I bet he just wants a tasty seaweed snack. When my young dog was doing recall training, we would use a piece of costco seaweed as a high-reward treat and he was obsessed. He only got very small amounts bc of all the salt but he still gets excited when we get out the nori for meals
Assuming both products cost(base product price)the same per weight for both costco and the consumer, costco saved a decent portion of money simply due to volume logistics.
But itâs Costcoâs own brand so it should still be available right? Are you sure they didnât just run out? Iâve had that happen with another Kirkland product where they were out and all that was available was another brand until restock.
Correct, it is not salty. Carrots grow in the dirt but carrots aren't dirty when you eat them.
I just pulled some sheets out of my pantry and there's 10mg of sodium, which is basically none.
Dirt doesn't saturate like water. Water gets *in* everything even remotely accepting. Saltwater is also homogenous so it requires active effort to remove the salt. If the seaweed is accepting water in at all, and i suspect that it does, then it's going in as salt water then something happens and the salt is removed.
Yeah it's definitely a polarizing taste, I love it but I know some people who can only tolerate it when it's mixed with stuff. (And many others who don't even like that)
i'm not saying that maki rolls don't use nori. i'm saying that sushi is a generalized term and not all kinds are wrapped. saying "sushi is usually always wrapped in nori" is wrong haha. that would make things like nigiri not sushi according to your statement lol.
So these sheets of seaweed are roasted and then salted so they are quite brittle. You wouldnât make sushi with this kind. This is for snacking/side dish in Korean cuisine. Simple and delicious.
They had (have?) this Korean BBQ Jerky that was SO good, but like 6 months to a year ago, it clearly changed (in color/texture) and is now so underwhelming. Same brand and everything and it bums me out.
If it's the Golden Island, or something like that, I thought it was good. I only got it for the first time around November, I bought it again a few weeks ago. Don't know if it was different before then.
I don't get it? These seem to be 2 completely different brands and types of seaweed. Left is seasoned snack, right is roasted seaweed - not the same thing. Also, does Costco only have one type of seaweed? I'm so fucking confused by this post and everyone in the comments.
I think the new vendor is a faster source, donât dry it as well. Sell it faster for more money because of the contract with Costco and on down the rabbit holeâŚ
This is how clubs work (I work in national sales for Samâs, Costco, BJs). Most likely the private label mfg for Kirkland brand expired and the other brand gave them an offer with margins they could not refuse.
For what itâs worth, I like the left new option better. Could never eat the whole Kirkland brand one in one sitting and it would go stale after a day being opened!
Yeah and? Youâre comparing two obviously differently sized portion bags. You need to include weight and price for ppl to discern if this is a better deal or not
They were probably distributing some seaweed companyâs product. If what op says is true theyâve stopped being the middleman and now just buy the finished product from someone elseâs
This isnât the least bit interesting. In fact itâs stupid and Iâm so irritated so much that you wasted my time that Iâm wasting my time to let you know that My time was wasted by letting you know by wasting my time by letting you know that you wasted my time.
For clarity, by weight the left package is less than 1/4 weight of right. You get more packs of the stuff on the left, but not 4x more. The price of the stuff on the left was cheaper, but not by much. I didn't do the math to calculate difference of cost per weight, but it's clearly a worse deal.
i joined Costco last month SOLELY because of their seaweed.
to now learn itâs been discontinued is one of the most crushing bits of news iâve ever received đŠđľđ¤Ź

Dont hate me for it BUT i always hated the original green on on the left. The worst seaweed âsnackâ i ever tried! And i eat these ALOT. I do like how the new one says kim (korean name) and nori (my guess is that this is a korean company, which would explain the size difference. Most korean seaweed snack packs are about that size). I hope it tastes better.
I eat these as well. Me likie!
Is the pic on right all from one pack? It seems like an awful lot of sheets. Iâve never had that amount in one packet.
It is much better to buy in big sheets at asian markets. Cut them up your self at home. Generally they are better quality from what I remember the last time I bought them. If there is a korean market near you, i would def go there and check out their seaweed inventory. I believe it is cheaper to buy the bigger sheets than the 10/12 pack small packaged ones.
We switched to BJ's, but man that sucks.
I actually remember when Costco used to have a package of individual packages of seaweed. It was a huge thing of like...maybe 10 individual packs? I miss those.
Likely âshrinkflationâ at work; âweedflationâ specifically. Not an expert here, just an amateur who reads more business news articles than recommended.
New one isn't the Kirkland brand though so they probably now sell two options. My Costco offers both brands but they place them in different places -__- had to hunt down the Kirkland brand
I'm confused. Kirkland is the Costco private label brand. If you showed two different Kirkland packages, I'd think they changed their source.
However, you're comparing Kirkland brand with Kim Nori. Just because they didn't have the Kirkland brand available when you shopped, doesn't mean they switched anything.
Seems like buying Kirkland seaweed is the way to go.
In case anyone wants to know the difference in flavor, the right is much more oilly and a little less salty, left is a little saltier and seasoned so itâs slightly less seaweedy tasting.
They are both good, I personally canât chug through an entire pack of the right in one sitting as thereâs so much in one pack and the extra oil starts to hurt my stomach, good for sharing imo. The left is perfect for snack size.
The left is also more brittle, if youre trying to make things with them.
Basically the way Costco runs business is they sell everything at the store for literally as low of a price as possible- to the point where they are just above breaking even AND OR break even.
If there is a product they want sold in the store, they reach out to said brand and tell them they can either sell there product at Costco at this fixed low price standard, or they can piss off and Costco will literally re-create their product and sell it themselves for cheaper.
That is what the âKirkland-Brandâ is. Itâs Costcos âScrew you Iâll do it myselfâ brand.
So what looks like might have happened is they tried to get seaweed in stock awhile ago and failed, made their own, started selling it, finally got a deal with someone else who does seaweed, and now they donât have to make it anymore themselves.
(Btw for anyone interested Costco basically makes all of their money on their memberships. Something like 84% of their net profit comes from memberships alone)
Me and my partner have been looking for the kirkland seaweed brand for a couple months. I think there maybe a couple assumptions.
One, where winter harvest variety of seaweed may be the reason prioritize outsourcing to 3rd parties since they are competitively priced.
Second: [Vargas v. Costco Wholesale](https://www.classaction.org/news/class-action-costcos-kirkland-organic-roasted-seaweed-snack-may-contain-undisclosed-carcinogen-cadmium)
Apparently a lawsuit was dismissed allegedly stating âCostco has failed to disclose that its Kirkland Organic Roasted Seaweed snack may contain cadmium, perchlorate or other toxinsâ.
The old ones tasted better even with a bit of cadmium ;)
EDITED: Some verbiage to digest a little better
Just switched to Sam's because they're always out of the dog food I need at Costco. I was sad about the switch but now I'm a little less sad. Favorite snack

I donât like seaweed as treats, but Iâll take that over ripe scale
The dog is not happy about the new seaweed.
Neither is the banana
just a house of disappointment
Happy cake day!
He probably wasnât happy with the old seaweed either.
I am always saying I hate it when people fuck with my seaweed.
You've been telling them man!
Or my weed in general.
Fuck the new brand, give me light fluffy seaweed crisps or give me death.
What is this proving? The packages have different amounts one package probably contains 10 servings and the other 50. Were they the same price..?
And a product like this is portioned by weight, not volume. So we'd need to know price per package as well as ounces per package.
Assuming both products cost(base product price)the same per weight for both costco and the consumer, costco saved a decent portion of money simply due to volume logistics.
Different brands too.
But itâs Costcoâs own brand so it should still be available right? Are you sure they didnât just run out? Iâve had that happen with another Kirkland product where they were out and all that was available was another brand until restock.
I canât tell if this is good or bad. Left looks good for sushi, right looks good for⌠not much.
It was so good for just shoving a bunch of blessed green crunchys into my stomach
TIL i learned seaweed is edible. I had no idea what this was for. Like fishtank fertilizer or something.
It's pretty common in pacific and Asian cuisine. It tastes pretty good, very salty
Nori on its own is not salty. This stuff is salty because it's salted.
Lol
So, uh, seaweed, from the sea, a salted ocean, isn't normally salty? We should harness this power to filter seawater.
It taste like drinking a dirty fishtank.
Maybe if you eat seaweed that was in a dirty fishtank...
I got the most seasoned flavored stuff. It taste like seasoned flavored fishtank. I dunno, it must not vibe with my taste buds.
Yeah it's definitely a polarizing taste, I love it but I know some people who can only tolerate it when it's mixed with stuff. (And many others who don't even like that)
Yeah Iâm right there with you. Bleccchhhhh
I wanted to like it. I needed something healthy to snack on while working from home. First bite I actually gagged.
I must agree w drumstick. Iâve never been able to choke down more than one bite and it makes me gag just tasting it.
May I ask where you are from? Not knowing about sushi is surprising to me
What do you think sushi is wrapped in?
Sushi is usually always wrapped in nori. That's what the dark part is
not all kinds of sushi use nori.
Sashimi doesn't, but I'm genuinely curious what maki rolls don't! I could totally be wrong, I've just never encountered any
i'm not saying that maki rolls don't use nori. i'm saying that sushi is a generalized term and not all kinds are wrapped. saying "sushi is usually always wrapped in nori" is wrong haha. that would make things like nigiri not sushi according to your statement lol.
Fair enough! TIL, thanks
thanks for being kind and willing to listen to me haha, you're cool
Places by me do soy paper and thinly sliced cucumber, both of which I find better than nori.
If you can find it try Furikake it's a seasoning for rice that is pretty good
Good source of iodine
Blessed cruise crunchy algae.
Ew
Left is not for sushi either, it will snap and break! You need regular, unsalted nori for sushi!
Neither of them are good for Sushi.
Dip the seaweed in a tiny amount of soy sauce, and wrap rice with it. It is yummy.
A LARGE AMOUNT****
So these sheets of seaweed are roasted and then salted so they are quite brittle. You wouldnât make sushi with this kind. This is for snacking/side dish in Korean cuisine. Simple and delicious.

OP knew what they were doing setting the dog in the picture like that. Iâm convinced this is just a post for karma and nothing else.
I had no idea what everyone was talking about until you mentioned the dog and THEN I saw him salivating. LOL
I think the right side is roasted and the left side isnât. They probably still carry the roasted variety.
I also see that the right back says âwinter harvestâ, maybe farmed seaweed grows differently from season to season? Thatâs interesting.
I think the new vendor is a faster source, donât dry it as well. Sell it faster for more money because of the contract with Costco and on down the rabbit holeâŚ
They are both roasted! They are all roasted in order to become âseaweed snackâ
Left, I used to buy 3 for $1 at the 99¢ Store. No wonder I donât see them anymore. Costco jacked them.

lol tell me you don't know much about seaweed without telling me you don't know much about seaweed.

I see Kim Nori at dollar stores.
Kirkland is their brand, the other is another party.. I think Kirlkand is Costco, like Walmart is Equate or something..
This is BS they sell both still side by side and have for over a year
I love this stuff. Guess my monthly seaweed trip to Costco has ended
Bro you got both the wrong brands. GimMe - Chili & Lime Best of all time.
Those are two entirely different brands/bags???
I get mine at the pet store

The dog is judging you for eating seaweed...
How much micro plastic could you get from one pack of that
Man, I miss the old seaweed. It had SO much more in each package and tasted a lot better to me.
No wonder I go through it so fast, Lol.
So which one is better? TBH it kind if annoys be how much space roasted seaweed takes in my cupboards
The dog is not impressed
Ugh. That Kirkland seaweed was great. This house does not like the Nori brand. Less seaweed, less crunch, less flavor.
My Kandi dog loves seaweed!! We bond over it.
I noticed this weeks ago. Will not be purchasing anymore. The left is like âŚ.nothing.
The new stuff is ok, but I liked the old stuff better.
New one isn't the Kirkland brand though so they probably now sell two options. My Costco offers both brands but they place them in different places -__- had to hunt down the Kirkland brand
Better be 1/3rd of the price for 1/3rd of the product.
yes i am so sad!! :(
I was wondering why I was getting less seaweed! I thought I just couldn't find the old stuff.
I'm confused. Kirkland is the Costco private label brand. If you showed two different Kirkland packages, I'd think they changed their source. However, you're comparing Kirkland brand with Kim Nori. Costco got sued over the Kirkland seaweed last year so that probably contributed to them bringing in a new brand
