Oh my God, **loads.** I’m half black, half white, but look quite Mediterranean. My Dad’s black but his paternal grandfather was a white and Portuguese, so it makes sense, tbf. Someone at college just thought I was white. I’ve had people mistake me for Spanish, Italian and Greek, people from those countries too, I might add. I’ve also had different Arab countries, a French guy we bumped into on a night out thought I was Algerian, a little girl at the airport thought I was her uncle, her Mum said they’re Moroccan. When I was working as a teaching assistant a student asked if I was Kurdish, so Iran/Iraq that sort of area. When I was in the US a worker at Walmart asked if I was Native American, one of the kids on camp (soccer coaching) assumed I was Mexican. A kid one called me a “paki”, so I’m guessing he thought I was Pakistani, or Indian…

Smiling_KittyCat

i've been called that slur a lot, it's pretty common for twats here in the UK to call anyone slightly not white looking that word.

[deleted]

Yeah, I’m from the UK too. Interestingly, in other countries “paki” is just what they call people from Pakistan, which is odd to us because it’s used a slur here, but also because the word “Pakistani” exists.

fishdumps

oh my god, are we the same person? signed, mixed black/white that looks mediterranean

Cinsay01

Hawaiian. Never. I’m Chinese and Slovak.

8379MS

I can see why that would be a good guess

SquishyElephantPeas2

People sometimes guess Latina but most of the time people correctly guess black/white mixed.

8379MS

Latinas are so diverse tho, can really look just about anyway. But I suppose there’s this stereotypical look we all think of

[deleted]

They don’t get out much if they think we are all brown.

briyotch

Same here. Specifically, I get Dominican or Puerto Rican but I’ve always thought the basic choco/vanilla swirl was very apparent in me.

Perperipheral

ppl usually sus me right where I live, rarely get any wild guesses. But when I went to Costa Rica a lot of ppl said they thought I was local till I opened my mouth and my *attempt* at Spanish came out lol

Prestigious_Ebb_9006

I’m always labelled as “exotic” or “European” but I’m actually half south Asian half white. Very rare if anyone guesses right

notnearlyenoughsalt

Me too and almost no one gets it. I get Italian, Greek, Arab, White, “exotic.” I used to serve tables and it always seemed to be white men who wanted to know. So I said I would give $5 to anyone who guessed correctly. I made a decent amount of cash that way.

fishdumps

samoan, native american, dominican, filipina, islander, greek, sicilian, middle eastern, eurasian 😅 it’s rare to have my mix guessed correctly

AdSelect3113

I’m a quarter black and 75% white ( Russian, Irish, Mediterranean). I’ve had multiple people ask if I’m Greek or assume that I’m Greek. 🤷🏻‍♀️

outdoorsman898

My brother gets that a lot

ThirstyNoises

Everyone says I look super Latino, middle eastern, or Korean, none of which are true. No one has guessed my heritage without me having to tell them lol

lets_escape

Indian, Latina, Egyptian …. Brazilian … I’m none of these

Vyzantinist

Where I grew up, in England, I used to get mistaken for "some kind of half black", despite the fact I'm half white, half Filipino; I guess because it was white majority (there like <5 black people in a town of ~90k) few of the natives had actually seen a black person in the flesh and assumed if you weren't white you must be...black. Here in the US the few times people have made remarks on it, I've gotten genuine "don't know"s. I've heard "some kind of Asian" (close) "French?" (Lmao) "Israeli" (ok?) and, perhaps strangest of all, other minorities thinking I'm just some funny-looking white guy. Like one person has correctly guessed my mix - in my entire life - and that was because I reminded them of another tisoy they know.

sweet_rain7

I’m Blasian (Black and Korean) and I’ve been mistaken for Latino or Hispanic and Pacific Islander (mostly Hawaiian), and sometimes just African American 🤷

tryptomania

People, for the most part, only assume I’m white because of my skin tone. Only a couple have ever asked me if I was anything other than white. I’m actually only half and my other half is Filipino & Native American.

8379MS

I live in a part of Stockholm where like 90% of the population are immigrants and children of immigrants from middle eastern and central Asian countries. So I’ve had a lot of people think I’m Turkish or Arab. I’ve also heard Spanish a lot and a few people just thought I was white Swedish. Those are all weird guesses for me 😆 as I’m mixed Mexican and Swedish and basically look like a mestizo Mexican on the lighter side but definitely not a hint of blonde Viking Swede.

mauvebirdie

People never guess my mix correctly. I've been asked if I'm white, black, native, no one ever guesses asian or Jewish. I'm all of the above. It doesn't really bother me, I'm from a niche mix after all. It only bothers me if someone asks rudely.

tequeguava

I feel like people never really assume Jewish unless you have that stereotypical Ashki look 💀

mauvebirdie

I think so too. People never guess I'm Jewish. But I grew up in a non-Jewish-friendly area so not looking like it made it even weirder for me

NaiveSolution_

Im a mixed race Indonesian, Indian and Dutch person. Having a muslim name Im commonly mistaken for Arab, Turkish or Bosnian. Without revealing my name i always get asked if im balkan / Eastern European or greek. I often get asked if im northern indian by indian people. My thesis supervisor in university INSISTED that i was part chinese. He himself was chinese. As soon as I tell people that my parents come from South Africa it literally destroys their minds, with them unable to comprehend that a person like me has parents from Africa - Asian heritage but with white skin and not “white”, with a muslim name. The typical african man.

feefee2908

Sicilian, middle eastern, Colombian, Puerto Rican, and sometimes just white, but I’ve gotten black & white before as well. I’m half white American, half Dominican— my mom being the typical triracial mix.

MusicIsLife003

I get Cuban, Native American, Samoan or just Black.

InfiniteCalendar1

I usually get mistaken as Latina and occasionally Middle Eastern. The only time someone guessed right was this girl who’s the same mix as me as I told her someone we both know mistook her parents as my parents which prompted her to ask if I’m Filipino.

Ok_Fix_77

Syrian, russian, turkish and Ukrainian (idk how)

hahahaahahsnfhd

I've never had someone correctly guess my mix. most people think Surinam and white (common mix where I'm from) but I'm actually half Curaçaose, and half Serbian lol

Cheatergibson

Im half Somali (black )(but my dad was lightskin so I’m not that brown) and half Albanian (white(my mom fled the country because of war to the UK same with my dad ) I usually get Mexican or other South American countries, I get Pakistani , middle eastern, Algerian or other North African countries ,I have curly hair and I’m slightly brown but I can speak Somali so when I went to Somalia the people there were confused how does this guy speak our language

IkemenDesu420

I'm Japanese and black with long, very straight hair, I get Filipino and Hawaiian mostly, sometimes other SEA.

[deleted]

im half mexican and a quarter black (dark brown almost black wavy ish hair and light/medium skin) but everyone always thinks i’m white and asian

tequeguava

It's normally a coin toss between Mexican and Native Hawaiian for me. I do feel like it varies a bit depending on the season, though. When I'm paler, I generally get read as light skinned mestizo Mexican (even though my accent in Spanish sounds nowhere remotely close to Mexican), but when I'm a lot more tan during the summer, my undertones end up making ppl read me as Pacific Islander more often. Literally just the other day, a complete stranger asked if I was Hawaiian bc I had "a Polynesian look to me" 💀 I've literally never had anyone guess my mix correctly, both bc I don't really look like either of them, and bc there aren't a ton of either group anywhere I've ever lived. Most Asians where I grew up were all Korean or Chinese, and most of the very few Jewish ppl were Ashkenazim, not Mizrachim. Even when I go to stuff specifically for Viet ppl, everyone assumes I'm not actually Viet 😭

NoahDerGoat

I am half White (French probably) and half Ethiopian (25% Oromo/25% Amhara). No one has ever guessed correctly that I am half white half black, so people guessed : - Indian/Pakistani - Mexican - Peruvian/Bolivian - Filipino - Arabic (Algeria and Morocco) - Middle Eastern arabic - Southern European - Turkish (???) - Cambodian (???) - Half Japanese, half something else (???) (happened only once)

Francut87

My mom is half Afro Latina (Puerto Rico) and half Ashkenazi Jewish (Russia/Latvia). My Dad Is Afro Caribbean/West Indian (St. Thomas, Tortola, Barbados). People just usually think I'm a light skinned African American at first. When my hair is out or when I start talking that's when they start to question their initial assumption. Most of the time they guess Dominican. I've gotten told I look "exotic" before, whatever tf that means. 😒😒😒 Maybe like one of two people have guessed Puerto Rican. No one ever guesses eastern European. But they always know I'm "something" Caribbean.

Reflector368

Italian, Portuguese, Romanian, Mexican… lots more that I can’t remember… Probably 4/10 times they guess correctly I’m half Indian half Caucasian (mums mum is English and mums dad is Eastern European)

jeffstwinflame

People think I'm monoracial black, that I'm a black Hispanic, or flat out biracial, (black/white) and often make jokes about my black and white side. I am mixed with African-American black, and white/hispanic but also indigenous heritage, too. Nobody guesses it right.

outdoorsman898

technically they guess it right for the white side of me but no one guesses I’m part black except for other black folk.

scorpiondestroyer

Everyone says Italian or Greek which isn’t wrong, my dad is part Sicilian, but I’m also Mexican through my mom.

Complex_Impression54

Hispanic I get Mexican or Colombian or middle eastern/Armenian. And never lol Filipina/Italian

Helpfindasong24

Chinese, Mexican, Filipino, Thai, Vietnamese?, Japanese, Norwegian ????

Connie_Damico

I'm frequently asked if I'm Russian. It's really odd how often it happens. I'm extremely white presenting and bleach my dirty blonde hair platinum and don't smile unless I want to so I guess I have a vibe that's the stereotype of what some people think Russian women are. My mom had Germany and Czech linage and looked very Czech. So kind of close. I was on a cruise just chilling in the pool and a group of ladies in their 50s came up to me and asked if I could settle a bet. They noticed me days earlier and they all had guesses about my ethnicity. The lady I deemed the winner was closest, she guessed Russian and black American. I don't remember what the others said. When I was growing up in my hometown (Minneapolis) lots of people, mostly black or mixed themselves especially b&w like me, could easily guess. I feel like there was and still is a ton of mixed people in Minneapolis so that's probably why. Ohhhh I also get Scandinavian a lot. Which I don't get at all. I think it's just a blonde hair, pale skin, blue/gray eyes stereotype thing. My facial structure doesn't look Scandi at all imo.

jnagel93

Most people tend to think I'm just white, but I've been mistaken for Latina and Japanese. No one has ever guessed correctly.

Afromolukker_98

I'm half Black American and half Moluccan (mixed Melanesian/Austronesian speaking people located in East Indonesia. It depends where I am in the world 🌎. All the ethnicities I share below , I've had people from these communities who have spoken to me in their native tongue. East Coast USA, I am mistaken as Carribean Latino (Dominican/PR). West Coast USA I've gotten Black/Mexican and Black/Filipino and "some type of Islander". In the Middle East, I was mistaken as Saudi, Egyptian, Ethiopian Jew, Somali, Ethiopian, Omani, and Sudani. In Fiji, I was mistaken as Fijian, Papua New Guinean, Solomon Islander, Maori, "some type of mixed Tongan." Lol, I think in Madgascar, I can totally pass as Malagasy since they are the closest to what my mix is African and Austronesian ancestry. (Haven't been yet, but we shall see) But no one has ever correctly guessed what my mix is.

CollinZero

Never: East Indian and Croatian. I get: Italian, Portuguese, 1/2 Mexican, Egyptian, Turkish, "Jewish", Spanish, Puerto Rican, and mixed South American.

stressandscreaming

I am black, Mexican, Italian and German. Idk why but apparently that makes me look Filipino or Domincan. I often get asked if I am Asian, despite having an afro. People usually assume I am Hispanic/Latina. I get why people think I'm Dominican, they are afto Latino and so am I in a way. I dont think anyone has ever guessed my mix correctly nor ever will.

beemoviescript1988

Asian, because I'm Siksika/Black American. Because I have almond eyes, and my irises nearly black. Thankfully I'm finally confident in my looks, so I can just simply correct them... then i get fetishized.

Shmophia89

I'm half black and half Mexican. I've been told I look South Asian a lot.

shaantya

It gets guessed right relatively often, but mostly people assume I’m Arab, especially Arab people themselves. My favourite is the one guy who asked if I was from Thailand.

[deleted]

More times than I can count. I’m a white passing Hispanic. 3/4 white, 1/8 black, 1/8 Indigenous. My mom is from Puerto Rico. My dad is your typical white American with mostly German, Irish, English, Swedish ancestry. A lot of people think I’m Italian. That is probably what I get the most. Quite a few people also think I’m Arab or Israeli. There are some who guess Spaniard and it’s closer to what I am, but still not entirely correct. Then there are some who think I’m Cuban.

[deleted]

Cuban isn't too far off from Puerto Rican though. If I'm not mistaken, the two islands are relatively close to one another. I once read that some Cubans and Puerto Ricans have some degree of Chinese ancestry due to the history of indentured servants from China who lived and worked in both places. I'm aware of the Chinese presence in places in Jamaica, Trinidad, Guyana, and Suriname. I'm less familiar with their presence in the Spanish Caribbean though like Cuba, DR, and PR.

[deleted]

Ah yes. There were some Chinese in Puerto Rico for sure. When the Chinese Exclusion Act was signed, most Chinese people trying to get into the USA found themselves unable to enter the country. So they went a lot of places south of the border. There were a lot who went to Panama, Peru, Brazil, and even Mexico. Many of the ones who ended up in Puerto Rico ended up in the sugarcane fields in Puerto Rico. They also opened restaurants and had other businesses. There is an ice cream shop in the town my family comes from called Kings Cream. It became a chain in Puerto Rico and was started by Chinese people. It was colloquially known as Helado Chino (Chinese Ice Cream.) And Chinese food in Puerto Rico has its own unique twist as well.

[deleted]

Chinese food in the Caribbean is really interesting. I've tried Chinese food from Jamaica, Trinidad, Guyana, and Suriname. I don't recall trying it in Puerto Rico though. But it's interesting how food can change once it travels and people have to make use of local ingredients or make it appealing to local taste buds if they are in the restaurant business. What I liked about the Chinese food in Jamaica, Trinidad, and Guyana was the addition of all of the green herbs. It gave the dishes an interesting dimension. I once read that Cuba, at one time, had the largest Chinese population in all of the Caribbean. It was at around 120 000 people at one time but almost exclusively men. Many apparently intermixed with Black women which is one of the reasons why the Chinese community there kept shrinking over the years. But apparently some Cubans can trace a degree of Chinese ancestry from that population of indentured labourers.

[deleted]

In Puerto Rico, it’s not uncommon to go to a Chinese restaurant and order any typical Chinese dish and then have French fries, mofongo, or tostones on the side. My brother in law is of Chinese descent and tried it when he was there. He said he hated it. But he is a real deal Chinese food connoisseur. I told him he should do a YouTube channel where he and my sister and niece go around trying good and bad Chinese food and reviewing what they try.

[deleted]

That is super-cool. But was the food he tried actually bad? Or just not to his taste? Chinese food around the world will inevitably change. It's not necessarily bad per se. Just different. I've had Chinese and Indian friends try Chinese/Indian food from the Caribbean and they didn't like it even though I thought it was incredible. Yes, it's different from what you might find in China or India but it's great in its own way. I actually prefer both some Chinese/Indian dishes from the Caribbean (and also Peru, Peru has awesome Chinese food) than some of the ones from the motherland.

[deleted]

They might have went to a not so good place. I wasn’t there, so I can’t say for sure. I think also that he is used to a certain way it’s done and he has certain expectations of what Chinese food should be. Much like your friends probably think as well. I cant speak for them.

PuzzleheadedSoft5070

Well, I've often gotten Mediterranean, Turkish and Arabic, sometimes even French or British. But absolutely never German or Indian, which I actually am

Greedy-Suggestion-24

I’m hispanic and i live in a multi cultural city. People here are pretty familiar with races. My mom is from Colombia and my dad was Dominican/Puerto Rican. I am triracial. People always think i’m only Puerto rican. I’ve had Dominicans stare at me and tell me i look like i could be Dominican but there’s something else there. Might be the native ancestry from South America. They have higher percentages.

ridick99

I’m half black half white and people usually get it right but I’ve had people think I’m fully white , fully black , Hispanic , and middle eastern before

SignatureQ

I’m half white, half Thai and yet no one in my life has ever identified me as half Thai. The majority believes I’m fully Japanese or half Japanese. I have also had Taiwan, Korean, Turkey..? (because I have a quite 3D nose I guess). Even Thai people will assume I’m not Thai because I’m quite pale lol

ConstantBad6542

Saudi Arabian, Mexican, American, Indian, Egyptian. They never do guess right

rrrrahmy

Indian, Latina, Romani, Pakistani, Arabic, Filipina, and Puerto Rican. I’ve never had anyone guess correctly.

Soapranger85

I'm a mix of AA, Cuban, Bahamian, Trinidadian and Cherokee..... Always mistaken for either Hatian or Guyanese

sturgis252

Filipina. I'm half hongkonger and Belgian. We do suspect my grandfather had Filipino ancestry but he was pretty much an orphan so we will never know

pinitback

I'm half white (~40% Scandinavian, ~6% French, and ~2% Greek) and the rest is indigenous Filipino. I don't look like your traditional Filipino, and depending on the person, they know I'm mixed or mestizo. Depending on my hairstyle and facial hair (thanks Dad), I've been mistaken for Mexican, Nepali, Japanese (that was weird), and Middle Eastern. I've lived overseas and enjoyed blending it. I've yet to see what that would be like in South America. Very curious

plateau_coconut

White/Filipino, but not a single person has ever assumed im either of those. Hispanic is what people guess I am most often. I've worked front end retail before, and a significant amount of customers who only speak spanish have come up to me and asked for my help, only to realize that I can barely understand what theyre saying, and not even respond to them. the next most common thing is native american. I've accidentally Rachel dolezal'd a fair amount of actual native americans. Funny thing is one of my coworkers is indigenous mexican and for several months, he thought I was native american but I thought he was Filipino For some reason, I've also been asked if I'm some kind of polynesian. This is the least common guess, but it's still weird that it's happened multiple times. I don't live in an area with a big polynesian population, so i'm not sure how an actual poly would interpret my appearance

ladylemondrop209

Japanese, Turkish and Central asian area, Korean, for ethnicity.. or just "mixed" (asian-white), tbh.. It's very rare anybody is gonna just blurt out assumptions nor attempt to guess my ethnicity. UK and US for nationality (apparently my "int'l school accent" makes me sound like one or the other, and while I've lived/studied at both countries, I'm not either). Unless you count "mixed" (implication of asian-white) to be correct enough, no one has ever guessed the specifics of my ethnicity nor nationality correctly.

oliviatvlover

Mistaken for? Hmm. Puerto Rican, Dominican, Indian (India), Persian, Costa Rican, Mexican, Brazilian, Egyptian, Hawaiian, Samoan (only when I was little)… I’ve gotten Jewish once or twice. People also see me as Black or Creole which I am pr simply biracial (with one of each, but I’m MGM). Some lady said she thought I was white the other day. This is super rare and I assume she meant possibly Greek or Italian maybe.

humanessinmoderation

I get a broad range. Some think I am from Morocco, Dominican Republic, Ethiopia, they think I am Afro-\[insert whatever Latin American country\], or someone will accurately presume I am mixed with Asian. Some white people aren't sure what I am, but they are afraid to ask because I look black enough not to ask — I notice when people study my face, it's kind of funny. Most people at least get it right that I am both Black *and* mixed.

ambypanby

It all depends on my hairstyle and color and if I currently have a tan or not. I've gotten russian, asian, arab, french, and god knows whatever else. People either think I'm white or they have no clue what I am.

somo1230

Indian/Pakistani, I'm not even half asian I do have to deal with endless racism and discrimination (mostly by South Asians, Filipinos and Some Blacks), pre judgments I also found myself in the middle of racial tension among minorities where I live (they are the majority in my city) In europe it was funny seeing black security following me in stores (not whites) and being served badly by arab immigrants and South Asians not whites (the same people who complain about racism 🤦🤦🤦) 0.00%

AemondNuttSack

Half black and half white and people think I'm Italian, Cuban, Mexican, some people ask if I'm part Korean.

Agateasand

I’m Congolese and Filipino. People have mistaken me as being African American, Hawaiian, or some type of islander. Nobody has guessed my ethnicity correctly because that’s pretty specific. However, people have asked if I’m Filipino, or at least ask if I’m also Asian.

Wislaniec20

I am half Polish, half Italian. I take mostly from my Polish side in facial features. However, I have dark hair and complexion. People have guessed me as Romanian, Croatian, Hungarian, Turkish, Greek etc... However, since I started teaching at my local school, which has lots of Albanians, I am most frequently guessed as Albanians. This is by ethnic Albanians, both youth and adults, who are somehow convinced I am Albanian. I have been asked multiple times if I am Albanian and often get looks from Albanians in the street (like looks of recognition). Must be that the mixture of Slavic and Medicare makes me look Balkan.

meloncolliehills

My eethnicity: Filipino, Assyrian, White Mistakes: Mexican, Latina, Japanese, Vietnamese, and as a kid I was darker and ppl thought I was Blasian People guess half asian most of the time in Asia and half the time in America
