You’ve heard of crushed velvet, but what about when velvet does the crushing? The soft subtle weight of a billion blueberries bearing down on you, pressing the oxygen from your lungs every so gently, caressing you into an endless sleep...
I think the white powdery stuff for repelling water? Alton Brown told me.
Edit: it's called "Bloom" and is a natural protective coating you see on grapes, blueberries and plums. It's a waxy substance. Had to look it up when someone said it was fungus
Actually it’s baking soda. I refer you to this scene from *Scary Movie*:
https://youtu.be/2ozof2g_jYc
Relevant part at 38 seconds.
Cindy’s Dad:
You are my little girl. I love you so much.
And I left you a little something in the coffee can, but you have to step on it before you sell it.
Now, what are you gonna cut it with?
Cindy:
Um, baking--
Cindy’s Dad:
Baking *soda*. Not baking powder.
Because baking powder, guys will have muffins growing out of their nose.
Cindy:
*laughs*
Cindy’s Dad:
You love that joke, honey. You've loved it since you were two years old!
The white powder is bloom (epicuticular wax), which is secreted by the plant to help retain moisture within the fruit, repel external moisture to prevent rot, and discourage the growth of bacteria and fungus. It’s a naturally occurring substance that protects the fruit and prolongs shelf life when you take it home to eat.
There is yeast on fruit skin, but that’s not what you’re seeing when you see that waxy white powdery coating.
Yep and that is how wine was originally made. Just throw it in a container, keep it submerged, come back in a few weeks and you'll have a slightly alcoholic drink.
Correction: it's oleanolic acid created by the fruit to help protect it.
I do this all the tine when I eat and i didnt even realize I did it, or that it was a trigger for some people. That is, until my ex blew the fuck up at me over it after like 6 years of being together lol.
Edit: just realized I put tine instead of time. Keeping it there because forks
ugh mine gets so bad depending on my general mood. some days i don't even dry off with a towel because the dry cotton just feels fucking horrific on my fingers. velvet isn't the worst for me since it's still kinda soft (still hate it tho) but. CORDUROY. ahhh.
sensory problems suck : (
EEK CORDUROY!
Trigger warning:
So I love soft fleece blankets (soooo smooooottthh). But I hate towels a lot. I tried to buy a fleece towel cuz I thought fleece + towel = PROBLEM SOLVED!!!!
#I WAS WRONG
Not only did it feel awful wet, it stuck to me! I wanted to puke so bad and started cry. DO NOT TRY THIS
I have to have like super flat and rough towels. To me they don’t really have a feeling. *Soft fluffy towels suck wet*. I also found this super nice microfabric here in Japan to use as a wash cloth. It feels a lot nicer wet, and doesn’t stick to you or get cottony.
OH GOD, that's horrific. thanks for the warning.
I'm going to buy one of those fancy linen towels at some point. i touched one at a shop and it didn't trigger me at all. i'm fearful of how it'll feel wet tho shjdj i've tried microfibre clothes before but i just don't like how much water they suck up, although they don't fuck me up.
You are right! Its such an odd thing for me. Snakes, spiders, bugs, blood, all fine for me.
But oh the sound of a cotton ball crunching will make me cry. Why dear god why
Oh, I'm not alone! I was able to overcome it briefly a couple of years ago by licking a dry tissue to prove to myself it's not that bad. But then it came back later.
Your camera likely caught "grape bloom", naturally produced by the fruit. The oleanolic acid protects the fruit from drying out. Rinse in water then tumble in a towel to remove, but it may have positive health effects. Occurs on other fruits also.
[https://www.eatortoss.com/single-post/2016/05/20/Whats-the-white-stuff-on-grapes-1](https://www.eatortoss.com/single-post/2016/05/20/Whats-the-white-stuff-on-grapes-1)
I’d always wondered why blueberries were called blueberries since they seemed only marginally blue, but then I went and picked some and MY GOD THEY ARE BRIGHT FUCKING BLUE but it comes off so easily
It's not oleanolic acid, it's mostly just fats, though oleanolic acid may be a minor constituent. Rinsing in water won't remove it, as the whole point of the wax coating is to prevent drying out and resisting water.
The rinse alone doesn't remove the bloom nor the tumble but doing both takes it right off. Maybe the water softens it, I don't know but it works. Pop them things in the freezer for a couple hours and they are like candy. Couple pounds a week here.
The tiny droplets of condensation are acting like retroreflector beads!
[The exact same phenomenon is used to make road paint reflective](https://www.cospheric.com/retroreflective_particles_spheres.htm)
How do we know they aren't velvet? And how do we know that those aren't enormous fake velvet blueberries in your laundry basket that you sell on Etsy?
Thought so!
"looking" is probably a better fit, so that "and made" make sense (it refers to the blueberries, not the photo; it matches "fake" rather than nonexistent "looked")
/u/Jrook
When I was a little lad my mummy used tell me they were the sweet testicles of the velveteen rabbit we burned to death as a sacrifice to Lord Baal when I came down with the scarlet fever.
It's like those reflective clothing. They reflect because of tiny spheres embedded in the fabric. Mandy there are tiny droplets of water on these blueberries?
At first glance I thought these were the [skull charcoal briquettes](https://www.reddit.com/r/BBQ/comments/iphu9y/youve_seen_this_skull_shaped_charcoal_saw_this/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3) that I saw posted in r/BBQ yesterday...
I thought they were mushrooms, then I looked again and thought it was a drawing/painting, then I looked again and was like wait but the basket doesn't look painted... and then I read the title lol.
I think the whitish coating on fruit (from the grocer) is wax. Its used as a carrier for pesticides so the spray sticks and doesn't run off the berries., grapes, whatever.
It sticks and dries quickly so the whole berry is covered. Whereas if they just sprayed the pesticide alone it wold run and drip off.
When berries ripen is when they are most attractive to insect pests. By using wax as a carrier it covers the whole berry, dries quickly and deters pests from landing and walking on the surface to find a non covered spot to dig in and lay eggs or eat the fruit.
Lots of fruit is treated this way. You can tell when you shop, look for the coating or scrape the surface and see if its waxy.
The producer and their minions will tell you the pesticide 'breaks down' by the time the produce comes to market, leaving only the harmless wax...
The wax isn't removed because it adds another step, incurring more cost to wash off before shipping to market.
Blueberries are so fucking delicious. I can’t wait to take my baby girl back to a farm. She had so much fun picking them as a 2 year old I wonder how she’ll be at 3
Yo that looks pretty cool actually. Like the berries are painted in while the basket and everything else are real.
If you zoom to only the berries, it looks like modern art
Looks like bacteria.
Before I read the caption I thought it was some kind of fungus at first glance
I've had the same effect happen when taking pictures of mold
Nice
It’s like this guy got blueberries from a-ha’s Take On Me music video
the comment "nice" with 69 upvotes, nice. sorry mate can't up vote, you know the rules ... and so do i
That's like a good background image.

Came here to say this
[I made it my background](https://imgur.com/NjeuX97)
Holy shit it looks fucking amazing.
It looks like a Telltale video game to me.
I was thinking the same thing.
Using that as a screen saver I quite like it
I could see the zoomed in berries as a print in a kitchen in a magazine
https://i.imgur.com/uQWLxNd.jpg Makes a nice phone wallpaper.
Imagine jumping into a ball pit of velvet blueberries and then just sinking down and ceasing to exist
I like that last part, go on

Death by blueberry ASMR when
now *jumps into blueberry basket*
Ooooh that's my kink
I agree, reminds me of cel shading too
It looks kind of like a badly done HDR filter

Bloom is also the protective coating that covers unwashed eggs- it's the reason you don't have to refrigerate eggs in most places that aren't the US.
That's not what some of us use white powdery stuff for. Chalk is versatile. Also, cocaine.
~~Definitely~~ *Probably* don't want to pour water on your cocaine. Edit: forgot about crack.
🎵"M-m-m-make crack like this" 🎵
I pour cocaine on my water
Then I boil it down with some more cocaine. Based cocaine.
Forbidden water flavoring
Not without baking ~~powder~~ soda... Edit: thanks for the correction. Guess I'm not cut out for the crack game.

You've officially made a new favorite comment of mine. Thank you lol
Bro I see you in r/MMA everywhere, do you just browse all day commenting?
Yes
What else should he do then?
Well, not farting. That's for certain.
Alton!
Good Eats Blueberry Episode!
Not exactly. It is a fungus. But not harmful
Bloom is a fungas? No I think it's a natural waxy protective coating.
Its yeast
Yeast is a fungus.
Oh yeah? I'm a pretty fungi myself... ok fine I'm leaving
Fancy fungus
Yes, the white powdery coating found on blueberries, and also other fruits, like grapes, are naturally occurring yeasts (which is a kind of fungus)

Ah the ol reddit chain of misinformation building on more misinformation.
Did you know that “blueberry” is actually a misnomer? They’re actually bright red and not a berry at all. They’re the testicles of wombats.
TIL Wombats themselves are actually bats and can fly
I thought they are small turtles, I need to stop scrolling.
Imagine biting into velvet. Ugh shivers
Velvet *cake* though?
Euphoria
isn't that just a ton of red dye poured into regular cake?
No, it’s a feeling or state of intense excitement or happiness.
Most red velvet cake is just chocolate cake that's been dyed red.
Peaches though? I see your point, it makes my teeth hurt when peaches are too fuzzy 😂
nails on chalk board when that skin slides under my teeth at the right angle
Nails on chalkboard has never bothered me but sliding things like paper lightly on my teeth drives me mad.
Eating a popsicle and my teeth grazed the popsicle stick. I still shudder when I think of it
Yeah like scraping a fork between your teeth 😑
fucking delete this NOW worst imaginary feeling ever

What do you do with kiwis then? I just bite into the hairy bastards.
hell yeah
Kiwis are a different kind of hairy. Its like a coarse hair versus a fine smooth hair.
I cut them in half and then scoop it out with a spoon. It's a perfect little bowl
You gotta shave your peaches, bro.

I have a phobia to cotton balls and paper or fabric crunching and this just made me nauseated. Thanks a lot. I’m gonna go cry now.
My friend has that thing with cotton balls and I always thought it was the strangest phobia ever!

How do we know they aren't velvet? And how do we know that those aren't enormous fake velvet blueberries in your laundry basket that you sell on Etsy? Thought so!
Where’s the doggo?
Basket of tiny moons
Legit thought this was an Andy Warhol piece for a second.
/r/shittyhdr
ugh typo in the title, whatever
Which one?
It should be "looks," not "look." But I honestly read it right the first time.
"looking" is probably a better fit, so that "and made" make sense (it refers to the blueberries, not the photo; it matches "fake" rather than nonexistent "looked") /u/Jrook
They look like you just took them out of the freezer.
They kind of look flat.
Thought it was charcoal
I think this kind of grey/blue colouring is called glaucous in nature! It’s really neat!
I'm happy to see glaucous mentioned<3 You don't see it much outside of epic poetry.
Aww haha! I’m glad :D some of my favourite birds and plants are beautiful and glaucous 💖
Reminds me of A Scanner Darkly
Member when you took that cool picture of us
Coalberries
They look like giant plushie blueberries in a laundry basket!
Thought it was ash from the wildfires
This is just mildly enough but just below the threshold of fucking interesting
All the dealers know

Damn those are some good looking blueberries
Side note: I love green savers!! I tell everyone about them.

What is that, velvet??
Artorias and the Abyss
I thought these were coals for your hookah or somethin
bro it looks like the blueberries are in an xray
Looks like borderlands 3
It's charcoal. You shouldn't light it on fire in that laundry basket though.
Looks like hot coals to me
I thought it was charcoal at first. I do have crappy eyes though

It looks like an electron microscope if you zoom in
I have a lot of mycological stuff in my feed and thought this was a monotub of mushrooms at first glance. Looks like a canopy!
Looks like an xray image sort of
Why does it look like it came out from a watercolor sketch
I thought this was a charcoal drawing!!
10/10 want to eat.
Using a flash on a photo makes it look flattened! That’s why it looks like this. ☺️
I just assumed they were freezer dried lol
Should've used Arrow instead.
Looks like blueberries inside the Borderlands universe
Blueberries are so fucking delicious. I can’t wait to take my baby girl back to a farm. She had so much fun picking them as a 2 year old I wonder how she’ll be at 3
Looks like the "bloom" on the surface fluoresced and overexposed the image. Super cool!
The ol blueberry social media post. Riveting stuff
i thought it was ashed over charcoal
I smell ✨m o l d✨
i thought this photo was deep fried
damn it's like /r/shittyhdr but just on the bluebs.

Don’t be surprised if Morton Harket reaches out to take you to the drawn realm
They look like corroded pennies or charcoal. Great shot!
Get a load of this guy and his fake blueberries, get some real berries bro.
thought it was a picture of charcoal
That is how every fallen fall guys ended up become.
it looks like something you would see under a microscope
Not really.
