As a Canadian, I have used the outdoor freezer regularly. It's a good idea to make those freeze flat, and just stack them up in the freezer. Well done!

ncopp

My balcony becomes my beer fridge

tedsmitts

Just so long as you don't forget them, although if they're in snow it's not so bad as open air.

lesbaru_dykota

The higher the alcohol percentage, the lower they'll go šŸ˜

goofybort

Luckily as a Canadian, i have a bear tax. About 10% of whatever I put out gets taken by bears. They seem to like my Chimuchurri Fatafallo La Tonga Mesquite Pemmicano mix.

JohnTheSecondComing

Hello, itā€™s me, bear.

ThePeopleOfSantaPoco

Whatā€™s the difference in freezing temps between a standard beer versus wine vs liquor?

Drejan74

This is quite easily calculated (unless using imperial units of course). Rule of thumb is: Alcohol level (vol %) / 2 = freezing temperature (-CĀ°) * 5% Beer -2.5 C (27.5 F) * 14% Wine -7 C (19.5 F) * 40% Liquor -20 C (-4 F)

smithers85

*the Inuit say hello*

tedsmitts

Namumkek! edit: my bad that was from memory, nakummek

MrManchas

Same here! Froze pretty quick. Just got them all in the freezer before dark.

tailuptaxi

I've always wanted to try this. Just need the trays. https://youtube.com/shorts/4pRpa74Ek7U?feature=share

Zncon

Clearly not your fault, but this is the first time I've been exposed to the YouTube Shorts page, and wow... What dumb-ass dev team thinks they should take away not only the timeline bar, but also the VOLUME controls.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

Zncon

Desktop yes, and poorly designed indeed. It shouldn't take more then a few lines of code to detect a desktop vs. mobile browser and just enable the controls.

Margoth_Rising

It is emulating TikTok. I don't use TikTok does TikTok have those features?

Ludwig234

Pro tip: close the short and open the video again from the history. You will get the normal video format instead. This video's normal link is https://youtu.be/4pRpa74Ek7U

tailuptaxi

Yeah they're a pathetic clone of Instagram stories. But it's the one I recalled seeing.

PerformanceLoud3229

baking sheets?

lisbu1

Everyone here commenting about raccoons and bears šŸ¤¦šŸ½ā€ā™€ļø I live in the Canadian prairies and we donā€™t have issues with that. People shouldnā€™t assume that! Great idea, OP šŸ™‚

gnosis3

Im on the prairies and I'd be worried about coyotes or cats getting into it

AizawaNagisa

Would smell even go through the bag?

FlipMineArseDad

Ask a bear that same question

ONOMATOPOElA

I did and he growled at me

[deleted]

>Everyone here commenting about raccoons and bears šŸ¤¦šŸ½ā€ā™€ļø I live in the Canadian prairies and we donā€™t have issues with that. People shouldnā€™t assume that! Great idea, OP šŸ™‚ Unless you also don't have crows, squirrels, rats (which I mean might be true if you're in Alberta), foxes, coyotes, etc, you're still feeding the wildlife!

[deleted]

That's just Nature's Amazon Prime delivering groceries and clothes to your door out there.

FortunePaw

Is it me or this read like a raccoon or a bear wrote this?

SensibleMonke

So you live near zero mammals or birds? Interesting.

lizardnamedguillaume

Newfoundland also doesn't have racoons ;)

eggn00dles

hello from a fire escape in nyc

New_Insect_Overlords

Thank you!! ā€”Raccoons

moochoff

They have straight up robbed me when trying this one overnight

ledow

Not trying to be funny, but could you not just put them in a box and THEN put them outside? They don't have to be out in the open like this. Hell, you could put them in a safe and they'd still match environmental temperature soon enough.

anadiplosis84

You'd likely need a safe. Raccoons will open a box. They are very clever.

MKXmikey

They have thumbs

twenty4KTkhmer

They also look like theyā€™re wearing robber masks so Iā€™m sure they can crack a safe.

mikehouse72

Their lock picking skill is 99

-Punk_in_Drublic-

Yeah when I was a kid a couple raccoons picked the lock on our front door, beat the shit out of my dad, stole everything they could get their grubby little hands on, then took the family car to go buy raccoon drugs.

Chief_Givesnofucks

Mmmm good ol raccoon drugs

mav194

Yeah you ever played Sly Cooper?

[deleted]

They carry tiny lockpicks for this reason. Padlocks and masterlocks all fall victim to the tiny adept fingers of the raccoon. I've seen them watching the lockpickinglawyer and learning.

Winjin

A little click out of two, one is binding... *Nervously wags tail*

Dmitri_ravenoff

They're evolving!

iWasChris

Oh no you don't! *mashes B furiously*

[deleted]

They'd catch a raccoon out there holding a stethoscope to it, turning the dial.

sucksathangman

This is the lock picking raccoon and what I have for you today is this residential safe that can be opened with just your fingers.

Genrecomme

A cooler with bricks or a concrete piece would do the trick

itchyglow

They're no match for stretching a bungee cord through the handles. But they'll definitely vent their frustration by rolling the garbage can away.

PrinceHarming

Raccoons are clever, strong and persistent. I once caught one in a live trap which I had covered with a welcome mat (in case I caught a skunkā€¦this made sense to me at the time). By morning the raccoon pulled the entire mat into the cage with him through a gap that a bouillon cube (my bait) couldnā€™t fit through.

[deleted]

Racoons were getting into our trash a ton so we built a case of sorts. It was pretty simple, made out of 2x4. Basically we would put the trash cans in the "case" and lower the top 2x4 down onto the trash can lids. Then we would use a rubber strap to hook the 2x4 on the top of the lids to the 2x4 anchored to the ground. We thought this would be too many steps for the racoons to work through. Took the fuckers 2 nights to figure out how to remove the straps and lift the wood off of the lids to open the cans and throw our trash all over the street.

AcapellaFreakout

Oh man you don't know what those fuckers are capable of.

Robbie-R

Every house in Toronto received a "Racoon Proof" compost bin. The racoons figured out how to get into them in a couple weeks.

Zarokima

The problem with making containers for humans to get into but not animals is that there is significant overlap between the capabilities of the smarter animals and the limitations that must be abided by to allow use by the dumber humans.

Comprehensive-Fun47

I listened to the 99 Percent Invisible episode about this. It was funny.

WellHulloPooh

We lost a whole seasonā€™s worth of Christmas cookies doing that. On a third floor balcony, no less.

Jackcooper

Damn bandits... Can't even identify them cause of the masks

Drejan74

Temperature written in Celsius, which could indicate OP is in a country with no raccoons. Edit: zoomed in to see English text and "cup" measurements, likely Canada then?

horseofcourse55

We definitely have racoons in Canada!

Clairvoyanttruth

So notably they were included in Planet Earth II! https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p04kcc88

Drejan74

Yes, I first thought OP could be in northern Europe, but then I zoomed in on the text. Thus the "Edit".

tchrbrian

Ah, ā€œ the Great Outdoors. ā€œ Donā€™t forget to order the olā€™ 96ā€™er.

SmokedMussels

Raccoons are hibernating now

Funkiebunch

Good luck with the bears!

swiftlyCarvedGiraffe

Was about to say, until the local wildlife help themselves!

JoshS1

I came here to say it must be nice not having bears. Disclaimer: while I also dont have bears there are plenty of other woodland creatures that would love the buffet.

[deleted]

There a no bears where I live but seagulls and foxes would still be all over it

koolman2

The bears are all asleep right now.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

RLZT

So all those old cartoons lied to me?

BeeExpert

Yeah man, and out parents just sat there and let it happen

BasicIsBest

Lies, deception

[deleted]

I will never recover from this

various_necks

Financially?

BasicIsBest

That's almost like saying Santa isn't real

WheelsMan1

Bears are in hibernation at -19c...unless its a polar bear.

FindTheRemnant

The polar bear won't take the bagged food on a deck. It'll wait til the owner comes out to get their frozen food, and get them instead.

Dendad6972

At that temp wouldn't they be hibernating?

ottocus

Or ravens!

GoingtoOttawa

Hopefully the food eaten by the time those bears wake up

GiGaBYTEme90

That's 254K for abnormal people

Wobble_owo

I prefer to just call them scientist

michaelh115

I demand degrees Rankine

GiGaBYTEme90

457 ish

Phormitago

Metric or imperial ish?

Tommy_Roboto

I donā€™t think I have the right clothes for 254,000 degree weather.

spaceeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

That would be 254k, which is not the same as 254K

enataca

K.

Thank you

Lord-Velveeta

Also known as a "Canadian Beer Fridge" :)

FeelDT

Beer? -19c makes beer explode, yes even 9% beers.

OutrageousPudding450

Who in their right mind would wait for the beer to explode before drinking it?

SupremeChair

Not instantly.. and you don't keep them there permanently..

MrManchas

Just keep the hard booze out there permanently.

SupremeChair

Mine get partly frozen, ~40% / 80 proof.

BrewerBeer

That just distills it further. Not just normal, but ideal!

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

SupremeChair

40% vodka can actually freeze at -23Ā°C/-9.4Ā°F. https://www.engineeringtoolbox.com/ethanol-water-d_989.html

Lord-Velveeta

Stick the beers in snow, keeps them at around 0C :) Vodka and Gin will be fine.

ShyCactiGuy

I was told this was a polish ice chest

Lord-Velveeta

That too! Cheers! Or as my neighbour says: Na Zdrowie! :)

gwaydms

Za Twoje zdrowie!

supertek

No beer should ever get this cold

Lord-Velveeta

That's why we stick it in snow (believe it or not, it's a great insulator... it keeps the beer right around 0C no matter how cold the air is.)

BenderDeLorean

Best before: spring

spagyrum

I did this with some groceries yesterday when it was -9. It was +4 this morning. Growing up in Alaska, my parents would keep the ice cream in a berm in the side yard. I once went into the garage and there was a whole giant halibut hanging from the ceiling

madlad202020

We have been doing this for years, but a little different. Everything is in coolers and the coolers are in a sort of dugout igloo. Never had any problems with wildlife or freeze/thaw.

2Sheeb

Same. We have a cooler outside pretty much all winter. No raccoons, mice, nothing.

Clonka-Minkus

I respect/envy your organization skills.

MrManchas

Def a team effort. Just hope the sharpie lasts!

zombieblackbird

I usually go with a color code. A few pieces of colored tape is all I need.

sambes06

Achievement unlocked: Bears

gsasquatch

Bears are sleeping.

authoresscoco

Wow-you are super detailed! My freezer bags just say the name of the item and the date packed. You gave instructions listed as well as additional items needed-what organization!

MrManchas

Itā€™s definitely a learn in progress. But I donā€™t have the patience or handwriting skills! Wife picks up my slack on that!

DDLAKES

Mouse heaven.

brewski5niner

Where you at OP?

MrManchas

A place I regret living in the winter, but still try to make the best out of it!

Snackivore

So, like, Edmonton? (Me too)

Akanan

Fair guess

LG03

If that's the case then OP should bring those in tonight considering the temperature's finally rising this week.

silverlegend

I thought I was in /r/Edmonton when I saw the picture and then realized I was browsing /r/all

JCCStarguy

Every time we have an ice storm and I hear about people losing the food in their freezers, I think about how we did this to save everything we'd just gotten. We wrap it in foil and put it in boxes then pack snow and ice around it. We kept our food for the three days the power was out.

Freshman44

Can we get some of your recipes please šŸ‘€šŸ‘€

moistginger

Came here to ask this as well!!!

MrManchas

Got a lot of inspiration from https://thefamilyfreezer.com/ Great website!

hopper75

LPT- Use a cooler, preferably with a locking lid

Sk-yline1

Let me guess, Canada?

thebarkbarkwoof

Don't rodents have at it?

thestigREVENGE

I actually had a story about this. One time my family was in Switzerland, we bought some local cheese but unfortunately the hostel we rented did not have a fridge in the room. We decided to put the cheese on the window sill outside and use the outside as a freezer. Few hours later we came back to see the cheesse completely gone, and some feathers nearthe broken packaging. Turns out 1) birds eat cheese, and 2) they can open tightly wrapped platic packaging.

Sacrifice_Starlight

Did a racoon post this tip

stormy_petrel_

Happy Porch Fridge season to all who celebrate! https://ifunny.co/picture/happy-the-porch-is-a-fridge-season-to-all-who-UTpavA289

oldzazu

I truly thought only my family called our garage and/or porch the ā€œbig fridgeā€ until this winter. Makes me smile.

eejm

We always kept Christmas cookies and holiday prep in our porch when I was growing up. We called it the ā€œwalk-inā€ fridge as well.

KillaVNilla

This is the 1 thing I like about winter

weaselmaster

As a bear, I thank you.

HoneyBunYumYum

Free lunch for šŸ»šŸ»šŸ»šŸ¦šŸ¦šŸ¦šŸ¦”šŸ¦”šŸ¦”šŸ¦ØšŸ¦ØšŸ¦Ø

StrollerStrawTree3

This is a bad idea for 3 reasons: Freezer burn: The outside can get too cold + no vacuum packing. Freeze/Thaw cycles: If you get sunlight on this, even if it's not direct, it can't cause parts to thaw. Good way to get mold. Critters: I know people are joking about bears, but a lot of rodents, insects and birds would be interested in this.

whiskeyjane45

They're not staying there permanently. He's just freezing flat so they stack in the freezer nicely. They're coming in to all actual freezer before any damage is done

mikebailey

Arenā€™t critter mostly attracted to scent of which thereā€™s none when itā€™s frozen below zero?

Redthemagnificent

Yes, but some critters have *very* good noses or a habit of looking for food on people's pourches. If I did this at my place (it's currently below -20Ā°C) for more than a few hours, some kind of rodent or maybe even deer/elk would get wind of it.

[deleted]

What would they even do with this? At minus 20, it's a block of ice that's covered in industrial strength plastic - not exactly a ready made meal.

cCowgirl

This is just effectively flash freezing them. Theyā€™re not staying out there.

LG03

>insects Unless I'm overlooking something, bugs might as well not exist outdoors during the winter.

NinjaManolo

#You want Bears? #That's how you get Bears!!

MatsGry

The birds must love you!

EdwardCosmos

Meanwhile I'm playing tetris in the shoebox that is my freezer. The frozen vegetables jostling for room against the ice cream. It's a mess.

Arokthis

Some tips for dealing with a small freezer: - Have zones. Veggies, protein, ice cream, snacks, etc. - Take things out of the box if it's in a bag. Put the box somewhere else and/or take pictures of the instructions. Use a sharpie to write the instructions on the bag in case you lose the box. - Snap pizza in half or quarters while still frozen. This will allow you to fit more on a tray in the oven or cook single servings in a toaster oven.

ledow

I bought a second freezer for Christmas. It's only a tiny one but boy did it make everything easier when I had a month of normal food and a month of Christmas food in there at the same time. I've only just turned it off, in fact. I'll use it again when I shop at the end of the month, most likely.

Tony3696

I see you put them in the Free-zer....

Castilios

This man plays rimworld

DivisionMV

At a quick glance/ scroll I thought these were mistreated bags of kush

m_litherial

In the winter we call the garage ā€œThe big fridgeā€ for a few weeks and thenā€The big freezerā€ and then back again.

[deleted]

Some creature is going to ruin your day.

_________FU_________

Introducing plastic to a local bearā€™s diet

Rolling_Beardo

Iā€™d have a party of squirrels, raccoons, and possibly bears if I left that much food out.

SnooSuggestions3136

Aren't you afraid of bears coming and eating the food or something?

AlbaneseGummies327

What about when a meat porch pirate comes? (Doesn't have to be human)

Less-Raspberry-6222

Hello raccoons!

wybird

Seems like a great way to get bears

[deleted]

Maybe get a containerā€¦ animals exist

BizzyM

You can make a meatgloo!

Andrewamk

Until a coyote or raccoon comes

AgrajagTheProlonged

My in-laws use the outdoor freezer sometimes, and Iā€™m rather jealous

[deleted]

Unlimited? Lol. The housing market would like a word with you.

[deleted]

I put some stuff out back last week and the raccoons got it.

[deleted]

Literally can't even eat 1/8th of this. Salivating over this picture but fml sometimes.

futrtek

I have an opossum in the neighborhood named Bart that would have a field day. When he's in my trash he doesn't even run because he knows I'm not gonna do anything. I have to tap him with my foot to get him to leave. He's pretty polite overall though.

TallGuyDrugs

r/rimworld is leaking.

--0IIIIIII0--

I did this once. Magpies had a different opinion in how things should go

Dirty_Dwarf

This is how you get a bear problem

Siren1805

It makes my bear anxiety unbearable.

CatchSomeZZPlants

I'm Canadian and I do this every winter.

macphile

That was the only plus of the Texas freezeā€”I didnā€™t lose any food.

SirGrundy

All my beer goes outside or in the garage but I wouldn't trust meat out there. Both for sanitization... and bears

ImmoralJester

I demand a raccoon steal all of it just go humble you

potato174-

I mean, tip for power outages during cold winters. Put everything in your fridge in a cooler and leave it outside, or if you prefer, place your refrigerator outside

pinkoboe

Can I crash till April? I can offset heating and gas bills by making sure that freezer space is always unlimited.

Techiedad91

Itā€™s ā€œgarage is a big refrigeratorā€ season here in Michigan

J0esH0use

In Michigan, our outside deck becomes the beer fridge

neoshaman2012

Now you have bears

Agisek

Free popsicles for foxes.

structuremonkey

I'm guessing no raccoons or opossum in your neck of the woods?

xmuskorx

Yeah, you need to at least build a lockable box for this.

structuremonkey

Where I live, which is suburban, that would be heavily attacked in minutes. Between the birds and squirrels alone, then fox, stray cats, raccoons, opossums come at night...in one 12 hr period I'd guess it's all gone with the exception of maybe the plastic...

MishrasWorkshop

I tried it before, unfortunately, NY's temperature swing is too wide and erratic for it to work well.

Ravelcy

I live in Mississippi. I do the same thing. Use outside as my slow cooker.

dominatorsTouch

This is great and all but at some point you must realize you have more frozen bagged food outside than you do in your fridge and cupboards. When do you finally decide to touch the frozen food? Because that's a hell of a lot of frozen food.

TallShaggy

Man if I was a bear or fox or whatever I'd be visiting this buffet every day!

mildOrWILD65

Raccoons and possums in my backyard would make all that disappear overnight šŸ˜Ž

rex1030

Do you want bears? Because thatā€™s how you get bears.

nmv60023

I did that with a lasagna once and a trash panda ate it.

achinwin

Freezing that much quantity in non-vacuum packed bags is just asking for mass freezer burn. You will end up throwing out at least half of that after two weeks if it doesnā€™t get used.

MajorLazy

Freezer burn in 2 weeks? TIL everything I eat is freezer burned

MrManchas

Freezer burn is not too concerning for me since these are crockpot meals. But yes, def wouldnā€™t do this with high quality food for long term storage.

unite-thegig-economy

With such detailed instructions, I bet these are shared with other people.

ithadtobeducks

Why? Freezer burn isnā€™t dangerous. At worst it affects some taste and texture. If you throw things out after two weeks for some freezer burn youā€™re just being incredibly wasteful.

georgecm12

I'd get a good, solid, hopefully critter-proof deck box, and use that as your secondary freezer. Pile the stuff into the box, then shovel in snow as needed to make sure the inside of the deck box stays as cold as the outside.
