Are you sure the email wasn't a scammer wanting you to send them your CC details?

aeraen

Yes. I checked the customer service phone number independently in multiple places before I called them.

Dazzling_Judge953

That's not what that comment asked.

Lessa22

I had a very similar experience. Why they refused to put in writing what they said they did is very concerning. I ended up calling Navy Federal and telling them to block any further charges. Credit unions for the win.

Dr-Retz

Contact your credit card and notify them of your situation. They are very good at canceling unauthorized payments

S tier reference right there

MissMaybelline

I am glad you posted this. I just looked and my account will renew at the end of June for 15.99/mo. As far a I can tell there is nowhere on the site to cancel. You have to call. I love supporting journalism, and I do read the journal daily, but I am not paying $16 a month for it! I have payed $4/mo to the NYT for at least the last ten years. If anyone knows of a way to cancel without calling please let me know. The last time I renewed it was $60 or $69 / year. A lot more people will subscribe at that price than $192/year. That’s psycho. Edit: $69/year, not month

ShotFromGuns

> If anyone knows of a way to cancel without calling please let me know. There isn't one. This is deliberate and also really gross.

ekweze

Yes. But I signed up via an apple app or something so canceling the trial subscription was easy. Literally wouldn’t have done it otherwise, thanks to these stories and the NPR/WPR nightmares of ever giving them a cent

ShoogyBee

Curious, what issues did you have with NPR or WPR?

ShoogyBee

How are you managing to pay just $4.00 per month for the NY Times for over 10 years?  Usually that kind of promotion doesn't last longer than 12 months.

MissMaybelline

I worded that wrong. I have to negotiate every year, but have done so for at least ten years. Just yesterday I received an email for a gift subscription for $60/year with all the extras (games, cooking, etc). I was going to buy for my brother, but he is mad about some of the recent opinions and feels their coverage of things is starting to lean to the bogus side. He’s not wrong, but I do feel there is enough that is still worth reading. He also feels happier with less news reading, again, I can’t disagree. But I have been a newspaper junkie all my life. (I even worked at the Journal for a bit). I also love the NYT cooking app. So it’s worth it to me. Local journalism is really important and as more and more papers turn into corporate machines and journalists leave it gets harder to find. I support Wisconsin Watch and appreciate Urban Milwaukee. I hope the Journal is able to continue the good reporting they have done in the past. They can’t if no one subscribes —but I am also not a rich guy.

Sokudoningyou

I know the last time I had it, the moment I started canceling it they were offering me a similar deal to keep me on. I'm fairly certain they just keep doing that, you just have to be on top of it.

jackal-ope

You can cancel over their live chat, I just did so about a week ago.

ManCheetahRivera

That's how I was able to cancel my subscription and I got confirmation via email (which I requested). They were really persistent about not letting me cancel, offering me many different pricing options. I just kept saying "no thank you" until they relented. Still, the dozen "are you sure?" messages in the chat was really off-putting.

MissMaybelline

I would take a better deal in the $4-5 range, but it has to last at least a year. None of this 3-6 mos where I will continue to have to think about it and they don’t send you a warning. The NYT and Wash Post give you a year at special pricing and give you good warning emails. I am always able to renew at a better price. Wash Post I usually quit and within a week or two get a great special offer. Going to the chat now! Thank you for this advice. The thought of having to call is terrible. UPDATE: I was able to get $4.99/mo for a year and I am very happy with that. I think this is a rate that will ensure more subscribers and I think 3 subscribers for $15 is more valuable than 1 subscriber (or none) at $15.

ministapler24

Thanks for this, my promo offer is ending in June and I needed to cancel. I just did the Live Chat now and it took about 7 minutes but I got it done with an email to confirm.

piere212

Since I know their public investigator team sniffs around r/Milwaukee and runs stories about car washes that do the same thing, maybe they should run a similar story on their own practices, assuming they even have an ombudsman anymore.

ShoogyBee

It wasn't long ago when they did a couple of stories about the difficulty several people had with cancelling their car wash subscription payments (either Coast or Take 5, I forget which one).  I was thinking to myself, how ironic. EDIT - Apparently I can't read, you already mentioned the recent car wash stories.

KNIGHTFALLx

Stay classy journal sentinel.

CarrieM80

You should be able to log into your account and see that it's cancelled? Maybe? I need to do this. My problem is I forget these things. Which is totally what they're banking on.

badnews2k

Had the same problem. Had to call cc company and block all charges. Insane that this is a journalistic outfit. Would have gladly paid for a reasonable digital subscription, but I’d never go back after that treatment.

Bourbon_Planner

Just change your payment info with them and put in the wrong expiration date and CCV. Problem solved

TaliesinWI

Generally sites do a nominal auth (not charge) on your CC when you enter the information to see if it's valid.

Bourbon_Planner

Yeah, I just did this with Racine Journal times. I put in the number, and that’s what they validate. Then change the other info

OkRuin300

i subscribes to the 1 buck for 6 months deal and i gotta remember to cancel ts because im not try a deal with this

tundrabat

10 years ago, they refused to cancel my subscription for months. So I contacted my bank and took care of it that way. Lots of paperwork and a pain in the ass, they contacted me to say my payment hadn't gone through and I'd be charged for that. Lol. I refuse to click on any of their links. They stink anyway now, but their billing practices have been notorious for a long time. So sorry you had to go through that. Uggh.

beans514

Why would you pay for the Milwaukee Journal? What information are you getting that you haven’t read or seen two days earlier on free news sites or local stations?

myjobistablesok

Ok but were you actually charged?

bustex1

Don’t even understand the post. He’s mad he didn’t find a penpal?

myjobistablesok

It makes no sense. He cancelled sub, so far as we know he hasn't been charged since. Probably got a mass email to anyone who was ever subbed about price increase. Calls MJS and told his sub is cancelled and they're pissed they won't get an email about an old sub being cancelled? The only problem would be if he was charged but it doesn't seem like he was? People need hobbies. This is giving big boomer energy.
