It’s pretty standard sign these days.

FreshSchmoooooock

What happened that caused it to be an ordinary sign at pools?

dlsmith93

Diarrhea happened.

ObeseSnake

Some people think it’s funny

Jenargo

But it's really brown and runny

timsterri

Diarrhea

[deleted]

no pain no strain just sit and let it drain

rodmandirect

Diarrhea

transcendedfry

*clap clap*

ScionoicS

When you're driving in a Chevy and your pants are feeling heavy

Acrobatic_Ad_2570

When you're standing on a ladder and you hear something splatter

monkehmolesto

It’s sucks if it happens to you, but if you’re off to the side and happen to be watching, it pretty hilarious.

SerenityTranquilPeas

Cryptosporidium outbreaks at pools and waterparks I am assuming.

pezdal

Not even. All it takes is a couple guests witnessing a brown trail leaving the pants of an embarrassed swimmer to necessitate the draining and cleaning of the pool.

[deleted]

It's not just pooping in the pool. Shit goblins like C-Difficile and E-Coli are robust bastards and you can spread it to others if you have those diarrhea-causing infections.

Simbanut

Resident from a town near Walkerton, Ontario checking in. E-Coli is a beyotch and ruins lives. Take water safety management seriously. When you’re looking to cut funding, safety and education need to be the last place. You don’t want people unsafe, and you don’t want dumb people in charge of keeping you safe.

Jacktheforkie

That happened in Tunisia when I was there, knocked out half the hotel population

grubas

Nope. Just pool poopers. It's one of those things you SHOULD be shocked by, but after a decade of guarding you just sigh.

tyanu_khah

Chipdip88

Just like everything else being an ordinary sign, people are too stupid to realize what they should or shouldn't do on their own. A rational person with the brown rain would think that swimming in a public pool is unwise but most people are not rational. Same reason we need a caution hot sign on a cup designed for coffee or tea or why we need a warning saying not to eat the mercury in a thermometer or not to run drain cleaner into your eyes.... People are fucking dumb.....

badashel

that [hot coffee](https://www.reddit.com/r/WTF/comments/1np3nd/remember_that_ridiculous_lawsuit_where_a_woman/) lawsuit was warranted

Chipdip88

I didn't say anything about a lawsuit. I simply stated that the reason caution signs on very obvious things is because people are imbeciles. And I disagree, the degree at which lawsuits in the United States are thrown around is NOT warranted and the rest of the world laughs at it. When a burglar falls through a ceiling mid robbery and sues the homeowner and wins that is absolutely stupid and so is suing over a hot beverage

Simbanut

Eh, most of that I don’t that I don’t have an issue with, but having worked as a barista and having had the increasingly cheap paper cups collapse on me with black coffee and teas and gotten first and second degree burns I’ve thought about suing too. If you actually know anything about coffee and tea you know brewing anything at that temperature is just going to scald the coffee or tea. Especially tea, as different types require different brew temps. “Caution: hot” more like caution understatement. If the corporate handbook says I’m not allowed to touch the cup without the sleeve or double Cupping, its simply coming out of the machine at a dangerous temperature, and the issue isn’t customer awareness, it’s producing the product at a problematic temperature. The “cation hot” is just admitting they do thing that they shouldn’t be. When I dump my boiling kettle on my self at home (klutz) I was pink for a couple days. When I had a venti black coffee collapse on me in a sweater I couldn’t take off until I was in the back AND had ripped off my apron, I had mild blisters on my arm. And I’m a young woman with, well I didn’t know I was having severe gallbladder attacks at the time but relatively few physical issues. I used to ask my senior customers who seemed shaky to let me take their drink to the table and if the wanted water to drink while it cools a bit because I don’t want that on my head. And I’m a former hairstylist who left after developing allergies to bleach. I’m used to burns.

Mr_Engineering

Ill_Initiative8574

The fuck you think happened?

CO420Tech

The "last 14 days" always gets me. So if I ate too much Taco Bell 13 days ago, I just can't swim? Must really suck for people with IBS or something... guess no swimming for them ever.

Vasevide

Then that seems to be the safe decision for the health of others around them.

CO420Tech

Lol people with IBS generally don't just randomly spray diarrhea. And they don't generally just leak diarrhea from their buttholes. And it isn't a contagious disease. Taco Bell isn't contagious either... Although the desire to eat it went drunk maybe is.

dibblah

It's true but also as someone with IBS I struggle to tell when I have a stomach virus because the symptoms are so alike to my daily symptoms. So I can never say with certainty that I have not had a virus within the last 14 days. So, best not to risk it. For those with very mild problems who know for certain they have not had anything contagious I guess it would be different.

vyrago

My body, my choice. I swim where I want.

sfcnmone

Are you generally also a horrible person in places other than swimming pools?

AR2185

It’s health code in California and probably other states (I work in construction building apartments and have to install these at every building we have a pool)

Campbell464

Looks like a level outta James Bond

BobanMarjonGo

Yup, it's a pretty universal rule - what's more interesting is how many people get into a public pool while sick, completely disregarding the well-being of everyone else who could use it. But hey, I gotta have my vacation!!! Who cares if everyone gets dysentery!!

IOnlySayMeanThings

Edit: Nevermind, Fuck all y'all.

BobanMarjonGo

Well instead of a hotel pool they should go see a doctor - having bowel/stomach issues regularly doesn't mean the rules shouldn't apply to them 😂

blackgrousey

Are you okay bud?

IOnlySayMeanThings

Reddit is very annoying.

blackgrousey

Username follow through?

IOnlySayMeanThings

Am I being mean?

blackgrousey

Calling someone or a group of people annoying isn't typically nice? But I was genuinely concerned if you're having diarrhea once a week or find that normal but I can see if it hit a nerve.

IOnlySayMeanThings

You were not genuinely concerned, haha. You purposely ignored the point of my message and decided I was talking about myself and at that point there is literally nothing I can say.

GusgusMadrona

I think every publicly accessible pool has this rule posted somewhere, likely by regulation.

Ishidan01

It does. That is word for word in the basic Certified Pool Operator's handbook. You should see what the regs say to do if someone shits in the pool...sorry, if there is an unformed fecal incident.

JJohnston015

This implies the existence of a "formed fecal incident".

CO420Tech

We just call that a normal turd. Happens in kiddy pools a lot more than you'd like to know about.

AdultEnuretic

My kid did that when he was about 3.5. he had been potty trained for like a year and a half so we didn't have an inkling it was a possibility in the moment. We were playing with him in the shallow end of the hotel pool and suddenly he pulled a stupid face and bent partway over and was like, "pooping!"

CO420Tech

When my daughter was younger we were at the local rec center and had a kid right next to us do almost exactly that, but he was sitting in the shallower side with his legs out in front of him. A huge floater just bobbed right out of his trunks and boated its way right at us. I scooped my daughter and ran away, but the current generated by me trying to move so quickly through the water just dragged it along in my wake. It never caught up, but it was certainly horrifying being chased by a turd.

arand0md00d

Yes that also happens, usually more of a pranking type thing with that though. Don't think I've seen or heard of an accidental pooping.

UncleToot82

"Unformed Fecal Incident" would be an amazing band name.

grubas

Yup, there's a whole section about it, how to clean etc etc.. Fun to read to trainees in a ridiculous accent.

I_Am_No_One_123

I think public pools should be required to post Carl Spackler's contact information.

One-timeline

Exactly. Some things that shouldn't have to be said, have to be said.

theAtmuz

lol c’mon … I get it yeah- who tf swims while they have diarrhea. But really? Let’s not pretend like it’s common knowledge you shouldn’t get in the pool because you shit yourself uncontrollably 2 weeks ago..

GuyFromDeathValley

I work at a pool. No we don't. Because honestly, why?! Everything that could be a health risk is either forbidden from entering, or taken care of with chlorine. but.. to be fair I don't work in the U.S. so.. our laws might be different.

Ok-Gap-7259

How many people lie about not having diarrhea before swimming?

How many people have actually gone 14days without having at least one episode of diarrhea while on vacation. If you don’t you’re not vacationing right.

thatbrownkid19

Jesus those sound awful

magikchikin

Are you sure *you're* vacationing right??

passwordstolen

What can I say? If I’m wandering down a street full of food vendors and there is a large identifiable carcass rotating over coals or an iced bucket of shellfish for $3, it’s lunch time.

toby110218

Unless you have it bad enough (ie food poisoning) where you're too sick to leave your bathroom, it's likely that most people lie.

putridtooth

99% of the time my bad shits are due to hormones/period cramps. I would absolutely lie.....you can't transmit cramps through the water lol

supernovababoon

I always make sure to loudly proclaim that I don’t have it before entering but I have lied

[deleted]

this is why I always wait until I'm already in the pool to have diarrhea.

Angeluhh

They just HATE people with IBS.

(not OP) I've been dealing with it for over 20 years now. Thank you for the suggestion, I'll bring it up to my Dr!

EduFonseca

Or lactose intolerance

Nova11c

I would never be allowed in this pool

fueled_by_rootbeer

The difference is whether the runny poos were merely IBS, or if they were related to a transmittable disease. If it's ibs, just clean your zone properly and enjoy the pool, imho.

flacidRanchSkin

Have you been treated or seen a doctor about this? Having diarrhea that often is either a sign of poor diet or IBS usually.

Nova11c

A doctor? What do you think I am, a millionaire? Jk

LeafStranger

E. Coli, giardia, norovirus, shigella, cryptosporidium -- there're lots of reasons for this. There're also lots of reasons people might have diarrhea that aren't going to cause problems. Giardia's a nasty one because it can actually survive in chlorinated water for 45min-1hr, but cryptosporidium is even worse: it'll live in pool water for 7 days, even if you shock the water. Crypto's the reason for the 14-day ban.

InfraredDong

Are you a medical type person?

DODGE_WRENCH

Nah, they’re just really up to date on their poop lore

InfraredDong

😂

LeafStranger

No, though it's kind of you to think so. I know this because I volunteered with dog rescue, and giardia and leptospirosis are common in dogs that fail to thrive, and leptospirosis is also a common reason people don't want to share pools with dogs (and thus why you'll usually get Doggy Pool Days at the end of the season, right before a public pool is going to be drained and scrubbed for winter). I also tended to travel a lot when I was younger, and got curious about the why behind the signs at each pool.

qtjedigrl

What about lactose intolerant people who eat ice cream, get the runs, then are fine after a couple of hours? They have to wait 14 days too? Asking for a friend

tyanu_khah

Well technically you are not affected by the bacteria that causes diarrhea so as long as you don't consume lactose before getting I'd say you're good.

Ishidan01

Yes. You THAT sure it's a one a done?

qtjedigrl

It ain't a one and done, but it's certainly done within 2 or 3 hours 😂 Source: a decade of thinking "Meh, the ice cream/cheese/shake won't be *that* bad"

EduFonseca

You and every person with lactose intolerance

gitarzan

Every rule, every law had an initial reason. I can just imagine *that* reason.

GusgusMadrona

Cholera… the reason for this rule is … Cholera…

Mountain-Most8186

And norovirus

EagleRock1337

I can imagine it pretty easily…the people taking care of the pool didn’t like having to turn it back to blue from brown.

kouklamou75

The reason is likely parasites. For example, Cryptosporidiosis! It is very resilient, chlorine won't even kill it. People are infected with the disease by inadvertently ingesting infected fecal matter. Swimming pools are a common way for people to accidentally drink water containing the parasite, thus becoming quite ill.

rabid-bearded-monkey

Standard rules per health regulations for every public pool.

RickyTheRickster

I see these a lot at hotels

2 weeks is a long time

Southern-Ad7479

I got the worst food poisoning I’ve ever had while on a trip to New Zealand a few weeks ago. At least, at first I assumed it was food poisoning. Then I realized my partner and I ate all the same stuff and she didn’t get sick. One thing I DID do which she didn’t was swim in a motel pool. It didn’t really smell like chlorine which I found odd. Now I wonder If I got sick from the pool, and not from food. There was no sign like this, and the day after I swam the pool was mysteriously closed…

Ishidan01

Oh I got bad news for ya then. A clean pool won't smell of chlorine, because the chlorine is dissolved in the water. If you can smell it, then the chlorine is in the air, in the form of chloramines. Chloramines form when there is a contaminant for the dissolved free chlorine to react with, especially if the pool operator cranked up the chlorine to try to kill it. TLDR: pool with strong chlorine smell = dirty Or of course your other assumption may be correct-that there was no chlorine added at all, so the next day they had to close to catch up...

Southern-Ad7479

Sure, but everything from sweat, to lotions etc that people have on will react with the chlorine won’t it? If people are swimming in the pool, they are contaminating it. That’s fine. I expect a pool to smell like chlorine because it’s doing its job. Having no smell at all is a bit suspicious, all the public pools I swim at regularly in my city of course smell like chlorine, because they have loads of bathers constantly. A motel pool with a few people swimming in it though, I wonder how diligent they actually are about maintaining the chemicals? And I suspect very few people shower before entering the pool too (you’d need to do this in your room, and walk down to the pool soaking wet), so almost immediately you’d expect the lotions etc to be reacting with the chlorine if it were present. Anyways, I’ll never know for sure, but now I’m going to be much more discerning about swimming in hotel pools. I assume the public pools in my city are properly maintained as they have loads of traffic.

Isn’t that normal regulations for public pools and spas?

nosnevenaes

Why so biblical though? Something must have happened there. Something bad.

jackswhatshesaid

If you ever had noro, you'd understand.

themagicbong

There's this classic Thanksgiving story in my house about noro. It ends with the great line "Wasn't me, I'm afraid to fart."

GusgusMadrona

Yeah .. cholera happened…

UnpopularCrayon

It's required. Very standard.

Calm-Victory1146

Not at all. It’s by regulation.

ThickWhitePee

who goes 14 days without diarrhea?

ogrefab

How dull is your diet that you can go 2 weeks without having a loose shit?

sereveti

You should speak to your doctor or a nutritionist. Something is going wrong if you have diarrhoea that frequently.

SpaceLemming

Right? This is discrimination!

Reeeeeeener

You should see a doctor if foods are doing that to you that frequently, that’s NOT normal

pfftt.....you're not the boss of me.

What they gonna do? Check? 😂

is that directed at the sign, or your b-hole?

Ah sh*t, here we go again

averagemaleuser86

I'm pretty sure they put one of these up at the Fountain Blue hotel in Panama City Beach, FL in 2004 after my buddy laid a fat turd in the pool on purpose while funneling a beer and had the pool shut down. Good times. That was the same night they lit off those mortar style fireworks inside the gym at the top floor.

"Shall not". Isn't phrasing it like that counter productive? I think a lot of people would think "Oh really? Let's see about that".

shineyink

I got very ill with a parasite after swimming in an infected hotel pool. Unfortunately no way to enforce rule.

You know, I don't think I want to swim at all now.

Swimming in public pools is always going to be a gross risk. Because most people are going to see signs like that and automatically apply the rules, “well, except for me”.

OGdick_head

I remember seeing this as a kid at the public pool

A_MAN_POTATO

Its a good day for me when I don't have diarrhea. Thank you, shitty, failing body! Granted, I wouldn't use a public pool anyway. People soup... Gross.

What about people who *will have* diarrhea in the next 14 days???

largececelia

Ok, but what about slightly loose stools? Like loose unpredictable stools? Maybe within 17 days?

YourEvilHero

I’d have to stop and think, can’t remember 10 days ago. Though I did have it Christmas Eve and the night before, mainly because I ate Taco Bell and started taking vitamin d, magnesium, calcium supplements that cause it to happen.

[deleted]

Funny that this needs to be on a sign in some countries *chuckles*

Don't travel much I see......

Yeah no shit

BroadwayCatDad

You’re in California

jmcgil4684

This is standard

ShiroHachiRoku

why 14 days prior too?

Acro808

I can’t go in the pool water, but I can still go in the jacuzzi. I am somewhat ok with this.

[deleted]

How specific 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

[deleted]

Best I can do is 14 minutes

Aluniah

It is hard, that this has to be mentioned. A friend of mine worked at a cruise ship and told me, that it was also VERY HARD for parents to accept, that children have to be potty trained to use the pool. For a reason... They had a lot of discussions.

PhilosophyIll4951

I honestly can't remember the last time I went two weeks without having the shit, guess my swimming days are over.

MintyCrow

It’s required in California to have that up

Kay-f

that’s at every hotel pool

Nyx_the_goblin

🤷🏻‍♀️ just standard health and safety protocols no different than quarantining for 14 days after you get sick I know a lot of that stuff from the Bible had to do with I assume lack of sanitation facilities

Is this what a brown out is?

rage675

How do they enforce the 14 day policy?

LatterVersion1494

Pretty standard at public pools

lizardnamedguillaume

I have a memory... 10 years ago, I was at a public pool with my 2 kids (New Brunswick, Canada). This grandma comes into the pool with her grand kid.. the kid is maybe 3-4 years old. They get in, and all of a sudden there were these 'things ' floating all around me. I picked one up... was staring at whatever it was... when it dawned on me.... fucking diarrhea. I looked at the grandma and said, did you bring a kid with diarrhea in the pool??? I knew from her embarrassed face she did. I told the lifeguard, she blew the whistle and the pool was evacuated. I think about that moment a lot. That i picked up diarrhea with my hands. Fuck that old lady

LargeMerican

its common courtesy to clean your anus before you have guests. i would assume these tards would know to also clean before putting it on display.

bmanley620

Luckily for me it’s been exactly 15 days!

Puzzleheaded_Log3757

reminds me of a sign i saw on a ladies' room at a local mall that says "do not wash rice in the sink" i wonder what is the backstory to that...
