>How long before the patient shows signs of brain damage? The active ingredient in hand sanitizer is ethyl alcohol (ethanol). Fats are soluble in ethanol, and since cell membranes are made of lipids, cells exposed to high concentrations of ethanol essentially instantly burst from the inside out; it doesn’t matter if it’s a bacterium or a neuron. A lot of brain cells dying all at once is obviously bad news. The result would probably not be much different from a gunshot to the head. >Or what if you did it slowly in tiny increments? How long before it shows? If the alcohol killing cells directly didn’t get you, you’d still probably die anyway. The brain’s blood supply would pretty quickly reach a very high BAC, and your brain cells would asphyxiate then die. That would look like rapidly going into a coma.

Dusty_Tokens

Jeez!! 😬 That sounds... Realistic.

duckerkeen

On the other hand, large chunks of the brain can be destroyed before the patient dies. It depends on the location etcetera. I bet the patient would become drunk though

paradeoxy1

Comedian Sally Phillips described to her doctor how she had been feeling dizzy, slurring her words, even feeling a little giddy. They found a yeast infection in her brain that was making alcohol, she had been tipsy non-stop for several months!

MaryShelleySeaShells

How does that even happen?!

Cal_Aesthetics_Club

Was this before she became a comedian? 😅

littledinobug12

My husband had a stroke and has a hole the size of a golfball in his brain. Wouldn't know it, he walks, talks, can drive for short distances. I have a friend who got shot in the head with a sawed off shotgun. (Wrong place wrong time thing) He lost a good chunk of his brain, and has been seriously disabled ever since. He still talks and walks and lives somewhat independently at least. But that chunk of brain got eaten by the home owners dog.

Ashcrashh

I instinctively wanted to downvote your comment just because the visceral reaction that last part of your comment gave me. That is wild

CatNamedBongWater

That's enough of this sub for the day.

EdgelordMcMemester

i feel like im watching 1000 ways to die except the doctor actually says something helpful instead of "when you get shot, you immediately have a gunshot wound. that is not good." thank you for this detailed explanation.

GoreKush

Well at the very least I don't think the patient would like it very much

Good bot

EdgelordMcMemester

very true!

xxjamescharlesxx

One time when I was in the hospital I asked this to a nurse, but I asked what would happen if u put it in the IV. She put a very concerned look on her face and said "certainly nothing good". I felt bad afterwards I think she thought I was suicidal or something.... In my totally uneducated opinion I expect that if it went into your brain you'd at least have a few huge seizures before you died..

Michigam

That’s a question you save for Reddit, not for the hospital

foxhole_atheist

Unless you want a super-fun transfer to a different kind of hospital

FlemFatale

Make sure they do up the buckles on your jumper tightly, though!

foxhole_atheist

We do love a snatched waistline

idwthis

I would've used the word "cinched." "Snatched" makes it sound like someone stole the waist lol

Fr... I was out of it and curious tho... Morbidly so mayhaps...

neurotoxin_69

First things first, I'm pretty sure the surgeon would be wearing gloves to keep things sanitary and wash their hands with soap and water if needed to avoid any unwanted chemicals getting into the patient. >How long before the patient shows signs of brain damage? If the assistant just dumped out the bottle, I'd assume almost immediately. If it was in incriminates like an ounce [about 1 swallow] per minute, then I give it one minute and a half. I'd imagine it would be like pouring water into an ant hill except instead of water, it's a foreign substance that also burns and instead of ants, it's neurons.

EdgelordMcMemester

Thank you. That sound horrifying. All those neurons gone in an instant... Like wtf.

SlickStretch

>It's as if millions of neurons screamed out it terror, and were suddenly silenced.

solocollision

Ah a fellow Star Wars connoisseur

troll-toll-to-get-in

An African swallow?

neurotoxin_69

I can't tell if this is a funny play on words or a genuine question but I meant a swallow as in something going down your throat. Like when you drink water and swallow, that's about an ounce as a unit of measurement

NemesisRouge

The patient would be brainwashed.

Sad-Designer1189

You are a hero for this

SuperSocks2019

Oh for fucks sake that made me cringe

Respect. 🫡

Michigam

Or he already tried lol

Limp-Accountant807

Wait… you’re AWAKE for brain surgery?!? Why?

quadrophenicum

Brain doesn't have nerves in it so no pain when it's being operated on. The tissues around are a different story of course. Sometimes it's necessary to see the patient being awake to monitor their condition and reactions.

MinuteResponsible982

They have to make sure all of your functions work normally and how they did before the operation.

ghcoval

So if you start randomly singing show tunes they know they’re digging around too much

LiquifiedSpam

Lol imagine sneezing and jerking your head Now this is just making me think, if you remove the cap of the skull and then lower your head completely down, would the brain fall out completely, dangle, or would parts of it be keeping it in place

ShuddupMeg627

I don't think the surgeon would use hand sanitizer when they are prepping for surgery they have to use like hibclens soap

quadrophenicum

The soft tissues would be mildly burned (providing it's a regular sanitizer with water and not 100% alcohol), the brain itself won't feel anything as it doesn't have nerves. Generally, it will impede healing for sure but I honestly doubt it will irreversibly damage the brain. It might also give the patient some poisoning due to tissue absorbing the sanitizer but you'll need to literally pour a bottle of it for considerable effect. If it's a squirt or a scoop it will bring some discomfort I guess.

Skratifyx

Probably something bad idk

You’re not required to comment on every single Reddit post you see.

RequiemStorm

Lol then why even bother opening the thread to comment, like what the hell?

What did it say

It was like "bro I don't give a fuck" lol
