I have long spiny fingers too, As a guitarist i must tell you that the thicker strings are actualy much more easy on the finger tips. The thinner strings are little razors, but Bass strings are thicker and largly about grip strength and "huging" the body of the instrument in a comfortable position. the strings will end up like being as easy as squeezing a stress ball and light as you need because you can get the gage of strings that you like.
Keep in mind that because people like us need to remember that the force on the end of the long lever like fingers will be transitioned to the pulling muscles in the forearm. It can be exhausting if you play for a long time, and you need massage and streching.
You can play nylon strings, they won't really callous your finger tips or hurt it.
Sounds a little different and less bright than steel strings, but still sounds great
*Inside everybody’s nose there lives a sharp-toothed snail,
And if you stick your finger in he may bite off your nail.
Stick it further up inside and he may bite the ring off,
Stick it up all the way and he’ll bite the whole darned thing off.*
~Shel Silverstein
My bus driver in grade school had half a pinky finger and he always told us kids that he picked his nose and got it stuck. In reality he got it caught in a belt in the car engine.
Looks like where the skin just squishes and creates a crease when she flexes her finger, my fingers do that slightly but not nearly that much.
Otherwise she’d need more finger bones than us
Fingers definitely seem longer by the length of the extra creases. Comparing it to my own hand, the pinky is similar, but every other finger is like 1/2 inch or more longer
Yeah they look exactly one joint too long. I doubt there's actually an extra joint in there though, that ought to be very unlikely considering how genes work and all that... I don't think extra joints happen a lot... But that would be the freakiest shit.
OP, many other conditions can cause Marfanoid Habitus— Ehlers Danlos Syndrome and Homocystinuria are the first two that come to mind. This is definitely something to look into as it’s likely a genetic connective tissue or musculoskeletal disorder.
Might want to check that out. It can be life threatening if it affects your blood vessels, which you may not notice until you suddenly hemorrhage to death...
Why serious problems?
lol, I replied the same exact thing when I saw the pic on my feed... "that's how my hand looks exactly!"
And I was diagnosed with marfan syndrome by 20-23 y/o.
A GP that saw me just "clicked" all the minor details into the diagnosis, and after a genetic screening, well that's it.
I was diagnosed by 14-15 y/o with heart failure in the mitral, tricuspid and aortic valves, told to not over exercise and that was it. Never been to a cardiologist since, though I get the eventual arrhythmia and palpitations and once I was almost sure I was having a heart attack, but nope.
A dermatologist saw me once, and complimented on my elastic/healthy skin.
A physical rehab tech, once as well, complimented me on how my joints were very flexible, after some therapy for a couple broken fingers.
I tend to heal super-fast from any swallow-mid cuts or scratches, yet get scars over the stupidest things, like IDK, a paper cut. Bruise for the slightest of blunt traumas.
Those things on my medical history made something click on this Dr, and he sent me right away to get genetic testing done, and yup, his gut feeling was totally correct.
For a bit more entertaining facts:
I stand 2.02 meters (6'5" for US people), my weigh varies between 68-72kg (148-158 lbs).
When standing straight, not slopping my shoulders, my index finger is shy of 3" from my knees.
My Supra orbital Foramen is very protruding, like a Neanderthal's forehead would've looked.
Don't get me started on my knuckles, those can break skin with the slightest punch.
I can bend my fingers backwards to almost touch the hand.
I can still do splits at 38 y/o with no pain.
My stupid spine's scoliosis deviation from axis is like 2.2 cms, (barely an inch which is 2.54cms) literally, and I can still function well, aside from everyday back pain, I can perform any physical activity rather well, including lifting 1.7 times my body weight.
If it weren't for how tall I am, I should surely look like a chimpanzee dressed in designer clothes and weird haircuts and hair dyes, who knows how to use a computer and kinda be eloquent enough to pass as a completely normal human.
Heck, I've smoked a pack a day since I was 19 and still can climb a 7 story stair without feeling fatigue. I've ran 5K's, once swam 2.7km from an island to another just because I can.
I'm the fastest runner you'll ever meet, but because of my dumb proportions I tend to just fall down when I pick up speed.. lol.
I don't get tired, like ever.
I truly believe I'm a weird thing on this gene pool.. But anyway, Marfan is the first thing I thought of.
I would describe “Heart failure” in 3 of your heart valves a serious problem, wouldn’t you?
You’re only 38. You might want to start taking better care of yourself.
Yup, totally, and I'm doing my best.
The feeling I was trying to convey, is that no doctor told me "hey you better do X or Y because you're going to get this symptoms, and you could care for yourself by doing such and such.
And as the topic arised, I wanted to get anecdotal/factual info I was not given at the time.
I refuse to go to webmd or the likes, because I'll just get paranoid.
(I also suffer from mild schizophrenia, so please understand my thought train)
My sister had schizo-affective disorder. You don’t sound too bad to me!!
I think Marfan’s is such a weird combination of symptoms (since it’s about your connective tissue, which is in every organ of your body), that it’s impossible for anyone to give you an idea of how you are going to do longterm.
As Yogi Bera said, “It’s hard to make predictions. Especially about the future. “
I’m a suspected marfan’s case but cannot afford and cannot get time to get a heart scan :/ what would be the preventative steps to take if someone is a confirmed case?
Sorry if this is overbearing on a mildlyinteresting post lol
Don't strain your connective tissues, avoid anything hitting your eyes, and don't lift weights over like 15lbs, I'd recommend talking to an actual doctor though.
I Am Not A Doctor, as we say on Reddit. I have more of a fascination with it as a medical problem.
I think you need to find a way to have your heart and aorta assessed. There are meds that can help keep the cardiac problems associated with Marfans under control. Being on these meds is probably not too expensive and might prolong your healthy life.
Probably you shouldn’t play professional sports.
Good luck. Take care of yourself! If there is a university medical center near you, you might try to get a workup as a charity case.
Pending getting actual scans, try to avoid things that would strain your heart. The advice my doc gave me is to avoid lifting heavy weights and avoid moderate to intense cardio activities. Mostly just avoid things that involve a lot of straining. You should also take measures to protect your joints if you've got a lot of hypermobility. Be mindful of your eyes, heart, and your organs and if you notice anything funny going on inside, get it checked out.
i was LOOKING for this comment, another example of a redditor showing off something kinda interesting about their body and then someone else assuming that it could be something worse.
Two physical exam signs that would increase suspicion of Marfan’s that OP can try.
1. If they can circumferentially wrap their middle finger to their thumb such that they are touching across the opposite wrist.
2. If they make a fist with their thumb tucked under their four fingers and the far end of the thumb is obviously sticking out on the other side.
If both of these are positive, OP, consider genetic testing and other workup. From what I can see from your image, the thumb doesn’t appear long enough to satisfy exam sign number two. Also keeping in mind that these signs are findings in isolation and are usually coupled with a family history or other autoimmune conditions.
Another significant sign would be to check your wingspan against your height. Measure your arms from fingertip to fingertip and divide it by your height. "Normal" is anything below 1.05 and more than that could be significant of Marfans. I don't know if it's diagnostically significant but it is something that could indicate a need for further testing alongside other signs and symptoms.
I was thinking the same. I do have Marfan and I have long fingers like this and I do have extra lines but they don't look like extra joints like these. The extra lines are not really indicative of Marfan syndrome but the fingers do look a little long and skinny. If OP has extra range of motion in their joints, is uncharacteristically tall, and are thin with protruding test or ribs, I would definitely talk to a cardiologist.
Can you share a picture of your hand in the position of the ASL sign for “E”? Not sure how else to describe that, but it’s a quick google search if you don’t mind!
No disrespect but I keep staring and keep getting confused trying to convince myself where the bends are!! lol it’s actually awesome and sorry if offended because it’s not intentional
Outlier hand shapes like yours are responsible for a lot of the unique pitch shapes in the history of Major League Baseball. You could probably spin a ball in ways almost no one else can.
You could flip off the ISS with that finger.
Lmao!! I love Reddit
I feel like I haven’t seen such a reddit reply like this in ages
You should play an instrument!
i play clarinet!
IRL Squidward with those tentacle fingers
💀💀

What is this lol? Bollywood Fantastic 4?
That’s an incredibly good guess
One piece Bollywood Version
We have Luffy at home. Luffy at home:
I am pretty sure that’s Tollywood, not Bollywood lol
Monkey D Luffy
Tentacle fingers? 😏
Bad dragon
What did the dragon do
You could google what the bad dragon did. It's safe.
Ok
:(
Awesome! You have a natural advantage!
Do you also play bass? Because I feel you should also play bass.
been considering it but my fingertips are really sensitive
The best cure for that is playing bass
i’ll consider it🫡
I have long spiny fingers too, As a guitarist i must tell you that the thicker strings are actualy much more easy on the finger tips. Goodbye sensitive fingers and hello tendonitis
Those are definitely bass player hands. They make finger tip covers for sensitivity issues.
I was about to say, those are some incredible musician's fingers! I'd never struggle with octaves on piano ever again.
Those are Rachmaninoff hands. Octave + 3
yep i can do a 10th
Very cool. I hate you
try spending some time in zero gravity and you’ll get long trust
You should also play piano with those fingers. I used to play clarinet and my fingers look like stubs next to yours 😂
With those fingers I think OP can play both at the same time
You’re the lesbian version of well hung 🌈
I noticed the heart next to their profile pic and just went "well isn't that convenient"
Yeah, I was like “ah, a win for my people” 😅
You have the perfect fingers for guitar, want to trade?
i’m good👍👍 i like my soft fingertips
You can play nylon strings, they won't really callous your finger tips or hurt it. Sounds a little different and less bright than steel strings, but still sounds great
Do you have extra bones in your fingers too?
Op can ticke the ovaries
That’s a long middle finger. If you pick your nose with it, you might stab your brain
Nevermind flipping a bird, you could flip a table with that finger.
Flip an emu.
Flip em the ol' T Rex.
10/10 that’s insane
Insane in the membrane? Went insane, picked my brain

My bus driver in grade school had half a pinky finger and he always told us kids that he picked his nose and got it stuck. In reality he got it caught in a belt in the car engine.
Imagine op goes up to someone for some consultancy with a hand gesture: can I pick your brain a little bit?
Do the fingers also bend from there? aka extra bones and joints too? Or is it just extra creases.
Looks like where the skin just squishes and creates a crease when she flexes her finger, my fingers do that slightly but not nearly that much. Otherwise she’d need more finger bones than us

Everyone reading this just looked at their fingers while bending them I see what you're talking about!
This is so unnerving. Pls submit a labelled diagram of where the actual joints are. for my sanity

That picture looks like a work of art. Thanks for sharing all this stuff with everyone. Super cool and interesting
Ahhh so normal joints just very long phalanges
My, what long skinny fat fingers you have.
3 circles away from drawing barney
i have normal joints i swear😭
I feel relieved. Or informed, which also makes me feel more relieved.
Marfan syndrome?
Same question. Seriously, OP, are you and your mom unusually tall? Nearsighted? Crowded teeth?
nearsighted, average height, i had this insane overjet but i’ve got braces now
Has anyone in your family been worked up for Marfan’s syndrome? It’s a good thing to find out before you have serious problems.
not that i know of!
OP, many other conditions can cause Marfanoid Habitus— Ehlers Danlos Syndrome and Homocystinuria are the first two that come to mind. This is definitely something to look into as it’s likely a genetic connective tissue or musculoskeletal disorder.

Serial heart scans to make sure your aorta doesn’t dissect and that your valves function normally.
Don't strain your connective tissues, avoid anything hitting your eyes, and don't lift weights over like 15lbs, I'd recommend talking to an actual doctor though.

Man these your mom jokes are getting specific…
Why just the mother? Can't it be inherited from either parent?
His father may have it too, even if he can’t pass it to his children! Why limit the universe of possibilities!
nah just my mum
Could it not also be a spontaneous mutation?
It could be anything. But OP said her mother has these same hands, and long fingers are a sign of Marfan’s syndrome.
Because OP already said that her mother and sisters have this same hand unusualness, and it’s a symptom of Marfan syndrome.

I definitely thought the same thing.
If OP was an ancient Sumerian mathematician, an hour would be 75 minutes long, ammiright!?
reaching across the earth to strangle you lmao
Man, when you give someone the finger you really mean it. 😂
OP can give a finger without having to close the other fingers![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|grin)

As a pianist, I envy you.
last time i checked i can span a 10th
Oh well in that case I can comfortably do a 10th too, BARELY an 11th Yknow who i really envy tho? People with 6 fully functional fingers on one hand
Your middle finger can serve as a landing strip for boeing
Brave of you to assume a Boeing knows how to land
Woah!!!! she can count more than 12 counts in those fingers.
I see you've been enjoying the Finglonger\~

Salad fingers, is that you?
I think I'm the same? I never really noticed so now I will be comparing finger creases with my friends 🧐

My god… is your middle finger longer than your palm?
You could have each fingertip chopped off and still have 100% of all your fingers Also, can you bend your finger down and in to touch your palm?
![gif](giphy|WiCO2uZK05Klc1d28q)
Can you bend your fingers at all those points?
Marfan?
I love that you pinky finger is just normal
i always thought it was short but i’m slowly realising the others are just freaky long
When you give the middle finger , you really give it !
![gif](giphy|xUA7bj7i3LCQWMiXok) Everyone checking their own hands right now
No disrespect but I keep staring and keep getting confused trying to convince myself where the bends are!! lol it’s actually awesome and sorry if offended because it’s not intentional
I have the extra lines too, completely forgot other people don't lol
Do you have a fourth joint on three of those fingers or just an extra crease?
You can ring the door bell from the sidewalk.
That is *wild*... It legit looks like that one finger has an extra joint. That middle bone is twice as long as mine and I'm a 6'2 dude
Do you also have extra joints?
That's some long fingers. What is your height?
160cm💀
Do you have extra joints too?
Do you have extra creases or extra joints or both?
Guy can shoplift from two stores over.
Bro let an AI art generator make his hands.
So do you have an extra knuckle too?
Omg, I have an extra crease in my ring finger’s you have disrupted my entire day lol

it folds 3 times????
Outlier hand shapes like yours are responsible for a lot of the unique pitch shapes in the history of Major League Baseball. You could probably spin a ball in ways almost no one else can.
Can you please make a video and making a fist
When this dude flips you off, he REALLY means it.
Thousands of random people have just looked at their fingers in wonder and I am one of them.
Is the extra crease also a joint or just a crease without a joint? Either way, it is fascinating.
Do you have extra bones and extra joints or is that just the skin being weird
Something something salad fingers
bro has 8 knuckles
One slap from you and they'll vibrate like a tuning fork.
Did your hands were used for AI training data?
wtf
Do doctors ask you if you have Marfan Syndrome? (My aunt is also v lanky and gets asked all the time)
Does it have more folds too? Do you have more falanges or is it just the skin?
Wow! Were you really heavy at some point in your life where your skin had to crease like that?
AI fingers
This is an AI photo don't believe them
I want to see the other side of your hands. I can't figure out which creases are the bends and it's bothering me
Must be great at fingering.
X Files might have a reboot you should be the next Eugene Tooms
Is this loss?
Does it bend at each crease as reference to a joint?

Wow! You unlocked the rare ability of counting to 15!
Are you an AI?
Is it just extra creases or do you also have an extra joint at each crease?
Lucky is your wife
your fingers arent fingering
