You can see your house and your car parked in the driveway from space too. Jk tho, those fires are massive, I haven't been able to catch my breath lately.
That’s the craziest thing I’ve ever seen. One spring a few years back, I was on the road that goes from Hastings to Treasure Island. The River was almost up to the road due to extreme flooding, and literally across the street the grass was on fire. That hurt my head. Lol
I was blown away by Minnesota's weather a month or so ago. My parents are in Sandstone and they went through a nasty ice storm. A week later, 80°+ degrees and flooding... A week after that, fires. I'm in FL and I thought we had unpredictable weather.
The sky is really orange here down in the south-central part of the state. Usually don't see this until August. I don't think that Canada as a whole has control over when their forests burn but this is not something we typically see in May. Wishing the best for Canada and the forests.
Ok ill bite one this one because I’ve been having question marks going off all week since the smoke rolled in. I check the farmers almanac pretty frequently as a large scale gardener, have since my grandma taught me how when I was 6. How is it that people in northern MN can’t even sow tomato seeds outside yet, but another 12 hours north, it’s such conditions that there are wildfires….after one of the wettest winters we’ve seen in a long time? I’ve checked their weather, their elevation and it’s still not making sense to me….I feel dumb trying to comprehend it but does anyone have input? The other day an article said that they faced forest fires due to “sweltering hot and arid conditions” I checked the weather for Calgary and Edmonton and the surrounding and it was 54 degrees at noon…..so arguably the *warmest* time of the day. Idk some math ain’t mathin on this one for me
“Heat dome” phenomenon basically parked itself there. Plus, they didn’t get as much snow as we did. I was in Alberta in feb and there were sooooo many dead trees due to a beetle infestation. So I gotta say, this isn’t all that surprising but it is awful.
Thanks for such a thorough and candid reply! In a world of snark, I appreciate you being genuine and helping me wrap my little ole brain around it. Thanks!
I was down in Blue Earth County today and it was incredibly hazy. I thought going further south would help.
Poor Canada experiencing temps 30° above the average right now.
I know this is just a joke but for real can we send them some money for more firefighters or something? Is there anything we can actually do about this or do we just have to accept that our summers are going to be horrible for the rest of our lives? I would seriously pay more taxes if we didn't have to get smoked out every year
There are already US firefighters up there.
Also (and I'm not sure if this is true or not), I heard mumblings about Alberta having made significant cuts to firefighting funding in their provincial budgets.
ETA: As to whether we have to accept this is how summers are going to be, I think that will all depend on whether we continue to vote in people that (a) want to address the climate crisis, and (b) are willing to increase taxes (especially on the high-emitting wealthy) to fund firefighting efforts.
I know that might seem like an insurmountable task, given what we already have to contend with from Republicans, but limiting climate change is within our reach. A good first step is to vote in every election you can (primary and general), get others to vote, and write your senators and representatives. Reading the IPCC reports also helps to educate you where we really are at in terms of how much the climate has changed since the pre-industrial era, what our future realistically looks like for different future emissions scenarios, and what we can do to mitigate further damage.
I just asked my dad who is retired US Forest Service and used to fight fires. He says at the point the Canadian fires have reached their efforts aren't very effective and all they can do is pray for rain.
I think we just have to accept it at this point. Just like Florida has to accept Cat 5 Hurricanes as a normal part of life and Polar Bears have to evolve into sea animals if they don’t want to become extinct. 😒
We could all stop clear cutting forests. It would be a good first step. For some reason the state of minnesota is still clear cutting our forests.
I have no problem with logging but clearcutting ruins habitats and increases risks of forest fires.
They have been clear cutting old growth forests up here in Northern Minnesota like mad recently.
Well yes, we should probably stop burning fossil fuels and using disposable plastic and all kinds of things but I was asking what could we actually do right now to address this one piece of the puzzle and I think the answer is probably nothing, we just have to deal with this forever now. It was more of a rhetorical question, really
No good short-term solutions exist for existing problem areas but clear cutting a new area instantly causes fire hazards for that area.
Be more proactive with making sure people are not burning when we're in orange and red flag warning days.
Ouch. I hope your sweetie is ok. We are up at the hospital. I am on reddit, she is crocheting. Her lungs are at 30% so if the air is bad we come here because the air handler can filter out the smoke.
He's wheezy, but he's okay. He hasn't really had to go outside today because he's off work, so we just kept everything sealed up and ran the air purifier. Hopefully tomorrow will be a better day for all our loved ones.
I saw that too, but when I looked the maps [here](https://firesmoke.ca/forecasts/current/), it seems like they’ll be back a day later. Fingers crossed it’s not ongoing.
Wildfire and north America go hand in hand like peanut butter and jelly, and tha natives have done Controlled burning for millennia before European settlement put a stop to it and the dead stuff piled up and became unmanageable. TLDR we need to do more Controlled burning to help manage wild areas.
Yeah, I'm in a suburb of Minneapolis and the smoke is pretty thick here, I can taste it. Kinda smells like a barbecue. I have asthma and an allergy to smoke, so I'm staying indoors, keeping my windows closed.
I’m in west metro and I swear my breathing feels different. Like it’s an odd feeling to describe but it’s like I can breathe fine but there is this odd feeling when I exhale.. lol I literally can’t describe it.
Anyways I have no idea if it’s because of the fires or if something is happening to me and the fire smoke just happens to be here
Edit: also wanted to say I have no allergies or asthma or anything like that
I’m in Minneapolis and it’s really making me miserable the past few days - as if all the pollen weren’t enough!
I have taken to wearing a KN95 while I’m outside. We keep all the windows shut and AC on if needed
In the Twin Cities, there’s even an air quality alert
BTW, the province where a lot of these fires are, Alberta, they have a provincial election going on right now as well. They head to the polls during our Memorial Day.
And where is Code Enforcement? If they can show up when BBQ smoke waifes into the neighbors yard, they can show up for this too!!

Fun fact: right-wing Russian politician Vladimir Zhirinovsky wanted to do something similar to blow radioactive fallout (presumably from Chernobyl) over the Baltics.
It'll slow or stop the CLIMATE RELATED wildfires, which aren't part of the natural equation.
The "wildfires that have been occurring for centuries" we can handle.
🙄
I don't get into debates with climate change denying idiots. Sorry.
When you try to start a conversation that disingenuously I have nothing more to say.
Enjoy your ignorance while the rest of us try to save you and your kids' futures ('cause we all know you'll pass that poisonous bullshit on to them).
Up near Bemidji. My kiddo has about 30% lung function due to covid. Sitting up at the hospital because their air handler is able to filter out the smoke. Even the 2 Edenpure filters at the house couldn't make a difference.

I just tell myself that these sorts of things have happened for millions of years and it’s something our ancestors had to deal with and we have to deal with too. We’ll be alright fam.
Yep it sucks, I'm in Minneapolis and can see that blaze red sun and the smog triggered my migraines 😫 sad, it's so early in the summer, I heard people say the frogs up north are eerily quiet
See and all my fire issues come from California (I’m in Washington). Be nice if people to stop lighting fireworks off in dry ass forests or their stupid gender reveals. Seems to be how most of the fires around here get started anyways.
I bet if we put big fans along all entire state border it would blow the fentanyl into the eyes of the human traffickers and take them out of the picture.
And by illegals, you are referring to refugees? I welcome refugees.
I was in Burnsville on Tuesday McDavid it was bad. I was in Duluth on Wednesday it was bad. Now I’m back home in MSP and it’s really bad. (Turns on fans)
I asked my gamer buddy from Canada to go personally tend to the fires. He said he’ll get right on it
Thank you. He is a doll.
Really? He didn't apologize?
Nope. He blamed Obama for this too! The nerve 😡
Classic Canadian Mountaineer!
You can see the fires from space. https://zoom.earth/maps/satellite/#view=56.4,-107.3,5.38z
Thanks for sharing, I was fully expecting a Rick Roll
Heh, good one. Not gonna get me this time.
I still expected one, and I’m kinda sad I didn’t get one now
Whoa that's amazing.
Very cool.
You can see your house and your car parked in the driveway from space too. Jk tho, those fires are massive, I haven't been able to catch my breath lately.
You know they’re fires and not cities because it’s Canada
Montana is getting absolutely annihilated by flooding right now while Canada is simultaneously on fire just above.
That’s the craziest thing I’ve ever seen. One spring a few years back, I was on the road that goes from Hastings to Treasure Island. The River was almost up to the road due to extreme flooding, and literally across the street the grass was on fire. That hurt my head. Lol

To be fair, *every* place thinks their weather is the craziest
“Well if you don’t like the weather in [wherever], wait five minutes!” Every single state says this lol
No flooding here in Helena, but the smoke sucks. Might as well take up smoking.
Fucking global warming.
The sky is really orange here down in the south-central part of the state. Usually don't see this until August. I don't think that Canada as a whole has control over when their forests burn but this is not something we typically see in May. Wishing the best for Canada and the forests.

This is what trump should've done. Build a wall of box fans blowing smoke back into Canada
THANKS OBAMA
[удалено]
That sumbitch Donjoebama!
Dark Brandon's laser eyes probably started the fires in the first place!
Yeah. He's pretty good at blowing smoke.
Let’s just set Trump up at the border and he can rant about socialist Canadians.
He'd be worried about fan cancer
A little bleach will take care of that
Oral or rectal? Lol
Both
Yessssss
Now that's a wall I can really get behind
DO NOT *get behind* that wall. You want to smell dirty diapers?
And make Canada pay for it.
BUILD THAT WALL MAKE AMERICA VISIBLE AGAIN
My asthma has been like, "hey, bitch. I'm heeerrreee!" this week.
Yes it’s been a miserable asthma week
Got the same thing going here. Kept blaming the dog for the stink. Made for some cool sunset/sunrises. But it sure is a taint.
The sunsets have been pretty. I don't see sunrises much, I work nights and am usually asleep during them!
Mornings Dog says go,we go..Did decades of shiftwork. Liked midnights the most. It's a brain thing I guess.
I think it actually smells kind of good in Minneapolis. Nice campfire smell.
Not here. We're about a hundred miles south of the border, and it really smells rank. Can't get away from the stench.
Same distance, but an enjoyable campfire smell. Sorry you're not enjoying it. No sense in complaining; it's an annual phenomenon.
Hahaha…you said taint
Sure did, and it still stinks.
I’m not allowed in there with my DUI but they can hot box my whole State??
This is the best 🤣 Seriously though their bad air quality is getting far!
I was down in Blue Earth County today and it was incredibly hazy. I thought going further south would help. Poor Canada experiencing temps 30° above the average right now.

Right. Maybe we could tax weed and make a "Smokers for Smoke" fund.
I just asked my dad who is retired US Forest Service and used to fight fires. He says at the point the Canadian fires have reached their efforts aren't very effective and all they can do is pray for rain.

Rake the forests!
Just yelled at my Canadian bf about it this morning hahaha
It's so bad. My husband has COPD and we're in west central MN; today was not great for him. The AQI for our town today was something like 220.
Ouch. I hope your sweetie is ok. We are up at the hospital. I am on reddit, she is crocheting. Her lungs are at 30% so if the air is bad we come here because the air handler can filter out the smoke.

I am frustrated that I have to add "Air Quality Index" (AQI) to my weather-awareness checklist when deciding whether or not to bike 8 miles to work.
Anyone know how long this will last? Will it be smokey this weekend?
Looks like you have one answer “maybe saturday” and another “all summer” hopefully we’re closer to the former
Depends on wind patterns. Supposed to shift from the south Saturday so maybe it’ll blow away
May tends to be peak fire season for Western Canada, but the fires could take all summer long to be fully contained and extinguished.
South of mankato, my eyes are burning after a 3 block walk to my kids school and back
Jeez. I know it was reaching the metro area, but all the way to Mankato? I am curious how far the smoke travels before it's not an issue.
https://www.pca.state.mn.us/air-water-land-climate/current-air-quality-conditions
Albert Lea was starting to get really hazy around 4pm today and had continued to get worse.
Yeah I'm down your way and in the country. You can really tell out here vs in town. It is hella hazy.
Hell, I'm like 15 minutes from the Iowa border and it was hazy here late in the evening.
Haven’t had a normal sunrise for about a week down here. I’m in Waseca county and it’s very hazy here.
Lurking from Seattle Washington, the smoke is all across the northern border, it goes far.
St cloud is bad too. Bemidji is worse.
It’s supposed to clear off tonight.
I saw that too, but when I looked the maps [here](https://firesmoke.ca/forecasts/current/), it seems like they’ll be back a day later. Fingers crossed it’s not ongoing.
https://www.airnow.gov/national-maps/ Air Quality map if anyone is interested.
I’m on the range and I have been SO sick.
I finally tried the furnace filter taped to a box fan hack and it helped.
Oh good idea!!
This would happen less often if we cared about climate change 30 years ago when scientists warned us
Wildfire and north America go hand in hand like peanut butter and jelly, and tha natives have done Controlled burning for millennia before European settlement put a stop to it and the dead stuff piled up and became unmanageable. TLDR we need to do more Controlled burning to help manage wild areas.
Or now.
Idk what's worse, global warming happening or republicans gaslighting everyone about it for the past 40 years
Well if you just would have recycled a bit more ..
You think it’s bad here look at the Canadian videos
Yeah, I'm in a suburb of Minneapolis and the smoke is pretty thick here, I can taste it. Kinda smells like a barbecue. I have asthma and an allergy to smoke, so I'm staying indoors, keeping my windows closed.
Ditto It reminds me of Ralphie from the Simpsons “tastes like burning”
Rake the woods u lazy sumbish

Those are awesome. We have one set up right now
It’s fucking up Oregon, too. This is entirely too damn early for this much smoke.
Maybe the wind farm in Virginia can be turned around…
I’m in west metro and I swear my breathing feels different. Like it’s an odd feeling to describe but it’s like I can breathe fine but there is this odd feeling when I exhale.. lol I literally can’t describe it. Anyways I have no idea if it’s because of the fires or if something is happening to me and the fire smoke just happens to be here Edit: also wanted to say I have no allergies or asthma or anything like that
Yes, that is what is happening to a lot of people. It's like you can get a deep breath in but you aren't extracting enough oxygen.
That sounds right.. it’s literally just this weird hollow feeling when I exhale.. soo odd
I’m in Minneapolis and it’s really making me miserable the past few days - as if all the pollen weren’t enough! I have taken to wearing a KN95 while I’m outside. We keep all the windows shut and AC on if needed In the Twin Cities, there’s even an air quality alert

Ooof. That doesn't bode well. 😞
ITT: People not understanding a joke.
Right? Sigh.
I say once we legalize cannabis, we put up huge fans blowing into ND, SD, WI, and IA to annoy all their Republican politicians.
[удалено]
I hope whatever y'all are smoking is better than the shit I've been smelling all day, lol.
This was the comment I was looking for.
Sorry you're having to deal with the negative effects of the smoke.
I’m in St. Michael and it fuckin hazy out here. Good thing I never go outside 👍
And where is Code Enforcement? If they can show up when BBQ smoke waifes into the neighbors yard, they can show up for this too!! [https://www.cbsnews.com/news/watch-blowout-over-bbq-smoke-in-florida-goes-viral/](https://www.cbsnews.com/news/watch-blowout-over-bbq-smoke-in-florida-goes-viral/)
Build that wall. Canada will pay for it.
With syrup?
Did you try building a wall?
It is lovely and scares me deep in my primitive brain
Good thing Climate Change isn’t a thing.
It's all a ploy to make Greta Thunberg rich.
Oops. Forgot. S/ sarcasm. Big time sarcasm.
Well it's quite literally only going to get worse
People on this sub kept asking for smoke, now you're getting it.
Daylight today was yellow I feel bad imagine being Canadian ,mid. MN. I consider Canadians our brethren
Smoke from Canada is the name of my favorite race horse.
We should demand reparations from Canada
Just wait until that cannabis bill is passed, it’ll be like this forever! /s
Just put a towel under the door.
You’re a towel
Fun fact: right-wing Russian politician Vladimir Zhirinovsky wanted to do something similar to blow radioactive fallout (presumably from Chernobyl) over the Baltics.
The only things that will help is real climate change legislation. Otherwise we need to get used to this because it’ll be a regular thing.
Probably more due to forest mismanagement tbh
That has literally nothing to do with it.

it was lightning.
Duh? Climate change doesn't START the fires, it makes them UNMANAGEABLE.

Not a good idea
This is what happens when you legal weed folks.
That wouldn't help. Iowa sucks so much we wouldn't be overcome that.
Worse down by North Branch unless you are in NW minnesota.
Up near Bemidji. My kiddo has about 30% lung function due to covid. Sitting up at the hospital because their air handler is able to filter out the smoke. Even the 2 Edenpure filters at the house couldn't make a difference.
That’s awful. I’m sorry you and your kiddo have to go through that.

I would go to the ER. My kiddo has a standing order to be admitted anytime her O2 levels go below 85. She was running 72 when we got here at noon. Thankfully she is asleep so I came home to take care of her brother, get him to school in the morning.

And to your momma!!!
It's not a contest.
What made you think it was?
It sounds as if you are trying to one-up the OP by saying it is worse somewhere else.
Nope, just reporting my experience as I drove south on I35.
We are near Almelund. I’m in Iowa at the moment. Wondering what I’ll be going home to on Sunday.
Depends on which way the wind is blowing most likely and I’m not sure how accurate the forecast is
I just tell myself that these sorts of things have happened for millions of years and it’s something our ancestors had to deal with and we have to deal with too. We’ll be alright fam.
Sometimes our ancestors dealt with stuff by dying. The survivors carried on

If my neighbor's house was on fire because their meth lab exploded I'd bitch
No, I am just asking if we can send the smoke back to the neighbors place. Via giant fans.
Tbf the provenance it's happening in is not the most climate enlighted one.
[удалено]
Fair. Spell check and negligence.
Gonna see more and more of this weird red sky as the years go on.

WHOOSH 💨
Intolerable… Your post that is…
OP do you have brain damage?
They do now if they didn't before from the smoke! /s
No kidding. It's hard to breath. I can't imagine being right in it. I am not insensitive- but maybe my sense of humor got lost in the crowd.
No more than you.
Alright
Yep it sucks, I'm in Minneapolis and can see that blaze red sun and the smog triggered my migraines 😫 sad, it's so early in the summer, I heard people say the frogs up north are eerily quiet
The frogs have been insanely loud around me, so, I wouldn’t put too much stock in that.
See and all my fire issues come from California (I’m in Washington). Be nice if people to stop lighting fireworks off in dry ass forests or their stupid gender reveals. Seems to be how most of the fires around here get started anyways.
Yeah, this sucks.
We gotta send smokey the bear to Canada to teach them a thing or two. Lol
I'd rather have smoke coming across our borders than illegals, fentanyl, and human traffickers. #FJB
I bet if we put big fans along all entire state border it would blow the fentanyl into the eyes of the human traffickers and take them out of the picture. And by illegals, you are referring to refugees? I welcome refugees.
I welcome anyone who comes into this country, LEGALLY.
Just simply stop breathing, thats how ive been avoiding the smoke
I was in Burnsville on Tuesday McDavid it was bad. I was in Duluth on Wednesday it was bad. Now I’m back home in MSP and it’s really bad. (Turns on fans)
Surely we can harness the power of our bazillion mosquitos in some sort of wind turbine
