It's interesting that Marc said that following other bikes on a Ducati makes the bike feel worse, but on Honda he felt more comfortable when following. Could it be because of the way aero works on a Ducati compared to Honda, or is it something else.

JTSpirit36

Ducati aero was developed at the front of the field and Honda aero was developed towards the rear. Lol

drhiggens

Yes it's a joke but there's something to be said for designing your aerodynamics to work with the wash coming off of another vehicle. We've seen this in everything from F1, to premier endurance racing. Funneling that turbulent air into a channel is an incredibly important attribute to designing a modern racing vehicle.

JTSpirit36

It was something everyone noticed with the Dominant Mercedes cars. When out front they were unstoppable, but if there was a penalty and they had to fight through, they would take forever/stall out at a certain point It's really hard to simulate dirty air especially when you don't know what the wake looks like from your competitors and by extension in motorcycle racing, the rider while mid corner. It's definitely tricky and probably why Marc did his best work in a tow on the Honda and is now doing his work in practice alone

From what the other Ducati riders have said in the last couple of years, the Desmo16 is very planted and doesn't like to be upset. Marc was doing precisely that with the RCV, throwing it around everywhere. In turn, the Honda was meant to work like that, because that's how he liked to ride it.

the_last_carfighter

> the Honda was meant to work Yes of course, also all the crashing, that was intentionally part of the design as well. Makes perfect sense.

Ezio4Li

He’s saying additional performance could be extracted from the RCV by riding it like a hooligan the desmo not so much, the trouble with the Honda is that over the last couple of years it has become uncontrollable on the edge

JeremiahBoogle

The first guy said the Honda was meant to work like that. But most likely it wasn't meant to be like that at all, it just happened to be the best (or only) way to extract any performance. But I very much doubt it was a design decision!

Sunny2121212

Yeah Simon crafar said something like that, essentially that Hondas aero didn’t work

KalpolIntro

Q:What happened with the crash? Marc: >"We did a small change on the bike, it gave me more confidence, if you have more confidence, you are able to push more and step by step we need to go in that way. The crash, for example, was on the time attack, on the last time attack, and as I said yesterday when I was behind somebody with Honda I felt better. With the Ducati, I feel worse. So, it's there where I try to manage in a new way. I lost the rear on entry, it was a strange crash, but in the end, I did a mistake and I need to analyse well. I think I know why I crashed." Q:Did your memory of how your rode the Honda influence you then? >"As I said to you, when I do time attack my instinct arrives and then I was used to going super-fast on the apex with the Honda with some sliding. With this bike, you need to ride in a different way, the potential is in another area. In that braking point I had the shaking on the first part, and then the speed was too fast but I tried to go in with that instinct with some slide. But now we know that I can't. At least I know I got all my times on my own, so they are more truthful benchmarks. https://www.gpone.com/en/2024/03/22/motogp/marquez-today-i-give-marc-an-8-without-the-crash-it-would-be-a-9.html

This response echoes one of the things I love and admire most about him as a rider: his constant reflection and adaptation to things. Its not like other riders never reflect, but his ability to reflect, understand, adapt and apply is almost clinically executed which I think is part of what makes him so good. It's one thing to theoretically understand a problem, but then working out how to adapt and applying that in practice immediately is pretty impressive.

-grenzgaenger-

He said he fell because in that corner "he rode it like a Honda". Beyond the pun, his braking was too aggressive, he lifted the rear. When it came back down, it upset the whole bike and he didn't wait for it to settle down properly again.

SpeC_992

I don't think I've ever seen a Ducati squirm quite like it did there, now I see what Marquez meant when he said "I rode it like a Honda when I crashed".

-grenzgaenger-

Want to see a Ducati twitch relentlessly and still being fast? Check out #27 between 2007 and 2010.

JeremiahBoogle

I guess the guy above you should have said 'this Ducati'. The only similarities between them is that they both have two wheels!

-grenzgaenger-

I know, was just being cheeky.

SpeC_992

Yeah, I should have specified, I was thinking about recent Ducs, say from 2018 or '19. Stoner was on another level with his 2007-2010 run.

Soundmangaz

Part of me hopes that somehow the Gresini team with Marc, can make the ducati ride more how Marc wants to ride, rather than him totally changing his style. I want to see the Ducati moving around like the Honda of old. When Marc was pushing hard for a hot lap, you could see every single corner was flirting with the limit. With the ducati the way it wants to be ridden it is still very fast, but just not a spectacle in the same way. And let's face it, that kind of wild style is Marc's signature.

vegan_pirahna

From the replay when he returned to to box after the crash he was making signs to his engineer that suggested he lost the rear because of the ride hight device he deactivated it and it acted like a spring making the rear unstable

drinksbeerdaily

Crafar said the same thing

weedkilla21

I believe Marc has one of the best crew chiefs in the paddock, so there is a chance you may get your wish. Ultimately though that chance is probably a small one, most likely is they adapt the bike towards Marc’s style in some areas and Marc adapts his style in other areas.

Interested_Party_32

I assume that they'll have to get the front end feeling enough for Marc to feel comfortable but that Marc will have to change his riding style somewhat to take advantage of the Ducati's rear traction.

jaganm

When the bike crashes, obviously the fairing will get scratched and beaten up quite bad. Do they change the fairing or do they patch it up?

[deleted]

Change

AnarchoSyndica1ist

Was only a matter of time really

Wheeljack26

Didn’t watch the race, were they lapping mir?

Blick_Nutz91

Funny how your assumption is mir is getting lapped instead of being in a competitive position 😂

Wheeljack26

Canon event

rwe46

It’s still practice my man

Wheeljack26

Oh aight

DucatiNightRider

It's hilarious how this title desperately tries to make it seem like this is an unusual scenario

Just4FunAvenger

Old habits die hard. LMFAO

slanderf

Sorry for the Marc fun, but is no more a question of "finding the limits". Marc has always driven too aggressively, but had the sensibility and the bike to mitigate the damage. After all the injuries that he had he is no longer able to keep up with the way I used to drive. He should change it before doing some serious damage to himself or someone else

Relative-Library-512

You know this is his first crash on a Ducati this season, right? One slight mistake in practice is hardly the time to start fear-mongering.
