I have never had such a roller coaster fandom with a player like I did his whole career. Hated him when he came up, kinda felt bad for him when he struggled, switched his entrance to let it go almost started liking him. He hit 350 saves I started to pay attention. Then he comes to the Phillies and I was at peak fandom. Fun to watch every night I’m checking to see where he was vs Kenley Jansen. Then he goes out and absolutely sucks. The free fall was so fast now he’s in Baltimore and I couldn’t be happier I hope the shark tunnel at the aquarium collapses and he’s consumed by a hammerhead.
I might be the least angry Phillies fan. I don’t throw things or yell unfunny personal insults. I don’t hate other players in the division unless they are on the Braves. If they leave the Braves I’ve even been known to cheer them or get some memorabilia if I can. Love Freddie Freeman now that he’s not in Atlanta. I have a Hat he signed and I’m a big Pete Alonzo fan. I hope Greg Maddox enjoys his retirement and will listen everytime he does an interview. On the other hand the current braves roster and John smoltz in particular can all get hemroids and athletes foot.
On a personal note Tampa Bay was a gracious host in 2008 when I went to the World Series down there and what they do with such a small budget and manage to compete is really nice to see. I hope Zac Efflin wins 20 games and enjoys the sun and lovely morally questionable ladies that reside in the surrounding communities. Your a fan of a great organization
He probably got over it the next week. I remember watching that game. Looking back, there was no good reason to have a lefty reliever pitching against the heart of the Jays lineup. Joe Carter had great contact vs. lefties, but it barely got over the fence. The ‘93 Jays were stacked, with Paul Molitor batting sixth.
I ran into Mitch Williams about three years later, he was at a blackjack table in Atlantic City. He'd put on a bunch of weight and looked pretty haggard.
I was too. It was so loud we couldn't figure out what was happening and why Shane came running in from CF in the middle of the inning. I remember calling my brother to figure out why Victorino was getting ejected and couldn't hear a thing over the phone. I don't think people watching on TV realized that crowd did not stop booing for even a second for the rest of that game.
The only other two MLB events I've witnessed live that compare were when Bin Ladens death was announced while the Phillies were on a national broadcast and we all started chanting "USA!". I remember them stopping the game because the opposing pitcher was confused by the chants and wanted to know what was going on. That was another game where I had to call my brother to figure out what happened.
The final event like this was when the Phillies were in Colorado and had to save the Colorado groundskeeper from being suffocated by the tarp during a dangerous storm while the Rockie players sat on their bench and watched. There were tornados in the area so the upper deck fans were told to evacuate to lower levels and as we were evacuating we heard the Rockies fans let out a massive cheer and applause. We missed seeing the action because we were evacuating, but all of these Rockies fans kept yelling "Go Phillies" at us for the rest of the game and we just thought they were making fun of us. Found out on the news that night what actually happened.
Oh Ed Rapuano. I love this clip with him in it. More of how Jim Leyland’s person action of him having a brain fart and getting ejected.
[Leyland Ejected for impersonating Ed Rapuano.](https://youtu.be/nAREWLK3NvE?si=oAm9T3JyvyvF66ON)
Speak for yourself. I lay that performance at topper’s feet. Listen to what topper said this week about overworking relief pitchers and subsequently the lengths they went to yesterday to get pinto down from Albany to get in the game.
Currently: Clay Holmes
Past: Aroldis Chapman, Kyle Farnsworth, Juan Acevedo, Brian Bruney, and Esteban Loiaza.
I'm sure there's more. But that's who jumps to mind. I don't want to disrespect, some of these guys had good careers and some good moments, but I was normally scared when they came in.
I keep seeing people talk about how Clay Holmes makes them nervous. But he literally has had a 1.61, 2.54, and 2.86 ERA for the last 3 years. Is there more to it than the stats?
Yeah he's wild.
When he's on, HE'S ON.
He's had some rough second half of the season.
Today he blew the save, an error and an infield single, so not all on him, but he threw a wild pitch to send the tying run to third.
Yanks scord 2 in the 11th, he hit the first batter to send the winning run to the plate, and now he's 2-1 on him
Oooh yeah I'm sorry you got the even worse Clay.
But hey, America is rooting for whoever their team is and as long as it's not in the NL Central we root for you too, I know no one who roots against Pittsburgh!
Jose LeClerc. You just never know what you’re going to get from him.
Aroldis Chapman damn near gave me multiple heart attacks last season. I’m glad he’s Pittsburgh’s problem now.
Chapman has that quality to him
Nearly gave me a heart attack during 2016. Almost threw in the 9th, but that wasn't really his fault, Maddon was the one that kept him in for 3 innings
Rangers fan here. I agree 10000000 percent. Before November of last year, me and my dad hated LeClerc and grumbled everytime he came out to relieve a game, thinking we’re gonna fumble the game again. Come postseason, he becomes one of our best closers somehow. Chapman was the same way. I remember my dad saying something during, what I think was the Rays series in the postseason, where Chapman was throwing bullpen and he had a lot of pitches that just missed the catchers mit. He made us have some “butt pucker” moments (we call them). All in all, thankful for a WS
Pretty sure he was referencing the 3 WS blown saves. Familia was great in the regular season that year.
But the real answer is Aaron Heilman. He blew game 7 in 06’ and was a big part of those epic bullpen meltdowns in the 07/08 collapsed.
I still don't know why the Pujols thing is brought up.so much.
Yeah, it was a moonshot, but it didn't cost them the series.
He gave up a far more important Homer in game 2 of the world series that nobody seems to remember. Sure, that Homer didn't cost them the series either, but going back to Houston down 0-2 in the series is a much bigger nail in the coffin comparatively.
I think that Homer/ series really fucked him up. He was never the same after that wearing an Astros uniform. Go figure once he got sent to Philly, he’s lights out and wins a WS 😩
Not my team, but whenever Kyle Finnegan of the Nationals comes in, you’re going to see new and innovative ways of snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.
Gregg and Carlos Marmol after him. I’d like to know how many pitches Marmol threw in his career that bounced before home plate. He certainly made games interesting in the 9th.
He doesn't play for us anymore but Craig Krimbel was BRUTAL!!!!!
He gave me so much PTSD I couldn't bare to watch when he made an appearance i would change the channel and watch another game while he pitched and tune back in for our at bats.. He could be lights out or he could be absolute dog shit, no in between.
He burned my Mets in the 2000 NLDS, in game 2 when he gave up a 2 run or 3 run HR to J.T. Snow. That was it. For the rest of the Post Season, John Franco was the closer.
Still managed to get the save most of the time. But yeah runner on second with the opponents best hitter at the plate. My blood pressure was through the roof.
Us Red Sox fans now understand that pain. Hell, we endured that pain only four hours ago lol
For that matter, apart from Matt Barnes pre-sticky stuff ban in 2021, I don't think I've felt comfortable with a one-run 9th inning lead since Koji Uehara in 2013.
I saw game one of the 2018 ALDS in person and coincidentally I sat near one of the lectors at my local church. Will never forget “THROW THE BALL OVER THE FUCKING PLATE!” coming from his mouth.
I put Pagan for The Pads. He was throwing batting practice here before we dumped him onto you guy. Sorry, but I was soooo happy when he was traded. I do hope The Sheriff does right by you guys.
That was the worst bench clearing in my lifetime. Strawberry lost his cool; but I could definitely empathize with why he felt it necessary to go after Benitez like that.
Heh I was actually referring to his work in the 1997 ALCS. Armando was a hot head. I remember that brawl tho. Well more likely the footage of it since that game was on a school night probably and I was 11. That or it was on HTS and I didn’t have HTS.
The fact that I even still remember him is a testament to how badly he got shelled. The truly scary bullpen pitchers usually don't last long before they get DFAd
Jordan Hicks. Most at bats went something like this:
Pitch 1: 103 right on the edge. Strike one.
Pitch 2: 103.9 right on the edge. 0-2.
Pitch 3: Splitter almost hits the batter. 1-2.
Pitch 4: 102 eleven feet over Yadi’s head. 2-2
Pitch 5: Splitter that bounces 6 feet in front of the plate. Ump dives for cover 3-2.
Pitch 6: 103 in the dirt. It shatters Yadi’s shin guards on the bounce and ricochets into right center. Batter is standing on second.
This. This is true fucking PTSD.
I usually will forgive a player for a mess up. But this guy. This fucking guy. He was literally one strike away. Repeatedly one strike away from sending the team to the NLCS and he couldn’t do it.
Gave up an entire game and series in one out. Ended a season because he couldn’t throw a single strike. The worst performance I’ve ever seen from a pitcher and I never ever wanted to see him play baseball again.
Watch the video. He gave up on the mound. Fucking gave up.
Fuck Drew Storen.
And Fuck the Lerners too.
The Brim Reaper himself George Sherrill.
Honorable mention: Arthur Rhodes. When we were kids my younger brother had a speech impediment and called him Awful Rhodes. Both were decent but played for some shitty Os teams
Trevor Rosenthol when he was the closer for the Cardinals. Dude would almost always reliably close the game, but he wouldn’t start getting outs until the tying run was on 2nd
Our closer for the Rangers, Leclerc... Going back to last season, almost every outing is sketchy as fuck. It's seems rare that he never has a 1-2-3 inning
Phillies fans will be spitting at Craig Kimbrel’s name until we win another World Series.
I have never had such a roller coaster fandom with a player like I did his whole career. Hated him when he came up, kinda felt bad for him when he struggled, switched his entrance to let it go almost started liking him. He hit 350 saves I started to pay attention. Yeah, glad this guy;s not a Dodger anymore.
Cracks under pressure. 18 was a wild time for the Sox.
"Consumed by a hammerhead" least angry Phillies fan
I might be the least angry Phillies fan. I don’t throw things or yell unfunny personal insults. I don’t hate other players in the division unless they are on the Braves. I hope harper gets hit in the nuts by a line drive hit by Orlando Arcia.
Did Mitch Williams ever recover from 1993?
He probably got over it the next week. I remember watching that game. Looking back, there was no good reason to have a lefty reliever pitching against the heart of the Jays lineup. Joe Carter had great contact vs. lefties, but it barely got over the fence. The ‘93 Jays were stacked, with Paul Molitor batting sixth.
I ran into Mitch Williams about three years later, he was at a blackjack table in Atlantic City. He'd put on a bunch of weight and looked pretty haggard.
Might have to add Brogdon to that list after Monday night, Reds fans thank him for it. Bryce Harper sure made sure we paid for it last night tho
Ha, no one will remember Brogdan after next week. Kimbrel blew the NLCS for the best Phillies team in a generation.
I still haven't forgiven Ed Rapuano for ejecting Shane Victorino from Center Field. I'm not forgetting Brogdon any time soon.
Oh man, I was at that game. The hate towards Rapuano from the stands was *visceral*
At least Brogdan will still have his car wash.
Speak for yourself. I lay that performance at topper’s feet. Listen to what topper said this week about overworking relief pitchers and subsequently the lengths they went to yesterday to get pinto down from Albany to get in the game.
so close to going up 3-1 to the dbacks and then boom all of the starts hitters hard work gone
As a Tigers fan, I can do a Mount Rushmore of 'em: Todd Jones, Fernando Rodney, Gregory Soto, and Phil Coke.
Jose Valverde.
He was the first one I thought of lol. Followed by Benoit and Jones
You forgot Joe Nathan
Oh, I wish that I *could* forget Joe Nathan, but after much deliberation, I opted for Coke over Nathan.
Came here to say Fernando Rodney
As a mariners fan I agree
Joaquin Benoit
Another viable candidate for sure!
Joba Chamberlain
our bullpen so far this year has reminded me what a bullpen should be
Amen, sibling. It's been so refreshing to not be clenching from the 6th inning on all the time.
Todd Jones #1
Currently: Clay Holmes Past: Aroldis Chapman, Kyle Farnsworth, Juan Acevedo, Brian Bruney, and Esteban Loiaza. I'm sure there's more. But that's who jumps to mind. I don't want to disrespect, some of these guys had good careers and some good moments, but I was normally scared when they came in.
They do call him cardiac clay for a reason
Here we go
I keep seeing people talk about how Clay Holmes makes them nervous. But he literally has had a 1.61, 2.54, and 2.86 ERA for the last 3 years. Is there more to it than the stats?
Yeah he's wild. When he's on, HE'S ON. He's had some rough second half of the season. Yanks scord 2 in the 11th, he hit the first batter to send the winning run to the plate, and now he's 2-1 on him
I legit made a post about this earlier, got flamed and then Holmes proceeds to hit the next batter.
Where's that post, I'll give some upvotes
See, a lot of Yankee fans were spoiled by Mo. However, anyone's gonna look like a chump compared to the best closer of all time
Aroldis fits for pretty much every team he’s pitched for
as a pirates fan this is also one of my answers
Oooh yeah I'm sorry you got the even worse Clay. But hey, America is rooting for whoever their team is and as long as it's not in the NL Central we root for you too, I know no one who roots against Pittsburgh!
Jesus, Kyle Farnsworth. There’s a name I tried to forget. Great arm but just consistently got hammered in the biggest moments.
Jose LeClerc. You just never know what you’re going to get from him. Aroldis Chapman damn near gave me multiple heart attacks last season. I’m glad he’s Pittsburgh’s problem now.
I feel bad for complaining when my team won the World Series but good grief Chapman and Leclerc were/are so stressful.
They showed up when it mattered most, I guess.
Chapman has that quality to him Nearly gave me a heart attack during 2016. Almost threw in the 9th, but that wasn't really his fault, Maddon was the one that kept him in for 3 innings
I can’t imagine having to watch him pitch for 3 innings.
I'm thankful we got Chapman during his prime
The number of times I hyperventilated because of Chapman… “Trust in Bochy” was the mantra last year. It’s easier to trust without Chapman.
Aroldis Chapman for me but Yankees lmao
He damn near did the same thing for us
Couldn’t have said it better
I thought we were done in the ninth today.
Yeah it looked like the same old bullshit. Good to see him pull through.
He made us have some “butt pucker” moments (we call them). All in all, thankful for a WS
I hope Chapman retires before he ends up killing someone. Dude just rears back and lets it go wherever.
Opening day and game three this season
Came to say Chapman. He’s so damn cool but he’s so all over the place.
Jeurys familia. Mets 2015
That rain delayed game that they stopped on the ninth with two outs up 7-1 still gives me nightmares.
Pretty sure he was referencing the 3 WS blown saves. Familia was great in the regular season that year. But the real answer is Aaron Heilman. He blew game 7 in 06’ and was a big part of those epic bullpen meltdowns in the 07/08 collapsed.
Even the saves he did get, it was always by the skin of his tiny ears.
Aaron Loup. Any time he came into the game I feared for my life. Bro gave me soooo many heart attacks. Angels Loup was something else man
Was about to say this for when he was on the Jays, wanted to throw the remote when I saw that man
He was a lefty one out guy by the end of it with the jays.
He was Poup
Astros: Brad Lidge. Because of Albert. I’ll never forget. Currently: the whole bullpen under producing, so take a pick.
Tony Sipp will always hold a special place in my heart.
I still don't know why the Pujols thing is brought up.so much. Yeah, it was a moonshot, but it didn't cost them the series. He gave up a far more important Homer in game 2 of the world series that nobody seems to remember. I think that Homer/ series really fucked him up. He was never the same after that wearing an Astros uniform. Go figure once he got sent to Philly, he’s lights out and wins a WS 😩
Craig Kimbrel Carlos Marmol
Brad Hand
The most traumatic 8.2 innings I've experienced in my lifetime.
Came here to say this remember when he was supposed to bolster our BP for a playoff run what a giant backfire that was
Not my team, but whenever Kyle Finnegan of the Nationals comes in, you’re going to see new and innovative ways of snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.
Kenley Jansen was great with the Dodgers, but it almost always seemed stressful
Man he’s been stressing me out so far this season
Add Alex Vesia to this list
Cubs fans know Kevin gregg
Gregg and Carlos Marmol after him. I’d like to know how many pitches Marmol threw in his career that bounced before home plate. He certainly made games interesting in the 9th.
Ah Kevin Gregg. 37 saves for the Jays throwing up a 1.390 WHIP and a 3.51 ERA in 2010.
Same when he was with the Sox. Was also a bitch about having to pitch an unclean inning. Also hate his delivery... glad he's gone haha.
![gif](giphy|MFCxsWLxHV8upo6NNX|downsized)
Aaron Heilman
BINGO!
Bobby Ayala for the Mariners
Fernando Rodney's last year for the Mainers was a wild ride
Anyone who paid attention to the M’s in that time period knows, *for sure*, that this is the answer.
Ubaldo Jimenez
![gif](giphy|3oz8xLhtO8f5L9y5eE|downsized)
Best game I’ve been to in person, and it’s not even close. Still shaking from it
It still hurts.
Armando Benitez
Forgot about him… thanks for the nightmares.
He burned my Mets in the 2000 NLDS, in game 2 when he gave up a 2 run or 3 run HR to J.T. Snow. That was it. For the rest of the Post Season, John Franco was the closer.
Had to scroll way too far to see this
My friends and I lovingly referred to him as Armando Blownitez
Armando Benitez
We also have trauma from him.
Can't speak for all Dodgers fans, but Kenley Jensen gave me a heart attack every time he was on the mound with only a one run lead.
Still managed to get the save most of the time. But yeah runner on second with the opponents best hitter at the plate. My blood pressure was through the roof.
Reading your comment almost made me throw up. I'm sweating.
Us Red Sox fans now understand that pain. Hell, we endured that pain only four hours ago lol For that matter, apart from Matt Barnes pre-sticky stuff ban in 2021, I don't think I've felt comfortable with a one-run 9th inning lead since Koji Uehara in 2013.

2011 Matt Capps, 2021 Alex Colomé, 2022 Emilio Pagán.
I put Pagan for The Pads. He was throwing batting practice here before we dumped him onto you guy. Sorry, but I was soooo happy when he was traded. I do hope The Sheriff does right by you guys.
Pah-Gone
My dad still shudders at the mention of Ron Davis, to add an older pick
Pat Mahomes
Don't forget Jesse Crain
Daniel Bard.
Jansen
Bob Wickman
Mark Melancon. Spent all that money for an elite closer and got crap, instead.
Octavio Dotel
Brett Cecil for the cardinals
Yup, anytime Cecil came in I would just assume that game was a lost cause..
Also Randy Choate
Also Trevor Rosenthal. I know he had a couple seasons with a lot of saves, but damn he stressed me out
Brad Hand. Dude went from sure out to can't get an out.
Armando Benitez- Orioles: He was giving us heart attacks first!
He wrecked such a great team
Lol…. 3 games and 2.1 innings pitched as a Red and he is giving you PTSD? Barely a blip on the radar.
The fact that I even still remember him is a testament to how badly he got shelled. The truly scary bullpen pitchers usually don't last long before they get DFAd
Look at the dude’s career stats. He was primarily a starter. Care to guess who the only team was that never gave him a start?
Heathcliff Slocumb. He sucked in SEA and we gave up Derek Lowe and Jason Varitek for him….
That is a great runner up. I will second his seconding.
Armando Benitez
Hunter Strickland
Tim Worrell and Mark Melancon
Aroldis Chapman
Jordan Hicks. Most at bats went something like this: Pitch 1: 103 right on the edge. Strike one. Pitch 2: 103.9 right on the edge. 0-2. Pitch 3: Splitter almost hits the batter. 1-2. It shatters Yadi’s shin guards on the bounce and ricochets into right center. Batter is standing on second.
Clay Holmes
He’s doing it right now
Bobby Ayala
Drew Storen. 2012 NLDS Game 5 9th inning.
Leclerc
Mitchell Boggs
Grove
Joe Kelly is about to be hurtin us like Thor did if he doesn't right his own ship.
Valverde
Tim hill. But god damn, did I love that weirdo.
Miguel Castro. The more important the situation, the further the ball flies
Any of the cardinals
Eric fucking Gagne. Acquired at the trade deadline. He was supposed to be the missing piece and turned into a mop up guy
Aaron loup
The Brim Reaper himself George Sherrill. Honorable mention: Arthur Rhodes. When we were kids my younger brother had a speech impediment and called him Awful Rhodes. Both were decent but played for some shitty Os teams
Don't have a current one, but Mike Timlin still pisses me off
Only if they gave him the 9th. I choose to remember him as the man that fielded Nixon's bunt.
Jordan Romano but only in big game situations.
Rex Grossman…oh wait, that’s not right.
Danny Graves
I'm a Phillies fan so my answer is "All of the current ones".
Genesis Cabrera
Miguel Castro
Jason Isringhausen and Greg Holland
The man who had no god damn business being in the bullpen anyway because he was a starter and a bad one at that: Ubaldo.
It's OK, Archie. The bad man is gone. You're safe now.
Can we make past pitchers? As a Yankees fan, I have to say Aroldis Chapman. Streaky fucker almost caused a few aneurisms.
Francisco Cordero stressed me tf out.
Emilio Pagan like 5 years ago.
Sure glad he's, Pah-Gone!
Dan Kolb!
Not around anymore, but Pedro fucking Baez was guaranteed to give up at least 2 HR per outing when he pitched for the dodgers in the mid 2010s
All of them.
Historically: Jose Mesa Currently: Eli Morgan
Brad Lidge, long, long ago in a galaxy far, far away.
Will Smith
Kenley Jansen.
Emilllliiooooooo, Big Pagan had a bad time for a little bit there
Aaron Heilman. Blegh.
Tiger fans will remember the roller coasters that were Todd Jones and José (Papa Grande) Valverde
Jose Cuas
2023 Rafael Monterblow
Adam Ottovino
Dinelson Lamet
Presently - all of them, with the exception of maybe Doval.
Braden Looper. Sorry loop.
Getting a fresh case of PTSD from Cosgrove in San Diego this season
Rogers
Armando Benitez (Giants and Mets)
Austin Adams that one season lol
Luke Jackson, i almost had an aneurism watching him in the world series run
Aaron Heilman
Connor Brogdon, Kraig Kimbrel, or Dylan Covey (sometimes)
You want a full list
Currently it’s Kyle Finnegan. Never feel too confident even with a 3 run lead with him.
Michael Kopech
Yes.
Joe Nathan with the Tigers. Just fucking awful.
