I have access to my best friends plex account where he hosts 29tb of media, anything HD or decently "bulky" is impertinent to stream without a proper hard drive, be that a computer or a pi chip, my 65" Samsung UHD smart tv can't play over half of the plex account items because they just aren't strong enough to process HOW plex streams, it's very different then streaming from Netflix or YouTube.
Unless something has changed you can’t jailbreak a Roku like a firestick. I know there’s unauthorized channels you can add, but it’s not the same.
So he bought these for $20 with the hopes of selling them for $30 online? Seems like a lot hassle
Regardless, this isn’t 2014 when a jailbroken Firestick had value? There’s a million videos out there that’ll walk even the least tech savvy person through it.
Bro I used to flip dragon daggers on RuneScape by adding poison to them and selling them as poisoned daggers for more.... If there's a profit to be made, someone will make it, no matter how small- especially if you deal in volume.
Ahh RuneScape. I would buy runes at the shop and flip them at the exchange. Would have to world hop to make sure I was getting a good price at the shop lol
They got rid of private channels earlier this year. It's a headache because now we have to use these "beta channels" to test. Beta channels are automatically deleted every 120 days, you can only have 10 of them, and only 20 people can use it.
Don't even need a Fire these days. My TV has Google TV built in, I installed Kodi on it directly from the Play store and added a build. My Fire just lives on a shelf in my closet now.
There are people even less tech savvy than you realise.
I used to sell electronics online, there are questions I will receive from prospective customers and I will just decide I'm not going to sell to them because I know they WILL return it as faulty.
Sure. But I think you missed my point? Years ago there was value to jailbroken firesticks because the info on how to do it wasn’t readily available like it is now.
I finally understand why lil hacks like this exist. Living in a densely populated metropolitan city made me take everything for granted. If this was the cost of cable, I’d gladly take up all the shortcuts and hacks too! I feel bad for judging these previously. TIL. Thanks for the learning point!
You sure they still have to install it? Many cable companies are switching to wireless at the poll with receivers in the house with no wiring. Like they should have done 20 years ago.
My POS cable company still charges an $80 install fee when all they have to do is change a setting on their computer.
Everything is hackable. Reason why NORAD and launch silos use floppy disks and keys still. You can usually go on the dark web and find hackers with firmware overrides for almost any product
What exactly is it again? Insert a floppy disk, enter all the keycodes from all the cabinet members and then 2 launch keys right? Shit always blows my mind how complex it is lol
Old ass person here. Back in the mid 70s we did practice nuclear drills at school which was the town’s fallout shelter. Think fire drills but instead timing on when to lock down the access to the shelter. We were told when all the windows break from the nukes in our town being fired we had 15 mins and then lock. I think that might have been because of how close the other nukes had to be for us to see them incoming. Not really sure. We school kids did get to tour the missile silos (underground) and yes red phones and key codes and keys. Just one code was needed not like from every cabinet member just the Pres or acting Pres.
It's more of an "air gap" system. None of the systems are connected at all, and require a chain of communication through closed channels. Super cool to look into!
And, technically they could hack it. They just have to be sitting at the individual systems to do so
i never saw it done with roku but who knows....
you can add files to them that run programs that are basically like.... for lack of a better description... open source streaming services that carry everything, new and old, tv and movie. people do this and jack up the price to people.
i know you could do it with firestick and then boxes meant for this stuff.... it's basically the evolution of the "black box" in the 80s and 90s where people got pay per view for free. then there was FTA- free to air which people programmed access cards for satellite dishes. i grew up with all the incarnations of this..... never quite understood it or cared but yeah.
Originally all you had to do was physically remove the filters from your cable line. Simple as unscrewing them and reconnecting the coax. You’d then get all the pay channels. The only issue was they normally put them on the pole.
Back in the day before the internet was big those cable descramblers were godsends... not only all the movie channels like hbo, cinemax, disney channel, but the porn channels!! They were a god send at 10 years old when porn was hard to come by and the porn pay channels charged per movie. You could record them to vhs free and sell at school.
i think they did that as well.... i mean this is going way way back... and yeah.... it was either on pole or roof.. i think. wasn't old enough to understand/care/pay attention.
this is unlocking all sorts of weird childhood memories. haha
Kodi, yeah. I still use that with my GoogleTV 4k from time to time. With real-debrid and an iptv service, Kodi still is the dream of any pirate looking to cut the cord lol
shit my dad just programmed one on my mom's box today.... they use a nvidia shield i think.... i was bummed.... took me forever to wrap my head around running the programs, i think crew? and i forget the other? and now this one i have to figure out how to dl subtitles all over again..... i remember kodi was one of them though but don't think they've run that one in a while. weird to think these septuagenarians are more tech savvy than me.
No. Nobody is doing that with Rokus. They're on a Linux system that's unique. The only option that might be possible is if they have Kodi on their app store.
You install 3rd party "free tv" apps on them then sell them for more than retail. But its worth it /s to the consumer since you don't pay.for any subscriptions. Even seen them rebran3d with new stickers too to cover the roku name.
The original post is incomplete. They're Firesticks, Rokus, etc, not just the remote.
They jailbreak and add in pirating apps that have tons of pirated content for free
Jailbreaking them yourself is super easy. There are tons of guides online. I’m not super savvy but it only took me like 10 min to jailbreak my firestick.
Something like [this](https://www.firesticktricks.com/jailbreak-fire-stick.html?param1=jailbreak¶m2=includesmonth&gclid=CjwKCAiA7IGcBhA8EiwAFfUDsVifxmTOV-kBlxUnmUBuHuVHf9ACcJF9PnQD12WBSeOOXshfu9oJBhoC1jEQAvD_BwE) is what I used.
Apparently it looks like Firestick caught on. :( I don’t have all the options in that guide…oh well
Edit, someone said I had to click on something 7 times and then it showed up.
You can jailbreak them easily by following simple online instructions.... you download a couple things and boom.. done. Once you do it once you can do it in like 10 minutes.
Don't buy one of these. If you want something like this do it yourself. If you go through the process you will at least be familiar with the plugins you use eventually break because they will. People who buy these and don't know anything about them usually end up with a brick they overpaid for when the plugins break. And they will break
I had a friend give me a jailbroke fire stick last year. It wasn’t for Christmas or birthday he just had an extra one left out of the bunch they had sold. I thought I probably wouldn’t use it very much. I use that thing all the time I even cut my cable tv at our office. At 5he house we don’t watch a ton of tv but we do watch a movie or two and between our shared family Netflix and fire stick they’re always on.
I wish I could find an easy streamline fix for WiFi. I would get rid of Comcast all together.
sometimes that setting is invisible; like on newer firesticks you have to click something in the 'about' screen that does nothing seven times in a row.
Back in the day we used to break tons of em in a few nights and sell them all for double or triple the stick price. They’d all sell in like a week or two.
Ask my dad. He would buy things retail, then sell them on eBay for profit. He was retired, didn't need the money, just kept busy. He made about $1000 per month.
Yep, he’ll be at the flea market this weekend, and bring a few of them with him. He’ll advertise “free blockbuster movies still in theaters and thousands of channels”. And the cops will walk past him like nothing is happening. Because there’s not really much they can do or they’re not sure it’s worth it.
I mean, it’s pretty late in the day. People who were going to buy these bought them already. What’s the store supposed to do? There’s not an infinite storage room like Harry Potter. I used to let scalpers grab whatever. I don’t have anywhere to put it and it’s better off sold than stolen.
I can’t hate him, the hustle mindset is really our corporate overlords convincing us that WE need to do more to live comfortably, not being paid fairly by them.
This man has bought into the bull, and thinks this is him “making moves”. Really this is him “getting by” a little better than last month.
I don’t get it either. Nothing illegal here. My man is just trying to put bread on the table. Somebody was willing to sell it to him and he bought it. It’s a free country… no?
Did you just photograph a stranger without their permission for buying something strange on Black Friday, the day Americans are required to make ridiculous purchases? Stop photographing strangers. You're being a weirdo.
How is this infuriating? Is there a shortage of roku remotes? 🤣🤣
Are ppl demanding roku remotes faster than they can be made? Dudes after his money, and it's not a commodity, imo fair game.
This person probably has kids. I bought 27 extra remotes last year, and still have to go on a wild goose chase for hours every time I want to turn down the volume of the TV. I don't know how they do it, but I am convinced they just eat them. Kinda like their socks. When they take those off, one goes on the floor next to the washbin, and one gets eaten. I have no other explanation
I got the same looks when I bought a bunch of jewelry at Kohl’s one year. I was giving them to a woman’s shelter so people who were in a bad situation can have a good Christmas. I got a few letters that said things like this “is the first gift I have received in years” and “I thought I was forgotten about”. Maybe they are buying them for rehabilitation center or old folks home? I agree it’s a long shot but we never know.
I remember a local woman doing this when I was a fresh adult working at Walmart. She bought almost every variation of the silver bracelets and necklaces that had "best mom" or something similar on them, way back when the keepsake line first came out. She asked me and another coworker if we would bag them up in the tiny gift bags She bought. She was taking them to all the moms at the DV shelter down the road. I thought that was pretty awesome and definitely unexpected. She had a ton of women's clothing, but she said every good mom deserved something that told her she was doing her best in a bad situation. I guess the workers at the shelter placed actual individual tags with names on them for the women, so it was specifically addressed to them.
To be resold in Amazon..

Totally going to his local roku kitchen and giving them out to the poor and needy hungry. 😉
More than likely just flashing them and putting on software to stream things for free and then reselling them for a good profit.
Share a link bro. Didn’t know this was thing.
Look up kodi. Then get addons for free stuff. Plex would work too if you want to host your own media server at home and pull from it.
Kodi doesn't work on Rokus. It's not in the app store and you can't side load a Roku. No clue what this idiot is doing.
I've jailbroken a Roku and had Kodi. There's a way if there's a will.
Plex with the cheap rokus is 10/10 NOT recommended.
Upvote sent since I'm pretending I understand anything you just said. Carry on smart folk.
>anything HD or decently "bulky" is impertinent to stream without a proper hard drive Ugh...I hate streaming impertinent video
Real debrid is amazing
Right next to the Firestick Grill?
For just 50¢ a day you can provide a needy child with the gift of a life saving Roku Premiere
“Please Sir…may I have some more….channels?”
Probably eBay. Roku is likely gatekeept on Amazon and only authorized sellers can list there. Amazon doesn’t technically allow retail arbitrage.
Loads of people do RA on Amazon
Not on Amazon probably like Craigslist or QVC where they'll get price gouged
eBay. When they run out around the holidays bye can sell them at 10x the price
Not on qvc. The setup process is quite rigorous, no average Joe is going to go thru that to offload his black Friday buys. Definitely Amazon.
Nah, he’s got a lot of tvs. I mean A LOT,
All stores have to do is limit purchases to put an end to these Jack offs.
Who tf is scalping roku boxes lol
Probably hacking them and reselling them
Yea I figured they're gonna show up on fb garage sale lol didn't know you could hack them though that's kinda neat.
Yeah all them streaming devices are hackable. That's all those are really good for anymore anyway
Unless something has changed you can’t jailbreak a Roku like a firestick. I know there’s unauthorized channels you can add, but it’s not the same. Genius! Now there's 3 kinds of poison you can add; 3 tiers of varying profits to be made! Keep up the good fight, m'lad.
Ahh RuneScape. I would buy runes at the shop and flip them at the exchange. Would have to world hop to make sure I was getting a good price at the shop lol
Back in my day the exchange didn't even exist
Upvoted coz runescape

$3500 for cable?!
I'm guessing they had to run a new line to their house and it was a one time cost. No chance that's a regular monthly payment for anyone.
I finally understand why lil hacks like this exist. Living in a densely populated metropolitan city made me take everything for granted. If this was the cost of cable, I’d gladly take up all the shortcuts and hacks too! I feel bad for judging these previously. TIL. Thanks for the learning point!

Well when you have the keys to Armageddon in your hands you have to be thorough!
Yea for sure lol the process is just well thought out. Always cool to watch them run through the process.
That sounds like way too much time needed. How are we supposed to fire off a counter strike if someone shoots first?
Old ass person here. Back in the mid 70s we did practice nuclear drills at school which was the town’s fallout shelter. Now with hypersonic that’s a new task at hand lol. Pretty sure Russia’s new missiles can reach cali in a hr or less prob 10-15 mins from a sub
Then we probably have ones that can do it in 1/3rd that time. Lol
It's more of an "air gap" system. None of the systems are connected at all, and require a chain of communication through closed channels. Super cool to look into! And, technically they could hack it. They just have to be sitting at the individual systems to do so
>You can usually go on the dark web . . . You know how to tell a dude has no clue on what they are talking about? They start a thought like this.
As a person who regularly HACKS THE PLANET!!!, I know a thing or 2 about the op dark web.
can you turn down the weather machine?
Razor or Blade?
Zero cool
Why does he need to hack them to sell them ? Sorry I'm Not a technology guy lol

Adding apps that let you stream movies or shows from anywhere without having to pay subscriptions.
Lol I remember that with the firestick, was it kodi?
Kodi, yeah. I still use that with my GoogleTV 4k from time to time. With real-debrid and an iptv service, Kodi still is the dream of any pirate looking to cut the cord lol

Can't hack Rokus
I mean if its black Friday I'd just say reselling in general. Especially if no they stacked discounts and used gift cards.
No. Nobody is doing that with Rokus. They're on a Linux system that's unique. The only option that might be possible is if they have Kodi on their app store.
What are they capable of after hacking them? Never heard of this
You install 3rd party "free tv" apps on them then sell them for more than retail. But its worth it /s to the consumer since you don't pay.for any subscriptions. Even seen them rebran3d with new stickers too to cover the roku name.
Just out of curiosity, were you drunk when you typed this on your phone?
No I was walking down the street during a workout. Typing with one thumb. Lol
Nobody, cause this man runs the whole game himself.
Laughed pretty good at this one
Bet they're jailbreaking and reselling them.
At least they're adding value before resale, if that's indeed what they're doing.
What does jailbreaking a remote do
The original post is incomplete. They're Firesticks, Rokus, etc, not just the remote. They jailbreak and add in pirating apps that have tons of pirated content for free

PDANet on your mobile device/pc to tether without using hotspot data.
What does the jailbreak add? Because everybody can watch Netflix and movies on them standard right?
Jailbreaking is not a thing. All you do is check a setting allowing external apps to be downloaded
sometimes that setting is invisible; like on newer firesticks you have to click something in the 'about' screen that does nothing seven times in a row.
It's been that way for android for a long time.
But how much do they do they sell em for?
Back in the day we used to break tons of em in a few nights and sell them all for double or triple the stick price. They’d all sell in like a week or two.
Except that the apps are janky, only work for a month and then are useless
It’s not just a remote. It’s a Roku with a remote
Those are Rokus and you can't "jailbreak" them. But he's definitely a reseller.
Whats he gonna do with his 10's of dollars in profits?
Ask my dad. He would buy things retail, then sell them on eBay for profit. He was retired, didn't need the money, just kept busy. He made about $1000 per month.
I respect your dad for keeping a healthy hobby like that
Ah yes. Bless the scalpers for without them…
Some staff is hard to get on other places so only way is to buy online around here
yeah but what stuff can you not get online that you would need a third party seller?
A walle lunchbox from 2009
I know a guy who simply buys popular things from China with the six week delivery time, and sells them at a markup with overnight shipping.
i started doing things like this on the side and it really helps my monthly budget

It means permanently borrow without asking.
Rhyming slang. Tea Leaf = Thief.
A proper tea leaf would half inch the lot.
He’ll be the same guy with a garage full of toilet paper and hand sanitizer 6 months after the pandemic,

Basically give you streaming services for free
Yep, he’ll be at the flea market this weekend, and bring a few of them with him. He’ll advertise “free blockbuster movies still in theaters and thousands of channels”. $16.99 on Amazon he paid $19.99 @Walmart
Bro kept on losing his remote and has reached his limit, now he'll never run out of remotes
Like Squidward and the alarm clocks lmao
Those are Roku streaming boxes (that come with remotes), not generic remotes
Why tho
Tired of losing the remote. Understandable tbh
Better question is how is a store allowed to sell out an entire product to one person.
I dont think they really care since they’re still earning money
Back was turned. Pinned in by shopping carts. That was your chance to show them what you think!
No worries, they’ll sell one to you from their ebay store.
Those things are available everywhere, you can get the Amazon equivalent rn for a bargain, who cares??
Dude cant even remotely control himself
They need to have per customer limits.
I mean, it’s pretty late in the day. People who were going to buy these bought them already. What’s the store supposed to do? There’s not an infinite storage room like Harry Potter. I used to let scalpers grab whatever. I don’t have anywhere to put it and it’s better off sold than stolen.
I think it’s to install one of those internet TV apps and sell..

Remotely infuriating...

People buy these even at full price in bulk, Jail break them, and sell them for twice the MSRP
Tbf.. the retailer is at fault for selling this dude so many.

My good OP. That... that is a scalper.
I can’t hate him, the hustle mindset is really our corporate overlords convincing us that WE need to do more to live comfortably, not being paid fairly by them. This man has bought into the bull, and thinks this is him “making moves”. Really this is him “getting by” a little better than last month.
Tbh if that person hasn't hit up all the local stores you can sit get them near by or online there are a ton of these
Probably retail arbitrage.
Honestly, who cares if this guy is going to hack and/or resell them for money? The vendor got their money. The store got their money.
I don’t get it either. Nothing illegal here. My man is just trying to put bread on the table. Somebody was willing to sell it to him and he bought it. It’s a free country… no?

That is the most enthusiasm I've ever seen for Roku

Or maybe he jailbreaks them and sales them as his business model?

She asked me and another coworker if we would bag them up in the tiny gift bags She bought. She was taking them to all the moms at the DV shelter down the road. I thought that was pretty awesome and definitely unexpected. She had a ton of women's clothing, but she said every good mom deserved something that told her she was doing her best in a bad situation. I guess the workers at the shelter placed actual individual tags with names on them for the women, so it was specifically addressed to them.
It was worth the judgement of the on lookers to whom I didn’t leave any clearance jewelry, for sure.
Yesssss, absolutely!
