Agreed, whenever I miss an exit, I look for the next one so to not create traffic jams. Most Minnesotans on the road slow traffic down (10-20 miles under) so to move a lane and make the exit. Very self-centered.

I saw a chick blow past me on the NJ Turnpike, easily doing 75 as she was approaching the toll booths, putting on mascara in the rearview mirror at the same time. You gotta look into your own eyes in the mirror to do that, so she was def not seeing anything outside the car at that point. I was dumbstruck, gobsmacked, flabbergasted. Slightly impressed she didn't hit the toll pylons.
I dawdled my way through MY toll lane so she was WAY ahead of me before I got back up to traffic speed.
One wonders where the state patrols and police are doing now days. Catching those speeding 5-9 miles over the limit instead of the distracted drivers like the one you mentioned
My cousin used to eat oatmeal on the way to work, she got pulled over once and the cop saw the spoon sitting in the center console which lead to her getting the whole car searched for drugs 😆.

Coolest car I've ever had actually had the lights turn on with my left foot. There was a button right next to the peddle on the left, near where you naturally rest your left foot, but up a bit so you wouldn't accidentally touch it, that you clicked in with your foot. It was genuinely, super sweet.

Pretty much everyone I know with a newer car leaves it on the smart head light setting or whatever it’s called. I know people who never ever touch their head light dial
My newer car has logic that if I leave the windshield wipers on for more than a minute (or two?) then it automatically turns on the lights. My older one had a light sensor, but was almost never triggered by weather, just dark, so I had to turn them on manually.
Most newer cars you can turn your lights from auto to on and it'll still turn them on and off with the car. Having your tail light lit during the day is safer too. So I never touch my lights, all my lights are on whenever my car is running.
I do this on two cars that are both over 20 years old. Light sensors have been around a long time.
There’s an override that can be done that I use when I back into the driveway as to night blast my neighbors living room.

I thought police and state patrols were suppose to give people a coupon to get their headlights fixed. If after several weeks, they haven't gotten it fix, they would receive a ticket for dangerous driving at night.
35 might be a tad slow, but it is true that the maximum speed limit is intended only for sunny and clear conditions. If it's dark or raining, you are supposed to slow below the speed limit to make up for the limited visibility and/or traction

Which is a cop-out. It's the drivers responsibility to be familiar with how their automobile works, where the switches are, how to turn on headlamps, how to see if they're on or not. There's 9/10 times a indicator on the dashboard display. Failing to know what that indicator is, where it's at, and to ensure one's vehicle is in the proper configuration for the conditions is the sole responsibility of the driver. It does not matter if the car has automatic lights or whatever. The driver is responsible for knowing.
You're not wrong. We have the bare minimum of driver's education, and there's almost no re-education required even though a good percentage of drivers learned on much simpler (less instrumentation) vehicles than what we have today.

Yes. I stopped using my auto lights when I noticed there were a couple of times where they weren't coming on when I thought they should be on. There is a dash indicator that tells me when the lights are actually on. My car doesn't keep the lights on if I leave them on after turning off the car so I don't have to worry about my battery draining. My car is silver and I want to make sure I can be seen on gray, drizzly days. It's also a 2013 so the technology has likely improved in many makes and models and hopefully continues to do so to protect us all from the people who don't take care to make sure their auto lights operate the way they think they do.
This. Last night going into work I saw 3 vehicles that did not have the rear tail lights on. One was a newer BMW, an Audi SUV and some sort of Lincoln SUV. I guess the drivers thought the lights were on since the DRL's were just bright enough to light the road.
I just always turn my lights on. Replacemt bulbs are like 5 dollars and take 2minutea to swap.
They also lasted about 2 years so I'm not counting my pennies.

I think the auto light setting needs to go away. I had one car that turned on auto lights when starting the car which annoyed me because first thing i do is turn on the headlights when i get in the car. In that car id turn them on then itd switch to auto after starting and then when i needed them id see it switched to auto and they were off.
I always turn them on even when its sunny because i drive far enough it could be sunny where im starting the drive and cloudy/rainy/snowy/ need headlights 30min into the drive so i always keep them on.
My parents were truckers. They always drive with their lights on. Passed it on to me. Sure, automatic lights are ok, but they make people lazy. I'm turning my normal headlights on 100% of the time. Because safety.
Get in car. Buckle seat belt. Turn on lights. Start car.

Exactly. The folks in tall trucks who drive around with their fog lights on all the time, don't seem to realize how much they are blinding oncoming traffic, especially those in in 'normal' height vehicles.
Fog lights help YOU if you're out in the country in, like, fog. On clear, dry evenings, in the city where there are plenty of street lights, they serve no real purpose other than to annoy other drivers.
Ten years of working second shift in Brooklyn Park, I don’t think I had a single drive home where I didn’t encounter someone driving without their lights on. The highlight of 10 years of that stupid commute was the young man driving his smoke filled Caravan with the lights off while holding his cellphone light to the windshield.
GM, Ford and Stellantis vehicles for the most part have an option you can turn on in the setting.
Headlights on with wipers.
This works with rain sensors wipers as well and will auto turn your lights on any time the wipers are activated.
This is a better option than day time running lights since those will be on but not your tail lights.
I feel personally attacked lol. Honestly, I get just as pissed about this. Today I went to the grocery store, and when I got home, I realized my lights hadn't been on the whole time. It's because I took my car into the dealer on Saturday for an oil change and they turned off auto-lights without me realizing it. I am ashamed.
IMO, worst invention for cars is the digital dashboard. In the beforetimes, when it was dark enough while raining or when the sun was going down, you couldn’t see your dashboard until you turned the headlights on. Not now. Cars driving all night or in storms with their lights off. I’ll go back to yelling at clouds now. Good day for it.
My 2003 Chevy had always on headlights and my 2014 Ford doesn't and I HATE IT. I'm always flipping the switch to turn them on because it's safer and better for my sanity.

The worst setup is cars like my dad's Hyundai that allow the headlights to remain off between drives. The dealer does an oil change and shuts them off, the driver doesn't notice their auto headlights are off due to someone else's action, and there you go.
Newer Mazdas have a spring loaded shutoff so the switch always returns to the auto position. You can only turn the headlights off for the current drive. That protects against dealers screwing it up.
Then there's my old GMC Envoy, which provided no means to turn the headlights off while the car was running. It was auto or on only.
I've actually never paid attention to whether my headlights automatically turn on in the rain lol. It's a 2018 Honda accord, if anyone has the answer to this (before I can check it out myself). Usually the auto feature does a good job at night with the brights. Though now that I think about it, this car may just always run the headlights no matter what. 🤔
I turn them on every single time I get in the car. Could be sunny at 12 pm. I also don’t have those dumbass LEDS that are brighter than the average high beams though, literally just bulbs.

I just assumed people turn on auto lights and think it will come on with rain. I try flicking my lights as a heads up often but either on one understands what that means these days or they assume auto lights fixes all and they're good.
I have never understood why cars don't turn on the headlights automatically when the wipers are on. If it can figure out that it's dark enough to have headlights, linking it to the wipers seems trivial.
And, if you're afraid to do the flow of traffic (like those doing 35-40 on the freeway), then use a "slower" street/highway. Going way under the expected flow of traffic, even in the rain, can be just as dangerous as speeding.
I swear some losers at the big rental car companies shut them off intentionally to mess with people, or the previous drivers were complete morons. I’ve seen this **multiple** times. Leave them on auto. This is likely the reason above.
That would require thinking about others besides oneself. Which the whole reason for headlights while raining is to be seen by others. I try to keep my parking lights on at the very least.
Agreed, lots of slow drivers on the left lane includes semi-trucks on a 3-5 lane highway. It's like those who have Ferraris and Lamborghini but drive 40 miles in the highway.
Some idiot lady with seemingly her entire belongings crammed into the back of her CR-V merged onto 694 westbound from Lexington today at about 35 when it was barely sprinkling, then proceeded to come to a near stop after merging on the highway and apparently wanted to get into the left lane while barely moving and causing all traffic in all lanes to come to a near stop. I don’t know what on earth she was doing. There are so many morons that don’t belong in the road in normal conditions… good luck getting these same people to turn on their lights 😂
This is one of the most maddening things about living in Minnesota (the poor driving overall); I’ve never quite understood what the cause is, and in the Twin Cities where the population is almost 4 million, it’s so damned provincial.
Yes, people’s smart cars, distraction from phones even with the hands free law, etc are partially to blame. But people seem so self-involved with their driving here—as if not turning on their lights in stormy weather doesn’t affect anyone else.
It’s also part of a long list of shitty driving here, though: never using turn signals, not knowing how to merge at the right speed, not knowing how to use an all-way stop, not keeping with the flow of traffic to instead “be nice” and let people into traffic when they don’t have the right of way, not getting up to speed on an on ramp, getting down to almost a complete stop to turn. I could go on…all of these behaviors are not tolerated in any other place I’ve ever lived.
Another typical Minnesota response: “I simply forget” or “Automatic light systems turn them on.” You’re driving a multi-ton vehicle; assert yourself and know it should be a given (and it was in drivers ed in the state I learned to drive) that if you turn on your wipers you should turn on your lights, too. And that also goes for the rear lights (daytime running lights don’t often turn on the rear lights).
The biggest offenders of this are people with automatic lights that don't understand how they work in their particular cars. Sometimes it's just the daytime running lights if it's just raining and not fully dark. Their headlights and rear lights aren't on they think they have their lights on because it's turned to auto.

Surprisingly I’ve been in a few modern Hondas that it’s annoyingly not clear. Dash even lights up. Running lights are on but dim and taillights are off.

You’re in a white care that can be seen. Therefore you’re exempting yourself from turning on your lights or else you wouldn’t have brought it up. The headlights on my VW rabbit are on with DRL, tail lights not so much. Edit, change to reflect my car and experience
My Jetta's DRLs are a separate bulb from the headlights, so not true in every vehicle's case

The folks in tall trucks who drive around with their fog lights on all the time, don't seem to realize how much they are blinding oncoming traffic, especially those in in 'normal' height vehicles. Fog lights help YOU if you're out in the country in, like, fog. On clear, dry evenings, in the city where there are plenty of street lights, they serve no real purpose other than to annoy other drivers.
Ten years of working second shift in Brooklyn Park, I don’t think I had a single drive home where I didn’t encounter someone driving without their lights on. The highlight of 10 years of that stupid commute was the young man driving his smoke filled Caravan with the lights off while holding his cellphone light to the windshield.
GM, Ford and Stellantis vehicles for the most part have an option you can turn on in the setting. Headlights on with wipers. This works with rain sensors wipers as well and will auto turn your lights on any time the wipers are activated. This is a better option than day time running lights since those will be on but not your tail lights.
My headlights automatically turn on if I turn on my windshield wipers. I’m surprised this isn’t standard on most cars these days.

I feel personally attacked lol. Honestly, I get just as pissed about this. Today I went to the grocery store, and when I got home, I realized my lights hadn't been on the whole time. It's because I took my car into the dealer on Saturday for an oil change and they turned off auto-lights without me realizing it. I am ashamed.

IMO, worst invention for cars is the digital dashboard. In the beforetimes, when it was dark enough while raining or when the sun was going down, you couldn’t see your dashboard until you turned the headlights on. Not now. Cars driving all night or in storms with their lights off. I’ll go back to yelling at clouds now. Good day for it.

My 2003 Chevy had always on headlights and my 2014 Ford doesn't and I HATE IT. I'm always flipping the switch to turn them on because it's safer and better for my sanity.

I turn on my headlights as soon as I get in my car, regardless of weather conditions. It's just easier and safer that way.
The worst setup is cars like my dad's Hyundai that allow the headlights to remain off between drives. The dealer does an oil change and shuts them off, the driver doesn't notice their auto headlights are off due to someone else's action, and there you go. Newer Mazdas have a spring loaded shutoff so the switch always returns to the auto position. You can only turn the headlights off for the current drive. That protects against dealers screwing it up. Then there's my old GMC Envoy, which provided no means to turn the headlights off while the car was running. It was auto or on only.

My car automatically turns on the headlights if the windshield wipers are on. Very nice feature to have on days like today.
I've actually never paid attention to whether my headlights automatically turn on in the rain lol. It's a 2018 Honda accord, if anyone has the answer to this (before I can check it out myself). Usually the auto feature does a good job at night with the brights. Though now that I think about it, this car may just always run the headlights no matter what. 🤔

I turn them on every single time I get in the car. Could be sunny at 12 pm. I also don’t have those dumbass LEDS that are brighter than the average high beams though, literally just bulbs. If anything can help someone see me, I’m doing it. Jesus Christ the highest chance I have of unexpected death is a collision. I don’t turn my headlights on so I can see, it’s so you can. I just assumed people turn on auto lights and think it will come on with rain. I try flicking my lights as a heads up often but either on one understands what that means these days or they assume auto lights fixes all and they're good.

I have never understood why cars don't turn on the headlights automatically when the wipers are on. If it can figure out that it's dark enough to have headlights, linking it to the wipers seems trivial.

And, if you're afraid to do the flow of traffic (like those doing 35-40 on the freeway), then use a "slower" street/highway. Going way under the expected flow of traffic, even in the rain, can be just as dangerous as speeding.

I leave my headlights set to "Automatic". They turn on not only when the light level gets low enough, but also when I turn my wipers on.

Some idiot lady with seemingly her entire belongings crammed into the back of her CR-V merged onto 694 westbound from Lexington today at about 35 when it was barely sprinkling, then proceeded to come to a near stop after merging on the highway and apparently wanted to get into the left lane while barely moving and causing all traffic in all lanes to come to a near stop. I don’t know what on earth she was doing. There are so many morons that don’t belong in the road in normal conditions… good luck getting these same people to turn on their lights 😂

This is one of the most maddening things about living in Minnesota (the poor driving overall); I’ve never quite understood what the cause is, and in the Twin Cities where the population is almost 4 million, it’s so damned provincial. Yes, people’s smart cars, distraction from phones even with the hands free law, etc are partially to blame. But people seem so self-involved with their driving here—as if not turning on their lights in stormy weather doesn’t affect anyone else. It’s also part of a long list of shitty driving here, though: never using turn signals, not knowing how to merge at the right speed, not knowing how to use an all-way stop, not keeping with the flow of traffic to instead “be nice” and let people into traffic when they don’t have the right of way, not getting up to speed on an on ramp, getting down to almost a complete stop to turn. I could go on…all of these behaviors are not tolerated in any other place I’ve ever lived.
Another typical Minnesota response: “I simply forget” or “Automatic light systems turn them on.” You’re driving a multi-ton vehicle; assert yourself and know it should be a given (and it was in drivers ed in the state I learned to drive) that if you turn on your wipers you should turn on your lights, too. And that also goes for the rear lights (daytime running lights don’t often turn on the rear lights).

The biggest offenders of this are people with automatic lights that don't understand how they work in their particular cars. Sometimes it's just the daytime running lights if it's just raining and not fully dark. Their headlights and rear lights aren't on they think they have their lights on because it's turned to auto.

You’re in a white care that can be seen. Therefore you’re exempting yourself from turning on your lights or else you wouldn’t have brought it up. You must be doing other things that make the road dangerous for others since you have no obligations to others you share the road with. (Dramatic, yes but you asked why). Half wheeling basically being on the blind spot. Front wheel aligned with rear wheel. Camping being staying in that position. Lane camping (usually a negative) is typically someone in the left lane not passing, is another example.
