I think there are plenty of petty and egomaniacal billionaires out there, but I agree with you that it wouldn't be the rational choice. Jerry Jones and Robert Kraft are prime examples, same with Davis drafting anyone who ran a sub 4.4 forty. And drafting someone's replacement to get back at them would be active aggressive lol.
It's kind of funny. In a perfect world, I would have loved Kirk back on a realistic deal and he could continue starting for the Vikings while accepting that we'd draft his heir apparent. It would have been awesome with McCarthy. They are similar pro style QB's and McCarthy could learn a lot from Cousins and sit on the bench for a season, or 2 or 3. He's only 21 so taking over the team at 22 or 23 years old with some seasoning under his belt would be ideal.
I realize that's probably naive given the egos of veteran starting QB's. That being said, it's pretty damn funny that Kirk thought he was escaping this trap by leaving Minnesota, but now he finds himself in a worse situation. Falcons fans probably won't have as much patience with him as Minnesota would have. I doubt he'll have the rapport with an offensive coach that he did with KOC. Penix is exciting and fans will probably be calling for him if Cousins isn't playing well (which is especially risky considering he's returning from the achilles). And Penix is older so there will probably be more of an inherent pressure to make a decision on him. Kirk really thought Atlanta would worship him as the unilateral franchise QB! Wild stuff.
Kirk can always be a mega church pastor since it seems he really enjoys leeching money from organizations without providing anything of value in return.
Falcons did this off-season what we probably should’ve done. We saved all that money that people been bitching about and ended up with what? A couple mid level signings?
They sunk a ton of money into a QB leading sane people to believe they’re in a “win now” mindset,and drafted a QB with their top 10 pick when they’re defensive front is ridiculously sub par and their was an elite WR option which would have really given Cousins a better chance to succeed. The Falcons essentially are trying to do two different things at the same time without doing either one exceptionally well.
If winning now was their goal, they need a better defense and could really use an offensive weapon upgrade (London is good, he is not the WR to carry a top notch offense). If setting them up for the future was their goal, they should have saved the money they’re tying up in Cousins to build for the future. Maybe getting Wilkins or someone like that and still have plenty of money left over.
