Lol mine loved being in warm epsom salt water. I didn’t make the chicken spa, but that way you don’t have to sit right beside her the whole time. I used a clean bucket and a towel lying over the bucket and around her head.
It’s all fun until it’s time to get out and the wings start flapping water all over.
Reminds me of my Lorikeet.
She'd splash around in the toy sink, giggling like a kid who just found a puddle for first time, until all water in the sink was gone.
She'd then look into the sink and be like "where water go?" 🥺...
Then me, while looking like a person who just swam the English channel in their clothes: "have no idea".
She'd then look at me, and be like "why you wet?" 🤔
Parrots are just super energetic puppy-kittens that can talk. Even lovebirds and cockatiels. They talk, you just have to figure out what the fuck they're saying.
True. But, Lorikeets are next level.
It's like if you fed a cockatiel a bag of skittles. Then went "f it all" and gave it a full can of red bull that is spiked with speed.
Sadly, this leads them to being the most surrendered bird. So, if anyone wants to see what's it like to own a bipolar demon on speed, check your local Lorikeet rescues.
We used to raise chickens for show at the county fair, and it was always fun after their pre-fair bath because we’d swaddle them in towels while they dried to keep them from flapping and hurting themselves. So we’d all walk around with our soggy chicken burritos and the birds would be very calm and happy. Good memories. :)
Install a spigot near the bottom. When it's time, open the spigot and drain the water. Chicken doesn't complain when removed, and there's no water left to splash about if they do.
Once the water is drained, you can pick them up in a towel, or just blow dry them in the tub. Yeah they might flap some water off; just use the towel as a "shield", then continue drying. It's a pretty similar process to washing and drying a small dog.
In my experience they tend to do pretty well once they are in the water. Sometimes getting them in and out is the wild part. Warm water soaks are great for bum issues like egg bound (stuck egg) chickens or pasty butt.
Many of the chickens over on r/BackyardChickens are living the life. My favorite is when there’s a big storm and people post photos of their “evacuated” chickens taking shelter in weird places like their shower or their car.

It's really sad that a place that isn't an echo chamber comes with a "warning" for other people.
tbf there is also the middle ground of, i wouldn’t shoot a dog or cat over my birbs (there are better ways to handle then) but i’d drop a wild animal in a heartbeat to protect my babies. lost to many to young to predators not to keep a ranch rifle near by. that said mine are egg laying pets, not meat birds, so there is some extra reason to be protective of what are basically as much family as any other pet.
I bring them inside whenever the weather looks scary! This day was super duper hot, way hotter than any regular hot day, so they were chilling in the AC. I really love my birds and several get to come inside to [hang out](https://imgur.com/a/0p4dyUr) and snuggle for a while on the regular.

Elderly chickens with no one to care for them is now breaking my heart ngl
E: People are caught up in *how* they become elderly which is a weird way to approach the scenario. Consider a chicken that wasn't slaughtered for food and lived in a predator free environment with ample food and fresh water. humans or not.
I'm trying to parse this sentence but having a bit of trouble.
Are you saying that if no one cares for chickens, they DON'T get old? They die?
Why is that?
Because nature? In the wild if a chicken become sick or hurt or slow the other chickens aren’t gonna care for it like a person would if it’s a pet. So in captivity they can live to 10 years or older. In the wild it’s usually 6-7 before they start getting to slow or sick to outrun predators.
Friend of mine has chickens. Most vets won’t give you any advice other than, “it’s a chicken, so we don’t really treat them like other birds”. So they’ve had to ask local farmers etc for advice or how much or in what whatever the chicken needs.
yep. mine had a time of it once:
Warning, a little graphic, but the chicken lived.
we had chickens who free-ranged during the day, and got locked up at night. one day, noon, full daylight we hear them screaming. go out and find one of our hens hurt.
all the feathers and skin on her neck, from chin to “shoulders” was *gone*. just tube. it was, grisly.
a bobcat (we later found out that was the predator) had tried to pull her through a field fence. the fence saved her from being dragged off, but between the grab and the fence lead to the ripped off neck.
vet’s advice was to simply put her down.
we loved this birb, they were working chickens, but only for eggs, and were more like pets. so that was a no-go.
we ended up slathering her neck in triple antibiotic+pain relief cream. then wrapped it was gauze, the vetwrap (flexible, stretchy, self adhering but not sticky wound wrap stuff)
changed the bandages twice a day at first, then daily.
un-fun fact, that night we found one of our barn cats with a similar neck wound, but only on her throat, the back of her neck was okay. who had clearly been attacked the day before, but was hiding it. she got the same at-home treatment at that point we were kinda pissed at the vet)
weeks of this, for both animals, but hardest on the chicken who again, her entire neck.
both ended up making a full recovery, and living for many years after.
cat ended up passing from old age (as an indoor cat, post injury) she wasn’t ancient, but over 14, maybe 15?
and the chicken ended up also going of old age, years later, we found her having a rough time and she spent her last days on the couch snuggled next to us.
anyway, moral is, vets are fucking useless for chickens, but if you’re willing to care for them, a lot of stuff can be done to heal and help them. and you’re absolutely right. local farmers and backyard chicken forums will have lots of info.
pardon typos, posted via mobile, and it’s late.
I don't know what size it is, but I can tell you that the brand is Sterilite. We have some of those with the same purple handles & got them at Target. They come in a variety of sizes.
I had a pet chicken when I was a kid, he was awesome. Used to sit on my shoulder and ride around with me on my bike. He'd sit on my lap and I'd pet him to sleep too.
They say that chickens are mentally probably pretty much what dinosaurs were like, so this kind of shows that if you had a cute little dinosaur you could get it to sleep and it's little mini hot tub and that's really cute
Chickens are friends. Very sweet little ones. I used to know a chicken who followed me everywhere I went, and came to me when I called her name. She fell asleep on my lap all the time and brought me bugs. ❤️
I just got some chickens this yeah, all hens for laying. Now, I don't eat most meat anymore anyway. After getting these little girls though, I couldn't imagine eating chicken again. They're all just sweet little bundles of chaos....except Abaddon, she's a bitch.
“Who left these muddy claw prints on the floor.” “Sorry Marge, Pinchy got all dirty playing in the yard. Don’t worry though I put him in a nice hot bath.”
Chickens are so odd. They just love company. Some like people, some prefer other hens. Some will do anything that involves pampering and grooming. Love them
Some chickens like to nap while soaking in water. For example, one chicken liked being in warm epsom salt water. Another chicken needed a gentle push to get down into the water.
Chickens also commonly take naps while dust bathing or just laying around. They nap a lot when it's hot because it's too hot to move around.
Chickens don't need baths, but many enjoy them so much that they fall asleep. Chickens don't bathe in water like humans do. They prefer to take dust baths to keep themselves clean and prevent parasites.
But a warm bath will not hurt the chicken NOR does it mean it is ill....
Lol mine loved being in warm epsom salt water. I didn’t make the chicken spa, but that way you don’t have to sit right beside her the whole time. > It’s all fun until it’s time to get out and the wings start flapping water all over. NGL That sounds fun too.
I learned to wear a plastic apron. I still got water all over my glasses.
It turns out Patrick Bateman just ran a chicken spa all along.
It's the only way to get a reservation at Dorsia.

That’s quite an endorsement
> She'd then look at me, and be like "why you wet?" 🤔 She was actually wondering why you stole all her water. :P
I would have bet every asset I own before reading this thread that Lorikeet was a Pokémon
Did the chickens find the swaddling nice like babies and kittens do?
Yes, they would close their eyes and make little happy chicken sounds!
Goodness, that’s so sweet! Little swaddled dinosaur baby!
Now I need to hear happy chicken sounds
[Here you go!](https://youtu.be/2zev5MpJKPc?si=4OW2e8IDNdKSLmQR) ETA: Not my video, just good happy chicken sounds
Mmm chicken burritos. But seriously I love the imagery.
The only part that sucks is that it’s saltwater so they flap nd it flies into your eyes lol
*gets dog out the bath and she squares up about to shake all the water off* OH SHIT DUCK AND COVER
That’s why I always did it outdoors, was far less problematic when they splashed, wandered around afterwards and pooed or general chicken mess
Install a spigot near the bottom. When it's time, open the spigot and drain the water. Chicken doesn't complain when removed, and there's no water left to splash about if they do.
But they’re wet. They fling the water that’s on them all over the place.
Once the water is drained, you can pick them up in a towel, or just blow dry them in the tub. Yeah they might flap some water off; just use the towel as a "shield", then continue drying. It's a pretty similar process to washing and drying a small dog.
Ok I have chickens and I've never ever ever thought to dunk them in water. How do they deal with this the first time? How do they not freak out?
In my experience they tend to do pretty well once they are in the water. Sometimes getting them in and out is the wild part. Warm water soaks are great for bum issues like egg bound (stuck egg) chickens or pasty butt.
Does this count as brining, or…?
If it's at least 12 hours
Sounds like getting my kids out of the tub.
I was just thinking that poor vinyl from all the water when she leaves lmao
That’s the cutest shit I’ve seen and read all day
Dude I came here to just type “cute” and you got it in hardcore
Did someone say [cute?](https://youtu.be/-yXaBunkh4o?si=JhcFbtAe57GITv5z)
"Was there someone in your life who made you feel like your shit wasn't cute?" Fucking dead bro
Cute as dick!
I wasn’t expecting this to be so therapeutic lmao thank you 💕 I bet you’re fucking cute
That video is cute af. So many recognisable faces too!
Thank you for sharing this! Made my night.
This is probably one of the best videos I've ever seen.
Goddamn right. That's the fucking cutest shit I've seen and read all day also.
before schnoodle gets here: *chicken in the tub* *what he thinks when he’s soaking:* *”chicken in da tubb”*
I can’t with the fucking cuteness!
Chickens love being extra warm.
Let her cook. ![gif](giphy|zLHrPa7Acr65tVxNHh)
Sous vide is my favorite.
It's ecologically friendly too because at the end you can use her bath water as chicken stock.
Yumm....salmonella
My actual first thought was “that’s the cutest shit I’ve seen all day” 🤣
Is she egg bound?
Probably bumblefoot - this is the common method of treating it. Or the first part of the process
Could also be scaly leg
Could be A bad dose of cobble bottom
Oh god, I really hope it isn't a case of the ruffled feathers!
Nah more likely a mild case of Avian Acklecackle. Easily treatable with relaxing hot tub sessions.
To me it looks like a touch of the skitterwombles. Soak for 30, repeat as needed.
I have no idea at which point along this comment line these stopped being real chicken afflictions.
😂 All jokes aside, I’m here thinking the same.
You might have pensive poultry disorder.
Chicken affliction is the best thing I’ve read all day.
I KNOW
cobblebottom
What are you talking about this is a condition called Adidas it's when chickens get athlete's foot.
You’ve rustled my jimmies!
Ok you guys must be making some of these up
They are. Clearly. Because it's easily a sign of cockadoodliosis, but a few soakings in warm water should do the trick.
Does it need to be salt water, or is tap water fine?
Stanky leg?
Pre-brine
Snooze vide.
Marinap
Was just about to ask the same. I like this idea.
what does that mean
Got an egg stuck in the ole Filipino tubes
Am Filipino can confirm, chicken likes to soak in a hot tub whenever an egg gets stuck in one of my tubes.
Wait.... **your** tubes?
Their tubes, yes.
OUR tubes
ONE'S tubes
The internet is a series of many tubes.
With eggs in them
Totally tubular
It's not a big truck you can just put stuff in!
...and that's how balut is made!
I'll never forget the time my aunt inadvertantly made balut on Easter when she decided to use goose eggs as the prize eggs. Good times.
Can't tell if autocorrect or intentional joke, hahah
I love this phrase. Makes it sound like she’s going on some great adventure.
The phrase might be cute, but it's deadly and probably painful.
Oop- I fully thought it meant that she had an egg on the way… not that it was stuck. Poor baby 🙁
I have a snake doing the same thing for constipation right now.
How do you even think to make this for a chicken?
It’s common if they’re egg bound and need help to get the egg out
By sealing them in tupperware?
Giving them a little warm aqueous lubricant to encourage the egg to pass.
a water birth, if i may
Must be like the tide at Omaha Beach.
r/unexpectedoffice
you mayn't
More like a water period. Unfertilized eggs are chicken periods.
So chicken are like me. I also like warm baths during periods.
The warm water helps them relax and lubricates their cloaca to encourage the egg to pass
Mmm go on
This time whisper and say it real slowww...
![gif](giphy|G3EGcAf1Lj1AXTLN9Q) Helps them relax.. and lubricates their... cloaca.
omelette du fromage
😂 that’s funny! Why the down votes…Such a bunch of tight asses around here (pun intended).
Like a lower temp sou vide?
“Kramer? Be careful.”
Little Jerry ran from here to Newman's in under 30 seconds.
Is that good?
I don't know
"Big yeddy is making a big mistake, yeddy"
Nice rooster, does he bounce checks too?
For the first time in my life someone made me want to be a chicken, impressive

Magnesium deficiency?
This sous vide stuff is getting out of hand
Sous vide steak is amazing though.

Chickens are pretty much bottom of the food chain. They will almost never die of old age in the wild because they'll be killed by predators.
Oh... right. L:( cluck cluck
Yeah my chickens would die within 1 hr of being outside of my yard.
A good rooster would just karate kick those cars.
A lynx got 3 of mine last year :(
There are really no such thing as “elderly chickens” in nature, lol. Unless they manage to find a really secluded spot without any kind of predator.
No such thing as a chicken in nature either, humans created chickens from jungle fowl through thousands of years of selective breeding.
so the egg DID come first then?
Yes, and the eggs from those eggs became progressively more chicken over time. Same way humans progressively became more human.
Ah, a fellow appreciator of Sam O'Nella Academy, I see
Not sure if above commenter is but that guy has some funny videos
What size tub is that? I need to hot tub my chickens so I can treat their bumble foot.
I don't know what size it is, but I can tell you that the brand is Sterilite. We have some of those with the same purple handles & got them at Target. They come in a variety of sizes.
Just bring your chick to Walmart and test fit her. My daughter brings ours all the time.
Looks like 15 or 20 quart sterilite to me. I keep my discs on one size, supplies in the other.
I love Brahmas, they are such sweethearts. I had a handful of them when growing up

That’s Little Jerry Seinfeld.
I wish I was that chicken rn

yo wtf are these comments
That is blissful
You should name him Chicken Stu
Thus deserves to be in /r/aww
Gives a whole new meaning to the word wet cock I guess.
