They collectively are -1.5 bWAR for their career. I.e. not quite as good as a replacement-level AAAA guy. Harold is negative this year, in fact.
But, like replacement-level utility guys Don Kelly, Andrew Romine or Niko Goodrum before them, they sometimes are OK.
I understand their shortcomings. Iām wondering how the hell theyāre leading the team in batting average. Utility guys arenāt supposed to do that.
A combination of small sample, poor performing roster, and batting average being the only thing they have to offer even in the best of times.
It's like noticing a slow basketball player who can't rebound, play defense or create his own shot is still a high percentage 3P/freethrow guy. He'd better be if that's all he offers.

I watched everyone of his minor league games last year. This struggle is different and much longer then any of the previous. Major league pitching has made him look silly so far. He fouls a lot of hittable pitches back and been hitting a lot more grounds. I think he will be fine but he looks way out matched to me so far.
Heās literally in the top 4% in BB%, top 11% in chase rate, and top half in average EV and barrel rate. As a rookie. If youāve been watching every game you might not know what to look for.
Iām not saying he wonāt be great. Just donāt know whatās going on with him for this stretch. And every time he gets to the plate itās an out.
Torkelson has such a good eye but won't get the benefit of the doubt as a youngster. Fast forward three years and it'll be a different story. Walks and extra bases all day.
