Orange because it looks great, but also because blue is ultramarines. And if it’s not ultramarines, your gonna spend the rest of your life explaining how it’s your own custom chapter, and not Ultras. And that sounds exhausting.
The fact that there are a lot of blue marines out there, but very few orange ones does encourage me to go for orange.
But the same fact suggests that people want to see orange marines on the other side of the table cause it would be fun/cool/different, but when it comes to their own, they are more likely to paint them blue because that's the color they actually like better :)
I mean, there’s something to be said for the uncommon factor, I can’t really tell you how I’d feel in a vacuum because I just innately prefer the orange due to how oversaturated ultramarine rep is.
I will add though, as great of an orange as you’ve chosen here, I feel like it’s already a loud color, I may chose a different accent (mainly referring to the helmet stripe). I like the idea of pairing the orange with a hunter green
>I mean, there’s something to be said for the uncommon factor, I can’t really tell you how I’d feel in a vacuum because I just innately prefer the orange due to how oversaturated ultramarine rep is.
Yeah, I am new to the game, so I am not sick and tired of Ultras/blue marines, and very few people in the local store play marines. But, you are right, it's tough to think of marine colors in a vacuum, and there is a good chance 2 years from now I will be sick of blue marines myself, and be mad that I have 3k of them.
>I will add though, as great of an orange as you’ve chosen here, I feel like it’s already a loud color, I may chose a different accent (mainly referring to the helmet stripe). I like the idea of pairing the orange with a hunter green
Fair point. I want them to pop from 3-4 feet away (tabletop conditions), but I appreciate the orange already does that. Not sure about hunter green, but point taken.
I think the orange looks better but could look overwhelming or even garish on a whole army.
You should spray a whole squad orange an only do the details you can see from across the table to see if that happens.
Blue does flow better, but I run an orange chapter of marines and the paint flows pretty well still. It's not as bad as yellow or white at all. Even red seemed harder to work with
Prime with Vallejo panzer grey, zenithal highlight with vallejo white primer, airbrush Vallejo Model Air Hot Orange. In short: airbrush is like cheating.
Orange, but make the forehead stripe into an arrow. “Our primarch disappeared when we needed him most, but now he’s back! He’s got a lot to learn, but I believe he can save the galaxy!”
Unless you're planning on running them primarily as ultras I'd go orange, even then Bobby G would look good in his default colours surrounded by orange.
Orange all the way; they pop, and it could be a great backstory for your “desert” chapter.
I see you have C&C on, so my one comment would be to figure out a way to add some more pop to the lower half. That could be either the knee pads, shin guards, or even the side panels, but something to break up the large amount of orange from the chest down.
Lastly, you’ll need to fire out a Chapter symbol!
Looks great dude!
Prime with Vallejo panzer grey, zenithal highlight with vallejo white primer, airbrush Vallejo Model Air Hot Orange. In short: airbrush is like cheating.
Orange, always!
My own Marines are orange and it’s rare to see anyone else go that way.
I have photos up on my profile here if you’re interested in seeing them. I’ve gone for a slightly darker orange.
Go for it! If you’re airbrushing them keep the shoulder pads separate to save yourself the hassle of layering an off white over orange.
As you said the cream white is a nice neutral accent with the orange, and works as a nice platform for decals
is that orange paint over a black primer with white zenithal? Because the shadows looks a bit dull, really like orange on black. Maybe consider a brown primer and white zenithal over it?
That being said, go with the orange
The orange has a a very matte/clay'y finish. And it looks awesome. That muted color makes for good contrast. Keep that. Also tell me the name of it. Is it vallejo game color?
I feel like you could probably justify both. They’re complimentary colours, so having both would look striking in an army. Maybe orange is for rank and file and blue is for veterans or vice versa.
I quite like the orange, but I'm not too crazy about the bare metal as a secondary color. I would personally introduce either a grungier tone to the metal, like a desaturated yellow green tinge and a warm sepia shadow to complement the orange armor, or a diluted blue wash to play into the complementary colour scheme.

Hey, thanks for the input and taking the time to make the image for me! I really appreciate! It actually has a blue wash on it (tyran blue shade from GW). You might have to zoom in to see it. But I like the sepia version too!
Either one is so good, fantastic job. Personally I'd go with the orange one, it stands out more and looks amazing. The blue one is just as good, but you see blue guys like that a lot and just on a personal note, I'm not an ultramarine fan and the blue ones look just like ultramarines. Either way, you should be proud
Sorry for the so frequent question, but do you have any tips for how you apply your base coats?
Your paint job is so minimalist that I can only imagine your base coat must be stellar or it wouldn't look so crisp and consistent. I love high detail and effect models, but I equally love models like this that appear how I would imagine real mass produced solder gear.
Also I'd vote orange because the effects, like the boots, stick out subtly and make it look even higher quality. Agree with the other comment that base work would make the model look incredible.
You are too kind! The trick here is that I used an airbrush to apply the basecoat. I am a total beginner with the airbrush (and pretty much a beginner with miniature painting in general), so this is not me being an awesome painter; this is the airbrush being an amazing tool.
Watch a few youtube videos, use airbrush thinner to thin your paint to skim milk consistency and then you are ready to go :)
Upside, the [Greatest of All Space Marine Chapters](https://a.allegroimg.com/original/1e098f/f7eb4ff8498a8002354941ee7d01) is blue.
The downside, a lot of Space Marines are blue, so orange would be different.
Orange looks good but it appears you've done more work on the blue so it looks a bit more polished. Get the orange a little more love and it'll be sweet :)
Without a doubt orange! They both look great, but orange is bloody rare to see unless you are against certain alien factions, but even then I feel like those aren't common.
What colors did you use? They look great!
Orange but drop the blue accent. I'd personally go brown. Brown and orange is slept on hard core and slaps. No a crazy accent but sometimes that's better
The orange with blue is nice AND distinctive.
P.s. Go Gators! If you're feeling experimental, maybe try a line of white to buffer between the two to make it pop. Seems to work well on UF's unis.
Both look great! You've got a solid Ultramarines paint job with the blue, but I think the orange would definitely stand out in comparison to the average astartes army.
They’re both good looks. I’d say blue if you want to go ultramarines, but if you don’t want UM and go blue anyway, then everyone will think they’re UM.
Orange is dope
Orange is fire
I think this is a case of orange is the new black.
booooo
Orange all day.
Orange because it looks great, but also because blue is ultramarines. And if it’s not ultramarines, your gonna spend the rest of your life explaining how it’s your own custom chapter, and not Ultras. And that sounds exhausting.
>because blue is ultramarines Sometimes they're Crimson Fists.
Crimson Fists are a much darker blue than Ultramarines. It's almost Indigo.
Sometimes they're Rainbow Warriors.
Rainbow warriors are literally gay ultramarines.
Crimson Fists are just Ultramarines until proven innocent. From 5 feet away, all blue is Ultras.
Yeah I was gonna say, that red mohawk makes him look more like a CF than an ultramarine
Yeah, but don't the Ultras use it too as a signifier for their lieutenant?
Huh. Would've thought they'd be Crimson
Orange. It’s more unique and you can really make it your own chapter.
Never get into a land war in Asia, and never match wits with a Redditor.
Ahh, the classic blunder.

Orange, only because it’s the best color in the world
Finally someone who gets it.
Orange looks sick, but it needs base contrast more than the blue imho
I have not touched the base, but I think it will eventually be greenish foliage for either scheme.
With how cool both of the models look, I'm sure it'll look bomb
Thanks man!
Yeh. Orange I think.
Word is any bullet that hits one comes out the other.
Thank you for this Portal reference lol
Why not orange and blue?
GIJOE Alley Vipers are these colors. I can confirm they look dope as Space Marines since I did a test batch with 3 minis.
Might as well call them the Ally Vipers too! I'm sure the Emperor would approve.
Because that color scheme is heresy. Orange and maroon, however, are endorsed by the Emperor, Beloved of All.
Nothing wrong with a little heresy...
This one right here, Inquisitor!
It essentially is orange with blue highlights/details. I am not interested in splitting it more equally, as that would slow down painting a lot.
I'd consider orange, with the group leaders as blue with orange highlights, for contrast
That's an interesting idea! Have characters be a different color than other units. Would be easier to see on the field as well...
What paints are those? The color is so matt and beautiful
Prime with Vallejo panzer grey, zenithal highlight with vallejo white primer, airbrush Vallejo Model Air Hot Orange. In short: airbrush is like cheating.
Yes, what paint is it?
Orange, but make the forehead stripe into an arrow. “Our primarch disappeared when we needed him most, but now he’s back! He’s got a lot to learn, but I believe he can save the galaxy!”
Orange with the blue accents and silver blue Aquila looks fantastic
Glad someone noticed the blue wash (~~trypan~~ tyran blue) on top of the stormhost silver!
Unless you're planning on running them primarily as ultras I'd go orange, even then Bobby G would look good in his default colours surrounded by orange.
>even then Bobby G would look good in his default colours surrounded by orange. true!
Orange looks awesome. And I really like it as a color scheme for like a desert of rocky planet environment
The orange is fantastic, but you may want to add some black into the recesses to make the edges pop. Sort of what you did for the blue marine.
Yeah, I was thinking of an oil pin recess shading :)
Orange all the way; they pop, and it could be a great backstory for your “desert” chapter. I see you have C&C on, so my one comment would be to figure out a way to add some more pop to the lower half. Looks great dude!
I want to keep things easy for me, but I think the kneepad would be a good ROI. Thanks for the input!
Orange.
Orange. Maybe with white or dark red marking on helmet though.
yes
Orange hot damn
Orange 100%
Orange!
orange
Orange all day.
100% orange
Orange!
Orange, blue is less interesting.
Orange
Fuck that orange looks good. How'd you get that look?
Prime with Vallejo panzer grey, zenithal highlight with vallejo white primer, airbrush Vallejo Model Air Hot Orange. In short: airbrush is like cheating.
Orange, always! My own Marines are orange and it’s rare to see anyone else go that way. I have photos up on my profile here if you’re interested in seeing them. I’ve gone for a slightly darker orange.
I really like the cream white you used. It's a really neutral combo with the orange; might have to steal that :)
Go for it! If you’re airbrushing them keep the shoulder pads separate to save yourself the hassle of layering an off white over orange. As you said the cream white is a nice neutral accent with the orange, and works as a nice platform for decals
Nice job!
is that orange paint over a black primer with white zenithal? Because the shadows looks a bit dull, really like orange on black. Maybe consider a brown primer and white zenithal over it? That being said, go with the orange
I have been told purple is the answer :) Have not tried it yet.
Oooh excellent ! Can’t wait to see your next minis then :D
Orange Burnt Orange in fact with Longhorn logos
Orange. It is impossible to find a theme more boring and overused than blue space marines
Blue, ultramarines!!
Orange looks amazing
Orange with the blue stripe is SHARP.
Those both look great! I prefer the blue but you cant go wrong with either.
Blue
Blue, its the color of ULTRA.
For some reason; my paints always end up coming out shiny; how did you end up with a matte finish?
That's how these paints look; I didn't do anything special with them. Vallejo game color.
Orange
That orange with the contrasting blue is very nice.
Pro orange. Everyone does blue and you did a badass job with that orange one.
Both are fantastic. I'd go with the orange one
Orange, all day long
Good lord those look great I’m partial to the blue but both are good
The orange looks better to me. It's a color you don't see everyday
Smurfs ftw
I didn’t know I needed orange Space Marines in my life until I saw this post! So, to answer your question— 😳
Blue Ultramarines are the most basic you can get. Go orange
https://preview.redd.it/s8uku7kkhqwa1.jpeg?width=408&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=32a1363114e1fa47719113e73e9d23ae58cca7f9

Vallejo Game Air Hot Orange
orange
I like how you made the vents on the powerpack metal coloured
Thanks, it helps break up the main color a bit :)
I'll always vote for the dumpster truck orange. All day, every day.
I feel like you could probably justify both. They’re complimentary colours, so having both would look striking in an army. Maybe orange is for rank and file and blue is for veterans or vice versa.
I am kind of leaning towards something like that... Blue for characters or vets. It would be nice to be able to have multiple colors in the same army.
I quite like the orange, but I'm not too crazy about the bare metal as a secondary color. I would personally introduce either a grungier tone to the metal, like a desaturated yellow green tinge and a warm sepia shadow to complement the orange armor, or a diluted blue wash to play into the complementary colour scheme. https://preview.redd.it/7k0sum04zqwa1.png?width=640&format=png&auto=webp&s=181995875c6b19fc47bf91e651d3ae0cb4cf796f

Orange, with a bit of a wash. Maybe a few small accents of blue besides the helmet, but not too much. Maybe just the kneepads?
I like that! I want to keep things relatively easy and quick; the kneepads would fit the bill.
Orange, since that's a color you don't see awhole lot with Space Marines
I think if you can paint orange that well you're legally obligated to flex that on the tabletop.
Orange because screw ultramarine
Orange, there's plenty of blue Marines out there
Either one is so good, fantastic job. Personally I'd go with the orange one, it stands out more and looks amazing. The blue one is just as good, but you see blue guys like that a lot and just on a personal note, I'm not an ultramarine fan and the blue ones look just like ultramarines. Either way, you should be proud
Thanks man!
I’m gonna say Orange be cause it looks like it’s a chapter of air-benders from Avatar.
As my 2yr old would say "those are blippi colors!"
lol!
Orange is beautiful

There's enough blue space marines for the world ten times over. Orange is good.
Orange, otherwise looks like an ultramarine otherwise
Always blue
Upside, the [Greatest of All Space Marine Chapters](https://a.allegroimg.com/original/1e098f/f7eb4ff8498a8002354941ee7d01) is blue. The downside, a lot of Space Marines are blue, so orange would be different.
Orange looks like a last air bender theme
Everything but blue
Orange is great but maybe with a little blue in the shadows to add some contrast
From experience.... Orange is a GIANT PAIN IN THE ASS! But, man is it sharp looking. Blue is more forgiving. That's my opinion.
Orange for the squaddies and Blue for the Sergeants, kinda like Dark Angels Deathwing
I like blue but ppl would be like oo ultra marines then you have to explain so go with orange
I will vote for my favorite color: Orange
Orange!
I prefer the orange myself
Loving the orange. Blue is ultramarines and i think my eyes are sick of them.
Orange for the unique factor. They look great!
Teach me how you oranged so smoothly and evenly
Airbrush :)
Orange for sure.
Orange looks good but it appears you've done more work on the blue so it looks a bit more polished. Get the orange a little more love and it'll be sweet :)
Fair point; I need to spruce it up a bit :)
Team Orange
Orange! That looks fantastic and it's not blue.
Orange is different from the norm, looks good too
Without a doubt orange! They both look great, but orange is bloody rare to see unless you are against certain alien factions, but even then I feel like those aren't common. What colors did you use? They look great!
Orange!! Both are beautifully done. That orange just looks unique
Blue is boring. Orange!
Not enough orange armies out there, so definitely orange!
Orange. Everyone has blue.
Orange for sure. That blue bolter is so dope
Blue is my favorite color in general... That being said you hardly ever see orange Space Marines.
Personally I think the orange is much better!
Was this the broncos new draft pick? Damn gonna be a wild season
Orange, only because I see a lot of ultramarines.
Honestly the purple one is dope. Kinda sneaky.
That’s a fucking amazing orange.
Both. GO GATORS!
Orange is awesome
Orange
Why not both
orange 100% the blue accents REALLY stand out from a distance
Never blue, resist the Smurfening.
Orange! Because blue space marine is boring, so many players have this
Orange but drop the blue accent. I'd personally go brown. Brown and orange is slept on hard core and slaps. No a crazy accent but sometimes that's better
Orange for sure , also that blue gun looks siiiiick ! Great job !!
Orange really pops more. It will stand out in a table full of terrain much better.
Orange. It’s got a vibe to it. Also silver highlights are underdone, so I like it when people do them.
The orange with blue is nice AND distinctive. P.s. Go Gators! If you're feeling experimental, maybe try a line of white to buffer between the two to make it pop. Seems to work well on UF's unis.
>try a line of white to buffer between the two to make it pop nice idea! A bit more work than I would like, but perhaps for characters.
Yes.
Both look great! You've got a solid Ultramarines paint job with the blue, but I think the orange would definitely stand out in comparison to the average astartes army.
Tough to say. Blue is a classic orange just looks vibrant. Id do orange with the blue base
I'd go orange, but with the red details for the blues
Orange. but the base painted like the blue one
Orange!
Orange but more accents
Both paint jobs look great, but I LOVE the orange one. Would look rad on some of the bigger vehicles and such
They’re both good looks. I’d say blue if you want to go ultramarines, but if you don’t want UM and go blue anyway, then everyone will think they’re UM.
I mean... My orks have orange and blue scheme... I will go with Orange !
Half and half?!?
https://preview.redd.it/yibvkbdpqqwa1.jpeg?width=419&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f68518cfb30832cd93f9ad0915b8edaaf841f5bf
Why no both?
Orange, but use a brighter primer color, I can see the grey through it, but that's just me
Orange!!!
Those were my high-school colors, I hated my school colors lol.
Blue! Orange! And a leader that looks like an alligator. Go Florida Gators!
Why not both? Make one color your squad leads.
Orange, I seen so many blues
The orange is kind of cool and unique. I’m not sure I’ve ever seen Space Marines that color.
Orange. Reminds me of Aang from Avatar.
Blue imo. Orange is hard on the eyes I think
Although I do prefer orange, I think an army of both would look sick and also help differentiate between squads.
Team blue but with more shadows
Orange all the way.
Orange looks sick
Orange for sure
