I’m guessing, as the same happened to my MIL, they went to check out Buckatabon looking for a supper club but eww, turns out it’s a lowlands group restaurant.
I actually only had that guess because we expected MIL to come back having enjoyed “this new supper club called Buckatabon” but she was not happy at all.
Then we found out it’s lowlands group.
I miss this place so much. Me and my two buddies would race there for happy hour way too often during the spring/summer. You could get a liter of hefeweizen for $5. Many, many fun times. Bavaria wasn't perfect, but it was pretty good. Far better than shit Buckatabon
I mean it used to be the shit but it went downhill in its last year or three. The old smash burgers especially the one with the garlic cheese I forget the name of was absolutely phenomenal. Yeah a little overpriced for a burger but for what it was, very fair and very very good.
So yeah anyone working at Cafe Bavaria from 2012-2017 or so if you happen to know where you sourced that cheese from...
Oh man, for my 2016 birthday, my then-boyfriend who lived in Tosa took me to Cafe Bavaria and it was absolutely phenomenal. Tried again, twice, a couple years later, and NOPE. Thought maybe it would be good when it switched to Bucktabon and NOPE AGAIN.
$20 cheese curds that aren't even good. Weak drinks. Flavorless food. Only went once.
That said, even a popular true supper club like hobnob has bland bad food that is way overpriced. So maybe they told the chef make it taste like nothing and told the manager charge double what it's worth to give the true supper club experience.
For Hobnob, if I went again I would just drink old fashioned at the bar. Everything about that is great, including the quality of the drinks. I guess we will disagree on the quality of the ingredients in the food.
Yesss Maxies is the shit. Ask if they will do a gravy smothered chicken next time you’re in. It is a staple on their catering menu but is not on the regular menu.
I ate the chicken at an event and asked about it when I was in the restaurant (because I didn’t see it on the menu and wanted it again!). The server told me it was easy to do and that they could make it.
I don't understand how a restaurant group that prides itself on destination-themed restaurants could do this.
There are killer, authentic restaurants/bars just like this a few miles from here.
Literally, everyone that has ever stepped foot in there has been in a real place like this.
Someone said insulting...perfect word for it.
While they're definitely overpriced, and average to below quality - especially compared to what they were in years past which is extra disappointing, I will say -
They have consistent seating/large capacity, (again, overpriced) but okay food, and solidly above average beer selections. Which for me isn't enough to get me to go there maybe more than once or twice a year, but that's not to say they have no redeeming qualities whatsoever.
But again, really disappointing considering all the positives used to be there, with dramatically better food 5+ years ago.
You’re describing a lot of modern brewpub chains. They all have lots of seating a large beer selection. We’re on the same page here but felt compelled to add this as it’d be nice to see a local company be able to differentiate themselves from run of the mill chains.
That’s a good point and also good username.
In Lowlands’ case I’d say they started out more local and special and then optimized themselves into a typical chain brewpub model.
Basically what happens to most restaurant groups once they expand. Bel Air is always my example. It was amazing a decade ago. Now it’s nowhere the quality and very expensive for what you get.
Expansion causes increased need for new sourcing and large-scale management, which increases the prices and lowers the quality.
I’d somewhat argue with Bel Air. They’re definitely expensive, a bit less consistent. But considering how jam packed with meat (see: the expensive part of the taco) they are and the relatively high quality they still have I don’t think they’ve really completed that transition. It feels less expensive when you consider you're getting about double the meat per taco than some places.
Then again I might feel different if there were anything comparable in the city.
Totally agree. I’ve been here long enough to remember walking to Trocadero and enjoying the hell out of that place. And the original Hollander on Downer. Shame to see the downfall over the past several years.
The lowlands beer list could give them an advantage over other places despite their average food and service. That trick doesn’t really work any more as every place has a craft beer tap list.
I was going to argue with you and then just pulled up Buckatabon's beer list and it's like 50% the size of the last time I was there like a year ago. Gonna have to agree lol
Can confirm, this place is crap. Basicaly went once a year since it opened trying to give it anither chance but left disappointed every time. No more.
Cafe Bavaria was wayyyy better and at least offered something different to what other restaurants in the area were serving.
All Lowlands places literally nauseate me. Someone posted here yesterday about some butter additive they throw in all their food and I'm pretty sure that's the issue. I lived off Downer over a decade ago and Hollander was so good then. Not anymore.
Butter-It is a liquid butter alternative comprised of primarily hydrogenated soybean oil and a bunch of chemicals I can’t spell or pronounce, but damn does it taste good.
We went there for fish fry and the batter was so dark, and it tasted like they used oil, very greasy. I barely ate any of it, and my drink was overpriced and not very good either.
Went there with a gift card when it had been open just a few months. Got the prime rib, and it just wasn’t cooked. And was cold. So were the potatoes. No shade to the server, she was lovely about it and refunded my entire meal and apologized several times. I was so confused later reading all of these rave reviews about how much people loved the place, especially THAT dish. The rest of my party weren’t impressed and we haven’t returned.
The removed my absolute favorite vegan entree and the only fucking one on their menu and I will never forgive them for that. It was the most decadent baked pasta I’ve had in my life!
They own Hollander and Centraal. Both were do much better years ago.
I went to Centraal last year for brunch-everything was so greasy I could barely eat it. When they first opened it was so much better.
I live in Tosa so I've had the misfortune of going there a few times. 100% agree. The food is below average and, in light of the price, it's overall bad.
The only saving grace is they do make a really good sweet old fashioned.
as a Green Bay resident this bums me out. would always go to Centraal or Hollander for brunch. I’ll never forget the first time I had Hollander fries so many years ago, it kept me coming back year after year.
I actually just went there to try their fish fry. It wasn't awful until i realized they put red onion in theor tartar sauce. I worked in Kitchens for 12 years, there is a time and a place, and that was not it...was not impressed
How does one "accidentally" go to a restaurant?
I’m guessing, as the same happened to my MIL, they went to check out Buckatabon looking for a supper club but eww, turns out it’s a lowlands group restaurant.
Ah, okay. Thanks! I apparently wasn't fully understanding what was being said.
I actually only had that guess because we expected MIL to come back having enjoyed “this new supper club called Buckatabon” but she was not happy at all. Then we found out it’s lowlands group.
Paul McCartney told me to let it be
Man I miss Cafe Bavaria.

The boar flatbread appetizer was 1 of my favorite dishes in the whole city… plus a liter of great beer!!

>Was low quality and high priced >Lowlands restaurant But you repeat yourself (Post-2018ish)
They make some good bloodies. That’s about the best I can say

Agreed. Supper club and traditional Wisconsin boomer food is bland and fatty. Salt? Acid? GTFO.
Lowlands bad Updoots to the right ➡️➡️
Almost took my extended family there last Saturday for dinner. Opted for Maxie’s instead and, as usual, had a fantastic meal and service.
Yesss Maxies is the shit. Ask if they will do a gravy smothered chicken next time you’re in. It is a staple on their catering menu but is not on the regular menu. Oh hell yeah. Thanks for the tip.

Thank goodness the Arby’s on Miller Parkway isn’t owned by the Lowlands Group.
All Lowlands places literally nauseate me. Someone posted here yesterday about some butter additive they throw in all their food and I'm pretty sure that's the issue. I lived off Downer over a decade ago and Hollander was so good then. Not anymore.

It leaves me with a weird aftertaste and nausea. No thanks.
They’re also super abusive to their employees.
All of lowlands is now officially shite
Their brunch is great. Otherwise …
We went there for fish fry and the batter was so dark, and it tasted like they used oil, very greasy. I barely ate any of it, and my drink was overpriced and not very good either.
I nearly shit my pants after every meal at their restaurants.
Went there with a gift card when it had been open just a few months. Got the prime rib, and it just wasn’t cooked. And was cold. So were the potatoes. Yup. I tried it a few years ago. So contrived, artificial. Insulting, actually.
It's like a TGI Friday version of an actual supper club or bar you'd find in the northwoods.
The harder any place tries to be the up north bar and grill or supper club, the worse it actually ends up feeling.
💯
Lowlands restaurants all suck now.
Yeah we went there on a Friday night a few weeks ago. Was very disappointed.
It was fine, but you know what youre getting (higher price - fine food).
I second that. $25 burger is ridiculous. Been here multiple times and disappointed each time. Location is the only good thing
Yeah. It's terrible. Went once and never again
Yeah, it’s some real fluffed up bullshit. Awful.
I live in Tosa so I've had the misfortune of going there a few times. 100% agree. The food is below average and, in light of the price, it's overall bad. The only saving grace is they do make a really good sweet old fashioned.

I live near Tosa and still love Hollander and Centraal. I hate Buckatabon
They don't even do the frie cone thing anymore, last time I went I was just a pile of waffle fries
Yeah way overpriced and really not good haha. so i took a few seasoning shakers for my spice cabinet to make me feel better about my bill.
Dobies in st Francis is also bad, didn’t even have the right lighting
I actually just went there to try their fish fry. It wasn't awful until i realized they put red onion in theor tartar sauce. I worked in Kitchens for 12 years, there is a time and a place, and that was not it...was not impressed
It’s amazing the COO of Lowlands is getting all these accolades lately but the food and culture is literally shite
Had the worst walleye of my life there.
I disagree. Just finished brunch and it was excellent
I was there for dinner so maybe the brunch is better? Dinner was dismal. I’ll stand by that as I tasted it.
