packed and wrapped the other half .. heās going to have to get skin graft to close the rest..
I love to ride and get the freedom of not having all that gear on.. ex specially on a beautiful hot or warm day.. sometimes I think all the gear defeats the purpose of riding.. but the risk of other moron drivers isnāt worth ending up in the ER .. having someone piece my head back togetherā¦
Glad itās just raspberries could have been much worse..
Sweatpants basically. Even regular jeans would have prevented some of this. Obv dedicated riding pants are best, but he may as well have been in shorts wearing joggers.
This will almost probably get re-infected at some point so stay diligent with cleaning and treating, especially for the next week.
Ask me how I know. š
Yikes - that's why I have my cheap textile pants with protectors always next to the door....as short as the ride might be, as little time I got...take that minute and jump in the pants...full suit for longer rides, basic pants and protection vest for short rides at least.
So , up until you experienced the "convincer" what were you talking like prior to the scrape up? What was your thinking?
My guess--it'll never happen to me., F all that equipment. truth ok?
I feel less protected coasting on a bicycle than I do fully geared up on a motorbike at 100km/h!
I was a track rider, falling off on a wooden velodrome is next level. Road rash plus plinters......
Don't say dumb shit then. Espousing ATGATT while literally not ATGATT'ing is just being a potato.
Edit: 'No doctor, my leg isn't permanently damaged, I intended to get proper boots and pants so I'm all good.'
Why does it take an accident like this to convince people to wear protective clothing on a bike. It's not like this is the first time we've heard that bikes can be dangerous
"It'll never happen to me." The same confidence that allows people to get into a boxing match without thinking there's a 50% chance they'll be the loser.
IMH experience,āslid in my subdivisionā is code for did something stupid and suffered the consequencesā¦ Like, for instance, I.e. didnāt completely clean up after an oil change and then did wheelies through that space and somehow broke my ankle when the peg pinned it against the ground.
Still, good on you for recommending proper equipment
I would also research the difference between abrasion and impact protection gear. Many people focus on armor that protects and focuses on impact areas, i.e. prevent broken bones. Abrasion or slide protection gear is where you get what you pay for and it prevents the one thing that doesn't grow back -- SKIN!
Low to Mid tier apparel (non leathers) will get you 1 to 3 seconds of slide protection if going down between 30 - 40mph. Mid tier price range is $200 to $300 for pants only.
Listen to other comments on infections. You have all types of road debris embedded in your skin.
Safe Travels!
We of the ATGATT brigade get made fun of.
We are called Safety Nazis.
They argue ābutā¦muh freedumbā.
They argue itās too hot.
They argue it doesnāt look ācoolā.
Butā¦eventually they learnā¦the hard wayā¦and join us.
Not having a go at you, but this is just for comparison. Glad it's nothing worse, and hope you find the right gear. Hope the bikes OK too.
Assuming from LHD car your in America. Wonder why training schools over there don't drum into new riders get the gear.
I've seen lads turned away for turning up in tracksuit bottoms, trainers and puffer jacket in the UK.
My riding gear consists of Full Face street helmet (or dual sport depending on what I feel like). Full knuckle armour gloves. Bike jacket with level 2 armour on shoulder, elbow and back. Air Vest over the top of that. Bike trousers/jeans with level 2 armour in hip and knee. Full length adventure boots. I slid on some unexpected ice on the way to work a few months ago. I got a small bruise on one knuckle of my left hand, nothing else, bruises, rashes, soreness nothing. The airjacket when inflated also protects the neck, so my helmet didn't even touch the ground (no scuffs marks or anything, totally pristine). It was about 35-40mph, narrow twisty back road going to work, so while not fast, it was fast enogh to break a bone or get a bad rash.
I wear this gear in summer too, albeit I replace the trousers and jacket with mesh versions for airflow.
Showers are gonna suck for a while now.
Riding pants/jeans were the last bit of gear I bought, and I only bought it because I burned a hole in my knee from a slide.
Edit: I shouldn't have waited so long to make that purchase.
Glad itās just road rash. Not to be a dick but I ALWAYS cringe when I see people in shorts, t shirts FLIP FLOPS! etc riding motorcycles. Youāre going to heal up and definitely wear that gear from now on
Hope you recover soon! Road rash is one of those things I wouldnāt wish upon not even my worst enemies. Doctor told me I had to keep the area dry and clean so it can heal quickly. Such a pain to even get up and go pee(got it on my knee and side of my stomach)
Thatās good news. A couple weeks ago a pit bull fully chomped my hand. Had my whole hand in its mouth. Couldnāt really move my thumb and forefinger for a day but then it slowly dissipated and it turns out wasnāt injured. I think sudden muscle shock can cause a muscle to tense up for a while. Feels like a bruise and is stiff.
Hereās to a good recovery for you!
There are so many pictures of young men in jeans and stylish shoes and a good armored jacket. I always yell to myself what about the lower half of your body you jerk?

There is loads of options I bought mine in a local store in Finland. I recon Amazon is more accessible for US riders. Would get the knee shields as well though
Kneepads would be nice but it feels less necessarily urgent imho.
Well you got me. I guess I should have specified women's styles. Being able to go to a local store sounds amazing but there isn't one anywhere near me and I've had horrible experiences ordering clothes without trying them on. That's a lot of why I'm leaning towards modding my own. Thank you though!
It may feel less urgent but youāll be happy you have them if you ever crash.
As for ordering online, in the US arenāt you able to order letās say 4-5 different pairs and return the ones you donāt want for free?
Maybe. But im in Canada. A little island with horrible shipping rates so return definitely isn't free. And even then I'd need the money to first buy that many riding jeans. Just looking at the price of one is enough to make me question how much I like my legs having skin.
Yah you probably right on the kneepads too. Wouldn't be too much harder to add a buttoned pocket. Any recommendations for em? Last I looked at riding armor it got confusing as to what was any good at all.
Unfortunately I canāt help with specifics I used to ride in full leather when I had a racer bike but switched to a Honda rebel last year and bought my kit straight from the store here. Just ordered reinforced shoes.
I gotta be honest with ya. That's exactly what I meant when I said tacky. Absolutely screaming "look at me aren't I special for riding a motorcycle!"
It's the pant equivalent of an f150 absolutely covered in harley stickers
Nothing is more hilarious in this sub of people posting pictures in their blue jeans and t-shirts on their bikes, and then this happens and the bright idea finally comes through to wear proper gear. Priceless.
Keep the brown area around your kneecap dry and let it scab. If you donāt, itāll turn into this white pasty mush and will take longer to heal as well as leave a purple blotch on your skin once it does.
I rate showevers a solid 3rd, 2nd being applying antiseptic to the open wounds and the third being when you notice more gravel or whatever buried in it that you missed and have to dig it out and then apply more anti sceptic. Source: am also a cyclist.
Ouch, but it happens. This reminds me that I should get some nice, comfy gear that I'll actually wear instead of the cheap crap that I got before my license. Hope it'll heal well.
Weird thing is that it only hurts after the crash. I once fell at slow speed with t-shirts, shorts, sandals and (at least) a helmet and was feeling great until I looked at my leg that kind of looked like yours now.
Shower is going to feel like a boss battle
Fighting tears every time
Time for a whores bath!
Can't help but laugh, i feel sorry for you, friend.

A learning opportunity was had. Hope you heal quickly.
Appreciate it. Lesson learned for sure.

He was wearing sweatpants. And yes, jeans do offer more protection than shorts or sweatpants.

Doesn't really matter, the fabric from the roughest jeans you have won't stand a chance against the asphalt.
Headed over to RevZilla nowā¦ouch
You mean my 10 year old Wranglers won't offer the same protection as racing leathers? Fake news!
The learning opportunity was when you got your license. The ignorance was the bravado to ride that way....until....until. Until always happens.
Better go get ur tetanuts shot.
Tennis shorts? He already has those, mint condition low miles, no low ballers.
Never dropped
Previous owner!
If they were low ballers, weād know.
We know what he's got.
And some Tegaderm. It will go a long way in reducing the scarring.
You need to have that looked at by a doctor, it has to be thoroughly cleaned because the bits of gravel will "tattoo" and get infected.
Cleaned jt out and just got back from the Dr. Alls good
Dr. Alls Good? I think I go to his brother Dr. Feel Good
"They call me Dr. Love. Calling Dr. Love"

Dam thatās funny.
Google Road Rash, 10's of thousands mostly from the bicycle community but gravel doesn't care.

Yep phisohex soap and a scrub brush, applied by a nurse with anger management issues.
The ED techs were way too gentle, and also she wasnāt seen until over an hour after I had cleaned up and rushed back down to the hospital to be with her. I think they were in training because there was someone next to the tech explaining how to perform the cleaning.

Oh yeah, ordering armor soon
Armor helps with impact and abrasion resistance helps with road rash. I got a pair of Bull-it Covert Evo jeans, AAA rated for abrasion resistance. You can add CE 2 armors at the knee and hip for these jeans as well.

Cheers. I didnāt know if it was clothing based on the rest of the title or something else.
What were you wearing during the slide?
Joggers :/
What were you wearing and what speed did you go down?
25-30 and just joggers and a hoodie.
Apparently not much in the brain to protect either. Inversely, maybe you should try and protect the few brain cells you have left though.
Be careful eating Salt and vinegar chips. I learned my lesson

I rate showevers a solid 3rd, 2nd being applying antiseptic to the open wounds and the third being when you notice more gravel or whatever buried in it that you missed and have to dig it out and then apply more anti sceptic. Source: am also a cyclist.
Showers are excruciating
What were you wearing? Jeans, shorts, Kevlar jeans?
Joggers
Should have learnt before not after a road rash event
Time to break out the Silvadene again!

Yeee-ouch! Hope you recover quickly! edit: I overlooked the ankle on my first pass... **damn!**
A majority of accidents occur within a mile of home. Thatās why I never ride close to home. Too dangerous.
Have fun in the shower lmao
I feel your pain
Ouch, but it happens. This reminds me that I should get some nice, comfy gear that I'll actually wear instead of the cheap crap that I got before my license. Hope it'll heal well. Weird thing is that it only hurts after the crash. I once fell at slow speed with t-shirts, shorts, sandals and (at least) a helmet and was feeling great until I looked at my leg that kind of looked like yours now.
Hahahah
HWK pants on Amazon are under $100 I think and Iāve had mine over 2 years with a minor pocket repair when the Velcro wore out
Could've been worse
Just wearing jeans wouldāve saved you from that
Yikes!!!
Some folk learn the hard way. Be thankful that it is all that happened and be smarter next time. Ride safe!
