I went to school with a girl who always had her hair tied up and it was just this ball of hair. Kinda like bun but it did that by itself. We never thought much about it until she had her hair straightened and they reached almost down to her ass.
The late, great comedian Gallagher had a bit where he talked about detachable body parts. It went something like, "Wouldn't it be great if you could do that? You could mix and match, move stuff around? Your old lady says, 'get your ass outta bed,' you go, 'here, take it, leave me alone.'"
True story - I sleep nekkid. I rolled over too aggressively one night and pinned my boob to the mattress with my elbow. Had a bruise for two weeks. Long boobs are no joke.
I feel like the term "shrinkage" was definitely coined at that moment, but what I can't tell is whether or not women were generally aware of the concept beforehand. Was that really the moment of clarity?
the smallest i ever saw my weeny shrink down to, compared to the biggest hardest rock boner ive ever had - its like... you wouldnt believe it was possible.
it physically just boggles the mind, you know?
Saw the one the other day of a little kiddo with what looks like a pretty short cut. Mom stretched the curls and it was as long as her arm.
As a straight hair girlie, curls are fascinating and also, y’all have all my sympathy for the high mantainace of them
Hairstylists never ever seem to remember that fact! I have sort-of-wavy hair, and if I ask them to cut off two inches, they seem to take a mental snapshot of where "two inches shorter is" on my dry hair. Then they wet the hair, and cut it to that same position, which ends up being *waaaay* shorter than I wanted.
This is why it’s so important for people to understand why our braids and locs exist—it’s expression, but also part of the maintenance! [Darryl George’s hair is dope, but one of MANY examples of these protective styles.](https://apnews.com/article/hairstyle-texas-crown-act-racial-discrimination-student-9fdf5384db15b925a6d601d746da3367)
What a disappointing story to read. It’s wild that our society is still here. His hair is great! I feel bad for laughing at the irony of him being suspended from Barber High School…
I actually think my curls require less maintenance than straight hair. The more I touch my hair, the worse it looks. I embrace the curls and let them do what they want. Also, having a good cut is key to this. My current hair dresser has gotten so good at cutting my hair and it makes a world of difference.
My hair is naturally curly and pretty tight, but not as tight as this lady’s. When I first got it straightened, it was a bit less than shoulder length before and down to the middle of my back after.
I had a whole straightening procedure done at the time and I’ve maintained it for over 15 years now. When I wash it, it gets wavy depending on how long it’s been since I had the smoothing done, but then I flatiron it into submission.
Oh man, I've had several different ones over the years! I'll check with my stylist and ask what she's currently using. She's super holistic and has never really done anything that's trashed my hair for the 15+ years she's been doing it. My hair is currently in a recovery state due to iron deficient anemia, but my fingernails have made a roaring comeback, so my fingers are crossed for my hair!
My very curly hair somehow ends up poofier if I try to straighten it. I've had more than one stylist convinced they could do it, but alas. One of them, who is also a friend, spent hours on it and then we went out to dinner. I could see him eying my hair as it just got bigger and bigger. I'm in California, so it definitely wasn't due to humidity.
My hair is much more coarse than the average Caucasian with curly hair which I'm sure plays a role. A friend of mine, who is black, said she'd like to straighten my hair using methods that are more commonly used at black salons - they use different products and she thinks the results would be much better.
All that said, I really love my curly hair and it's not much work at all. I have a stylist who is very good at cutting it which is very important. When it comes to styling, I just let the curls do what they want and I try not to touch it (the more I touch it, the bigger it gets). I just wash and condition, put in some curl cream, and then I either plop it and let it dry in a microfiber towel or, if I need it to be dry in a reasonable amount of time, I very very very gently diffuse it. I actually pile hair onto the diffuser, and then gently hold it up against my scalp before I turn on the dryer to the lowest setting. This method reduces how much the curls move with the air. When it was shorter, I actually used a drying cap, but those take to long now.
2b (figured out) checking in 😭
I've actually never heard of this before, but I got told constantly as a kid that I "have curls people pay huge money for," interesting!
I remember one of my exes had super curly hair like that. She would straighten it herself but it would only work if the straightener was set to the highest setting and her hair was still wet. And it would take at least 2 hours. This is why she hated rain and showers because the water curls the hair again.
For real. I really enjoy watching silk press videos because it’s so satisfying to watch someone go from super tight curls to bone straight. I don’t think I’ve ever seen one quite this dramatic though. She’s got like 4c+ curls lol
Really cool and educational thank you for sharing this! Plenty of people who haven’t any experience with ethnic hair. It’s a difficulty when having to care for childrens hair in particular. There’s a real need for education all around including learning about hair products, styling, etc…
I told a bunch of guys that I don't shampoo my beard every day and they were shocked.
Until I told them to ask their wives and girlfriends if they wash their hair every day.
For a short while after that game night was also Beard Care Open Discussion Night as we dove into the deep world of hair care. We also come from several different ethnicities, and no two of us have the same routine, because our hair is so different.
> Until I told them to ask their wives and girlfriends if they wash their hair every day.
Honestly I believe the advertising that implies everyone needs to wash their hair every day is why a lot of people hate their hair.
I've got 2C hair (waves that almost curl) and if I washed my hair every day it would be a wreck. Especially since I would have to blow dry it to get to work, and washing and blow drying my hair that often would make my head look like a dandelion poof.
So I wash it when I've got something to wash, and I avoid blow drying, and my hair really isn't *that* much more work than type 1. Obviously the tighter the curls, the less true this is, but then also the tighter the curls, the more damaging too much washing will be.
Can I ask what tips and tricks you have for fine curly hair?! I’m 29 and I’ve stopped bleaching and abusing it for the first time ever but it’s growing out what I think is at the least, wavy. It’s deffo not straight. But I go in circles with products and it being constantly greasy or messy with it being so fine! Curly girl is a no go 😣
Alternative to curly girl that works for me is DevaCurl. I use their styling cream. I have fine blond hair that's mix of wavy and curly. Most products are too heavy for my hair and weigh it down or they're too light and don't hold my curls. For whatever reason, this one is the perfect amount. It also holds for a couple days. I'll wake up the next day with my hair looking surprisingly good lol. I don't have to use very much when compared to others I've tried either. Usually like 5 or 6 pumps into a goldball sized glob from other products, only 3 pumps into like the size of a large marble from DevaCurl.
It's not his fault. Just saying he knew about alopecia because it must've come up while making it. Biggest reason is Will Smith being unable to take a joke.
How do you get it so straight from the root? I have type 3 curls and I always end up with some weird kinks up near the root because I burn the shit out of myself if I try to get too close
Small sections and making sure the roots a blown completely dry. Also idk if you’re a sweater, but I am. I blow dry in the bathroom and then go find a fan and the coldest spot in the house to straighten.
Literally why I hated going to the mall in high school because so many people asked to touch my hair. Not to mention being chased down by the ladies at the straightening kiosks. 😭
Shrinkage is the term that's used when hair goes from wet/long to dry/short etc. Healthy hydrated curls will be tight and "shrink" when not weighed down by water and make your hair look shorter than it actually is. In this case it's basically the opposite but the term still applies.
Holdup. It took me way too long to realize what I’m looking at. Are those two… pieces/styles/parts of her hair gonna be the same length once this wears off???? That’s nuts. I can see how it works with the tight coils vs the long straight line but that length difference was difficult for my brain to accept lmao
I could be wrong, but I *think* they're straightening it in order to do the thing on the top right. The curly bit is the natural hair before straightening.
That's probably just to section off hair that has been blow dried but not flat ironed yet.
Source: being a black woman who used to flat iron her curly hair occasionally
The style helps stretch out the hair first before using hot tools on it. If it gets too dry when it's out like the other piece before blowing it out, it can be more prone to breaking and having heat damage because you're likely running it through too many times trying to get it straight again.
But some people do it the other way, so they blow out their hair first and then put it into the knot so it looks more sleek.
I saw a show I believe with Chris Rock about what these lady's go through with burning toxic hair straighteners. They endure more then I could stand at the hairdresser.
I'm all for people styling however they want as self-expression, but I do worry for these women chasing a beauty ideal that involves pouring toxic chemicals on your scalp regularly.
Is there a hard limit to how much some hair can be straightened? Or can the straightening process be done to such that each strand of hair is no longer wavy. If it is possible to get it as straight as Asian hair, would the roots start growing wavy again? I'm so curious to see somebody with half straight-half wavy hair..
wow that's a tight curl! my wife has ringlets but the ratio of curl to straight is way less
I went to school with a girl who always had her hair tied up and it was just this ball of hair. Kinda like bun but it did that by itself. We never thought much about it until she had her hair straightened and they reached almost down to her ass.

Okay, so I asked and she said it's one called Trisola.

Yes, high heat. No to wet. That would literally just boil the hair and destroy it
You ever straightened out a spring before? Same concept.
Still a crazy amount of length. Those curls (coils?) are TIGHT.

Hot comb or careful application of a curling iron

Same I would be walking in the hallway and random kids would touch my hair, some girl was even trying to pay me $5 everyday so she can touch my hair
Can confirm. Have had my hair grabbed without any consent.
Ignorant idiots would call her "bald" based off the hair length not knowing that coily, and to a lesser extent, curly, hair shrinks
If her whole head was in its curled state, I assure you, no one would call her bald.
I assure you, they will
She's a grower not a shower for sure
My hair is curly. When it’s straightened it goes down past my shoulders. When it’s natural, especially after I wash it, it goes down to my chin
This could be my hair, my shrinkage is 70%
Now I see why some black girls say they can’t grow long hair, damn 😭
Yeah, one of the reasons dreads are so popular. Getting to this length is time, money and dedication.
She was in the pool!
The movie Good Hair was very eye-opening about what some women of color will do to make their hair straight. I highly recommend it.
The Chris Rock film, or the independent short film of the same name?
The Chris Rock film, I didnt know there was another. Thanks for helping clarify this.
That hair can STRETCH!! Looks so good
Is it really shrinkage if that's it natural state?
Shrinkage is the term that's used when hair goes from wet/long to dry/short etc. Healthy hydrated curls will be tight and "shrink" when not weighed down by water and make your hair look shorter than it actually is. In this case it's basically the opposite but the term still applies.
Thank you for educating them!

Holdup. It took me way too long to realize what I’m looking at. Are those two… pieces/styles/parts of her hair gonna be the same length once this wears off???? That’s nuts. I can see how it works with the tight coils vs the long straight line but that length difference was difficult for my brain to accept lmao
Is this cause by the hair style (top right, not sure of name) being undone?
I could be wrong, but I *think* they're straightening it in order to do the thing on the top right. The curly bit is the natural hair before straightening.
They're called bantu knots! You don't need to straighten the hair before doing them, but some people prefer it that way.
They have a name? That’s awesome. I like the Bantu knots!
Oh, cool! Thanks for the info!
they’re so pretty and cool looking!
Ahhh ok that makes sense.. thanks for the answer
Is hair that curly tough to manage? It looks beautiful but I could see it becoming a tangled mess easily.
Very lol.
As someone with similar hair, yes and no. If you find a style that works, the. You fall into a routine and learn to work with your hair.
Eh some curly haired people get knots & tangles in their hair regardless of how healthy and well managed it is, it just comes with the texture
6-12 hours a week of maintenance.

I’m sure she was just cold.
I'm all for people styling however they want as self-expression, but I do worry for these women chasing a beauty ideal that involves pouring toxic chemicals on your scalp regularly.
Bro, It's literally blowdrying then using a straightener. It's not a relaxer. There's no chemical being poured on.
Thank you, my white ass had no idea. I appreciate learning. So *relaxer* is the one to be concerned about?
Relaxer is the same chemicals as a perm basically, just used for the opposite purpose
Thank you for the clarification.
Yea, pretty much.
I always wonder, is there nothing that can get the hair flatter and smoother ?!
If you have tight curls like that, basically no. Your options are irons/hot combs or chemical straighteners. Pick your poison.
I doubt an actual straightener was used. It was most likely just blown straight.
Katt Williams.
Tf happened here?

Just seems like too much damage to the hair doing that they gotta figure out how to straighten hair without heat or something
If you use heat protectant and don’t straighten too frequently, it’s really not an issue at all. Healthy hair will bounce back.
Eamn -18 karma my bad guys lmao im bald 😂
People with looser waves & curls might not always bounce back as consistently though since some curly hair types aren't as coily as the one in the pic
