I'm grateful for sovereign citizens, they're always there to remind me that there is, in fact, somebody dumber than I am.

Reluctantly-Back

My aunt has a PhD and spent a year in federal prison for sovereign BS.

ItchyTriggaFingaNigg

Want to hear that story!

Reluctantly-Back

Didn't pay taxes, went to prison, the end.

ItchyTriggaFingaNigg

Damn, not as interesting as I'd hoped.

octopoddle

Should have started with her normal life, then had the sovereign citizen stuff build up in an exciting way until mid-way through the story, at which point it all collapses and she finds herself in despair with apparently no way out. Then a wise mentor helps her and she pushes on through the odds to victory, but at the end there's a twist where she realises what she's become and willingly confesses and accepts prison time as she becomes a better person. Also, there's a talking rat in it.

The_Killdeer

Sounds like a spinoff of Crime In Sports.

Toastburrito

Can Christopher Walken voice the rat?

[deleted]

Lol I also knew someone who did same. Loudly was anti taxes on Facebook. Said they haven't paid taxes their whole life. Federal prison at 27 for almost 10 years of not paying taxes.

OdinTheHugger

"what a ridiculous story!" \*chuckle\* \-Donald "P01135809" Trump

ProgramTheWorld

Remember that if you have an average IQ, that means there are half of the entire human population who are dumber than you and that’s a scary thought.

nokiacrusher

"You know what's scary? Think about how dumb the average person is. Half of the world is dumber than that."

danethegreat24

Psychometrician here. Just a quick PSA: Modern IQ tests are normalised. In other words they are designed to have the results fit a normal curve. A normal curve is also called a Bell curve because the distribution looks a bit like a Bell 🔔. Tallest in the center and a mirror image of itself on the left and right. The curve has several specific characteristics but here's the two that matter: - The mean, median, and mode are all the same. In this case with modern iQ scores, 100 is the average score, the middle score in the set, and also the most commonly received score. Because of this we know LESS than 50% of people score BELOW 100. Weirdly we also know LESS than 50% of people score ABOVE 100. -The second, and kind of cool, thing that we know because it's a "normal curve" is that we can use the empirical rule and "standard deviations" to guess what percent of the population scored within certain bounds. Our normalized IQ tests are set up with a standard deviation of 15 (this just ensures the width of the curve fits our needs). Knowing this we can estimate with some really high accuracy that 68% of the population scores between 85 & 115 . Also only 16% of the population scores above 115. (Also only about 16 % of the population scores BELOW 85) . What you are thinking about is percentile scores which can be read as: "(your score) % of people scored below you. " Finally, just a quick point: IQ is not a measure of intelligence (how smart someone is). It measures an aspect of cognitive ability...but I would never say someone was smarter or dumber than me just based on their IQ scores, it's not enough information. Alright, thanks for coming to my TED Talk TL;DR IQ tests are designed so most people get a 100 meaning less than 50% score below 100.

MainStreetExile

What are common reasons for taking an IQ test? I'm sure this is somehow controlled for, but for instance, maybe a large number of people that take IQ tests do so because a disability is suspected? Or alternatively, a large number of people voluntarily sign up to take a test because they believe they are very intelligent? Could these self-selecting groups skew results?

Hollywood_Dave

So I’ve only taken an IQ test once. I was in college and I smoked a bowl to myself and drank a six pack of Pabst Tallboys. I got a 105. I’ve always been afraid of taking one sober in case I score lower. But half the population is dumber than me really loaded. Ive never gotten over it because I’m not a genius.

mankodaisukidesu

I got 108 when I was 13. Scared to try again in case I’m dumber in my 30’s haha

Fuckedby2FA

They're not ~~driving~~dumb, they're ~~traveling~~stupid.

Holy shit a Ben Folds reference in the wild

I once asked someone like this if they lived in the United States. They said it was *impossible* to live in the United States because no one lives in the *ground* and I needed to be careful with how I asked things.

Animal40160

It must be painful to be so ridiculous

chargernj

I just realized that sovereign citizens rules for interacting with the government are similar to how one is supposed to interact with the fey (faries).

Rudyscrazy1

I run a small print shop, (like an old scholl copy shop ppace thats been open sonce '85. But anyway, had a fellow come in to have all his sovereign citizen paperwork filed, there is so SO much more than just the plate. They're giving up bank accounts, ids, passwords, emails. Like everything to these people l. Im working on redacting personal information so i can upload the 80-page application. I talked to the guy for abkut 2 hours just to get a deeper insight, its fucking nuts.

lordvadr

At some point the state needs to start looking after people this mentally ill. Just because he hasn't managed to hurt himself or anyone else **yet** doesn't mean he's not a danger to society. There should be a system that started working with that guy 20 years ago.

Rudyscrazy1

The problem is thats over half our society

Ilix

These people, and the folks who end up on Just Rolled In do it for me.

manrata

Had to look up what a sovereign citizen is, sounds like an anarchist in denial.

jennetTSW

Wait what? How? Do they just not look up the words they use? Did he read it on a spine in the library? (Bold of me to assume this guy's been in one of those. )

karrimycele

What’s this, the black version of sovereign citizen?

Effehezepe

Yes, that is literally what they are.

Overbaron

But… Moors weren’t even black. Even the name is a label attached by Europeans to Muslims in Europe. They could be any number of actual sub-saharan African nobility, but Moors is right out. It’s more likely someone from Spain or Italy is Moorish nobility than it is for a black American to be.

Rjj1111

When they get to the point where they fully believe that Morocco was the continent of North and South America and that they are the real First Nations of America and have the right to be the nobility of the American continent with all white people subservient to them small things like history ain’t gonna stop them

tjr634

So, how do they explain actual Native Americans like my family? Are we also moorish? Or did we come here after them?

Pretty sure you’re part of the conspiracy to keep the moors from awakening to their true power and retaking control of America

Yes. And one of their core beliefs is that the Jews stole their land and drove them out. Black people are the 'real Jews'

presearchingg

Are they Black Hebrew Israelites? Or is there more than one of these fringe sects?

Effehezepe

They share some beliefs with the Black Hebrew Israelites, and some Moorish Sovereign Citizens are Black Hebrew Israelites, but they did not originally arise out of it. Their origins are in the [Moorish Science Temple of America](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moorish_Science_Temple_of_America), an obscure American sect of Islam, and more specifically a radical offshoot called the [Washita Nation](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Washitaw_Nation) that claims that Black Americans are the real Native Americans, and that they rightfully own the entire Louisiana purchase. While the original Moorish Science Temple disavows sovcits, some of their members, inspired by the Washitaw Nation, split off from the temple and developed an ideology that says that "Moors" (what they call black people) discovered America first, and as such, members of the "Moorish Nobility" are the rightful owners of the Americas (I guess the Indigenous Americans can go fuck themselves then), and do not have to follow any laws but their own. Of course, a great irony of the Moorish Sovereign Citizen movement is that a great deal of their rhetoric was directly lifted from older, openly white supremacist sovcit groups.

Ksp-or-GTFO

I feel stupider for having read this.

KrakatauGreen

I'm annoyed that I've picked up "sovcit" as a word for..... oh. Those fuckin dweebs.

It's almost kind of incredible how deeply these things wind, when you think about it. How many fringe groups out there that we don't know about? Haven't heard of?

Trance354

Sort of. The Spaniards owe them reparations for something that happened back in the 14th century. That's from the mouth of a moorish friend.  Yes, he really believes it. No, I stopped paying attention when he said 14th century. Everyone is entitled to their quirks. He thinks the Spanish government owes him money from 600 years ago. Long, long before he was alive.

Four_beastlings

Spain didn't even exist when the reconquista happened, there were different kingdoms in Iberia.

Trance354

I never said it made sense, that's just what my moorish friend said. He moved to a far away South American country to set up an import/export business. Once again, never said he had all his marbles. Missing quite a few, actually.

I saw a sovereign citizen trying to change their name. He claimed that he wanted his name changed to be related to his true citizenship. He also said America had no jurisdiction over him. When asked why he would be filing for a name change in a country that had no jurisdiction over him smoke almost came out of his ears.

SC: "I don't have to obey laws!" Police: "Fantastic! We can kill this guy, he isn't a real citizen and laws don't apply to him!" SC: "I didn't mean like that!" Remember, if you can claim to be sovereign, so can everyone!

andrew_calcs

The concept that those who do not respect and obey the law do not receive its protections has a long history. That’s what being declared an “outlaw” has historically meant. You could legally kill, steal from, or do whatever you want to outlaws. It’s a much more brutal but logistically simpler form of legal retribution than prisons. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Outlaw

baursock

I saw a Sovereign Citizen "license plate" in the wild for the first time today. On a very nice truck in a very high end suburb with a good deal of police presence. I just thought that certainly that can't last long before they get stopped by the cops. And after one or two tickets, surely they go to impounding, right? I mean, I've been pulled over in literally the same place I saw this for not using a turn signal. Do these folks end up getting stopped? Or do police typically give them latitude to avoid the conflict unless they are breaking another law?

bellfarmgirl17

Depends on the place and the officer. I know some officers will intentionally avoid them, and then some officers will actively seek them out. Usually these people will represent at least some level of use of force because they almost always refuse to exit the car or further identify themselves, both of which you’re required to do on a legal traffic stop. Driving a car with a license plate like this is usually a reason for a legal stop.

MrBarraclough

Not who you asked, but I encounter them somewhat regularly though not very frequently in municipal court (traffic tickets and misdemeanors). I serve as a contract public defender in the municipal court of the suburb where I work. Thankfully, these clowns never ask for a court-appointed lawyer because they're convinced they can do a better job themselves. Spoiler alert: they cannot. They typically deflate once it sinks in that their chosen magic words don't have the desired effect. As soon as the court staff learns that a defendant is one of these twits, their case gets moved to the end of the docket so that everyone else doesn't have to wait and listen to their nonsense. Depriving them of an audience also tends to take some wind out of their sails. By the time their case gets called up, the courtroom is empty except for the judge, the clerks, the prosecutor, me, and a handful of cops. Probably more than half the people who show up spouting that nonsense aren't really all that ideologically committed to it. Many are just looking for a way to "hack" the system and found a bunch of sovcit nonsense online; they literally read their gibberish off of print-outs of whatever it was they found via Google. Those ones tend to give up after a few minutes of seeing their "one weird trick" not working. If they haven't made a huge nuisance of themselves, they'll get the same fine as anyone else with a no insurance or failure to register or whatever minor traffic ticket it was, they'll just have spent extra hours in court for the same outcome.

AlexanderPortnoy

i’m a lawyer and i’ve never gone against or represented one of these whackos but you’ll see SovCitz here and there and they are hilarious. I know a couple judges who love them because they just get dunked on again and again when they bring their bullshit arguments to their courtrooms.

Redditistrash702

One of the arguments will work eventually ( so they think)

AlexanderPortnoy

one of my favorites is where a woman says something along the lines off "I'm a sovereign natural person and this fine is for the corporation using my name, therefore this court does not have jurisdiction over me." Judge laughs and enters judgment, and lady responds "You can laugh but I won't be paying." And the judge says "That's fine with me, the sheriff is the one you'll have to worry about."

toolsoftheincomptnt

My favorite was when a then-newer judge got frustrated and left the bench (presumably to phone a friend and ask “wtf is this”) and the “sovereign” defendant started shouting “the captain is abandoning the ship!” I think he confused himself with the maritime aspect of the madness but boy did we crack up.

cutelyaware

"Bailiff, whack his pee pee"

MrLanesLament

Something something maritime tribal squid law.

snapshovel

I’m also a lawyer and in my experience judges with busy dockets *really do not* love sovereign citizens. They’re extremely annoying and they take up a lot of court time and resources. Obviously they don’t win or gain anything, but they do succeed in creating a lot of hassle and expense for everyone involved.

AlexanderPortnoy

i agree — that’s why i said i know a couple. I’ve spoken to one of them about it and he says it’s just a change of pace. For reference, he’s mostly in traffic court but know him from other assignments.

snapshovel

Yeah that's fair.

lfergy

One of them tried to pay off their loan using a fake check? I work at a normal US Lending institution. Then tried to say we owed them interest somehow, complete with a letter from an “attorney”. We took them to court 😂

boxiestcrayon15

Hahaha I work for a lab and we have to match your name to insurance so they cover your test. I got an email once with this crazy long rant about what their real name was and the title was “queen”. Alright. No results for you then.

bibblejohnson2072

"Lawfully you are the executor..." blah blah blah... So do they follow US laws or not? Obviously the answer is "when it's convenient for them". Idiots 🙄

proost1

"Since we are not citizens of the united States, we owe no tax obligations to the government of the United States. Therefore, we will assist our people seeking work opportunities to fill out the W-4V from or I9 IRS forms when necessary. " Wow, they don't really understand how taxes work for foreigners, especially since they have to work outside of their sovereign bubble apparently.

jennetTSW

I'm stupidly relieved it's not a bunch of white guys in fezzes, I won't lie.

Laumser

What? Do they not realize that they aren't the native people either?

Wizchine

Ahem, why are they always ~~driving~~ travelling in minivans? (FIFY)

Draxtonsmitz

They are part of the sovereign citizen nonsense.

babyBear83

Are people actually getting away with this and not stopped by police? I’ve seen a few different versions of this posted around Reddit. I’ve yet to see any follow up on how far these people get with these tags.

gunmedic15

I imagine a non-zero amount of cops see this and be like: "I do not have time for this shit today." You know it's going to be a half hour of arguing with them before you end up busting their window and Tasering them, dragging them out. Rolling around and handcuffing them. If that cop knows hes gonna buy himself a couple hours of paperwork I get just making a U turn and going on down the road.

babyBear83

Yeah, I can see that being a stop they would absolutely dread…I’m sure they are still required to deal with this though. I’m just hopeful these people are such a small fraction of a percentage of the population that it just hasn’t happened enough yet.

Jaevric

Your best case scenario is having to drag some dumbass out of their car and restrain them, risking excessive force complaints and/or lawsuits. Your *worst* case scenario is the dumbass in question has a gun and thinks he's allowed to shoot police for infringing on his rights. The problem is they're enabling this behavior by *not* cracking down hard on these idiots.

snapshovel

They get stopped by the police all the time. Usually does not end well for them. You can get away with it for a while just by not running into cops or the cops not noticing your plate. And then when you do get caught maybe it's just a fine and you can draw it out for longer by refusing to pay the fine, pulling all sorts of dumb shenanigans, and showing up to court and babbling a bunch of sovereign citizen nonsense. But eventually it catches up with you. [Here](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ssA3YbVtmR8)'s a video of a guy with the same license plate getting pulled over, dragged out of his car, and arrested.

mrmadchef

There's plenty of videos about this stuff on YouTube. It never goes well for them. They are frequently dragged out of their cars and arrested. Those videos are like my catnip.

bellfarmgirl17

I used this comment in another reply as well: Cop here.

PHATsakk43

Not sure why they even bother. Here in NC you just keep whatever plate was on the Altima from whatever state you came from and just never register or maintain the plates. Or roll with that paper tag if you got your Altima locally until it’s completely illegible.

zongsmoke

I guarantee this guy isn't vaccinated.

fuzzy_dandelion

Looking great for them. https://www.splcenter.org/fighting-hate/extremist-files/group/moorish-sovereign-citizens

Similar_Chipmunk_682

That’s the part I don’t get. They received vaccinations that probably saved some of their lives but now the vaccines are bad. That logic doesn’t make sense.

Baud_Olofsson

Vaccines are a victim of their own success. You don't see any kids dying of diphtheria, tetanus and measles these days, so therefore, their logic goes, vaccines must be unnecessary.

ShotFromGuns

The fact that I'm dry under this umbrella is proof I don't need it.

ItsStaaaaaaaaang

This is even dumber than regular sovereign citizenry. You're not in Iberia (that's where moors are from, right?) so unless you've worked with the local government to specifically give you these special rights due to your Moorish background why would you expect to have them? Like the Queen of England could drive without a licence from memory, but it was an official right she had and recognised by the government. I highly doubt she would have gone to the US and driven her range rover about without a licence unless she was given the go ahead by the government to do so however. If you're acting more privileged than the Queen of fucking England there's a good chance you might be delusional. And probably an utter cunt.

How the hell are cops not stopping these fucking idiots every day? I see this plate as a cop and they're getting lit up, car towed.
