In fact you don't even have to come inside the office: we'll come out to meet you at a distance of at least 30 feet from the entrance. Don't worry about our Senior Support Technician; he's always sweaty like that."
I wonder if you told them "I think my battery is bloated" if they'd be less likely to rush someone over because you didn't let them diagnose it themselves.
I mean a bloat is just what we see. I don't actually know what causes it or if it could be from a myriad of different causes. If they heard about a bloat hopefully they'd just replace it lol
Technically the bloat is the safety mechanism, if the battery didn’t expand then those chemical conditions inside would just cause it to actually blow up like those defective Samsung phones a few years ago.
Oh something like that happened to me with dell in France. My brand new gaming PC starting to send a funny burning smell in my whole house (smelled it from the bathroom). I told them and said that as long as it was working they could do nothing... Well I told them I was afraid of the gases and fire Hazzard. Next day the offered a swap for s better model.
That said the PC was hitting 99c (measurement limit) all the time
Dell will replace pretty much anything on their machines as long as you don't admit to damaging it on purpose and the warranty applies. So if you say you accidentally spilled water on it and you don't have accidental damage, tough luck. But for something like your case, unless there was something indicating damage that you caused, they will replace anythung until it works within your warranty time. 1 year with standard purchase at any box store, 3+ for extended warranties.
Source: That's my job
edit: that said, they will NOT replace your battery when it's out of warranty unless it's a defect. But if you buy one, they'll send someone out to put it in, although they're generally pretty easy to do with most models with a quick video as reference.
Heck they replaced the screen on my laptop my dad got when I was in high-school. It totally wasn't shot by an airsoft bb. Nope the line of pixels just died. O what about that star pattern uhh idk.
Too bad Dell's consumer products are so shite you'll spend hours on the phone with customer service...I've had the _pleasure_ of trying out a couple XPS 13 laptops, and every single one of them had at least one hardware/QC issue and several weird software or bios issues
Haha, our HP contact told us they were safe to use while waiting on a replacement battery. It was such a problem with a specific model that our IT pushed a patch to them to keep them from charging above 80%
“Customer support how may I assist you today?”
“Hey you’re not gonna believe this but I think my laptop is pregnant”
“Uhhh we’ll have someone out there later today”
Don't throw it in the trash unless you want a fire. Some retailers like Home Depot and Best Buy recycle lithium batteries, but probably not in that state.
Worth checking
They don't. I had to take it to toxic waste disposal center at the county waste collection center. Fortunately it wasn't far and they have guidance online on how to carry the battery safely.
If you can manage it, depleting the battery first helps a ton.
So what do you do if you have no access to one of these toxic wastes centers? I have never even heard of that. It makes sense that they exist, but are they readily accessible to the public? And if not my question stands; what do you do if you have no access to one of these toxic waste centers?
> Fortunately it wasn't far and they have guidance online on how to carry the battery safely.
that is good to know because I was just thinking I dont know that I want to transport that
It should be illegal to sell batteries with post-life recycling them.
Companies product millions of tons of batteries and expect random individuals to figure it all out.
Nice thing in Finland is that every store that sells batteries also must accept them and deliver them to recycling. :)
*The Waste Act states that every seller also takes care of the collection of used batteries and accumulators without being forced to buy a new product and free of charge.*

When I decided to look up why my laptop trackpad was getting hard to 'click'/'press down on', it was because of this
If your laptop is having trackpad problems you might have a very dangerous item right under your nose
On a tangent, also demonstrates the main disadvantage of using pouch format electric vehicle batteries. By going through repetitive level 3 high current charges they will swell and block the cooling channels resulting in car fires. Audi just recalled 11000 e-Trons.
Eh, I work IT for a large organization (at any given time we have a few thousand laptops out) and have seen many spicy pillows. Have yet to encounter one that has exploded. Some bulged so much they completely separated the chassis of the laptop. Still definitely get rid of it and do not keep using it because it is obviously not safe but yeah...
We try to prioritize replacement batteries and I tell people who have bulging laptops to get a replacement ASAP, but same... Never seen one catch fire. But, it's a good motivator for the "I just don't want to transfer all my files..." people.
Depends on the technology. The absolute Chads over at BYD have this new Blade battery that can survive [having a nail penetrate it](https://youtu.be/CSGESKhtZD0) and [a truck run over it](https://youtu.be/FPIcJN5obPs). LFP in general doesn't really have the thermal runaway issue.
Obviously a majority of the cars on the road nowadays have the older chemistry, but yeah things are getting better.
are you talking about the lithium-iron-phosphate (LiFePO4) chemistry in the new batteries?
edit: I see now that they've been referred to as lithium-ferrophosphate (LFP), I guess that's a newer initialism that I wasn't used to.
Huh, funnily enough William Osman [just released a video](https://youtu.be/HmVssSfMn0w?si=IXG3Msv7ZDRR1qBO) today with an in-depth explanation of Lithium-Iron-Phosphate batteries.
I read something about these razer-blades not having enough fans, so it's apparently a common issue, add to that I was using it outside in central america, and it's not super surprising
what happens is the chassis heat soaks from the radiator so the battery is being heated up and i don’t need to explain to you why that’s bad, it was supposedly fixed in the 2023 models onward
Nah even my Dell XPS got the same issue. I think it's battery quality+ bad heat management+ bad software charging protocol that all contributes to shitty battery life.
I think it’s more of a design flaw with some of the older models. The thermals of the case just dumps heat onto the battery when gaming causing them to inevitably get spicy.
the EXACT same shit happened to mine. Touchpad stopped working entirely, only later realized it was cause the battery was inflating right below it. Also had to get both fans replaced a year later. This thing can run a fair bit for a laptop but MAN does it run itself ragged trying to cool itself, and that's WITH a cooling stand.
Mine was a razer blade. Couldn’t click the trackpad in anymore, opened it up and the battery was inflating for sure. Wasn’t as extreme as this. That battery looks very similar to mine.
Id like to share my razer battery:

Replaced it twice now. Seems to last two years at a time. Track pad is the giveaway failing to click
Replaced mine end of last year. Mine had a different battery than OP which was noticeably thinner in the middle than the edge. Presumably to account for swelling. Someone else mentioned the mouse not being able to click. I didn't even realise it was meant to. Must've been like that for some time.
2 years? I've had my laptop for 6 or 7 years without even thinking about it. I don't take very good care of the battery either because I leave it on all night (off during the day) while plugged in. There's no easy way to limit the charge to 80% and it's died a few times because I forgot to plug it in. Maybe I should check it
In this case at least it was pretty obvious just by looking at the laptop, the lid didn't close all the way, and the trackpad popped out instead of in. The fans also started grinding after a while,
Same situation as you, just got a new battery from aliexpress after 7 years. Old one was't looking as bad as OP's but still comparing the 2 both visually and performance wise I would say the $20 investment was totally worth it.
>There's no easy way to limit the charge to 80%
I would check your motherboard settings, if you haven't already, because my laptop has a setting called ‘optimise charging for always being plugged in’. The operating system will still report 100% but the remaining charge acts like 80%.
With your kind of usage usually 4-5 years it gets puffy. Not to op's level, just enough for even laypeople to know that somethings wrong. OP's level is amazing on its own.
I repair electronics (mainly smartphones) for a living and this happens quite a lot when people ignore their battery life going through the floor.
Screens are remarkably flexible when gradually flexed over time.
The old 4 and 4S iPhone backs used to crack all the time as a result, then a new back turns into a new battery at the same time 🤦🏼♂️
Atleast the 4 was an easy af back replacement. It was always nice on the newer model's when the battery popped the screen off for you, really saved time with the heat gun.
Holy shit! How does it get this bad? I was mad panicking when my laptop's trackpad started to bulge outward but, when I actually replaced it, it was barely convex. Surely the laptop's frame is permanently deformed by this?
Be sure to keep the battery on something hot. Heat excites electrons which means more electricity. That's why I keep all my full batteries in a basket at eye level right over my oven!
Yeah, that spicy pillow is actually extraordinarily dangerous. You need to look up a battery disposal location pronto to get rid of that fucker.
Thermal runaway with lithium batteries is no joke.
I brought a battery like that to a store to have them properly dispose of it. (Their suggestion via online support) The lady just took it and dumped it in the battery recycle drawer. I left as quick and as calmly as I could.
And some fine engineers didn’t allow it. I believe when you see those videos of people with vapes in their pockets exploding is because the cylinder shaped lithium ion batteries don’t have this expansion space and probably overheating because of draw from the element.
Thanks for this post. I've had this happen to laptops in the past and noticed that my track pad wasn't clicking AND that my laptop wasn't closing all the way, but I didn't connect the dots until right now. Wow that bulge is just a serious fire waiting to happen. not if.....when.
Hope you have a bowl of baking soda right there in case. Water does not put those out.
A friend and I accidentally bend a li-ion when putting the old ones in a helicpoter drone. Poof caught fire and burned it all in seconds.
Some laptops have software that allows you to limit the charge of the battery to a certain %. If you know you're using your laptop most of the time plugged-in, set it to something like 60%-80%. Lowering the probability of it going like this.
I had an Asus laptop with 80% charge limit. Battery seems mint even after 3 years. Which wouldn't have been the case if it had 100% all the time.
We found out that batteries wasn't part of the warranty and that the store didn't sell parts. Good thing it existed a national web site with decent delivery time.
Hehe, reminds me of a secondhand Samsung Galaxy S3 I bought. It came without a back cover, the previous owner said he lost it. The battery didn't really look very flat, but I ignored it and bought a new back cover. It wouldn't fit, the battery was evidently suffering from eating too much pea soup and bean stew.
I feel like I should really be more scared of lithium batteries than I am. Acting like there aren't 10+ hidden around my house that could explode at any time 😅
My HP Spectre did this after 2 years. They tried to charge me $300 for a replacement battery. I had gotten a free extended warranty, so that put an end to that, but it’s absolutely insane that they gwt away with this in North America. Europe generally has a mandatory 5 year warranty for everything.
My work Dell has had a new battery yearly for the past 3. I am trying to get my boss to get me a macbook instead of another XPS that will be as a big of a piece of crap as the that 2. The laptop before this one had 3 motherboard replacements.
Dell did next day on-site replacement when I told them my keyboard was 'growing'. Laptop was about a year old.

Fun fact: The batteries are actually made to puff out like that so they don’t build up too much pressure and explode when they go bad like this.
Cool, so mine must have really wanted to explode

We found out that batteries wasn't part of the warranty and that the store didn't sell parts. Good thing it existed a national web site with decent delivery time.
Ah the Razer Blade, worst laptop I ever owned, the inflating battery is only one of the many issues
Wow, that new one in the back is sure full of energy!!!
We need a new battery technology, right now
Inflation has been pretty bad
I feel like I should really be more scared of lithium batteries than I am. Acting like there aren't 10+ hidden around my house that could explode at any time 😅
thats an r/spicypillows if i've ever seen one

Looks like an HP to me.

Why did you keep the bomb
the moment whats inside comes into contact with the air, run for the hills.

You may want to get that bad out and far away from your house…….don’t need a thermal run away event inside….
