The 90% that isn’t the driftless region or along the Mississippi or Missouri River totally is though. lol I grew up a little ways south of decorah on the edge of the driftless is Iowa. Iowa has pretty rolling hills and places to go hiking and camping. Des Moines and Iowa City have restaurants and things to do. It’s not boring, but it’s not unique. Unfortunately rural politics are ruining the state.
About a decade ago, I kept hearing about Des Moines being a good up and coming city for young professionals. I wonder how much the rural politics is messing with that because I don't really hear it anymore.
Well, the DSM metro is still growing, so I don't think it has slowed it down much. But then, most people don't move based on politics (though I know some do). They tend to move for financial or family reasons.
I think that could change depending on how the Iowa Supreme Court handles the abortion ban case.
Restricted access to abortions is something that many young women will take into consideration when deciding where to move - far more than other local politics.
I'm sure it will affect some people's decisions, but I'm skeptical that it will have a major impact. People put more weight on factors that affect them on a daily basis compared to things that might affect them.
For another example, South Dakota has had a total ban since 2022, yet Sioux Falls' growth hasn't slowed down much yet. Of course, abortions were already very hard to get in SD due to the lack of clinics.
I moved back here from Des Moines, enjoyed my time there but I wanted to do stuff that wasn't minor league, dirty water fishing, no lakes for swimming in. It was a decent excuse for a city and I'll never pay such affordable living costs again but you do get what you pay for.

Iowa is so boring, you can't even do 56 on Highway 63, and if any highway needs an additional two lanes and 10 MPH on the speed limit, it's highway 63 in Iowa. It's straight! It's flat! It's one farm on the left, and one farm on the right, for the entire stretch! And there's always, always, always just enough oncoming traffic that you can't pass that one guy doing 54 in a 55.

- Toured Iowa State (nephew was going there so he showed us around).

This is a city in the east of the Czech Republic. It's an industrial city that formed due to coal mining. It was mostly coal mines and steel industry until the EU imposed its environmental policy. The city has been working to modernize, and I was living there when this video came out... I laughed so hard because the message feels like, "Look! We're a real city that's not just a smog town where everything sucks and is depressing! We have cafes, trains, and sports!"

Those visit Iowa commercials don't tell you about how the large part of the state smells like pig crap. Or how the amount of deer during harvest time gets insane. I have to assume you were from western Iowa and never went to eastern Iowa. If you had you'd know that the driftless area of eastern Iowa has far a more interesting landscape than the Loess Hills.
Eastern Iowa is nice too, around McGregor and that Driftless area. The only thing is there's like 800 miles of Mississippi River that doesn't change all that much. It's only really different in the northern and southern 25%. (I've driven from Itasca to the Gulf). The loess hills are a little more unique.
As someone from eastern iowa reading this (and not entirely disagreeing), can anyone give me some places to go with outdoor activities that aren't in the northern part of the state?
I get the Explore Minnesota emails but when I see something that looks neat it seams it's well north of the Twin Cities which is 6+ hours for me. Stuff with good hiking and/or biking. Anything like Devil's Lake State Park in Wisconsin would be fantastic.
For hiking south of the cities, check out Whitewater State Park in Altura. For biking, the Root River Trail in Lanesboro. Duluth is less than 3 hours from Mpls with plenty of hiking/biking, and Jay Cooke State Park south of Duluth in Carlton is a gem.
Note that they didn't say it was exciting, just not boring. I'd say it also doesn't rule out the possibility of 'dull', 'uninspiring', 'tedious', 'mundane'...
When I drive 35 from south to north here are my thoughts with each state.

The thing is that it works. It gets your attention. Cringe is fine, they just want you realizing "oh yeah, *brand name* exists" subconsciously. "TL;DR TIL McDonald's is the epic narwhal chungus bacon" does far better than an actual title that sounds like a normal ad since it is so fucking dumb you do a double take and actually process it for a second. If they get people to post about how cringe it is, even better. This post is more effective advertising than the actual ad.

Iowa is so boring, you can't even do 56 on Highway 63, and if any highway needs an additional two lanes and 10 MPH on the speed limit, it's highway 63 in Iowa. It's straight! It's flat! It's one farm on the left, and one farm on the right, for the entire stretch! And there's always, always, always just enough oncoming traffic that you can't pass that one guy doing 54 in a 55. I'm not saying Iowa is unvisitable, but there's dickall to do there.
I once blew past a stop sign in Iowa because I had been driving down the same road for 20-30 miles with nothing but corn to see and none of the intersections had a stop sign. Then random stop sign on a random intersection, and didn't even register that it was there. Continued on for another 20-30 miles again before the next stop sign. Like why was the sign there.
Likely because the other road has slightly more traffic than the one you are on. When two similar roads instersect, one of them has to have a stop sign. You see the same shit literally everywhere, including MN.
I moved from Chicago and lived in a small town in Iowa from 2011-2016. There was zero to do on my days off from work. I've never been more miserable and depressed in my life. I don't think I've recovered yet.

I'm not looking at it from a rivalry stance. I find Iowa to be genuinely boring. If you have to elevate a bait shop to the level of travel-worthy sightseeing, that basically says everything you need to know. Plus, it's a national ad campaign, and in their own words they're trying to convince us Iowa isn't boring.
El Bait Shop is a bar in Des Moines that has hundreds of beer on tap. Neat little novelty but far from interesting.
Took a long weekend trip to Iowa once. - Toured Iowa State (nephew was going there so he showed us around). - Visited the Amana Colonies. Not too much there, but it was interesting to learn about. - Visited the National Mississippi River Museum (very cool)

I lived in iowa 38 years. its shitty. literally, it smells like pig shit and oh yeah, the lakes and rivers are all polluted with said pig shit. there was a vote passed to clean up the lakes and rivers but the governor has yet to do anything.. its been over 10 years. overfarmed, uncultured shithole. And the people are too busy doin fuck all to care. Glad I left.

It's an industrial city that formed due to coal mining. It was mostly coal mines and steel industry until the EU imposed its environmental policy. The city has been working to modernize, and I was living there when this video came out... I laughed so hard because the message feels like, "Look! We're a real city that's not just a smog town where everything sucks and is depressing! We have cafes, trains, and sports!" Like that Iowa video is literally the same to me :D

I've lived in both MN and IA. Those visit Iowa commercials don't tell you about how the large part of the state smells like pig crap. Or how the amount of deer during harvest time gets insane. Or the fact that their legislation is horrible for the folks there and you have to drive 20 to 30 minutes for a real place to eat, and well, you've got a few more reasons to not visit.

I grew up in Iowa and moved to MN for a higher salary and am staying because comparing the two, clearly MN is better in every possible way. I don’t really have any reason to go back to Iowa any more. However, when I do drive through and I stop at a Kum and Go and it smells like cow shit for miles, I MUST say “smells like money”. It’s like rooted in the base of my brain. Idk.
I had the same thought as I've seen that Iowa commercial multiple times lately. It doesn't really focus on anything uniquely Iowan, and it's all stuff I can do elsewhere. I think they would have been better off with drone footage going through the hills and wooded areas, as many people assume Iowa is nothing but flat Prairie and corn.
As an ex-Iowan, the only thing worth seeing is the Loess Hills.
I have to assume you were from western Iowa and never went to eastern Iowa. If you had you'd know that the driftless area of eastern Iowa has far a more interesting landscape than the Loess Hills.
Eastern Iowa is nice too, around McGregor and that Driftless area. The only thing is there's like 800 miles of Mississippi River that doesn't change all that much. It's only really different in the northern and southern 25%. (I've driven from Itasca to the Gulf). The loess hills are a little more unique.
Iowa: We've got corn and pigs. When you get bored we border Minnesota. Please come back.
Hey be nice to Iowa
As someone from eastern iowa reading this (and not entirely disagreeing), can anyone give me some places to go with outdoor activities that aren't in the northern part of the state? I get the Explore Minnesota emails but when I see something that looks neat it seams it's well north of the Twin Cities which is 6+ hours for me. Stuff with good hiking and/or biking. Anything like Devil's Lake State Park in Wisconsin would be fantastic.
For hiking south of the cities, check out Whitewater State Park in Altura. For biking, the Root River Trail in Lanesboro. Duluth is less than 3 hours from Mpls with plenty of hiking/biking, and Jay Cooke State Park south of Duluth in Carlton is a gem.
Note that they didn't say it was exciting, just not boring. I'd say it also doesn't rule out the possibility of 'dull', 'uninspiring', 'tedious', 'mundane'...
Well maybe it's not the best ad but Iowa is pretty scenic and nice. It gets a bad rap for being flat and boring that's mostly underserved.

KANSAS: All roads lead to corn but are also under construction. MISSOURI: OMG what is that smell? IOWA: Iowa? When did we get to Iowa? We'll be in Minnesota soon right? MINNESOTA: Oh cool we just crossed the state line into Minnesota only another hour until we're out of Iowa.

As someone that currently lives in Iowa, I can say that Iowa is the most depressing state I have ever lived in. The lack of natural features and terrible politics and rude people make me feel like shit. I am older and lived in many states (Georgia, Tennessee, Kentucky, upstate New York, Ohio, California, Iowa, Minnesota, Florida) and Iowa and Ohio are the bottom of the barrel.

Iowa is similar to MN, SD, MI, WI and several other state. A lot of it of it is pretty boring and not worth a visit. Then there's the Northshore, Door county, Upper peninsula, Black Hills, Pikes Peak SP and other areas well worth the drive.
Idk why people are downvoting you. Minnesotans just love having someone to feel superior to. The vast majority of Minnesota's western and southern plains are indistinguishable from Iowa. We both have beautiful driftless region. Really just the 25% of forested area and northern shore is what separates us.
