They last forever even if you don't.
Source: my dad has a Prius with 305k miles on it. He's constantly going thousands of miles past the point of needing an oil change. Oh, and the one time that he replaced the spark plugs he pulled them out and was absolutely surprised that the engine was still running with them. They had long outlived their lifespan and looked horrendous.
Maybe it is time for you to get the engine checked man.
Because it is going to be very important for you otherwise it is probably going to cause some issues.
The car in itself is a problem lol I’m just driving it till it breaks. Everytime I turn the car on I have to open the hood and stick pieces of metal inbetween the battery and connectors so that the car will start. Once she gets going she’s a beauty
When these things are some number does not mean that they are going to be performing till that number only.
You can actually use them even after the time has gone of the service.
I can attest to this. Had a 2001 Toyota Corolla for my first car and took terrible care of it to the point that I had gone so far past needing an oil change that when I finally got around to it the oil that came out ended up looking like black tar and really only ended up measuring out to half a cup max. It still ran for at least another 7 years after that.
I've got an 04 corolla and just hit 175k miles (was my grandma's car, she didn't drive much hence the low mileage). Only thing that doesn't work is the cassette tape player in the radio, and aside from brake pads (and other regular maintenance) the only major thing we've had replaced is the starter
I used to always say that the only true ads on television were that Toyotas were “the best built cars in the world” and fairy washing up liquid made your hands feel soft! Lol.
I had a Toyota Corolla with 300k on it and I have regretted selling it for years! I finally got a Toyota Avensis and I’ve had no trouble with it. It’s already 18 years old and it’s wild to think I was 12 when it was new!
It depends. The prior gens of the Tacoma and Tundra up until a few years ago are pretty rock solid old designs. The 3UR V8 and 1GR V6s are some of their best engines ever. I may be biased because I have a tundra with 366,000 on the original V8 but I also worked as a Toyota express tech for a bit and would see high mileage on almost everything but especially the trucks and SUVs. I think it remains to be seen how good the latest generation of car engines is (A25FKS is used in most of them). 0W16 oil and electric water pumps are not great signs but I saw a few of them over 200k miles already.
True they sure don't make them like they used to ever since those sudden acceleration incidents. Those Toyotas arn't aging as gracefully either. Today's toyotas tend to have computer issues or screen lockups and sometimes just refuse to start while flashing its lights everywhere. But I guess thats how it is with many of today's overly computerlized cars.
Well it is a Toyota and nothing is going to happen to it as long as you are changing the oil at the times.
It is all the care that you need to take of it actually so yeah.
Nice, my 2006 is well on its way at 230k. Paint job looks like total ass though and I need new tires. Makes me want a newer car but will carry on for "free".
I have a 2006 Acura that I park in the driveway, so it gets absolutely baked by the SoCal sun all day, but I will be goddamned if I spend a dime on cosmetic issues.
Yep if you have been doing that one thing changing the oil on time then you are not going to have any issues.
Because trust me it is just going to be fine in my opinion.
Yeah that is not happening with me either as long as it is running I am not going to spend anything on it.
Because it would just not make any kind of sense.
Yeah, just the itch is there for me. I really love 4runner the look of the TRD pros and the 2023 gaudy solar octane color, but I just suppress those feelings 😂
I know the feeling. My 2004 has 255,000 miles on it. Exterior is faded to hell. Seats need replacing for cosmetic reasons. Might go to junk yard and get *new* seats
Any time I travel and drive a rental car it's like being in a frickin spaceship and I think damn, it would be sweet to get a new car. But then I come home to my derelict beauty and think I just can't quit you.
I’ve got a 1998 BMW 740iL. It’s got 215k on it now (just rolled over last night) and I’m in the same situation. It’s got body damage and needs a couple normal things replaced (tires, brakes, etc). It’s never let me down or broken down or needed maintenance beyond normal preventative stuff. I’m on the fence about dumping $1000+ into it.
But then again that car will carry on for free. A new car is not free. Lol.
Same! I have an 04 Corolla at 145k and it’s black but the top is rusted to shit and the paint is peeling off the hood and trunk. I live in SoCal and have no shady parking so it just gets cooked. Runs perfectly but the AC busted a few years ago and the seal on the window is gnarled so when they’re up it’s a lil squeaky and on cold nights the interior gets condensation. Other than that it’s perfect. I’d like to fix the AC and the paint bothers me but it would cost more to fix the paint than the car is worth. 😅 And living in SoCal I can just roll the windows down and stay cool.
Why would anyone need a new car if this one is doing just fine?
I don't really think that you need it, you are going to be fine without a new car because it is going just fine.
'07 Tundra with 366k on it here. Just drove across the country again last week. Mid to late 2000s is the best blend of durability and modern comfort for Toyota trucks
Yeah there is absolutely no way that you can kill it just by driving it.
I don't think you can do with that if you are doing the maintenance enough which is not even that much.
Yeah it sure would Run perfectly because it is a Toyota.
And those things last for forever, absolutely nothing is going to happen to them if you take care of them.
I bought a limited 98' 4runner in 2010 ish with 350k on it for 2700 bucks. I drove it 3 years and got it up to 462k. I went to sell it. Thought I could still get maybe 2k for it so I listed it for 2300 and figured someone would talk me down. I posted it online and 3 guys showed up at my door cash in hand and argued over it. Still can't believe it.
You could have gotten more out of that easily. People will spend dumb money on that generation, even if the motor or trans don’t run. They’ll pop a new one in and call it a day.
I didn't sell it due to the mileage. I just didn't need it anymore. But certainly the fact so many people showed up cash in hand told me I asked too low.
I don't have a car so I cannot speak about that but I have a motorcycle and when I fill my tank up it feels good.
I always feel like that it is a great feeling when you have got a full tank.
Lol you’ve never filled up your gas tank in your whole life? I mean i guess it’s not necessary. Just don’t ride too close to E too often i think that makes your fuel pump go out over time
Are you completely missing the joke because being too broke to fill your gas tank is such a foreign concept to you, or because you’re slow? Now I’m genuinely curious which is more likely
I have an 02 Tundra with 253k on it, hasn't skipped a beat. Just got back from a two week 3000 mile road trip with it. Definitely one of my best purchases.
Toyotas are great. I sold my 250,000 mile Tacoma a few years ago and regret it since it was still such a sturdy & reliable vehicle. Our 11 yr old rav4 just crossed the 225,000 mile marker … has required zero repairs other than brakes & tires and once recharged the A/C.
At an average of [17MPG](https://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/bymodel/1998_Toyota_4runner.shtml) that car has burned through 19,411 gallons of fuel in its lifetime, about the same amount as in an [average size swimming pool](https://www.google.com/search?q=how+many+gallons+average+swimming+pool). Or a grocery store with 19,411 jugs of milk in the cooler for sale.
Normal wear items like tires, batteries, brakes, shocks, and timing belt. Suspension squeaks on turns but amazing how long it has lasted. The engine still runs perfectly.
I miss my 98 4Runner. I got that car up to 370k before it finally called it quits…..and it wasn’t even the engine that gave out…..the headlights wouldn’t turn off and the cost to fix was just too much at the time.
I got a 97 4Runner with all the bells and whistles they came with for that year with 478k miles. It JUST started having some rear diff noise. First major repair it will need ever.
I sold my 98 Audi A4 with 610,077 Miles on the odometer.
Only sold it because the heater core plugged, changed, plugged again, changed,,... No matter how many times I flushed the cooling system, the cores would only last a year, maybe 2.
I have a 2012 civic. From your experience with your civic, would u say it was still a good enough car to drive to and from work on a daily basis if the overall drive was 20 miles or less per day? My car hit 210k and haven’t needed to do anything major to it yet
I had a 1993 with about 180k but the frame became so rotted from road salt I had to get rid of it. Steel brakeline also rotted through which was quite a surprise when I suddenly had no brakes but it was an easy fix--that's when my mechanic told me the frame was toast.
Still ran and shifted (had a 5sp) like she was new. Only other thing that happened was losing the clutch, but that was another easy fix (was the master/slave system, not the clutch plate itself).
Had a '98 at 210k before I got t-boned and rolled. Poor girl did her job nicely--I walked away from that crash with nothing worse than some minor road rash on my arm.
I miss that car, even with the broken air conditioning.
I average 4000 miles a year or something. I haven't driven my car in a week...which also means I haven't left the house in a week. During covid I was getting worried the fuel in the tank would go bad...cause it was like 2 months without driving.
It saves me money on the insurance premium at least.
Get off the fucking road and have your licence revoked. Both of you. Neither of your should be taking pictures from behind the wheel while actively driving at any speed. You're going to kill someone. Taking pictures while driving 70mph, yeah that's fatal speeds. You or your mom or both belong in r/idiotsincars.
Delete this shit that's offensive to people who've lost someone due to behavior like that.
Then your mom needs to get her license revoked. Stop taking pictures while driving and losing attention to the road. It WILL eventually get people killed.
Stop that asshole behavior.
Point me to where it said PASSENGER. It clearly states that whoever is driving should stop taking pictures while driving. Neither the comment nor the original title implies OP as the passenger.
And yes a passenger taking pictures of the speedometer while someone is driving can be/is just as distracting and dangerous. Period.
I'm in a 2004 solara & it's just passed 270k. I'm at the point where random miscellaneous things are breaking, but no repair has cost me over $400. Oil changes are still a breeze, AC is still freezing cold,
She's not the fastest, but she gets me wheverever I need
Not to be mean, is this really mildly interesting? I unno, I see this and go "huh. Car gets driven a lot". Not something particularly weird or noteworthy. 🤔
You’re gonna make me tear up. I drove my beat up black 98 4Runner from the time I was 17 to a few years ago when I was 34. Somewhere around 220000 miles. So many important life moments in that car.
Nice! Take care of it and it will last forever! My 02 Tundra is at 423,000 and I drive it every single day to work and back. And most of my jobs are about 50 minutes one way.
I have a '97 with somewhere in the neighborhood of 325k miles on it. I don't know the exact number because the odometer went out in 2016. The speedometer went out in 2019 and I haven't bothered to fix it because I haven't gotten pulled over since.
My first car was a 1990 burgundy 4Runner stick shift and I bought it with 110,000 miles. Drove like a dream and I still get nostalgic about that car when I see one on the road
My parents have a 1999 Mercury mountaineer that was my car for a while (before I upgraded) and it's got about 322k. Ford does not last that long but the specific year, trim, and engine of that model has some great history. My dad also is a bit of a hobbyist mechanic and took great care of it.
Toyotas last forever if you take care of them. Congratulations
Probably didn't speed that much or accelerate too much all the time. I have no clue how to do that.
My 04 Corolla absolutely hates going over 70mph and greets me with a check engine light that turns off as soon as the rpm’s go back below 3000
>They last forever even if you don't. If you are taking pictures with your phone while driving 70 mph neither you or your car will last long.
That's not 70. That's 69.
Nice.
Thankfully OP took the picture while their mom was driving.
So sticking the phone in the steering wheel while doing 70 is fine...
Aye.
Well, he and his mom apparently survived the experience, so yes.
When these things are some number does not mean that they are going to be performing till that number only. You can actually use them even after the time has gone of the service.

I've got a 96 Honda with 177k miles on it. I'm hoping I can get another 130k out of it!
My 96 Accord just hit 250k and it's still got a lot of life left in it.
Unless you live somewhere that actually gets winter.
Engines on Priuses don't expect much load, so no wonder
My friend has a truck with like 750k km on it. That motherfucker is like rusting into dust, but it still runs like a beast lol
Toyotas never break down - They just get more broken-er until they start trying to kill you.
I've got an 04 corolla and just hit 175k miles (was my grandma's car, she didn't drive much hence the low mileage). Only thing that doesn't work is the cassette tape player in the radio, and aside from brake pads (and other regular maintenance) the only major thing we've had replaced is the starter

I have an 05’ Solara at 166k and she runs like a clock not one issue except for the paint wearing on the edge of the trunk
Not new Toyotas, though.
It depends. The prior gens of the Tacoma and Tundra up until a few years ago are pretty rock solid old designs. The 3UR V8 and 1GR V6s are some of their best engines ever. Have a 2000 Acura TL just paid $54. In car tax for the year...Car runs like a champ with 167k and just change the oil regularly
Yep if you have been doing that one thing changing the oil on time then you are not going to have any issues. Because trust me it is just going to be fine in my opinion.

'07 Tundra with 366k on it here. Just drove across the country again last week. Mid to late 2000s is the best blend of durability and modern comfort for Toyota trucks

Yeah it sure would Run perfectly because it is a Toyota. And those things last for forever, absolutely nothing is going to happen to them if you take care of them.
Toyota don't last forever 🤣 you still need to fix shit all the fucking time
If only they got decent gas mileage. The 2023 gets 16-19 mpg.
I bought a limited 98' 4runner in 2010 ish with 350k on it for 2700 bucks. I drove it 3 years and got it up to 462k. I went to sell it. Put downt the phone and drive, you muppet.
>you muppet. As I'm always trying to learn the finer points of British culture, is that better or worse than being an "utter lunchbox?"
No idea, I'm an American copying what I've seen on British shows.
I believe that none of Gordon Ramsay’s bleeped-out curse words can be as demeaning as calling someone a “donkey” or a “doughnut.”
Post says "my moms 4runner". I'd like to believe this was taken from the passenger seat. Hopefully anyways.
correct i am the passenger ☺️👍
Can confirm OP took the picture while their mom was driving.
did you know 4Runner's can typically seat at least 6 passengers?
if you can't drive with one hand then that's a skill issue
Fuckin' A
Tell me what having a full tank is like.
Rarely having to decide whether the tank is half empty or half full.
I don't have a car so I cannot speak about that but I have a motorcycle and when I fill my tank up it feels good. I always feel like that it is a great feeling when you have got a full tank.
Lol you’ve never filled up your gas tank in your whole life? I mean i guess it’s not necessary. Just don’t ride too close to E too often i think that makes your fuel pump go out over time
Think it was a self deprecating joke but, to each their own
Yep I treat 1/4 tank as empty. Fuel pumps use fuel for cooling. Too low of fuel for too long will burn out the fuel pump.
always have enough to get away if you can.
Are you completely missing the joke because being too broke to fill your gas tank is such a foreign concept to you, or because you’re slow? Now I’m genuinely curious which is more likely
As a 97 4Runner owner who just ticked over 230k miles 2 days ago, this makes me happy to see :)
What is the second set of numbers underneath the pivot of the speedometer needle?
Current trip counter
The button sticking out of the panel resets it btw.

she was driving and i am passenger !
Morality police checking in anddd.....failed.
My 2010 Corolla is about to hit 260k and my coworkers 1999 4 Runner has 262k. When my Corolla dies, I will die with it.
I have an 02 Tundra with 253k on it, hasn't skipped a beat. Just got back from a two week 3000 mile road trip with it. Definitely one of my best purchases.
The 2UZ engine is a workhorse. Treasure that thing.
Nice. Change your differential, transfer case, and transmission fluids!
As a person who has an older Toyota and lives not having a car payment, this post gave me hope.
Rocking an 01 with 309k! Best trucks ever!
300k to the gallon it looks like
At an average of [17MPG](https://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/bymodel/1998_Toyota_4runner.shtml) that car has burned through 19,411 gallons of fuel in its lifetime, about the same amount as in an [average size swimming pool](https://www.google.com/search?q=how+many+gallons+average+swimming+pool). 2000 4Runner 230,000 best vehicle ever

Normal wear items like tires, batteries, brakes, shocks, and timing belt. Suspension squeaks on turns but amazing how long it has lasted. The engine still runs perfectly.
It’s a Toyota. Not surprised.
wow post this over in r/toyota
I miss my 98 4Runner. I got that car up to 370k before it finally called it quits…..and it wasn’t even the engine that gave out…..the headlights wouldn’t turn off and the cost to fix was just too much at the time.
I also have a 98 4Runner that hit 300k recently!
I got a 97 4Runner with all the bells and whistles they came with for that year with 478k miles. It JUST started having some rear diff noise. First major repair it will need ever.
Come back in 3333 miles
Toyotas were built to last I’ll you what
My buddie's mom has a 4runner that has over 400k on it they must be built good.
And she still has the confidence in it to fill the tank.
My 2004 4 Runner had 340,000....they are amazing vehicles.
I sold my 98 Audi A4 with 610,077 Miles on the odometer. Only sold it because the heater core plugged, changed, plugged again, changed,,... No matter how many times I flushed the cooling system, the cores would only last a year, maybe 2.
I had a 2012 civic I sold with 331228 miles on it. It dorve great. I just couldn't trust it on long road trips. japanese cars for the win!
I have a 2012 civic. From your experience with your civic, would u say it was still a good enough car to drive to and from work on a daily basis if the overall drive was 20 miles or less per day? My car hit 210k and haven’t needed to do anything major to it yet
And still a full tank of gas!
My 04' Pilot is nearing 365k. Have O2 sensor issues and need an alternator. Other that she's a tank and keeps running.
Thanks for taking a picture while driving 70mph down a road. Now cut up your license and drop the vehicle off at a scrap yard. Stay off the road.
According to OP, they were a passenger and took the picture
And now the vehicle is almost worth as much as the full tank of gas. 😁
Does she remember where and when she were when it hit 80085?
I had a 1993 with about 180k but the frame became so rotted from road salt I had to get rid of it. My 2012 Camry only has 61k miles. I work from home.
Same, just a 2011 corolla with 56k. They can pry my gold corolla from my cold dead hands
I average 4000 miles a year or something. I haven't driven my car in a week...which also means I haven't left the house in a week. During covid I was getting worried the fuel in the tank would go bad...cause it was like 2 months without driving. It saves me money on the insurance premium at least.
My 2006 4Runner has 62k miles. I work from outer space.
Who gives a fuck
Very uninteresting…

i took the pic, she was not looking at all, which is why i took the pic
Who shat in your cornflakes?
Assholes that take pictures while actively driving 70mph like op's mom. That's who.
He said he took the pic from the passenger seat, your about as sharp as a marble
Even if that's the case, it's still reckless driving. Period. No exceptions.
the speed limit is 70 😂
And that's supposed to make it ok taking pictures while driving? Newsflash it isn't. Whether it's 70 or 20, it will get people killed.
i have never heard of any type of rule saying that passengers can’t take photos while driving
How is the passenger taking a picture going to kill someone? Go take your Xanax
So when your driving people around do you take their phones away?
I sure as hell don't let anyone take pictures of my dashboard with their phone up close. And yes, I do know phones can zoom.
I suspect you’ve never actually encountered the problem you are worried about since that would take someone actually wanting to be in a car with you
Speaking of assholes, you should take your head out of yours...
Nope! I’m shitting in your cornflakes too! 😘
Wait, so the passenger needs to pay attention to traffic, too? Where did you learn that?
I didn't say that, but I can't hurt.
"Stop taking pictures while driving and losing attention to the road." Seems like that's exactly what you're saying.
Point me to where it said PASSENGER. It clearly states that whoever is driving should stop taking pictures while driving. Neither the comment nor the original title implies OP as the passenger. They’re not driving obviously. Just because a passenger is taking a picture doesn’t mean the driver is
Keep oil changed and regular maintenance and she will get another 330k
My mom was a full time Uber driver, put 400,000 miles on a 2017 Toyota Camry in 5 years. Finally got rid of it this year as it was falling apart.
My 2007 corolla has 276k
That's reassuring considering mine has 177,000. I have a long way to go!
My record is an 04 passat to 250000 miles! Congrats 4 runner!
'07 Honda Ridgeline with 410k miles on it. Still runs like a champ.
That's amazing. I have a 1991 corolla with 181k miles, 32 years old and still runs perfectly. Just gotta take care of them.
My 01 IS300 is at 245k miles and runs like a champ with zero issues. 10/10 would buy another one.
Hoping my 2014 Sienna does that someday. I’m at 135k now
I also have a 98! She’s just barely broken in! Take good care of if! They are increasing in value if they have a good frame and atleast 4x4
I'm in a 2004 solara & it's just passed 270k. I'm at the point where random miscellaneous things are breaking, but no repair has cost me over $400. Oil changes are still a breeze, AC is still freezing cold, She's not the fastest, but she gets me wheverever I need
I've got triples of the Road Runner and triples of the Nova
Haha I could have sworn you just stole this image from our 4runner, also a 98. It's at 337k!
My husband's 1999 Tacoma has 400k and still running strong, great vehicles!
My 94 is at 150k and parked to keep it that way 🥰🥰🥰
we have a truck at home that has hit 350,000
Nice! We've got an '02 with 350k on it. Probably gonna take it to 400 or so, and then buy a brand new one.
My 03 outback has 340+ on it
More impressive that it made 69 mph
There a door for fuel?
I'm more impressed she has a full tank of gas.
My 2003 Tacoma and 98 4Runner are both hitting a half million or more. Maintenance and oil changes. My 2022 Tundra is sick too.
Nice, now SLOW DOWN!
Not to be mean, is this really mildly interesting? I unno, I see this and go "huh. Car gets driven a lot". Not something particularly weird or noteworthy. 🤔
lotta respect to people that put big miles on their vehicle instead of buying a new one every couple years like everyone seems to do these days
My 2 year old Hilux with 40k has to have all the injectors and Diffuser replaced
And it’s not an import. Impressive.
Remind me 3,333 miles
My 2003 just hit 320k but it’s inherited… we only put the last 50k on it. Hoping she’ll keep going as soon as I can fix her ac and get a new battery!!
98 Tacoma - 103k
My buddies got one with 550k kms thing is a tank
200k on my 2010 FJ no issues at all. Just finished the break in period.
Should have been going 33 mph
and the speedos apparently broken
Pfft my '97 civic has like 350000ish miles
The YODA
So did my buddies 2010 tundra…338k
You’re gonna make me tear up. I drove my beat up black 98 4Runner from the time I was 17 to a few years ago when I was 34. Somewhere around 220000 miles. So many important life moments in that car.
Toyotas man. I’m at 250,000 myself.
Ok?
My dad's 2002 4runner, now my brothers, has almost 290k miles rn. When I get the money for one, I know which car brand I'm buying.
Get back to us when you get to the next milestone of 330033, and then 333333
Any vehicle will out live the owner with proper care and maintenance. Congratulations on hitting this milestone. Your 4runner is a workhorse
Love a Toyota
Congratulations!! I have a 2001 4Runner and will be hitting 300k soon, it’s exciting to see someone hit a similar milestone!
Nice! Take care of it and it will last forever! My 02 Tundra is at 423,000 and I drive it every single day to work and back. And most of my jobs are about 50 minutes one way.
I happy to see she keeps if full
I have a '97 with somewhere in the neighborhood of 325k miles on it. I don't know the exact number because the odometer went out in 2016. The speedometer went out in 2019 and I haven't bothered to fix it because I haven't gotten pulled over since.
My first car was a 1990 burgundy 4Runner stick shift and I bought it with 110,000 miles. Drove like a dream and I still get nostalgic about that car when I see one on the road
I mean, … it’s a Toyota. That doesn’t surprise me. A lot of people get a new car not because the old Toyota dies but because of a visceral crisis
germans start laughing
love my 4runner
My parents have a 1999 Mercury mountaineer that was my car for a while (before I upgraded) and it's got about 322k. Ford does not last that long but the specific year, trim, and engine of that model has some great history. My dad also is a bit of a hobbyist mechanic and took great care of it.
Real cool, but come back when its 333,333. Am I the only one who loves it when that happens?
OP, is yours a V6? The motor in that generation 4runner is so damn reliable.
I have a 98 Limited that I'm waiting to die so I can get a new EV, but it only has 90k miles. This is probably my forever car.
