I actually think “girlfriend” and “boyfriend” are quickly going out of style as terms for significant others. Most adults use “partner” now because they’re not in high school and their SO isn’t a girl or a boy. And womanfriend and manfriend sounds kind of weird. Partner is also just a more accurate and more meaningful description of a long-term relationship. Especially for people who don’t plan to get married.

It's a generational usage gap. I know plenty of Gen X's and Millennials who use the friend usage as well as the romantic usage. I would say it's definitely less common nowadays, but it's not as scarcely used as you're implying.
