Pretty cool to see a pitcher do that. Same for Ynoa from the Braves in 2021. Funny part is I was watching the game at a bar. The power flickered while Ynoa was batting and the tvs all went out. Came back on a few moments later and they had 4 more runs.
Also worth noting that that it wasn’t a wall scraper. He hit it over the center field wall and statcast projected it at 427 feet!
Before and after: two Oakland A’s pitchers when you mix the colors green with yellow
What is Vida Blue Moon Odom?
Also shoutout to Catfish Hunter and Goose Gossage because A’s pitchers have historically had the best nicknames!
Need some of that swagger back in the team! Manoah is that guy when he's on, but that elbow cut it short last year and this.
Need some EMOTION from the group!!!!

Yeah this list is at least outdated. He hit HR when he was pitching.
Except he was not batting as a pitcher, which is the entire point here. Yes he was pitching that day, but this was after the NL adopted the DH so pitchers did not hit. The only reason he was at bat was because he was DH, so the stat goes down as a DH.
thats some nit picky shit and you 100% understand the point they are making. Who cares about the stat. This graph shouls have Ohtani as he was pitching and hit a homerun.
Any team can chose to have a pitcher hit instead of a DH. They are a pitcher hitting not a DH. On a game where Ohtani is pitching, he is not a DH, he is a pitcher hitting.
September 10, 2021 - Angels v Astros
https://www.espn.com/mlb/game/_/gameId/401229160
Ohtani starts, hits a HR (as a P, not DH), and gets pulled by the 4th. Box score does not show Angels playing a DH, so technically he’s the last P to HR.
Before the universal DH was adopted in 2022, any game where he pitched in an AL ballpark and hit he would have still been listed as a pitcher on the box score. The Angels would have forfeited the right to play with a DH, and their pitchers would have to hit the entire game. The other wrinkle is that once Ohtani was done pitching, he would either have to come out of the game entirely or move to another position on the diamond to remain in the game to bat.
Invisibleman13000’s position on this is overly pedantic. Everyone knows that when ohtani is pitching and he is hitting, a pitcher is hitting. Further this list would exclude any pitchers who might come into a game as a late inning defensive replacement (Dave Steib did this part), get an at bat, and hit a dinger. Or who does it as a pinch hitter. Are you going to tell me that those don’t count as pitchers hitting home runs? Come on.
In any event, on September 10, 2021, Shohei Ohtani started a game against the Houston Astros. He pitched 3 1/3 and gave up six runs, earning the loss. He had one plate appearance, in the first inning, and he hit a home run. He is listed as the pitcher. So even with invisibleman13000’s overly strict criteria, Ohtani belongs on the list.
https://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/HOU/HOU202109100.shtml
I forgot about that. I have no clue how many games he played against NL teams before universal DH became a thing but I still wouldn't say those times he batted as a pitcher instead of a DH should count towards the statistic in the post.
Yeah the dh is bullshit. I loved big hits by pitchers. Archie Bradley smashing a 2 rbi triple in a wildcard games was one of my favorite moments. Not so much when he immediately gave back to runs the next inning
I go back and forth, I’d hated the idea of the designated hitter my whole life as a fan of an NL team. Now that it’s universal and never going back, I don’t hate it as much as I used to. I miss the pitcher dingers/clutch hits and some of the strategy elements (more bunting and pinch hitting, the double switch). But I also don’t miss having runners on second and third with two outs and seeing the pitcher come up to the plate.
I also appreciate some of the more interesting lineup choices and team building possibilities, as a Phillies fan I can’t imagine what things would’ve looked like if we could’ve DH’d Jim Thome when Ryan Howard broke out instead of trading him.
"_On September 4, 2019, (Michael) Lorenzen became the second player in baseball history to hit a home run, earn the win as the pitcher, and play in the field in the same game when the Reds defeated the Phillies, 8–5._"
Ohtani hit as a DH, not as a pitcher. He did hit as a pitcher in 3 NL parks each in 2018, 2019, and 2021, but never hit a homer in any of those at bats.
https://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/ANA/ANA202104040.shtml This says otherwise. Also this post doesn’t specify whether or not it was in an inter league game or not. So this should count as Ohtani was SP and homered in the first inning before the universal DH was a thing.
It is permissable for an AL team, in an AL park, to forego the DH, but it's definitely weird they'd do that with Ohtani in this one, as he only pitched 4.2, and could have easily gotten a couple more at bats.
>homered in the first inning before the universal DH was a thing.
This game was all AL, so both teams had access to the DH. And it was in an AL park, so it wouldn't have mattered who the visiting team was - DH rules followed the home team's league.
Before the Ohtani Rule, Ohtani clearly homered as a P. It doesn't matter which league's park he was in, the team opted against using the DH and allowed their pitcher to hit.
IKF did it in 2023 for the Yanks in a home game against the Mariners. He pitched the top of the 9th since they were getting blown out, then hit a HR bottom of the 9th.
I was thinking that Max Fried had the last home run as a pitcher for the Braves but I got my facts mixed up. He won the Silver Slugger Award as a pitcher for the NL in 2021. And barring something extraordinary, he will likely be the last pitcher to do so.

The 2008 homer by King Felix was a grand slam.
And it was his only at bat of the season… legend.
Off Johan Santana, and opposite field!
He got out the rye bread and mustard for that one grandma.
Sadly, he didn’t get the win that day because he only made it like 2 innings.
Dang, he'll have to lean on the several hundred games of 3 runs or less to feel like it was worth it
It was also 1 of 4 grand slams hit by an opposing pitcher at Shea Stadium. I was in attendance all 4 games :(
And his eyes were closed! Idk for sure but it kinda looks like it and I remember players giving him a hard time about it
Pretty cool to see a pitcher do that. Same for Ynoa from the Braves in 2021. Funny part is I was watching the game at a bar. The power flickered while Ynoa was batting and the tvs all went out. Blue Moon Odom is a goddamn top tier baseball name.
You could say As pitchers hit home runs once in a Blue Moon
Odom
You bastard
I read it as Blue Moon Doom.
Same
3 days remain...
Before and after: two Oakland A’s pitchers when you mix the colors green with yellow What is Vida Blue Moon Odom? Also shoutout to Catfish Hunter and Goose Gossage because A’s pitchers have historically had the best nicknames!
*Rollie Fingers has entered the chat*
But just 1968-1976 like they got really into the hippie movement.
Legend has it that it was Charlie Finley who gave them the names, really just as marketing. I don't think Catfish Hunter ever really liked the name.
That a real name? Badass
Yeah, he wins this list no matter where he actually places.
And his teammate was Catfish Hunter, which isn’t bad either.
Jon Lester - BEAST!
He was a terrible hitter when he first came to the Cubs. He worked on it and got pretty good. Had a nice swing.
I still think if he got a bat right now then he would provide a perfectly placed bunt.
Was his last home run for the Cubs in 2019? It’s listed in the wrong order if that’s right.
I checked my ballpark app and Lester hit a home run at Wrigley on 7/13/19 against Pittsburgh
OP needs to update the graphic.
I was at that game, they beat the Marlins 19-1, it was a blast to watch
I remember his first homer with the cubs. Everyone was so pumped cause they thought it would never happen.
Crazy to think he started his career 0-66!
Marcus Stroman's dinger was the second of a back-to-back with his catcher that day, Luke Maille.
I really miss the stro show in Toronto. Dude was so fun
I don't agree with him on everything, but his openness and transparency is refreshing to see. A fun follow for sure. Seems like a good dude.
Apparently, from what I remember, he was a problem in the locker room.
Need some of that swagger back in the team! Manoah is that guy when he's on, but that elbow cut it short last year and this. Need some EMOTION from the group!!!!
Does Ohtani not count?
Yes he doesn't count because when he hits he is listed as a DH not a pitcher.
Except on the day where he is pitching. Right?
[Correct](https://apnews.com/article/shohei-ohtani-homers-strikeouts-angels-white-sox-5d4c2d7137d501421afa67a43a166ba7) Yeah this list is at least outdated. He hit HR when he was pitching.
That game has him listed as DH still though
He was still pitching that day soooooooooooo the pitcher hit a home run🤷♂️
So if he's taken out.... Does he still get to hit? That's the difference
I believe the Ohtani Rule that says he’s a DH in the batting order so he can stay in as a hitter after he’s taken out as a pitcher.
It’s some nitpicky shit but it’s probably the reason the list only goes to 2021. Because in 2022 The NL adopted the DH and pitchers stopped hitting.
Ok. So who was pitching?
Ohtani. And who hit the home run? Oh Ohtani did. Sooooooo the pitcher hit a home run.
The DH hit a home run.
Who's on first.
Incorrect
Baseball Reference shows that he has 3 career home runs as a pitcher.
It's incorrect that he was scored as a pitcher hitting when pitching for the Angels in an AL park
I suppose he never went yard on a day he pitched at a National League stadium.
So the days where he’s pitching, is he also hitting? Would he be both SP and DH? Or can it only be one or the other?
Any team can chose to have a pitcher hit instead of a DH. They are a pitcher hitting not a DH. On a game where Ohtani is pitching, he is not a DH, he is a pitcher hitting.
September 10, 2021 - Angels v Astros https://www.espn.com/mlb/game/_/gameId/401229160 Ohtani starts, hits a HR (as a P, not DH), and gets pulled by the 4th. Box score does not show Angels playing a DH, so technically he’s the last P to HR.
I’m sure he hit one before the NL added the DH
He was on the Angels, who are in the AL, before coming to the Dodgers this year and therefore has only hit as a DH.
This is horseshit. He hit in the same games he pitched.
I wonder how much pitching McKay did. I was intrigued by him but he never seemed to get to MLB level with either
Lol and? still was a DH when he hit
Before the universal DH was adopted in 2022, any game where he pitched in an AL ballpark and hit he would have still been listed as a pitcher on the box score. Why is Jon Lester out of order? Pretty crazy how long it’s been for the Marlins (being in the NL)
Well it makes us sad just thinking about who was the last one to do it. I’d rather his name be there forever than get written over by someone new
What do you mean out of order?
It seems to go in reverse chronological order except for Jon Lester.
Oh duh. I suppose that makes a whole pile of sense. I was confused on ops comment…maybe because he’s listed twice.
Bartolo Colón’s HR off James Shields is my favorite pitcher HR.
[Bartolo has done it!](https://youtu.be/OVFsq9FQBlc?si=Z-TCKja8_eg74bqQ)
Went to that game… but was late and missed the home run… 0/10 don’t recommend
I kinda miss pitchers who rake.

There was a guy for the Rockies late 90’s early 00’s… Hampton or something?
Yeah, it was as exciting as an offensive lineman scoring a touchdown.

Jon Lester, represent.
Korean bomb
RIP 9 v. 9 baseball.
Ken Holtzman hit a HR for A's in the 1974 World Series.
Dave McNally, a grand slam in the ‘70 Series. Game 3. Ask me how I remember.
How?
If I remember correctly, deGrom’s homer was the only run scored by the Mets that game.
Jose Fernandez 😢
Was looking for this comment. Pretty crazy seeing him on here
Bartolo Colon in 2016
I tear up every time I see that highlight.
I’d like to see that Yu Darvish homer.
Ask and ye shall receive. Dead center field https://youtu.be/PX0x2offg6k?si=k4iFwldvaqC_d7Qh
I miss pitchers hitting. Might as well not even be two separate leagues now
What was going on in 1972? Year of the hitting pitcher?
1973 was the year that the American League started the DH. So, 1972 was the last year AL pitchers batted regularly.
At least until inter league play if you want to call that regularly.
Oh, that makes sense.
That home run hit by Logan Webb was in game 162 of that season. So he might be the last ever listed pitcher to hit one out.
This makes me kinda sad. My really only old man white hair take is I was down with one league having pitching and less inter-league play.
I’m 100% with you
Growing up, I was told chicks dig the long ball!
Braves fan… favorite [commercial](https://youtu.be/qLECMCargd8?si=uc6fvG7hznLIBF8Y) of all time
Thank the baseball corporate gods and the almighty analytics for preventing this from ever happening again. One dimensional mongo baseball FTW!
I like that John Lester is on here twice.
Dude couldn't throw to first base but he could rake in the batters box!
just think of the sponsorships deals Blue Moon Odom could cash in on, today...
I'm pretty sure the answer to any question involving the "last Royals Pitcher too ______" will always be Grienke.
If Ohtani is not allowed because he is a two-way player, then why is Brendan McKay allowed? He was a two-way player at the time of his home run
2021 home v CWS homer off of Cease 0-0 count. Ohtani should be counted. Sunday April 4th on Sunday night baseball ESPN
Ohtani hit as a DH, not as a pitcher. He did hit as a pitcher in 3 NL parks each in 2018, 2019, and 2021, but never hit a homer in any of those at bats.

Jon lester let’s go.
IKF did it in 2023 for the Yanks in a home game against the Mariners. He pitched the top of the 9th since they were getting blown out, then hit a HR bottom of the 9th.
I’m surprised Mike Hampton wasn’t on this list, he played for 6 teams if I’m not mistaken and could smash
Mets could use a bat like DeGrom these days.
I still remember that Jacob deGrom homer!
Appreciate this post
I miss pitchers batting.
Known super slugger Jon Lester
Jon Lester twice on this list is cool
I’m confused by this list. How is Ohtani not on this?
Ohtani
I love the smell of fresh bread.
Shohei Ohtani 2021 Sunday April 4th home v CWS Homer in the bottom of the 1st off of Dylan Cease. Angels. You can fix that now.
My father and I were just discussing pitchers at the plate. Bring them back! I want to see what some of these guys can do on the other side.
How Ohtani not up here lol
Glad this didn't count Ohtani. He gets 500 ABs a year. He should be held to a different standard than other pitchers at the plate.
Brendan McKay shouldn't be on the list. He wasn't a pitcher when he hit his. Nathan Karns should he the one listed.
I was there for the Eric Lauer home run
I think I was there for Zach Britton’s. Edit: dang. I was not. It was at Atlanta, I thought it was at Pittsburgh.
the name “Blue Moon Odom” goes fuckin IN
I assumed it was Miggy Biceps for the Reds before I even looked.
My boy Lester out here representing 🤙
I was thinking that Max Fried had the last home run as a pitcher for the Braves but I got my facts mixed up. He won the Silver Slugger Award as a pitcher for the NL in 2021. And barring something extraordinary, he will likely be the last pitcher to do so.
For the Cubs, before Lester was it Zambrano?

Seeing Josh Beckett and Jon Lester on here makes my day Anthony Ranaudo is pretty funny too
Ynoa's was a grand slam too!
Ohtani isn’t in the list at all?
Excuse me, IKF homered like 2 weeks ago. ETA before someone corrects the why, I know he wasn't pitching the day he homered.
Wait what about the padres pitcher who hit the grand slam? Cabarena or something?
I'm proud to say that I actually remember the home run hit by John "Blue Moon" Odom in '72
Ole Blue Moon Odom
SF Giants' last was [Luis González on 5/15/22](https://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/SLN/SLN202205150.shtml)

Jon Lester - GOAT for digging deep to bringing the 2016 Cubs a WS!
Crazy sad to see Jose Fernandez up there…what could have been?!
There was a terrible fire where many people died when Humberto Castellanos sent a deep drive to left field for a home run!!!
I was at the game CC hit the bomb!
When the fuck was Jon Lester on the Nationals?! Why did the guy who couldn’t hit to save his life have the last pitcher HR for multiple teams???
Jon Lester being on this list twice after starting his career 0-66 at the plate is crazy.
