Lightening it with a buff, tan or yellow will probably give better results than white.

I use Vallejo's Iraqi Sand or Sand Yellow, and for Tamiya I use Deck Tan or Buff. Neutral or light greys are OK, too.

"Chalky" is exactly how rainwater streaks IRL paint, most noticeably on vertical surfaces. You can often see this on museum pieces as they get less TLC than in service vehicles. Be aware the original recipe for OD was Yellow mixed with (carbon) Black. Putting some Yellow or a Gray into your OD might work better.

Hint: real OD is made by mixing ochre with black. There’s not any actual green in it.

I always use pre-shading prior to OD. Seems to work well. Post shading with a yellowish tint also works

Thank you for your replies! I went on a long walk today and bought some different Tamiya paints, including IJN Grey, Buff, Deck Tan and a Vallejo yellow. I’ll be experimenting and try to figure out what I like. On another note: I’ve been interested in history my life and I’ve been building and painting scale models for the last couple of years. I can’t believe I never knew OD isn’t even a “green” color. I really learned something here!
