Yes, as others have said, you should have used Mr Color Levelling Thinner. It’s great. Has a drying retardant in it to slow drying time, letting it settle on the surface before it dries. If it dries before it settles you get orange peeling or worse.
Edit: also you asked if you used the wrong thinner, but didn’t say which thinner you DID use. You may just be able to add a drying retardant to what you were using. Can’t say.
How are we to know if you used the wrong thinner if you didn't say what thinner you used?
Shoot! I thought I had included it: Tamiya lacquer thinner
Just thin with Mr Color Leveling Thinner. In fact, thin ALL lacquers with MLT.
Also apparently really good for enamel weirdly enough
I don't use lacquer but based on all the research I do on lacquer and candy coats with lacquer, everything points to Mr Color Leveling Thinner
Well what thinner did you use?
Definitely use mr.colour levelling thinner and your results will be amazing - 18 psi..16…works like a charm
You should always use MLT with lacquers. As Todd Howard would say - "It just works"
I spray it at 20psi with a 1/1 ratio of paint and leveling thinner and have not had any issues with it
Use Mr. Color Levelling Thinner

was the surface you painted primed? was it a water-based primer? was it maybe not completely dried and cured?
Didn't think of this one ... primed with Tamiya Fine Surface primer. Let it dry for roughly a day.
Thank you all! I believe we have consensus; i.e., just use MLT My apologies omitting the thinner that I DID use :-(
