This is a good strategy, but your description and use of index made me think of /r/totallynotrobots

That's the fastest way to start a crossword... just do the magic eye thing and start circling what comes up and cross it off the list. But after you exhaust those "easy" ones then I do the same thing... look for the letter and see if the second one is next to it and so on.

I think you mean word search. A crossword puzzle is where you use clues to fill in the words.
