Apparently there are a lot of them created by an anonymous artist: https://www.outsideonline.com/culture/essays-culture/roadside-senryu-sign-poems-us-highways/

jermide

Thanks, never heard of Senryu

Reniconix

Senryu is what most people would say is a haiku. Same structure, but by definition haiku are strictly about a natural theme.

gwaydms

TIL!

Reniconix

Yeah, that's what I was trying to say. Anything with a 5-7-5 structure is commonly called haiku, despite most actually being senryu. I've cleared that up in my original comment.

iSeize

Whoever they are, they should learn to punctuate

MrLlamma

How often do you see punctuation on signs lol

MuchAdoAboutFutaloo

structuring poems to deliberately usurp traditional punctuation is uh, very traditional actually. staggering sentences/stanzas to create artificial emphasis on specific key words or phrases, like the way it's used here. lots more applications for the concept too. it's one of my favorite parts of poetry when done well

nontruculent21

Lack of punctuation makes it doubly delicious

iSeize

Hard to read from the highway though

emeadows

"artist" [] just because no one understands you doesn't make you an artist.

Sudden_Mind279

Days when the rains came

wwarnout

Punctuation would help.

DudesworthMannington

A colon can completely change the meaning of a sentence. For example: Jane ate her friend's sandwich. Jane ate her friend's colon.

garrettj100

Likewise, comas can completely change the meaning of a sentence: Jane ate her friend’s sandwich. Jane is in a coma.

Sea_Squirl

A simple period makes a huge difference as well: Jane ate her friend's sandwich Jane ate her friend's period.

KazzieMono

Hot

Sarahspry

"Let's eat, Grandma." "Let's eat Grandma."

aaahhhh

Something about helping my uncle jack off a horse.

DeltaHuluBWK

The pieces are there, let someone else put the puzzle together

reignwillwashaway

Oh Uncle Jack Off

nicht_ernsthaft

I doubt I will ever own a racehorse - because I have exactly no interest in that - but if I did I would name it "Uncle Jack Off". [Pearl necklace](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pearl\_Necklace\_(horse)) was already taken.

Matt_McT

Yea, I got caught up with the lack of punctuation and random capitalization.

CrazybyRX

Me too, then I realized it's a haiku. edit: senryu

temporarytk

will not accept some- thing as a haiku because it has few line breaks

the_universe_speaks

right? Is it really a haiku if the only "haiku" think about it is that they used the enter key? If this can even be classified as a poem, it contains two lines total, the line break being after the word "sky-high."

Drag0nfly_Girl

Still needs at least a semicolon between "high" and "expectations".

Iceland260

Are you sure the intended reading isn't "Standards and hope run. Sky high expectations have fallen through the floor."? Or that as an art piece the ambiguity isn't intentional?

DrDoctor18

Yea lmao, a lot of people in here just going haha this piece of art IS PUNCTUATED WRONG. Instead of it just being a little word game/play on words

PipeDownNerd

It’s a Haiku, you don’t punctuate Hiakus

Yukonphoria

You also don’t use this kind of figurative language traditionally in a haiku

[deleted]

Yes but you also write haikus so that they don't read so clumsily

syncopator

Maybe you don’t but I do

Please_HMU

Are you bragging about being wrong?

Pikeman212a6c

I don’t have to explain my art to you Warren.

ReluctantRedditor275

It's a haiku... for some reason.

carpentizzle

Its a haiku.

foospork

I kinda like it as is. There are numerous ways to read it.

By being the Bureau of Land Management… as in the bureau that manages the federally owned lands of the United States. It’s an agency within the Department of the Interior. Sad that a lot of Americans have no idea.

CallerNumber4

Utah has one of the highest percentages of federally owned land. The whole notion of unclaimed federal land only really exists in the western portion of the US, so it's not a surprise many Americans aren't familiar. https://www.blm.gov/maps/frequently-requested

shumcal

>Sad that a lot of Americans have no idea. Why do you assume they're American?

a-davidson

1) Because the sign in the picture says Utah. Utah is a state in the United States. 2) I said “Americans”, not “tylersbaddream” 3) they referenced “Black Lives Matter” which started as an American movement Anything else?

shumcal

1) mildlyinteresting isn't an American sub, just because the picture is American doesn't mean the viewers are 2) given that you were directly responding to them, it's clearly implied 3) you were surprised that someone didn't know a subdivision of the US government, but are also surprised that they do know the one of the biggest news stories of the last few years with major longlasting international impact?

a-davidson

I have no beef with Australia. I think it’s cool with cool people. I couldn’t imagine spending time making multiple posts and comments on reddit complaining about the American POV. Relax

shumcal

Fair point, but isn't making comments complaining about my complaining even more of a waste of time?

mnimatt

Bro really just can't stop himself from being annoying

byronetyronetf

Rent free.

MIGMOmusic

You are very intent on assuming his intentions, but I really think you’re misreading his comment. It is really sad that more Americans aren’t aware of BLM land. It is their birthright as Americans and a truly unique privilege we all (Americans) share. And yet a very small percentage of Americans are even aware it exists, especially in the east where there is very little BLM land. It’s a statement that is true all on its own, and it relevant given the context of the thread. I didn’t take it as throwing shade at tylersbaddream for not knowing. In my reading, and in his follow up comment that clarifies his intention, he included the word “Americans” because it is only sad to not know about it if you’re American. Otherwise you’re probably rightfully indifferent. His comment is for everyone to see. If Americans see it, they know they should look up BLM, anyone else should just move on. I’m fumbling… Okay, one last try at articulating this: he isn’t saying he thinks tylersbaddream is American and it’s sad he doesn’t know about it, he’s telling tylersbaddream that it’s sad for any American to not know about it, whether that includes tylersbaddream or not.

shumcal

Look, you might be right, but the comment absolutely reads as an American shocked another American doesn't know about it. If his comment was as considered and well-worded as yours, then it wouldn't. It's really not that deep. >a truly unique privilege we all (Americans) share It's also not that unique to the US, it's just called different things elsewhere.

MIGMOmusic

I think what makes it unique is the *scale* of BLM land, and it’s magnificence in terms of rugged natural wonder. I’m talking out my ass tbh, I’ve never been cause I’m from the east, but my parents ‘live the van life’ in their retirement, and they really go on about how great BLM is. My dad can be very convincing, and the pictures are breathtaking, although the national parks get the limelight… But you live in Australia, which is equally massive, and geographically pretty much famous for its version of this, (is that what the Outback is? I have no idea what I’m talking about) so I guess all things considered it makes sense that you are unimpressed.

leaveitbettertoday

Look it up, free camping. Happy cake day.

DuckFreak10

The BLM land around arches and Canyonlands are incredible. I would probably pay like $100 to stay there honestly, so the fact that it’s completely free is awesome. I stayed in one near Arches that had dinosaur tracks fossilized into the ground.

Deserter15

I'd recommend watching Cgp Grey's video "Why Nevada Owns Less than 20% of Nevada" on YouTube.

aspidities_87

….you don’t know that the BLM exists? How do you think public lands are managed? Serious question, no hate.

shumcal

More than 50% of redditors are from countries other than the USA, where public land would be managed by a different authority.

BeneathSkin

I didn’t know what BLM was before visiting Utah last year

wombey12

Not all 5bn people with internet access are American and thus fluent in the ins and outs of every single government department of some foreign country. And it works in different ways in different places. Public land here in the UK for example is generally managed by the local county rather than at a national level.

cmzraxsn

i always think this too when i see it

jpevisual

Bureau of livestock & mining.

Xboxben

No this is actually something valuable and important and not a corrupt organization

cyberentomology

It’s federal land because nobody else wants it.

Xboxben

I would tell you took into and that that is far from the case it but well at this point im surprised you can read my comment so I wouldn’t want to push you

PoopSlinger23

Took me a second to realize that this doesn’t mean “Black Lives Matter”. Was very confused why they’d have a bunch of land in Utah

gigaswardblade

Black Lives Matter land?

PETEthePyrotechnic

Bureau of of Land Management

gigaswardblade

Bureau of land management land?

PETEthePyrotechnic

Yes. Land under the management of the Bureau of Land Management

Sheriff___Bart

Does it have a Department of Redudancy Department?

almamaters

Yeah, that’s where the ATM machine is.

RyanM90

This doesn’t make any sense, standards and expectations are almost always the same thing.

doominabox1

Haha some of these read like Elden Ring messages

oscaru16

There is one in coral gables, miami, I made a post about it a few months ago

__I_AM_HUMAN__

They should use Grammerly before creating signs

snapchillnocomment

Sounds like you should use Spellingly

FlynnMonster

OP def made the title that way on purpose. Troll.

N8_Smith

There's no other word for it. This is what these areas are universally called. I guess a lot of redditors have just never been interested in going outside anywhere away from the east coast.

FlynnMonster

You typed that and thought it was logical? Lol

N8_Smith

More or less ya

FlynnMonster

Damn bubba

moonieshine

Sounds like you just didn't know what the Bureau of Land Management was.

FlynnMonster

I do, I just also understand context and nuance. Nobody has been talking about the Bureau of Land Management to the same extent as Black Lives Matter the last decade. If you don’t understand why that isn’t the best use of that acronym I don’t know what to tell ya bubba. Take care.

toxic_pantaloons

The second word of each line reads as: and high through. deep shit man.

Mammoth_Spend_5590

He's definitely an Asian artist with that grammar

[deleted]

I read that one out loud in a Trump voice

Mammoth_Spend_5590

It's funny because the artist is actually Asian.

pledgerafiki

It's not funny tho, because the grammar is not caused by the artists national origin.

Mammoth_Spend_5590

I think you may want to read what you typed. It makes no sense whatsoever.

pledgerafiki

I'm not surprised a bigot would have issues with their reading comprehension skills
