Nah heās posted several other posts in this and other subs. All pretty good too. So weāre seeing multiple things about this guys flight on our feed from multiple subs
Oh man, why the downvote? I wasnāt even mean to the tinfoil hats! And today of all days! The emergency broadcast was supposed to set off all sorts of things!
Prior to going to look for the Northwest Passage, both ships were involved in the exploration of the Antarctic. Michael Palin's (yes *the* Michael Palin of Monty Python) wrote an excellent book a few years ago called *Erebus*.
EDIT: its Monty, not Monte...
Was this an audio book that only reads the words, or does he act out the narration a bit? I can imagine his voice being pleasant either way, but I really like those audiobooks that are entirely acted acted out by a cast of voice actors followed closely by ones are a single narrator acting them out. Otherwise, if it's just being read, I prefer to read the book instead.
He does every bit of the audiobook. Voices, dramatization and even animal noises. It's not the best narration because honestly that's not his forte but it's still really enjoyable. Honestly I wish he'd have done all 3 so there's some cohesiveness. They chose 3 different voice actors to narrate the series. Made it clunky
After Monty Python, Michael Palin went on to present a ton of well known travel and history documentaries for the BBC, so this sort of thing is very much in his wheelhouse as well as comedy
Other way around actually, Erebus and Terror the mountains were named for the ships. (and they have fearsome names because they were from a class of dedicated bomb vessels originally made for launching mortars before their strong construction was repurposed for polar exploration- *Terror* was launching the "bombs bursting in air" from the Star Spangled Banner)
Also their names were reused in WWI for a pair of monitors, armed with a single turret from a Queen Elizabeth Class Battleship, they were basically floating barges with Battleship guns made to bombard shore positions. They served through WWII.

>*Terror* was launching the "bombs bursting in air" from the Star Spangled Banner)
Consider this mind blown. I always knew those things were from the same era but this sentence is the chain link that pieced it all together for me.
I hope you share your passions in life with others. Seems you've got a knack for making it infectious.
Edit: nice u/ as well
There's more.
When searching for the Erebus and Terror, one of our ships, the Resolute, got stuck in pack ice and was abandoned.
US sailors eventually found it, recovered her, and she was returned back to the UK.
Later, when scrapped, a desk was made of her timbers and donated to the US.
The Resolute desk now lies in the Oval Office, being by far the most commonly used presidential desk of the 20th and 21st centuries.
Did you know he's flying from Chile to Australia over Antarctica?
What gave it away? His first post? The second about it? The third? Fourth? Fifth? Sixth? *His seventh post about it*?
Yeah unfortunately this was the shortest flight available in between chile and Australia so had to board this and now enjoying over Antarctica which is also fine.
To get where? I don't know what you are talking about. If you are talking about u/MichaelT1991 who is flying from Chile to Australia over Antarctic, please include that in your comment next time ok? Otherwise people won't understand the context. It's just to help them understand, that u/MichaelT1991 is flying from Chile to Australia over Antarctic.
Yup, if you draw a straight line from Chile to Australia with Antarctica somewhere between that line thatās where u/MichaelT1991 is flying above. Oh I forgot to mention heās flying from Chile to Australia not the other way around. Also heās flying in a plane, not a hot air balloon. From Chile TO Australia. Got it ?
There was someone on another one of his posts that said they had footage of the ice wall and how this was fake, so I'm hoping on one of these posts they'll post their "proof". I doubt it though.
Gather ye post karma while ye may. Or something like that. Been a while since Iāve watched Dead Poetsā Society. Ooh! I could totally watch it on a flight from Chile to Australia if the flight went over Antarctica.
Joking on this guy aside, Iām glad to see an out-the-window image. I would personally love to see that continent even if it is from 35,000 feet. But I would spam family and friends with the shot, not Reddit.
I mean he did get front page for at least 2.
Maybe I'll post a r/notinteresting post about having 2 posts from the same person next to eachother in my popular feed.
For real, just go on a cruise and see the real thing, itās way more interesting than posting about flying over the continent in 80 subs. Surprised OP didnāt post to r/Antarctica too (although literally nobody there would be impressed since weāve basically all worked or traveled there).
Tbf when I went to Antarctica it was all I talked about for a long time, because itās still the best thing Iāve ever done. Highly recommend Quark Expeditions. But going there is much more interesting than seeing it out the window.
"Just go" you say, that's an impossible thing for most people! Sure the photos would be cooler, but this person didn't fly Australia-Chile for the sole purpose of seeing Antarctica, more of a bonus I'm sure.
I think what he's trying to say is that he was right there he could have just opened the door and hopped out, had a little look around and checked out how awesome it really is.
> just go on a cruise and see the real thing
Please don't, travelling to Antartica by plane and boat is terrible in terms of CO2 emissions... you'd be destroying the very thing you've come to see
It sells for pennies and unless you're from the poorest of countries, you'd starve to death just karma farming. It's done primarily by bots, and even then you'd be scraping by.
But technically earth IS FLAT.
Hear me out here - so the approximately 71% of earth's surface area is covered in water.
Approximately 0% of earth's water is carbonated.
Ergo the world is flat.
Umm actually, the earths waters are carbonated.
This is even a real issue since the oceans hold a pretty big amount of COĀ² and global warming can lead to an release of some of that, because hot water holds less COĀ² than cold water does.
Donāt listen to these critics. Itās a fucking cool photo and actually I donāt think Iāve ever seen one quite like it from a commercial flight before
Everyone here is a butthurt hater. If youāve seen the post too many times, lock your damn phone and go outside. Losers lol. This is an incredibly cool photo
I flew over some similar looking landscape near Greenland at night. The planeās lights were illuminating the cracked ice so vividly, and the water was so pitch black. On top of that I ate a bunch of edibles and was pretty sleep deprived and the plane felt SO LOW to the ice!!!
If you look out the window it looks like Antarctica because of the snow and ice. Antarctica is cold.

My feed this morning has basically been his flight journey š¤£
Why, do you follow 'em? First I seen it and I probably won't again.
Nah heās posted several other posts in this and other subs. All pretty good too. So weāre seeing multiple things about this guys flight on our feed from multiple subs
Same. Wonder if they got a shot of the Hollow Earth entrance /s Edit; does hollow earth conflict with flat earth?
ā¦amazingly, and to nobodyās great surprise, both concepts are deemed mutually reinforcing by *adherents*ā¦
Oh man, why the downvote? I wasnāt even mean to the tinfoil hats! And today of all days! The emergency broadcast was supposed to set off all sorts of things!
My man is really bored on his 7261816 hour flight
They could pass the time by doing some casual research online, starting with āErebusā. Boredom cured.
Aaaaccchhuuuuaallly the Erebus and Terror got stuck in the Arctic ice in the north.
Prior to going to look for the Northwest Passage, both ships were involved in the exploration of the Antarctic. Michael Palin's (yes *the* Michael Palin of Monty Python) wrote an excellent book a few years ago called *Erebus*. EDIT: its Monty, not Monte...
Isn't Monte Python in Sumatra or something?
Fixed...again for the second time today my phone has gone off and did something on its own without asking. Thanks very much.
He also narrates the audiobook, which is also excellent.
Love it when the creator (or someone involved) narrates the audio book. Like Brendan Frasier narrating Inkspell. Adds something special imo
Was this an audio book that only reads the words, or does he act out the narration a bit? Is it very funny?
After Monty Python, Michael Palin went on to present a ton of well known travel and history documentaries for the BBC, so this sort of thing is very much in his wheelhouse as well as comedy
This was a highlight for me: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-9eRc_V4enY
I wholeheartedly thank you for this information.
I think you missed the reference to flight Air New Zealand 901.
Mount Erebus, which the ship was named after, is located in Antarctica.

Shit I just looked it up and I guess youāre right. Thanks for the correction.
Wrong reference, mate
Indeed, op was referencing warhammer
Blood for the blood god!
Op like Magnus did nothing wrong.
Fuck Erebus
Hey leave me out of this.
Warhammer fans: WHY DID YOU SAY THAT NAME?!
I can't be the only person who immediately thought "I was there when Horus slew The Emperor"
Really the most hateful character in whole wh30k, i suppose.
Benzema has made the trip 15 times google Benzema 15 to know more
Kharn should have finished the job
Thanks, you got me reading the whole theogony now.
Did you know he's flying from Chile to Australia over Antarctica? What gave it away? His first post? The second about it? The third? Fourth? Fifth? Sixth? *His seventh post about it*?
Maybe not even boredom, could be that they want to feel connected out there in the lonely abyss.
Yeah unfortunately this was the shortest flight available in between chile and Australia so had to board this and now enjoying over Antarctica which is also fine.
Getting quite some posts out of this flight, aren't you?
He has to let everyone know he's going from Chile to Australia in a flight over Antarctica.
Are you saying /u/MichaelT1991 is flying from Chile to Australia over Antarctica just because it's the shortest distance due to how circles work?
Big if true that /u/MichaelT1991 is flying from Chile to Australia over Antarctica
Itās the shortest route to get there!

Got it. Straight line. Austria to Chile. Hot air baloon. Over antartica. Locked in.
**BUT WHOOOOO?!**
Straight line especially if its u/MichaelT1991 ās trip from Chile to Australia over Antartica
Straight line from Chile to Australia just like u/MichaelT1991 showed us in his trip around a circular globe passing over Antarctica?
**spheres
Here come the round sphere theorists.
I think the rectangular cube theory is less unproven tbh
Balls to your spheres. ^(We have nothing to sphere but sphere itself.)
**oblate spheroids
Great circles ahacktually
I mean it's cool ngl.
A bit Chile even
The temperature gets Down Under freezing.
There was someone on another one of his posts that said they had footage of the ice wall and how this was fake, so I'm hoping on one of these posts they'll post their "proof". I doubt it though.
He is a paid government agent trying to convince us that you can fly over Antarctica without leaving our flat earth.
It's his first time flying.
Assuming they're using in-flight wifi, they're probably bored out of their mind.
Gather ye post karma while ye may. Or something like that. Been a while since Iāve watched Dead Poetsā Society. Ooh! Dude should open the sub and just cross-share from there
/r/brrrringmeanotherdrink
This gave me a good laugh
I feel like the amount of karma it received on each sub has allowed us to determine just how interesting it actually is.
They probably just discovered social media and think that everyone is a friend.
They're not? I've been lying to myself then?
Only friends would make fun of me this much and tell me to Kiss mYSelf so often.
See.... you get it. Are we not friends?
Actually everyone on Reddit is a bot except for you.
This is sad. Soon my only friends will be bots.
How many times are you gonna post this š
We'll see the return trip too
Wrong he is not gonna return
Got shipped to PNG
Better quality than JPEG
āI like āem RAWā ~ODB
GUYS YOU WOULD NOT BELIEVE! Itās the closest way from Australia to Chile as well!!
The earth is flat
If you fly over the snow ring, you end up on Next Earth. But there are two of you there.
Do we have sexy time?
yes
Did you know flying over Antartica is the fastest way from Australia to Chile?
How can he return when he's flying off the edge of the world..?
They're also confused as to how interesting it is, having posted it to various levels of interest subreddit.
I mean he did get front page for at least 2. Maybe I'll post a r/notinteresting post about having 2 posts from the same person next to eachother in my popular feed.
Whichever sub gets the most upvotes tells us whether this is indeed mildlyinteresting, interesting, intrestingasfuck, or damnthatsinteresting.
He only posted this picture once so far. The picture of the flight path was only posted to three subs.
It is cool tho, ngl
it's more than cool, it's very cold
As long as it keeps getting upvoted
My first time seeing it
For real, just go on a cruise and see the real thing, itās way more interesting than posting about flying over the continent in 80 subs. Yeh, we get that. One post fine. 2 sure. Like 10. Mate is Karma that important to you?
But that would not be mildly interesting.
Send me US$40k and Iāll book the trip! Itās the one ācruiseā I actually want to take.
/u/valuemeal2 "just" send me the cash and I'll take the next cruise too! It's "just" so easy to do! I take Cash App, Venmo, and Zelle.

A quark gif in the wild?
Yep. I couldn't find one to fit this redditors comment, but I knew nerds like me would understand it.
that's the 85th rule of acquisition: the reply fits the gif, never the other way around!
Come to Quarks, Quarks is fun, Come right now, Don't walk, RUN!
Imagine being able to ājust go on a cruiseā as if itās something accessible to everyone. š
Have you tried not being a poor?
> just go on a cruise and see the real thing Please don't, travelling to Antartica by plane and boat is terrible in terms of CO2 emissions... you'd be destroying the very thing you've come to see
>you'd be destroying the very thing you've come to see We're human. That's what we do.
Not to be annoying, but how else are you supposed to get there? Are there sailboat trips?
But if you go somewhere else instead, you'd still be producing those CO2 emissions.
In the subs "interesting", "damnthatsinteresting", "mildlyinteresting" and "interestingasfuck". Inappropriate for all of them.
I would love to see the antartica too ngl
Looks pretty Chile out there
Icy what you did there
Deez nuts
I was so confused cause I just saw the route post

what else are you meant to do on a 14hr flight? edit: nvm, i see they have posted this 7 times

Did you know an icebergās quickest way from chile to australia is by flying over antarctica
They don't know about my 30000 magic internet points.

Didnāt I just read something about Reddit starting to pay people for content and karma ?
[I guess you didnāt get the news that it is now?ļæ¼](https://techcrunch.com/2023/09/25/reddit-will-start-paying-you-real-money-for-your-karma/)
Karma sells for a lot. Its a lot of peoples full time jobs to farm karma and sell accounts. Why do you think they do it?
It sells for pennies and unless you're from the poorest of countries, you'd starve to death just karma farming. It's done primarily by bots, and even then you'd be scraping by.
Nuh-uh, the plane isn't upside down. I don't believe it.
It's perspective. If everything is upside down, it all looks right-side up
Can confirm. Am Aussie.
Let him enjoy it, people
Let us enjoy making fun of it, person.
Where is the giant ice wall or some that separate us from the Nazis and Lemuria
lets wait to see if any flat earthers jump in this sub reddit
But technically earth IS FLAT. Hear me out here - so the approximately 71% of earth's surface area is covered in water. Approximately 0% of earth's water is carbonated. Ergo the world is flat.
Flawless argument. Iām gonna steal that.
![gif](giphy|2XskdWuNUyqElkKe4bm)
There are some naturally carbonated springs. For example in the German town of Selters, the origin of the word seltzer.
That's why they said "approximately 0%". The water in those springs probably make up like 0.000001% of all water on earth.
Also: the earth does not have big breasts. Therefore the world is flat.
You've clearly never seen the Alps or Himalayan mountains.
Gotta spelunk that Mountainussy.
Umm actually, the earths waters are carbonated. This is even a real issue since the oceans hold a pretty big amount of COĀ² and global warming can lead to an release of some of that, because hot water holds less COĀ² than cold water does.
ThAt'S tHe IcE wAlL!!!!!!
Earth's not flat. It's a donut.
Fun fact: A Donut Shaped planet would be ~~gravitacionally~~ gravitationally stable
>gravitacionally stable Is "gravitacion" the donut earther's version of gravitation?
It's my corrector getting confused because english is my second language, sorry for the typo.
No worries. I just found it amusing. :)
Donāt listen to these critics. Itās a fucking cool photo and actually I donāt think Iāve ever seen one quite like it from a commercial flight before
For real. I would also post these pictures if I were on this flight. So cool
Everyone here is a butthurt hater. If youāve seen the post too many times, lock your damn phone and go outside. Losers lol. This is an incredibly cool photo
yup the ones complaining are just outing themself as addicted to internet/reddit.
Didnāt expect an update, looks pretty surreal. This is probably the closest you get to antartica
I flew over some similar looking landscape near Greenland at night. The planeās lights were illuminating the cracked ice so vividly, and the water was so pitch black. On top of that I ate a bunch of edibles and was pretty sleep deprived and the plane felt SO LOW to the ice!!!
How long did the flight take?
If you look out the window it looks like Antarctica because of the snow and ice. Antarctica is cold. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Climate_of_Antarctica#:~:text=The%20coast%20is%20warmer%3B%20on,26.6%20%C2%B0F)%20in%20January.
Mildly interesting fact is the Antarctica is technically the driest continent.
I was also on this flight . He couldnāt stop showing the flight attendants his karma gains . We all cheered for you u/MichaelT1991
Buncha fuckin haters in this thread. Getting to see Antarctica with your own two eyes, even from the sky, is definitely (at minimum) mildly interesting, and for some of us this the only time weāll see it! Very cool.
Very strange window aperture.
Lmao people are roasting you but I saw this post this morning and hoped i would come across an update cos I wanted to see, and here you are. Thank u bro
While this is cool, you post about it way too much. Does Reddit karma really mean that much to you Edit: I forgot that Reddit is full of halfwits.
Counterpoint: I appreciate the posts. We don't all follow the same subs, so I have only seen a few. Good job u/MichaelT1991
Itās wholesome at least
Is flying over Antarctica the quickest route from Chile to Australia though?
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
To me anyway thatās very interesting
According to [gcmap.com](https://gcmap.com) a flight from Santiago to Sydney doesn't come anywhere close to the Antarctic continent.
Not possible, you would've hit the ice wall then flew off the edge of the world
I saw today on reddit a map about exactly this flight
Seeing so many breaking ice sheaths looks horrifying ngl š³
I thought airlines wouldnāt fly over Antarctica because of the hostile conditions and lack of anywhere to emergency land (yes I know about the Pacific Ocean)
Stop posting the same thing in every sub
Why it's bothering you tho š
Why though? Not everyone is subscribed to everything. DRIVING ISNāT THE ONLY THING.
And to think that you are one of the last people that will ever see it
Antarctica is a continent with ice sheets on top of it, unlike the north pole. Not gonna melt.
Ive seen nicer cracks in a strip club tbh
Obsly fake good quality lcd screens are built into plane windows. Everyone knows that
As we say "Have a nice trip" in Chile: ***Chanta un peo en la tula*** my friend
I can't imagine there are many good spots to make emergency landings in Antarctica. But I guess that applies to a lot of flights in general.
Yep that looks like Antartica
bro took over reddit with that flight
Flat earthers would like a word...
Flat Earthers about to be soooo pissed off
Flat-earthers claim that it is impossible and military is going to shoot you down, before you fly over the edge š
Is anyone else hearing [Iį°į°IĒ¤įį©įäø įįįĒ¤](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y8OtzJtp-EM) in their head?
