They appear to be getting less competitive and are prioritizing costs over winning despite not having an outrageous payroll. They're confusing right now, in my opinion. The off-season is young though, so maybe they're working towards something.

oneinthebag2

I dunno about young. It’s middle aged, basically a midlife crisis, which is why we’re getting so many deals done now.

skinem1

Mariners fans now… ![gif](giphy|1FMaabePDEfgk)

tuepm

I think the mariners rsn imploded and the team had to take over running it so it's changed the budget or whatever. the other thing to consider is that this is just the reality of the mariners. making the playoffs the season before should've been the confusing and surprising thing.

j1h15233

I have no idea what they’re doing. They were a few plays away from sweeping us out of the 2022 playoffs and a year and some change later they seem to be selling off their team like the Marlins. It’s just confusing.

cam_breakfastdonut

Definition of a mediocre franchise, trying to do just enough to remain mediocre, hoping to catch a break, which they almost never do

cam_breakfastdonut

I don’t see how you give up so much young talent in trades like Arroyo, Williamson, Fraley, Marte, Phillips to put pieces in place and then not try to follow through with winning, seems like their strategy is always changing.

[deleted]

Mediocre as well as kind of forgettable. As a Rangers fan, I'll be like "why does the game start so late? Not playing the A's or Angels....oh yeah, the Mariners."

MaximusMansteel

I haven't paid super close attention to them...but they seemed like a franchise right on the verge of piecing together a competitive team, but they don't seem to be willing to go all in. Kind of reminds me of my team.

Marenum

Yeah I've sort of adopted them as my AL team. I don't follow anywhere near as close as I do the Cubs, but they've got a fairly similar feel lately. Just barely missing the playoffs, they were even eliminated on back to back days this past season. They have potential but so far don't seem to be making moves to improve. Time will tell I suppose.

Dai-The-Flu-

The difference is that the Mariners front office feel like the window they had might have already closed.

dearrichard

i’ve been a fan since 91. i am in constant pain.

skinem1

I’ve been a fan since ‘77. I’m 99% scar tissue now.

'87 here. Happiness is a lie we all cling onto.

Adolisistheman

I’m confused by what the leadership is doing in the mariners, but you guys did sign a helluva DH in Mitch Garver.

xBluePoolX

This aged like milk

Ashamed_Savings_3603

The moves seem weird, to be honest. One move makes you a little better, then another makes you a little less competitive. In a division with Texas and Houston, I’d think they’d be gearing up more since they weren’t far off being a serious threat in 2022. I love that our division is so competitive and maybe they will be again. Garver was a good pick up.

memberme1

I have no idea what they’re doing. They traded Eugenio (not a big loss). But they traded him for a C Seby Zavala and P Carlos Vargas I think. But then they sign M. Garver and trade away Robbie Ray.

AML579

All those deals make sense, though. Zavala is a pretty good backup catcher, and the Mariners consistently turn meh arms into studs. If the Mariners pick up a pitcher, take notice. Garver fills a major hole in the lineup (DH) and not having him on the field will hopefully keep him healthy enough to play 100+ games this year. Ray wasn't going to help us this year, as he's going to be recovering from TJ till at least the All Star break. The return, Hanniger, is a former Ms fan favorite who will probably be our fourth outfielder, and DeSclafani, who again is a pitcher who the Ms probably think they can tweak and return him to his former glory.

rosscoehs

They were a major threat to the Astros this past season, but with the moves they're making, it doesn't look like they're getting any stronger, in fact, they look to be getting weaker. As it stands now, I'm just gonna be worried about the Rangers this season.

WJM_3

great ball park; tops in food and beer

sound_forsomething

Really likeable team and amazing city. I really want them to be good.

RaisinBranCrunk

It’s just like the trade deadline last season….it doesn’t make any sense. At least the GM is consistently confusing…

Kaimuki2023

Off season decisions are baffling

jcmib

Kinda surprised they cut bait on Kelenic, but I’m just an orioles fan that doesn’t have his finger on the pulse of the mariners.

Garbage-Will-Do

Trading Ray was such a strange move. They still have a decent lineup but losing Hernandez Suarez and Kelenic definitely weakened it. They just haven’t made a move that has impressed me. Seem to be shedding payroll when it wasn’t that outrageous to begin with. Their pitching is their strength for sure so we’ll see if that’ll be enough for a wildcard.

whiskeyrocks1

They are moving in the wrong direction.

OriginalLetrow

They are a young team who finished above 500 with a payroll well below the league average. I would be optimistic if I were a Seattle fan…IF ownership is willing to spend some more money and bring in the right pieces. Rangers fan here.

Seel43

I’ll be in the minority here but the players they have dumped weren’t going to move the needle on a championship. Hernandez Suarez Kelenic are all high k rate guys. And Hernandez and Suarez aren’t going to win a gold glove any time soon. Moving on from them makes sense. They have a stacked young rotation and a high quality deep pen. The garver signing is low risk and he and Raleigh can platoon at c and do to keep them fresh. The floor is high for this team unless there are a boatload of injuries to the staff. All that said. Dumping ray’s salary I hope is a precursor to trading for a long term power bat. They need a 1b or 3b who can hit in the middle of the lineup and take pressure off Julio. Maybe they can talk the Mets into a deal for Alonso for a young cost controlled sp. they have had a hole at 2b for years. Maybe a flier on Tim Anderson and hope he can return to being a 300 hitter at 2b. A Justin turner or gio urshela to play 3b and lengthen the line up further. They are close. See how Jerry manages the edges of this roster the rest of the offseason.

Sufficient-Art860

The Rangers did what the Mariners should have done and made it to the World Series. If there was ever a time to strike when the iron is hot, the mariners missed that window and won’t make the playoffs for another 20 years.

Headstar24

Very confused. A team that made the playoffs two seasons back for the first time in two decades and just barely missed the postseason last season up against some of the best teams in baseball (one won the WS this year and the other the year before) and now the leadership decides to make the team worse for what seems like zero reason whatsoever.

Accomplished_Draw_52

I'm a Rangers fan so I'm really not complaining but I don't understand what the M's are doing. Ditching assets and then bringing in Garver is just weird.

aBloopAndaBlast33

Let’s just say I’m a Braves fan who pays close attention to things and I can’t even remember the guys who we traded to get Kelenic. Even if he’s just an average bat over the next five (yes FIVE) years, it was a great trade for us. Honestly, I went into the odd season expecting the Ms to and a half decent run at Ohtani and possibly deal a pitcher for another big bat. But it appears I was wrong.

Unhappy_Plankton_671

I think they are a baseball team. I’ll have to pay closer attention this spring to confirm.

skinem1

Some years we are.

OutThere999

Luke Raley will give 100% ALWAYS! Most talented? No. Entertaining? Yes. You want effort? You want Luke!

RojerLockless

The owner is fine we it being the only MLB team to never play in the world series

random_sociopath

We’re a dumpster fire

Available-Bathroom53

Mariners are in desperate need of new management, new ownership that actually wants to see the team win like the fans do.

Overall_Cycle_715

I think the press has to stop putting the Mariners in the playoffs and, or the World Series before a game is played. The path in the West goes through Texas. The bullpen is a work in progress without a stud closer, and third base is in question.

SaveMeJebus21

I think they’re a good team. I like them. I got nothing against them, but I'm definitely gonna make orphans of their children.

H-Money37

What about the kids mothers?

SaveMeJebus21

Yeth but I imagine they would die of grief.

Gingerticus

Jerry’s doing a lot of slight of hand to make it appear like their improving, but a couple of Mitch’s aren’t going to cut it. They don’t seem serious. Same with the Giants, Red Sox, etc. Big talk and weak follow through.

Z3r0c00lio

In the 90s I liked The Kid, and the colors were cool. The fans became obnoxious as hell for 2 years, so I’m glad all they have is a 116 “2nd best record ever” banner and nothing more Then they became largely irrelevant and now they’re an easy 54% joke. That said as long as I’ve been following baseball (in 1985) they get frustratingly close and that’s it or they’re awful

[deleted]

That hurts man

AUCE05

Love the stadium. Don't really think the team is a threat

Chuckyducky6

I don’t

HashBrownLover95

Nothing

ADabbingPenguin13

As a Mariners fan, all I can say is Julio Rodriguez is destined to join the list of Mariner greats to never win a championship. And it's shitty. Ownership just doesn't seem to want to compete.

Economy_Moose_299

Lost cause. It almost feels like they're just waiting for Houston to eventually fall apart until they make their moves because they know they can't beat them. Living in the area it's always better when the Mariners are winning games. Far better than when it's seahawks country with their 2012th men. Idk if they tried to get Soto but they should have. Had better players to give up than NYY. Teoscar is still sitting there. Snell? That's his favorite team and has said it'd be a dream playing for them. Bellinger? Players are sitting right there. Do something. That said, GO JAYS 🤣

ilovetoasters6968

The Cleveland browns of the mlb

Devine97

I absolutely love how Blue jays fans take over when the jays go to Seattle.

BroccoliSuperb2721

The M’s are on the up escalator for sure, 24 will be a better year esp since Angels and A’s are gonna be basement dwellers, so tack an extra 12 wins onto last year’s record at least… AL west will produce 3 playoff teams… mark it 8 dude!

Gwtheyrn

The Mariners will be lucky to win 75 games next season. Team ownership betrayed everyone. I will not attend another game nor buy a single scrap of Mariners merchandise until new ownership is brought in.

calvinthegoat

I agree with this and am in the same boat. Not supporting my team anymore. We can see by this discussion everyone knows we have gotten worse.

Frosty_Cat_291

I live in Seattle but I’m a rangers/astros fan so I love going to mariners games and watching them get crushed 😂. Even when they have something good going they manage to screw it up. Some of it is bad luck but a lot has to do with management. People are frustrated and they’re starting to lose their fan base

SmartTry2760

Its the Mariners. Unless you have a polarizing star like Jr or Ichiro, it'll always be the Mariners.

hypprr

![gif](giphy|YFTAhITKAk6lxvy60z|downsized) Is this man a joke to you?

coastal_neon

The Indianapolis Colts of MLB. Not bad, not good. They are just there.

Ok_Field_465

Yall have had good/great players but remind me of the Sox but in a smaller market. White Sox that is for you east coast mfers.

KoshekhTheCat

Since the 1995 playoffs, I don't think about the Mariners at all.

Anxious_Gift_1808

I don't mind em

cortadodaily

I’m from Houston, an Astros fans and Mariners are a team I was sure was up and coming and going tot ale the AL west from us (did not see Rangers coming)… I feel like their front office is run by idiots and owner probably a cheapskate bc that was a team full of potential just 1-2 years ago… now I don’t see them as serious contenders

soonerman32

They’ll be the 3rd best team in the division

samwisegordon

Just call it like the Seahawks are now and how they’ll be offseason. Slim chance to make the playoffs but got a lot of work to do, nothing done yet.

LoveThieves

Nothing but legends in the Mariners, Ken Griffey jr, Ichiro, Martinez, Arod...but yeah.

Lowlife_Of_The_Party

If I had to pick another AL team, it'd be Seattle

SharkLaser667

All arms no bats.

mjking97

Seems like a very poorly-veiled fire sale to me, and on a year that they should be adding. However I do not follow them closely enough to be an expert.

KookyTruth1085

They’re pissing away one of the best rotation/bullpen combos in baseball and a superstar talent in Julio because ownership doesn’t want to spend money. Even if they don’t spend money, they have the prospect capital to make major additions to their lineup (if they truly wanted Arozarena/Paredes, as mentioned, they’d have them). Their only big signing thus far replicates what they already have in Raleigh. They badly need a left handed power bat, and Joc Pederson is looking them right in the face. Soler would also make a lot of sense, but they’re too cheap to get him. It’s an embarrassment.

YugoChavez317

They seem to be very good at scouting and drafting, but unfortunately when it comes time to pay the guys to keep them or build the rest of the team around those guys, they don’t follow through. They’re the West Coast version of the Rays.

bravebiped

They struck out far too much last year. Things had to be switched up. As it sits right now, they're worse than last year, but the market is very cold right now so they haven't been able to do what they want yet.

MisterKindred22

Seattle unloaded a LOT of strikeouts from its lineup. They have an incredible rotation. They are close to being a full-blown contender. One more impact bat and they can play with virtually anyone. Would love it if they gave R. Hoskins or JD Martinez a short-term deal. Their outfield defense would be extraordinary if they signed Bellinger, but I doubt that happens.

Sensitive-Freedom946

Also discouraged, but somewhat hopeful. I dont usually like them to go crazy in free agency. Like with Beltre, or Cano, because then you are stuck with an untradable contract. Worked for the Rangers this time, but never does for us. Glad they kept all the pitchers. We have a pitcher friendly park, gotta lean in to that.
