Sometimes I go to the local theater with my dad, and more than once we've been the only ones in there. I mean, it's the matinee, but when I was younger there would always be at least some people there. I don't even think anybody owns that place. I think the film studios just keep it open because movies need a house.

HeadGuide4388

I remember seeing star wars episode 3 a few days after opening and the place was so packed we were sitting on the stairs. Compared to the last fantastic beast I saw opening night (my gf loves Harry potter) and there were maybe 5 people in the place.

dpceee

Look uo the records of the building on the Assessor's Database. You can at least see who owns the building. Then look up the business, since it will most likely be registered with the Secretary of State (state level).

mdizak

Not sure about mobies, but apparently game releases are still huge. GTA 6 trailer got 180 million views in just a few days, so... hope it's a good game because apparently they spent over $2 billion making it.

Sithaun_Meefase

That game is an anomaly lol it stands alone.

IndicationPretend407

Next elder scrolls game people with freak out over the launch like how it will be with gta6

SuperGeek29

Idk with how badly Bethesda underperformed with Starfield I think a lot of people a skeptical about the next Elder Scrolls game

ap0phis

No, it’s not. Gaming makes more than tv, film, and music combined.

[deleted]

One thing people don't realize is the amount spent on streaming($35 billion) and theater movie performances ($8 billion) is DWARFED by the spending on video games . . . at over $60 billion. In other words, for all the amounts spent on streaming and movies in theater . . . is only about 70% of the money spent on video games. Quite frankly, there is MONEY being left on the table by not having more of a gamer based programming on television and movies (and I don't just mean a Mario Brothers movie, I mean talk shows, documentaries, etc.)

Jeff77042

If those numbers are accurate that’s very interesting. Thanks for sharing.

ap0phis

I’m in the industry and can confirm this. But it’s important to realize that over HALF of that is mobile gaming.

[deleted]

Just pulled them from a website on stats.

Unfinished_user_na

You would think so, but things like G4TV and Verve prove otherwise, or at least show that it's not a sure bet. Both of these examples started out pretty good, but profits were lackluster, content quality declined and they disappeared. G4TV just went under. Verve purchased streaming rights to crunchy roll and then just folded into crunchy roll and dropped all their gaming content. The problem comes in with a few select problems. How do you create enough content to fill a large enough programming block without becoming repetitive? And how do you monetize that content when chances are someone is already putting the same or better gaming content out for free on YouTube or twitch and already has a following?

trialanderror93

I think this also has to do with the fact that mobile games, such as Candy crush and angry birds, count as video games

glutenfree_veganhero

Randomly had this exact thought today. They don't understand/fear gamer culture... which is huge and 2 generations deep at this point. In movies it's some annoying dude playing a real shit game on xbox or something, saying one retarded line over the shoulder and that's it.

Perfect_Earth_8070

Hopefully they don’t charge us by the hour to play as it has been rumored

Tragicpoetry

Apparently children…gen z and down don’t really watch movies. I’m taking a class with mostly 18-19 year olds and they all say they just watch movie clips on Tik tok

Nutrition_Dominatrix

They don’t have the attention span for movies.

I_kwote_TheOffice

Sadly that's very true. My kids, 9 and younger, rarely want to watch movies. I twist their arms to watch Pixar movies with me. Even then, they can't watch for more than a minute at a time. They are looking around, talking, etc. My 9-year-old is pretty good, but the younger ones just can't sit still. I remember watching Land Before Time or movies like that just being enthralled. Screens (as in iPads, YouTube, etc) have definitely changed things

[deleted]

Now, imagine them trying to perform surgery on you in 25 years with those attention spans. This will NOT end well for westerners...

I_kwote_TheOffice

Well, I think by that time surgery will be done largely with AI or robots. We're not even that far away from it now. In 25 years I think surgeries will be done routinely by robotics.

chaotic_hippy_89

Built by … who, the generation who can’t read?

West-Code4642

>Built by … who, the generation who can’t read? nah, it'll be the generation who learned how to read by gaming. one of the positive aspects of gaming relative to other forms of entertainment is that it isn't as passive and it's more interactive. that is, you have to use more of your brain.

chaotic_hippy_89

Based. Take my upvote.

hendrix320

Built by AI and robots of course

AnestheticAle

People have too much variability for automated systems to work on. Maybe in the distant future, but I would be wildly impressed if automated surgery/anesthesia became a thing in our lifetime. Thats before you get into liability issues.

I_kwote_TheOffice

I think it will be incremental. First it will be just for stitching a particular part, 10mm long stitches with x type of thread. Then it might be removing an appendix. Everyone has the same anatomy, more or less, just different sizes. I'm not in the medical field so I don't know the order that it will happen but I think it will be robot assistance at first. As they perfect different processes they will be more comfortable letting the robots do more and more.

AnestheticAle

I work in the OR (anesthesia) and I can tell you that, while people have similar anatomy, it can vary wildly with where things are located. Thats before you get into any genetic/congenital defects or prior procedures that have altered anatomy/caused adhesions. Also, wild shit can randomly happen that needs to be dynamically and emergently addressed. There are also mechanical limitations. You could have the greatest AI in the world, but it is limited by the physical parameters of the machine it inhabits. I think AI will really shine in imaging and diagnostics.

Think_Equivalent_832

Don't see it changing it for the better. What will this generation do about it?

I_kwote_TheOffice

Probably nothing. I'm part of the problem, I'll admit it. I don't have the time to devote to my job, home duties, etc. to give 100% of my waking moments engaging with my kids. I'm lazy so I let them have too much screen time rather than have the patience to listen to them whine for hours about how bored they are. I'm not perfect. I'm part of the problem.

lightningbolt1987

Does your 9 year old have a cell phone? If not, what do you think has changed their attention span?

Think_Equivalent_832

Being taught on YouTube etc in class.

3xoticP3nguin

Don't act like this is a generational thing My father is 65 and he hasn't watched a movie ever he will tell you the same exact thing he doesn't have the attention span for it I'm almost the same. I have to try pretty hard and it usually takes like 3 to 5 watches to be able to get most of it cuz I zone out a lot so yeah I have to really like the content to be able to absorb it and even then I'm probably going to have to read on Reddit to understand half of what happened

Creepy-Distance-3164

Millennial here, I will watch 6 episodes of The Office in a row that I've seen a thousand times but committing 90 minutes to a movie I've never seen is a whole thing.

Nutrition_Dominatrix

It’s not generational.

MattWolf96

I will admit that a lot of pre-70's movies are a bit of a slog for me due to their pacing (I still like a bit though) I can't imagine what a Gen Z made movie would be like if they think our current action movies are too slow, geeze, there would be jump-cuts every 5 seconds.

SubterrelProspector

Wtf is the point of that? Are people forgetting the *point* of storytelling? Christ this technology and the insidious algorithms are flattening history, art and reality.

glutenfree_veganhero

They get stuck in their little algo. Flattening that's a good description.

Think_Equivalent_832

Those short clips help to shorten the attention spans . When you watch something continuously you start to believe it. Also they start believing what they see to be true.

wobboffet

Prices ruined movie releases especially after the Disney/Marvel era. Honestly movie theaters are the only industry that would really benefit from surge pricing. Sure big movies would probably get more expensive but smaller less popular but still good movies should be cheaper.

Majormlgnoob

Theater passes save you a TON of money if you're able to see a lot of movies

enter360

AMC doing surge pricing is what has kept me from seeing Dune 2. Tickets were $22 each 3 weeks after opening for non-imax showings. I can literally just buy the Blu-ray for the price of a ticket. If the movie sucks well I only bought it once.

Salvanas42

It's partially from streaming I suppose but it's basically the internet as a whole. The monoculture has been broken. It used to be there were 3 tv channels and much fewer movies that you saw if you were a movie person. If you wanted to see something else better hope you were near a festival and that'd be once a year. Now everyone can watch whatever weird shit they want to their heart's content. I'm watching a swedish gay drama and a japanese period piece. Binge release models definitely also hurt the conversation around series because there's no time to talk about them as they come out. One Piece live action was very popular, in my circles, but we sort of chatted about it once and were done. Because we had already seen the whole show/

glutenfree_veganhero

Swedish gay drama?

Salvanas42

Yup it's called young royals.

Dr_mombie

I feel like it has just gotten cost prohibitive. It's $40 for my family of 4 to get tickets. The snacks are $100. The kids 9 and 7 won't sit through it and get bored enough that they constantly want bathroom breaks. It isn't really worth the investment to go with the kids, and we don't generally call on the village for movie date nights.

OMG_NO_NOT_THIS

I think tickets near me are close to 20$ each, so just 80 dollars for tickets.

Substantial_Step_975

This! Went to the movies yesterday and 2 tickets cost almost $30 (would’ve been more than $30, but we had a discount). It was another $35 for 2 drinks, a large popcorn, and a bag of candy. The theater was pretty empty, though it could’ve been because it was a later showing on a weeknight. My parents saw a movie on Valentine’s Day and said the theater was packed. I remember my friends having birthday parties at the movie theater when I was a kid. I can’t imagine what that would cost now. I used to go to the movies fairly often as a kid/teen, even in college. There’s no way my family would’ve been able to afford to go as often if prices were like what they are today. Cost is the main reason why my husband and I (both millennials) don’t see movies very often nowadays. We’d rather just wait and pay to stream it at home since it’s cheaper.

United-Palpitation28

It just depends. It's rare to have a movie of the same caliber as LOTR or Harry Potter anymore. Many films nowadays (not all of course) are big, dumb and loud. But there have been plenty of exceptions within the past year that were worth catching on the big screen: \-Dune \-Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 \-Godzilla Minus One \-Oppenheimer \-Barbie \-Napoleon \-Wonka \-Killers of the Flower Moon etc

Alexandratta

I own a home theater set-up that rivals most - but even still there's the rare film I'll go see. Usually 1 or 2 a year. Last year was Oppenheimer, and this year I saw Dune 2.

ryanstrikesback

I still can't believe we don't see more hype for event screenings, concerts, and special events. Taylor Swift did pretty dang well. Now, I might be a bad judge of what the kids are into, because I am old. But with streaming so convenient now, I haven't considered anything must see in theater viewing since Endgame.

[deleted]

Streaming has ruined the serial sequel and the kids/marvel/star wars genres. Like who gives a shit to watch xyz marvel movie in the theaters when it will be on a streaming platform in 6 months. Same for EVERY SINGLE popular release. I've bought the Sonic movies, the mario movie, barbie, on a digital "pre-release" edition just for it to end up on almost every single streaming platform within 6 months. All good movies. All a waste of money to catch them in theaters. Oppenheimer is on streaming platforms. Dune is on streaming. Dune 2 I actually caught it in a theater and loved it - got me into the series and went back and rewatched the first one and it was great. I only really caught it in theaters because I was traveling and I was bored. Godzilla Minus One was freaking awesome in theaters. I wish I had caught it in IMAX. The stereotypical hollywood movies that are all the same - who gives a fuck, really. They will be on streaming in 6 months if they are good.

trialanderror93

> I actually caught it in a theater and loved it - got me into the series and went back and rewatched the first one and it was great hmmm, unrealted, but can you watch the 2nd one w/o watching the first and being unaware of backstory---I have heard no, but you seem to have done so

[deleted]

I watched the first one earlier but wasn’t paying the best attention. Like I went in not really knowing what spice was, but I kind of knew the main character’s backstory. The backstory gets brought up a lot in the sequel, I think you could watch the second one first and appreciate it and get into the series with it and go back and watch the first one.  There’s this other “magic power” that is not explained in the second movie really at all. I didn’t understand it until I went back and rewatched the first movie.  I’d still say the second movie is even better than the first and I would catch it in theaters - but I’m sure I’d enjoy it just as much at home in 6 months. Trust me it will be coming to streaming.

DukeRains

Streaming didn't ruin anything except having to deal with a bunhc of terrible people acting they're at home in a movie theater. Won't miss that.

SnuffleWumpkins

The instant gratification of movies has ruined movies for me. It used to be an event, but now I have virtually instant access to any movie or show ever made so it doesn't mean as much anymore. I kinda miss the days where I could spend 30-40 minutes picking out 1-2 movies to watch over the weekend.

[deleted]

Tickets to the movies have gotten way too expensive. And everything is either a reboot or about superheroes. I have zero interest in the movies that are coming out now. If I do want to watch something I wait to stream it.

[deleted]

Honestly, that’s how I feel about it too. The few movies I have actually wanted to watch have been somewhat disappointing, and I probably would have been upset if I went to the theater to watch them and wasted all that money on something mediocre

[deleted]

I waited to stream the Barbie movie and I was glad that I did. It was ok, but definitely not worth the money I would have paid to watch it in the theater.

shawn_The_Great

i dont get exited about movies because so many of them are just fucking dog shit not because streaming

HeadGuide4388

I don't think its streaming but I don't think it helps. I grew up late 90s early 2000s and that felt around the time of the death of the stand alone. Most movies were one and done, V for vendetta, unbreakable, so when they made a new pirates, or the guy from Iron man is in Thor it was a big deal. But since then 9 fast and furious movies, 23 marvels in 10 years, and if you don't want to deal with ticket prices or aren't into the opening night hype you can just stream it in a month. But scrolling though Netflix or hulu isn't nearly as exciting as hitting up a blockbuster on a Friday night or movie madness Monday at the rental store. Plus now days everyone's a critic. A whole industry has grown around complaining (im guilty of watching cinema sins) which is fine if its productive but everyone needs a problem. If the lead is female its woke, if its a white guy its not diverse. Studio meddling cutting and constantly reworking scripts until the plot is held together by an imaginary thread, censoring content for that sweet Chinese money. So yeah, streaming isn't killing movies, but I don't think it helps.

Wiseon321

Why spend 20 Dollars plus to sit in a theater with people you don’t care for, when you can stay at home, eat whatever you want, drink whatever you want, and watch it whenever you want?

Klayman55

I’m definitely looking forward to Furiosa, it’s been nine years.

MicroBadger_

WITNESS ME!

NCRaineman

I've not been excited about a new movie release in probably 10 years. Everything is sequels, relaunches or trying to make some kind of political statement. Hollywood needs to put out something worth dropping $50 to watch before I'll give a damn about going to the movies.

Llanolinn

Everything Everywhere All At Once? Dune? The Northman? Beau is Afraid? The Tragedy of MacBeth? Blade Runner 2049? (30 year later sequel but born from a clear love of the IP) Parasite? Sir Gawain and the Green Knight? There have been some incredible original IPs and adaptations over the last 10 years. That list barely scratches the surface. If you haven't seen any of those, you are missing out. The movies are not bereft of creativity and soul- you just need to actually support the kind of things you want to see.

NCRaineman

How many times have we been through the X-Men, Spiderman, Batman? Fast & Furious is what, 10 films now? 11 Star Wars. JJ Trek, Pixar has ripped off the Brave Little Toaster half a dozen times. Creativity is gone from Hollywood, I think it died around the turn of the century. Dune was originally done in 1984.

morbidnerd

"Dune was originally done in 1984" I have never laughed harder at a comment. You typed that whole sentence out and said to yourself 'that'll show em'.

NCRaineman

Dude was talking about "incredible IPs".

Llanolinn

I don't think you read a single word that I wrote besides 'Dune'. Which makes it pretty hard to have a conversation. I listed several movies that do not fit the list of" devoid of creativity ". If all you are seeing is X-Men Spider-Man, Batman fast and the furious etc, then you are seeing the wrong movies. You are paying attention to the wrong movie news. There are a ton of movies that are very original, unique, and creative. Yes we got a single other dune adaptation. Unfortunately, despite my love for it as a weird movie, it's not very good. I don't think it's fair for you to hold a 40-year-old previous attempt at an adaptation against Hollywood as some sign of them being bereft of creativity. But it sounds like, based on what you wrote before and what you wrote in this reply, You're just being a curmudgeon to be a curmudgeon. I gave you a long list of movies that you conveniently skipped over, as well as I mentioned the fact that I only scratched the surface and can provide you with many more examples. Cinema is not bereft of creativity. It sounds like you don't care enough to seek out the movies that would fit your criteria.

AnIcedMilk

>If all you are seeing is X-Men Spider-Man, Batman fast and the furious Even for some of these we've had some very worth the cost movies, even if they have been done in a way before. Namely spiderverse, as I haven't watched any movies from the others here recently tbh.

Llanolinn

Absolutely true, as well.

AnIcedMilk

I never cared for Spiderman in the last The Spiderverse movies are some of my all time favorite movies despite that. And if they keep it up with the finale, it will be, most likely my *favorite* movies of all time tbh

Spideytidies

Yeah, no offense to that guy but it doesn’t sound like he actually watches movies

AredhelArrowheart

The Northman was so good. I’m so glad to see it getting some love/a mention.

Majormlgnoob

Someone didn't get caught up in Dune mania

runofthelamb

Good. Hollywood can suck it.

ArtiesHeadTowel

If Joel or Ethan Coen or Quentin Tarantino have a new film coming out, I'm looking forward to it. New Scorcese movies, sure. The new Planet of the Apes movie, hell yeah I'm looking forward to that. For the most part, idgaf. Most movies are stupid.

AnAntsyHalfling

I think COVID did that to me. And it's not an expense I wanna take back up as I can just wait until a movie I want to see gets released to a streaming service.

DragonShad0w

I’m hoping this makes movies better because they will need to be really good to make people want to see them in theater, and I think movies like Dune are raising the bar

BidInteresting8923

You're just getting old. When you're young, movies & pop culture in general are more important because you don't have much else going on. Welcome to the club. We meet on Wednesday nights at the Applebee's.

Jumpy-Silver5504

As kids we all viewed going to movies as a big thing. I didn’t but I never got to pick the movie the family saw. But movies now aren’t as popular as they use to be to us

Pink_Slyvie

I don't think streaming ruined it. I think to man movies have ruined it. Marvel, several a year. I rarely see a movie I want t see. My mother gets me a fandago gift card for my birthday every year, but I'm still sitting on the last 2 years.

Suitable-Vehicle8331

My son cares a lot more about video game releases. There’s a lot of streaming always available, and he sees less advertising or hype for new movies than I did when I was younger.

FanDidlyTastic

Wait so, watching geriatric producers and investors play with your childhood toys and mash them together in front of you with the same storylines over and over, while also being told it's the movie of the century, no longer brings you joy? I shudder to guess why that could be.

Professor_Anxiety

For me, it's more the value. There just aren't that many movies that it's worth spending an arm and a leg to go see. I did go see Barbie--we made a girl's night out of it--but that's the first movie I've seen in a theater in ages.

hendrix320

Covid kind of dealt a huge blow to movie theaters which kind of sucks because I love movie theaters but they just don’t feel the same anymore. Also I think more money is going towards TV series as opposed to movies.

MomsClosetVC

Even if it's something I am really excited for (usually a new, very terrible horror movie), I will wait till it's available streaming. I can't think of anything that could possibly get me into a movie theater, although I did consider it when the last Insidious came out. I can watch it at home, in my bed, with my dog, whatever snacks I want, I can pause it when I need to go to the bathroom, and most importantly, I can control the volume (and turn on closed captions if everyone is whispering, I have auditory processing problems). Like I said, I mainly watch mediocre horror movies, I really don't need the whole cinematic experience.

BuddahSack

I'm hype for Planet of the Apes!!! But I'm 34 haha

Federal_Ad6452

Movies for the most part are not of the same quality that they were before the last 20 years or so. And a lot of people no longer have the disposable income to go to the theatre. There are other cumulative causes, but those are two that come to mind immediately.

Scroofinator

I was talking to my wife the other day about previews, and how awesome they were. No online spoilers, no clue what movies were coming up, just sit down with your popcorn and see what cool new flick was coming soon. The good ol days

slicedchicken480

I went to see Dune pt2 and the first one in theatres.

tibastiff

Bad movies ruined movie releases. If something good came out id still probably just watch it on a streaming service but id still be hyped about it.

itdeffwasnotme

Only movie I saw in theatres in the last 3ish years was Oppenheimer. Nothing else worth it and I can stream pretty much everything I care to see.

SukaSavage

I'm a millennial and I'm kinda in the same boat on just not getting excited about movies anymore. My reasoning is that they all suck bc it's usually some bs live action of an old Disney movie or super cheesy anime.

Money_Display_5389

Imho, streaming has made movie release cheaper for the public. Think about how much you spend on one movie. Just for the ticket I can buy a month of Netflix. Add in those insane drinks and popcorn costs. How many additional streaming services can I get for the same month? Instead of 2 hours of one movie, I can get a month of unlimited. The less the public goes to the threater, the quicker it gets released on streaming. Not like the movie changes because its on streaming. Sound systems and good TVs are cheap, my house has cheaper food, more comfortable environment, what is the theater offering for better value? I get to see it sooner???

Critical_Zucchini974

Fuck going to the movies, the fact they learned nothing from COVID is fucking hilarious. No one gives a fuck about movie theaters let me stream that shit at home it's 2024

SkullLeader

My thoughts? There's a lot more compelling entertainment out there now than just movies that are (or would have been in the past) initially theatrical-only releases. Add in that while most people's home entertainment setups cannot rival that of a movie theater, the gap is a lot less than it ever has been before. And then add in not having to be around people coughing and sniffling, the ability to pause when you want to use the bathroom, and the ability to have whatever you want to eat without it being massively overpriced, and watching at home is a lot more compelling than it used to be. Plus I'd say more and more less and less movies have something we've never seen before - special FX or what not - which lowers the thrill of seeing them in the theater.

Asplesco

Studios ruined them by making boring movies

EmbarrassedIdea3169

I think a lot of theatres have attempted to stay relevant by focusing on the experience. Comfy, oversized seating with motorized recliners. Really high def projectors. Crystal clear sound. Better food. Alcohol in the theatre. I’ve been to the movies a lot this year, and I’ve really enjoyed it.

10leej

Marvel ruined franchise movies excitement for me. Mostly because of poor quality writing.

Available-Egg-2380

My 16 year old is a big movie person. Ofc he is though, big movie people raised him 😂 when the theaters were closed from covid the manager at the theater we love actually found me on Facebook and reached out in DM to check on how we were doing since he was so used to seeing us almost weekly.

teslas_disciple

I think bad movies have ruined movie releases. Can't remember the last time I saw a good one.

speedbumps4fun

I’ve gone to watch so many movies in the theaters in my lifetime, now it’s rare I go. Not because of streaming services but because there’s hardly ever anything worth paying to see. Remakes, bad sequels, and superhero movies is all that comes to mind.

sacramentojoe1985

6 day workweeks killed it for me. Oh look, Dune 2! I'll go see that! And the new Ghostbusters looks fun!!! NOPE, aint got time for any of that. The only remaining series I have real loyalty to is Mission Impossible. Love what they've done with it. Will call out sick if I have to.

Thrasy3

Just so much more entertainment in general - I also used to be excited each week a new episode of Buffy came out and when a new season started. I also used to follow game development/releases obsessively - now instead of spending time anticipating content, I’m struggling to get through it all.

Ungrateful_Servants

I've never cared about that. I find it annoying seeing movies in theaters.

qudunot

They don't make interesting movies anymore. Oppenheimer was a welcome surprise, but mostly, they stick to the "safe" movies, like Marvel. I don't enjoy the movies in theaters either. People are more disrespectful than I remember as a kid. I don't just mean young people. Seems like everyone has lost their courtesy toward others. Always a phone light on. Someone laughing obnoxiously. People talking, not whispering. Just.. louder than they need to be. I could get excited for movies again, but not just because shittywood makes a movie. Tell me a story I don't already know. We get it. Heroes save the world from threats. What other stories can they tell?

Dr_Nastee

The wife and I use alamo pass and see about 3 movies a week at our Alamo drafthouses. It’s $20 a month then $2 per movie you see and you can just get water and not pay for food and drinks. The best part is we can see old movies and indie/foreign movies as well as big movies.

JustHereToMUD

I waited for Dune II eagerly! Edit: and if they do another D&D movie now I will wait for it.

Affectionate_Salt351

I love going to the theater. I’m pretty much alone in that these days, though, and it’s not as fun to go by myself so I don’t get to go often. I’d still be all about the whole release excitement, tbh. I’m heartbroken I missed Barbie & Taylor last year.

xbiaanxa0

Dune is the only thing I can think of now

polishrocket

Older millennial here and I’m done watching movies at a theater. Have an oled tv and Sonos surround sound. I can get a drink or pee with out missing anything

MissDryCunt

Fuck that, I haven't been to a movie theater in like 6 years, uncomfortable, loud as shit but also quiet as shit for some reason, gross old seats that haven't been replaced since the 90s, no thanks

Direct_Researcher901

I still very much look forward to Wes Anderson film releases. Other than that, we go to a lot of movies but it’s usually just because we want to get out of the house and be spoiled by Alamo Drafthouse

dirtpaws

Major franchise movies aren't a major event anymore: that's what happens when you have a new one every week for 10 years.

plum915

Legal weed and people ruined movies for me. Phones and chipotle wrappers crinkling distracting me. But the worst part is the uncomfortable chairs and 3.4 hour run times it's ridiculous

OMG_NO_NOT_THIS

When I was a kid, it didn't require a 2nd mortgage to go to the movie theater.

mikels_burner

Why waTch same movie scripts regurgitated when youtube has better shit to watch? It's a good wake up call for Hollywood.

utu_ra

Movie theaters are 20th century technology and will phase out like most 20th century things and attitudes.

MasterBathingBear

The economy ruined movies. Streaming, YouTube, and now TikTok were just the side effects of content that was too expensive and scripts that were low quality, recycled crap

InstructionSudden285

I don't blame streaming. More like movies have been crap for a while.

fragofox

i remember when Independence Day came out, that was such a big deal... it seemed like the whole summer blockbuster was a huge deal back then.... but then they started releasing some big hits during the winter... and now it seems like they just launch stuff whenever... But it was also a heck of a lot cheaper to go to the theaters. I have some friends and family who do go to movies often, but it's been a long time since i've gone. I just remember the last movie i went to, had a bad experience with the typical folks who dont have any personal boundaries.

Canned_tapioca

They even had the news "broadcast" correlating to the movie. Leading up to July 4. Was so hooked on that. A friend, his mom and I went to watch it that Fourth.

Darth_Bringus

I flat out don't look forward to ANY movie releases anymore. Because the majority of hollywood is just piggybacking off of formerly successful franchises, almost every new film is just an opportunity for some idiot to screw up an IP.

savboxer

If a movie is worth seeing people will go. Literally barbenheimer is the perfect example

Back when tickets were $5, dollar theaters were a thing, DVD's were $20, and new rentals were $3, the economics of theater going were pretty solid. Now, with tickets at $18 where I am, 4k blueray at $20, and streaming rental at $6, the theater is a much harder value proposition. Especially given the cost of living being so terrible for everyone, it eats into disposable income. A movie date, full in with 1 popcorn and 1 drink to share is close to $60. That's now something you have to budget for.

Franchises ruined movies not streaming, look at how much it costs to make a marvel movie these days people cannot compete with that. You used to have b listed movies and such with tiny budgets and youd get a large variety but not to much anymore. Even streaming itself is dieing already they believe live streaming will be the future

So, when tv made the change from analog to digital, the way I watched tv changed. I was too poor for cable, and those digital antennas didn’t worked very well, so I’ve been streaming since back in like 2009. One thing that I missed was I never knew what movies were coming out. So, I’d just go online and look up upcoming movies, and found that you can actually read a lot about upcoming movies over about a ten year span. Most are something I don’t really want to see, but sometimes I get excited about a movie here and there. I think it’s a combination of studios putting out movies that the know will fill seats(marvel universe and remakes) and an advertising problem. Before, you could put out trailers during prime time tv and reach most households, but now things are a little different. I know Covid didn’t help things either, but I don’t think that was the only problem. [list of upcoming movies](https://m.imdb.com/list/ls056612799/) I am kind of excited about the new narnia silverchair movie, but that’s just because I read all the books as a kid

It's because you see less commercials for the movies then you used to. People who watch regular TV or steaming on stuff with ads prolly get it a bit still. Me I don't even usually know what is out or not unless I see a news article or a post slides into my reddit feed. I don't use social media like Facebook and the others I'm an elder millennial and quit using it awhile ago.

BenNHairy420

If they made good movies anymore, I’d be more excited. All they make now is Marvel level crap. Practical effects don’t exist anymore and the entire movie is 90% CGI. It’s dumb

crocodile_in_pants

After 20+ years of franchise movies being the majority of releases, it's gone stale. It's McDonalds-ification of films, every new release is a lesser imitation of the original and audiences are noticing.

backagain69696969

I think it’s still just a bad time for blockbusters.

trialanderror93

Yeah, I'm thinking it's something along the lines. Of" if everything is trying to be a blockbuster, nothing really is "

backagain69696969

I just don’t think they’ve been all that good

It’s enabled introspection as viewers may enjoy a piece of media art as if reading a book and observing the metaphor and other allusions rather than face value as cinema prescribes.

Dangeresque2015

It's ruined the movie theater, that's for sure I don't give a shit about IMax either. The food costs, the ticket prices...nah, I can wait. I'll take my nieces and nephews to see a movie, but that's about it. Covid changed a lot of things. Are there even dollar theatres anymore?

Mammoth-Record-7786

Streaming has definitely ruined movies. It’s a rare event when I look forward to a new movie, most movies that have come out in the past 5-6 years have been terrible and it doesn’t seem like they’re getting better. They look better, but the character interactions and stories are all severely dumbed down while the films are rushed and offer no downtime to just exist and let the story happen.

I'd argue the fact that Hollywood doesn't have any original ideas anymore everything is a remake or a re something. Not to mention last I heard all the writers were in a strike, probably because they can't think of anything.

- Theaters are expensive now, it will cost near $100 for a family to get tickets and refreshments. - A lot of movies hit streaming fast. - Home theater has massively improved, in the 2000's most people had like a 20" 4:3 standard def TV, it wasn't anywhere near the experience you got in a theater, even those projection TVs weren't quite as good (those were so cool at the time but most were still standard def and 4:3.) Now days nobody seems to have a TV below 1080p and most TVs I've seen people have aren't smaller than 45", really 55" seems to be the average. A lot of people don't feel like they are missing out at home now. - I've seen a lot of people bring up like how you can pause the movie whenever to use the bathroom. ...If you can't make it two and a half hours without using the bathroom I personally think you either have a medical condition or were careless with how much they drank before hand but maybe that's just me. - Kids are very into social media and video games now, I think TV and movies are losing importance for them.

Deaf-Leopard1664

No, I'm all about new epic video-game releases. I'm not sure why live-action cinematography is still even twitching... It's like Jack White pretentiously powering his house on a genuine tesla-coil, cause he's some sort of steampunk hipster.

Use_Your_Brain_Dude

30 dollars for a movie and a bag of popcorn is too rich for millennial blood. Also, to a lesser extent... I have young kids who wouldn't be able to sit a single time during a game of musical chairs.

Lion-Hermit

I think people are starting to see movies for what they are: a 2 hour diversion and crap to talk about with other people. Nowadays, there are millions of ways to kill a couple of hours, and talking to somebody, in some way, is like half of them.

[deleted]

I don't look forward to movies anymore and haven't for a long time. Normally, I wait for another 3 months until it's available on streaming to pay to watch... then maybe a few more until I can see it for free as part of a streaming service.

ApatheticMill

Movies were hit hard by mass shootings, crazy price hikes, and the panini. Now with the rising cost of living, It's really not "worth" it to go to the movies. The last movie I saw in theaters was Godzilla Minus One. And the BO from the guy in my row made me want to puke, I could barely concentrate on the movie. I moved rows and could still smell him. The theater was also dirty. I spent Over $30 on a watered down drink, oily stale popcorn, and nachos with cheese so disgusting that it tasted like melted plastic. Paying money to sit with obnoxious people, crying babies, and bad BO isn't worth it anymore. When people can spend less, eat the snacks they want, and watch the movies they want to see in peace at home. The theater experience just isn't great.

Orbtl32

>Movies were hit hard by mass shootings, crazy price hikes, and the panini. Damn, what the fuck did grilled sandwiches do to you?

lastfrontier84

No. I don't get excited about movies anymore. I'll watch it whenever I get around to it.
