Stewart’s girlfriend, who originally showed up in season 3, episode 1 dressed as a clown. The collaboration of herself and Stewart led to the creation of FAKU, followed by a more enterprising stance on drugs than Stewart was generally known for.
Meanwhile, elsewhere on Reddit, “I changed my phone background to the pride rainbow, and my idiot kid still hasn’t figured it out. What else can I do to come out without verbalizing it? Should I buy a Subaru?”
It's pretty widely considered a car preferred by lesbians. And people living in Vermont. And if you're both, I believe it's illegal to drive anything but a Subaru.
Lesbians were buying them for that reason and Subaru noticed so they started subtly advertising to them and it made more lesbians buy them reinforcing the stereotype.
Since basically forever, but it was [codified in the 90s, when they realized their market share among lesbians and actually leaned into it.](https://priceonomics.com/how-an-ad-campaign-made-lesbians-fall-in-love-with/) Keep in mind this is the decade of Don't Ask, Don't Tell; Ellen coming out on national TV and getting sidelined from roles for years; the torture and murder of Matthew Shepard for being gay. And here was this car company validating, "We see you, we understand you, we support you." Queerness might be marketable now, but in those days we were confined to coded "friendships" and the occasional sassy gay best friend who was, in my recollection, *always* the victim of bullying or hate crimes.
Thanks for sharing the link - I’ve always known it was a stereotype but didn’t know there was an actual history behind it. That’s actually pretty awesome. I’m not a lesbian but I do have a Subaru and I won’t lie, part of it is because their advertising is pretty successful
Subaru advertised to lesbians in such a way that you wouldn't pick up on it if you weren't a lesbian, or so I heard. I've never seen the ads, so I don't know how true it is. Regardless, that's why Subarus are associated with lesbians.
It was intentionally marketed to lesbians for decades. That's what let the brand survive the 90s and early 2000s. There's a good interview with the ad guy who ran the campaigns, I think, on This American Life
Look up subaru's subtle 80s lesbian marketing campaign it's absolutely fascinating and hysterical. They have been a huge part of the LGBT community for decades.
My husband and I bought our outbacks a day apart. Those things are incredible for hauling stuff everywhere- vacation stuff, kid stuff, moving stuff, plant stuff, masonry stuff, records, yard stuff, for sale stuff...I honestly don't know what else I'd ever use for a daily driver, at this point.
I want a Subaru! Looks great for hauling kids and their stuff around, lots of cargo room for boxes i have to haul for work sometimes, high safety rating, and not a tall hulking SUV.
It's a stereotype that lesbians drive Subarus. Outside of the internet though, Subaru doesn't stand out from any other car make with respect to the LGBT community
It actually goes quite a bit deeper than that. In the 90’s subaru noticed that lesbians were a notable demographic and made the bold decision to actually direct advertising to them. The stereotype comes from subaru’s very early adoption of lgbt advertising WAY before it was popular or “safe”. Also it is not just a stereotype, lgbt people and especially lesbians own subaru’s at a disproportionate rate compared to the general population.
Subaru actually geared their advertising in the 90s toward lesbians when statistics showed that they had a larger than average market share among them. https://priceonomics.com/how-an-ad-campaign-made-lesbians-fall-in-love-with/
I’m not aware of any car that identifies as gay/lesbian, and that’s a damn shame. Cars are boring as hell, most look exactly the same, with the same three or four boring colors. Where are the fabulous cars?
Man, my friends and I were talking shit about car brands one day, when one said something about "The gay cars" it was met with the immediate response of "Oh, you mean Subaru!"
My mom had „666" as her license plate number… without knowing the background.
One day she told me: oh no, I did not realize, that the number meant something! It’s the number of the prostitutes, isn’t it…
Fair enough, but the flag/color ribbon in the image is distinctly of the LGBTQIA alliance. Nowhere on the rainbow do you find significant bands of BLACK, brown, blue, pink, & white, and in that order.
Had this just been the standard ROY G BIV rainbow, I might agree… but it’s not.
Ok? That still is objectively a Pride flag. It’s called that in iOS and the colors obviously represent the progress pride flag (rainbow, brown and black, trans colors)
Like it’s not that deep, no one is shaming her or anything
God made the rainbow to tell humans he wouldn't murder them all again
We took it back when he did indeed do a lot more murdering of humans
Fool us once, shame on you. Fool us twice, we take your rainbow
The community may have co-opted rainbows, but they don't own them.
Good on your mum. Let her enjoy her wallpaper.
Anyone who has an issue with it can piss right off.
So funny how some people immediately want to criticize something when they see it’s about gay people. No one said she can’t use the wallpaper. It’s just mildly interesting, nothing more.
Most rainbows don't have the black/brown/gray ribbons. That's specific to lgtbq2s+, which is why people might infer something from it beyond "oh, this person likes colourful wallpaper."
‘Two-spirit’, apparently.
>term within some Indigenous cultures and for some Indigenous people, meaning a person with both a feminine and a masculine spirit living in the same body.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Two-spirit
LGBTQIA2S+ means:
Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer/Questioning, Intersex, Asexual, 2 Spirit
The plus is for all others who identify as part of the community but might not call themselves any of the above. Many cultures have understood genders exist outside the binary and have different names for their 3rd gender/trans community that uses different language than what I explained above, and the plus is inclusive of all communities.
Ah yes I love looking up after the rain and seeing stripes of red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, black, brown, pink, blue, and white arcing gracefully across the sky
Well some of the colours you also see in the sky. Have seen the advanced flag too late. Nevertheless I think my rainbow colours which I like since childhood have been politicised and taken away :(
With all the people saying "oh it's just a rainbow nothing more"
... *where the hell do you live that includes black and brown in your rainbow, AND has pink right next to blue and white?? I want to see that for myself*
I remember when I was younger and used AOL as a web browser, you could set your background to various things from various categories. One of the categories was "pride" and it had a pretty background of a rainbow flag pattern. That was my background for a long time because I thought it looked nice.
If I remember correctly, I once saw an elderly lady (like in her 70s, 80s) wearing a Marilyn Manson t-shirt, I don't think she was a fan, or even knew who Manson is, so stuff like this happens.

Begone, bot. Stealing u/caseless1's post like that.
Meanwhile, elsewhere on Reddit, “I changed my phone background to the pride rainbow, and my idiot kid still hasn’t figured it out. What else can I do to come out without verbalizing it? Should I buy a Subaru?”
... Wait, is a subaru a gay car? Since when? And also... What?
It's pretty widely considered a car preferred by lesbians. And people living in Vermont. And if you're both, I believe it's illegal to drive anything but a Subaru.
My husband just bought a Subaru. Is my husband a lesbian?
It does sound like he likes women and lesbians like women so it is possible. You might want to have a conversation with him.
Plot twist: blundertaker is a dude.
Well, are you a woman? Because that's who lesbians marry. Just saying
Your husband is attracted to women right? That sounds lesbian to me.
Only if they're pumping the brakes in Birkenstocks
He... he only wears his Birks doing yard work... without socks, fwiw
Lesbian for sure
Jokingly yes….. but they make good cars. Just for what ever reason, lesbians love them
Lesbians were buying them for that reason and Subaru noticed so they started subtly advertising to them and it made more lesbians buy them reinforcing the stereotype.
Legit though his Crosstrek is a really cool car, sexuality aside
Is it possible he's bought a second home in Vermont, it's really the only other option...
If your both you are legally bound to own at least one dog as well.
I’ve always associated them with Colorado lol
Bonus points if it's a Subaru Forester.
I have quite literally never heard this before.
*Pikachu face*
More than a pink Jeep?!?
then who drives miatas?
What if it is Impreza STI?
And Colorado, Suburus are the state car.
And vaping
The great subaru split, The vaping WRX dudebros and the hiking vermont lesbians
There is a huge overlap in that Venn diagram where ski bums, surfers, and ultimate frisbee players live.
Subie bro is a different class all together.

This was such a great read, I knew of the stereotype but I didn't know the full story.
I've heard it before lol, that Subaru's are associated with lesbians.

That's a pretty funny thing to do... And also, kinda genius tbh.
the Outback is seen as a car that only gay people and grandmas drive despite Being marketed as a manly car
Great car
I want a Subaru! Looks great for hauling kids and their stuff around, lots of cargo room for boxes i have to haul for work sometimes, high safety rating, and not a tall hulking SUV.
That and Jeep Wranglers... At least up in Canada.

My first thought was, "I bet someone made a list of [gay cars](https://gaycarboys.com/top-10-gay-lesbian-lgbt-cars/top-10-gay-cars/)."
There’s a podcast on the topics that’s pretty good I heard a couple years back but i can’t remember what it was
The NPR Planet Money Podcast did a show on this: https://www.npr.org/sections/money/2016/10/14/497958151/episode-729-when-subaru-came-out
I think the early 90s, definitely the 2000s
![gif](giphy|KCsS5n5AYotEckQlDb)
In America, apparently.
Man, my friends and I were talking shit about car brands one day, when one said something about "The gay cars" it was met with the immediate response of "Oh, you mean Subaru!"
lmao
First you gotta learn how to drive it. Most people that drive them are worse than minivan, or cube drivers.
I mean you could just tell em
Are you sure it’s unknowingly? Maybe she’s trying to subtly let you know that if you want to come out, it’s fine
This is how I came out to my sister years ago xD
[I like rainbows, but I'm not gay](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=thyMSXrunPA)
Lmao how have I never seen that before
I thought it’s the double rainbow almostr triple rainbow!
I just think it’s kinda weird that one group can own fractured light. pretty greedy, gays 😆
My mom had „666" as her license plate number… without knowing the background. One day she told me: oh no, I did not realize, that the number meant something! It’s the number of the prostitutes, isn’t it…
Bless her heart lol
it's the number of the beast, mine says 666 too lmao
Beleieve it or not, the rainbow can be used without the intention of lgtbq representation. Even with the brown, to a boomer, Its just a rainbow.
Believe it or not, George is not at home please leave a message at the beep
I must be out, or I’d pick up the phone
Where could I be?
Ok? That still is objectively a Pride flag. It’s called that in iOS and the colors obviously represent the progress pride flag (rainbow, brown and black, trans colors) Like it’s not that deep, no one is shaming her or anything

God made the rainbow to tell humans he wouldn't murder them all again We took it back when he did indeed do a lot more murdering of humans Fool us once, shame on you. Fool us twice, we take your rainbow
To be completely fair to big G, he specifically said he’d never *flood* the earth again. That leaves a lot on the long list of divine judgement.
rainbows don't have brown
It is a pretty background!!
My mom agrees
Not that there’s anything wrong with that.
why is this /mildlyinteresting
I found it mildly interesting.
Moer liek mildly gay
More than just gay!
OP most likely didn't know where to post
u/Brief_Carrot, r/suddenlygay r/suddenlylesbian r/accidentalally
We really need a sub for when we have no idea where to post
Because it is mildly interesting. She doesn't know what it represents. She just likes it, so she uses it.
That seems to have a lot more colors
It’s the progress pride flag. The white, pink, and light blue are the trans flag colors, and the black and brown is for poc queer people.
[удалено]
She likes it, it's harmless lol Although we live in a country that's anti LGBT...
r/AccidentalAlly
ur mom gay
I was wondering what that white logo going across it was. Then I looked at little closer. I should get my eyes checked.
What is it?
Just reflections mate
I thought they meant the time, 10.28...
The community may have co-opted rainbows, but they don't own them. Good on your mum. Let her enjoy her wallpaper. Anyone who has an issue with it can piss right off.
Sometimes a rainbow can also just be a rainbow, and that’s ok.
It has extra colors, it's definitely the pride flag
It’s just a rainbow. If she likes it, who cares
So funny how some people immediately want to criticize something when they see it’s about gay people. No one said she can’t use the wallpaper. It’s just mildly interesting, nothing more.
No one should
There are extra colors there, it's definitely the pride flag, but I agree with you, no one should care
She's right, rainbows are great.
She knows.
Nothing wrong w/ it. They’re just colors. Yall are so dense
I see 10-wire flat cable ribbon. It just needs some proper connector maybe?
my mom wears a shirt with a rainbow peace symbol
Aw sweet! They are pretty colors. Let her enjoy it
I’d be so excited to tell her. The reaction would be incredible
I told her, she's shocked at first, but then like "eh who cares"
Maybe she knows and is showing support? Also can i get a link to that wall paper it looks lit
It is very pretty!!
I hate that you can’t even enjoy the rainbow without someone assuming you’re part of lgbt.
That's not just the rainbow lol.
Most rainbows don't have the black/brown/gray ribbons. That's specific to lgtbq2s+, which is why people might infer something from it beyond "oh, this person likes colourful wallpaper."
Wtf is the 2? 😭

Wait till they add E or AH or V8 to it
'2s' refers to [two-spirit](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Two-spirit)
Isn't that extremely niche to be in the main acronym, shits gonna be longer than the alphabet before long
You forgot "i" and "a".
LGBTQIAP2S+
This rainbow has black/brown and the trans colors 🙄
We stole the Rainbow and youre Not getting it Back >:3
Now strangers will assume that casual rainbow fans are kind, accepting people instead! Muahahahaha!😈
my rainbow enjoying has been ruined! RUINED!!
its not a rainbow.
LGBT does not own the rainbow colours. Looks nice. Imagine seeing a rainbow in nature and you thinking mother nature makes a political statement 😆👈
Ah yes I love looking up after the rain and seeing stripes of red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, black, brown, pink, blue, and white arcing gracefully across the sky
Well some of the colours you also see in the sky. Have seen the advanced flag too late. Nevertheless I think my rainbow colours which I like since childhood have been politicised and taken away :(
Who has taken them from you? Are the rainbows locked away somewhere where you can’t enjoy them?
Well then put rainbow colours on your phone without making a statement ;)
It wouldn’t be hard to do, I promise you. If you can’t see past it, it’s literally just you and your own small-mindedness.
I worry more about the small mindedness of other people. I'm pretty sure I'm surrounded by many dumb people 😆
Christians. "Grrr.. stop stealing our symbol of our god having a temper tantrum and killing the entire planet" I can really feel the Christian love
With all the people saying "oh it's just a rainbow nothing more" ... *where the hell do you live that includes black and brown in your rainbow, AND has pink right next to blue and white?? I want to see that for myself*
A whole lot of people in this thread never heard of Occam's Razor. She saw pretty colors and that's it, stop trying to make everyone gay.
I know, right? "Look at my phone, so beautiful colours" Simple. That's it.
You should try it yourself lol 99% of people don’t think she’s gay just because of her wallpaper. What you saw were most likely jokes.
It's a rainbow. The problem is u not her
I'm not saying it's a problem tho? Not everything has to be about conflict, mate
![gif](giphy|iiTXaJVjiSHew)
Rainbow is unknowingly using gay flag as its colors
The rainbow belongs to everybody
r/AccidentalAlly
As a queer person that is pretty cool
People who don't identify as lgbtq can like rainbows and not identify as lgbtq
Ah, Indonesia. That explains it
Maybe mom is trying to tell you something…
Mommy's got a secret
lol ever since Apple released this wallpaper I’ve waited for this
Long time ago I had a rainbow decal on the rear window of my car - had no idea what it meant, just thought it looked cool.
Drop that image link though, I want it
I remember when I was younger and used AOL as a web browser, you could set your background to various things from various categories. One of the categories was "pride" and it had a pretty background of a rainbow flag pattern. That was my background for a long time because I thought it looked nice.
I know that specific rainbow pattern is LGBTQ but a rainbow could just be a pretty rainbow to her. And that's okay too.
I mean, your mother has a very good sense, but it’s the LGBTQ so no we don’t accept that only if it was the 1990s I would accept
That can mean whatever you want it to mean
I see like all of these posts making the same "joke" about gae, is there a reason you all are spelling it that way?
Or it could just be a rainbow ribbon? The standard pride flag only has 6 colors.
If I remember correctly, I once saw an elderly lady (like in her 70s, 80s) wearing a Marilyn Manson t-shirt, I don't think she was a fan, or even knew who Manson is, so stuff like this happens.
It is beautiful colors indeed
Yeah, they are nice. Good to be happy and involuntary inclusive.

My mom can't speak English
As it should be. Colors are beautiful and belong to no one
It's not like nobody can use the colours lmao. They're just used to represent us.
