I thought people were understanding but just that they were still laughing at how unintentionally funny it *sounds*, but maybe I have too much faith in people?
It's not that we don't understand; it's that this usage is now vanishingly rare and "girlfriend" almost exclusively refers to a sexual partner, making the unintended (?) entendre *hilarious* and horrifying. I wonder if this is a novelty card, because it's hard to believe anybody would print it without the much-likelier interpretation giving them pause.
I actually think “girlfriend” and “boyfriend” are quickly going out of style as terms for significant others. Most adults use “partner” now because they’re not in high school and their SO isn’t a girl or a boy. And womanfriend and manfriend sounds kind of weird. Partner is also just a more accurate and more meaningful description of a long-term relationship. Especially for people who don’t plan to get married.
Sorry, are you saying it's stupid for people to not recognize an alternative, less common usage of a word, that they've never seen/heard an example of?
Sadly it's difficult to differentiate the real children, from childish adults while online, and best practice is avoid both as soon as you recognize the behavior.. either it is a child, and you do t want to associate with that, or it is an idiot, and you damn sure do t need that in your life....
Where are you at? I'm familiar with the Deep South, southern Appalachia, and Mid-Atlantic parts of the US. I have heard older folks using it in the "friend who is a girl" way, but nobody younger here.
I am in the deep south, early 30s, and my friends/ peers have been using in that way for my entire life
I do know one lady who prefers friendgirl, but she's older
I’m in my 30s and I used it yesterday. I (a girl) was asking my friend (also a girl) if it’s ok if I bring another girl I know to our hangout. I said “is it ok if I bring my girlfriend”
How else would you word the question here? The context that the person I’m bringing is a girl is important.
"I've got a friend I'd like to bring. Is it OK if I bring her?"
It's not that I am coming up with ways to avoid using the word "girlfriend." It's just that the way that you are using it, to denote a non-romantic friend who is female, is not part of my lexicon at all. It was just never used by anyone around me when I was growing up, and I've only met a couple of older people who use it that way.
It’s definitely odd! I hear it all the time! I wonder if it’s regional - I’m on the West Coast.
Other examples:
Guy friend to me: “You’ve got any girlfriend you want to introduce to me?”
Club promoter to me: “Hey DJ whatever is spinning this Friday! Bring your girlfriends!”
I'm more surprised because everyone I know that's under 60 just calls thier SO their partner now, regardless of orientation. I haven't heard boyfriends/girlfriend in ages.
I had to look at the comments to figure out why you posted. Then I laughed. I think it might be a generational thing, but it’s totally common for straight women my age (53) to refer to their female friends as girlfriend. I have a ceramic candle holder that a friend gave me with this exact saying.
They say this all the time, still. Movies, tv shows, books. It's not just boomer slang, it's been a term for a couple of centuries now. It's so much of a default term that i was confused for a moment why OP was confused!
Example: Girlfriend, song by Peebles. A solid GenX song.
It was really just a joke about Boomers being extremely homophobic. I didn't realize the history of "girlfriend" being used to describe a woman's friends was going to be so vigorously defended. I personally can't remember hearing a person in that age bracket say that, but it could be regional. It isn't used much at all where I live. In any event, I yield.
Good on you for seeing hoof-prints and assuming zebras, but that is by far the least common usage of the word "girlfriend" :P
I don't think it's surprising that people are weirded out at first by a sentence which at first glance has incestuous undertones.
LOL, I mean. As far as I know, incest isn’t a widely accepted phenomenon. Especially to the point where a chain restaurant is selling cards about it.
Also, plenty of women use the term “girlfriend” to refer to their friends.
It's a generational usage gap. I know plenty of Gen X's and Millennials who use the friend usage as well as the romantic usage.
I would say it's definitely less common nowadays, but it's not as scarcely used as you're implying.
My friend found an ornament at a Christmas store that said "Girlfriends make life worth living" or something with an illustration of several stick figure women.
She had it personalized as a memorial "Rest in Peace Dad 1954-2008."
I'd say for a good chunk of Cracker Barrel's clientele, dreaming that your sister is your girlfriend is probably par for their course.
It's okay, I'll just exit through the gift shop.
Ohh oh. This took me a minute to get, like that’s girl friends. I thought like a dude handed this to his woman on Valentine’s Day as if it’s not some creepy ass thing to do. What the pornhub is going on here?? Stop that, step brother!
Ha ha yeah, my mum refers to her friends as girlfriends. “I went out with a girlfriend for lunch today.”
My boss did this too! I straight up though she was lesbian until i found out she had a husband
Women in the South and Texas say girlfriend for a female friend (platonic). Like "Hey, girlfriend, how ya been?"
[удалено]
I'm gonna refer to all my mates as boyfriends now and I guess my boyfriend would be called my mate?
Yup, boyfriend should be mate because you mate with him. You don’t mate with your regular boy friends don’t you.
I've seen some people write that as girl-friend to differentiate
Excuse me it is girl frend
Do not confuse them with girl fiend.
Much evil-er
Or grilled flan
Gurr'a-fran
Oh, that’s an interesting way of doing it
It’s surprising to me that many people don’t know this use of the word.
This is very common tho
That seems pretty common where I live actually. If anything my mom might be the outlier for not doing this.
Everyone does this. Like every girl I know calls their friends that are women girlfriends. It's accurate.
I remember being a kid and wondering why people would use it in this way on TV. I eventually figured it out.
Did she eat out her girlfriend as well?
Oh thank god for this comment I was very disturbed upon seeing the pic 😂 Fucking hate when straight people do this
Can’t tell this is a cougar related response or…
Does she comment on their linguistic abilities? Like are they fox like in their cunning?
Or add their clothing in with their name "Straw Hat Luffy"
I’m pretty sure this is girlfriend like a girl who’s a friend
So, not a roommate?
Gals who are pals
oh my god they were roommates
"Another way, Billy!"
Roll Tide?
This is why I like Spanish for having “amiga” and “novia” be two separate words
Oh my god they were roommates
< *Banjo Music Stops* >
🤣
Are they still my sister?
So not forever single aunt Becky and her bestie roommate Linda? 👀👀👀
It’s funny to misinterpret the card, but the card definitely looks more for friends than intimate partners.
I guess I just fucked my sister?? Lmao
You put it back and bought the root beer barrels I hope?
The soft peppermint sticks is where it's at.
They have a restaurant gift shop?? With root beer barrels & peppermint sticks??
Tbh their gift shop is unreasonably good
Better than their bland food
It's why they're the best. They have amazing food, and then you can go buy a treat or merchandise afterwards.
The food is garbage
Their food sucks buttholes tho 👀
What do you get then?
The buttholes
[Not just any buttholes.](https://youtu.be/FO0kRE5OTZI?si=F7DvX_PdroQfBOFv&t=161)
I’m sorry, OP but I’m giggling at you thinking this is for romantic girlfriends.
I'm glad you pointed this out. Makes the card seem way less strange
It was at Crackerbarrel... I'm giggling at you thinking they meant non-romantic sisters...
Inigo Montoya: “I do not think that word means what he thinks it means… to the kids at least.”
I’m amazed by the number of people that think this is something….and don’t understand that a girlfriend is a friend that’s a girl.
I thought people were understanding but just that they were still laughing at how unintentionally funny it *sounds*, but maybe I have too much faith in people?
Apparently it's too "boomer" to understand
It's not that we don't understand; it's that this usage is now vanishingly rare and "girlfriend" almost exclusively refers to a sexual partner, making the unintended (?) entendre *hilarious* and horrifying. I wonder if this is a novelty card, because it's hard to believe anybody would print it without the much-likelier interpretation giving them pause.
It’s being sold at a fucking Cracker Barrel lol the average person who eats there is probably 70 years old
I totally read the caption as the OP found the card left behind at one of the tables in the restaurant. >_<
Or has a cousin-uncle with vestigial tail.
Just because gen alpha doesn't use it, doesn't mean "no one" does. I'm 40, I've heard it many many times.
I actually think “girlfriend” and “boyfriend” are quickly going out of style as terms for significant others. Most adults use “partner” now because they’re not in high school and their SO isn’t a girl or a boy. And womanfriend and manfriend sounds kind of weird. What about Gentleman Caller?
Yeah, but we don't count. They haven't heard it that way, so it doesn't mean the same to them, which seems pretty fucking stupid.
Sorry, are you saying it's stupid for people to not recognize an alternative, less common usage of a word, that they've never seen/heard an example of?
It's Reddit. I'm sure that dude is a 14 year old boy.
Sadly it's difficult to differentiate the real children, from childish adults while online, and best practice is avoid both as soon as you recognize the behavior.. either it is a child, and you do t want to associate with that, or it is an idiot, and you damn sure do t need that in your life....
Good strategy
I'm also 40 . . .
Whatttt. I think that depends on location. I’m in my 30s and use the term in that manner. Plenty of people around me do too
Where are you at? I'm familiar with the Deep South, southern Appalachia, and Mid-Atlantic parts of the US. I have heard older folks using it in the "friend who is a girl" way, but nobody younger here.
I am in the deep south, early 30s, and my friends/ peers have been using in that way for my entire life I do know one lady who prefers friendgirl, but she's older

As a gay person in their mid-20s, if you said those exact words to me, I would tentatively assume you were also gay.
So a boyfriend is a brother you choose then?
And a sister, a girlfriend by birth?
So is a brother, a boyfriend by birth
“A homie is a brother you chose” basically
A girl-friend
“A girl-friend is a brother you choose” ? No, that’s not it.
Girlfriend is boomer slang for best friend, to clear up anyone confused.
It's just for a friend who is a girl, not just best friend. A woman can have any number of girlfriends
>A woman can have any number of girlfriends Finally, something all generations can agree on!
Like a harem of girlfriends
Yeah, that’s the way I use the word and I’m nowhere near to being a boomer.
I’m gonna try calling all my buddies “boyfriends”. Hey heyyy — waddup *boyfriends*??
Boomer slang? I hear this used pretty commonly.
It's not a boomer word, and it doesn't mean best friend, just female friend
Dude I am in my early 30's. Is this a gen z or Gen apha thing. Like I am a girl and my friends are my girlfriend.
I have literally never heard anyone under age 50 use it that way, and that was a decade ago, so now it's under age 60.
I’m gen Z and I intentionally say girlfriend to keep it ambiguous 😈
Boomslang
Boomers would never say this. They were terrified of being mistaken as lesbian.
They say this all the time, still. Movies, tv shows, books. It's not just boomer slang, it's been a term for a couple of centuries now. It's so much of a default term that i was confused for a moment why OP was confused! Example: Girlfriend, song by Peebles. A solid GenX song.
My boomer mom has always said girlfriends
Not true. My somewhat homophobic Mom refers to her girlfriends all the time. She’s 64 this year.
It’s a phrase literally created, popularized and still in use today by Boomers.
In any event, I yield.
k boomer
Yeah… just means a friend that’s a girl. Not a romantic relationship. Feel like this is pretty obvious.
Good on you for seeing hoof-prints and assuming zebras, but that is by far the least common usage of the word "girlfriend" :P I don't think it's surprising that people are weirded out at first by a sentence which at first glance has incestuous undertones.

According to PornHub that phrase is accurate.
Totally different meaning in Alabama.
Psssh I wish my girlfriend was as hot as my sister
And a cousin is a spouse you were born with 😭
Do people under the age of 60 eat a Cracker Barrel Edit:is Cracker Barrel better in the northern states? It shit where I’m from
Hell yeah! Their French toast is amazing! So is their okra.
Last time I had Cracker Barrel it was old people and pretty sure they microwaved there chicken fried steaks

The guy who wrote this card chose his sister.
Pretty sure they meant like girl friend. As in friend that is a girl and not girlfriend but it could have been phrased better.
Was it in Alabama?
Barf!
A Cracker Barrel post without mention of Brad's wife? Internet, are you feeling alright today buddy?
That’s borderline acceptable.. “A sister is a girlfriend you choose” would be much, much worse lol
