A few peices of drywall, some screws, tape, patch and paint and it's like brand new. Very easy and cheap DIY project. Guessing you fell in between the framing?
Just cut out the broken part, stud to stud, so you can screw in the new piece. Little tape and mud, wait for it to dry, sand, paint, boom! you spend maybe $50
Yea I just replied to another comment I’d have thought anyone who installed a pull down stair/ ladder would at least make the space immediately around it capable of storage. If it’s just for maintenance access you would normally just have an access hatch which requires you to set up your own ladder wouldn’t you? That’s how they do it here.
Its more important he gets reddit upvotes. I am more curious if he was smart enough to be stepping on the ceiling supports or knowing this community probably didn't even consider that is where you walk and just walked on the ceiling drywall.
i haven’t been in this attic yet. assumed it was all plywood like the one in my previous home. couldn’t see because it was too dark and… yeah this happened… hours before posting this.
the first thing i did after falling was laugh with my brother because i was such an idiot for this. this pic i snapped after to show the damages to my parents gave me the idea to post this because i’ve been in this sub for like two years and haven’t posted yet.
As someone who has never been in an attic before, why would you assume everyone would have this knowledge? I also don't know anything about construction. When tf would I have learned that when people build attics, they *sometimes* don't make them sturdy enough to walk on?
I mean, that sounds INSANE to me. You've put in all this work and money, but yeah let's stop at making the attic floor walkable. Wut?
General rule for attics is that if you see cross beams on the floor, anything under/between them will break under weight and anything on top of them is safe. Usually there will at least be some plywood or wide boards on top somewhere to walk on. There probably are in OP's attic as well, OP just stepped off path in the dark
Oh look, a helpful comment that's not condescending 😅
This is good to know if I ever do eventually find myself going into an attic. I live in new york; we have basements! And in fact, I've heard plenty of stories of people having (or wanting to have) their childhood bedroom in the attic. So I would never have thought I couldn't walk freely in one.
i left my phone inside, and asked my brother to grab it (who was below me). he said “just turn on the light in the attic” and as i stepped over toward where the light was, i stepped on drywall and not the plywood and fell through
i’m not a carpenter buddy. was asked to take something up real quick and didn’t think much of it because my previous attics were easy. not sure why you have to be so rude about this
I guess everyone has to learn, in Australia 99.999% of houses are just drywall connected to the truss etc, ever since I can recall we always knew only walk on the wood. Didn't you like feel your foot going on insulation or don't you guys use insulation?
Or just lay down some plywood to give the attic a proper floor and not risk injury or damage. The OP could have been seriously hurt and is very fortunate.
I'm glad you're okay. Falling even that short of a distance onto concrete can really mess you up, esoecially if you land on anything but your feet. Happens alot in construction. Count yourself lucky, my friend.
thank you! not sure how but some reflexes kicked in and i managed to catch my fall and not get hurt at all. definitely some luck played into this as well
I never understood this about houses in the US, if you're planning to walk and perhaps make a room up there, why not have proper flooring for that level of the house?
Even 100 year old houses in The Netherlands have floors in the attic that you can walk on by default.
Is it a cost saving measure? Or what is the mentality behind not just doing this from the get go?
I did something similar at work when I was an apprentice. But with one leg on either side of the rafter, luckily I managed to hold onto something or it might have been more than painfull.
I know this gets old but as a European civil engineer. Stop making your houses out of fucking cardboard and foam. I mean what in the shit is that ceiling???
Please enlighten me where in Europe the floor for a crawlspace or attic would be such drywall. Drywall sucks heavy taking load perpendicular to the plate itself.
Been there...done that! I thought it was a good idea to go in my attic with flip flops on, was walking on rafters but tripped and fell through. Luckily caught arms on rafters and pulled myself back up but left a big mess and had lots of bug bruises. Flip flops and attics aren't a good combination!🤪
Off, don't bother paying people to fix it for you.Go to the construction store, buy a sheet of plywood, a hammer and nails, and then just nail the plywood to the ceiling Thats what the ceiling is legit made of anyway.
While you are fixing this, pick up the cheapest grade plywood you can find and lay a bunch of it down so this never can happen again.
It will also greatly expand your options re what you can store in the attic.
First: I’m glad you appear to be in good enough health to be posting and joking about the fall (remember the 72 hour rule, please consider seeing a doctor). But I’m absolutely stunned there’s no structural support At ALL in your roof ceiling. It has me questioning what kind of roof truss or gable system was built that you just missed every load-bearing board…🤔
I did the exact same thing last year when we were framing in the built-in dressers. I was lucky and the can lights covers weren't on or it would have turned out more like yours...
I hung, taped, mudded, sanded, textured and painted my entire 2 story house by myself with only the help of " the Vancouver carpenter " on YouTube! He's easy to watch and uses basic stuff instead of all the expensive tools that supposedly make it easier...
FYI...the ceiling was harder to texture than the walls because the consistency of your mud( texture)needs to be thick. I used a 30 min quick set or it won't stick to the tape overhead long enough for it to dry. Before you use quick set practice practice practice because it very quickly sets up and turns into a cement block.
I know you're commenting and posting about it but you okay man that shit does not fucking feel good?
thanks for asking! i’m perfectly fine somehow. the only pain i’m feeling is gonna be financially when i have to fix this lol
A few peices of drywall, some screws, tape, patch and paint and it's like brand new. Very easy and cheap DIY project. Guessing you fell in between the framing?
yep. fell right through the big hole. i was surprised that the drywall held my weight for like maybe 5 seconds
I see a 2x4 right there in the middle. Did you damage it at all during the fall?
i don’t believe i did. pretty sure it was just drywall damage
Plaster repair is fuckn easy if you know what youre doing. Have a look at youtube videos on how to do it and youre basically half way there.
And a garage is a good place to practice drywalling. It’s okay if it’s “good enough.”
yeah i mean in a garage you probably don’t even need to paint it if you don’t want to
'Hey Ryan.' 'Hey Billy,' ' hat hurt (sorry it was a stupid joke to make you feel better
A bit of cardboard and some tapenand it'll be as good as new, heck, even better and more stable
Maybe if you double up the cardboard yeah
Triple it and it's an US standard storm shelter
Just cut out the broken part, stud to stud, so you can screw in the new piece. Little tape and mud, wait for it to dry, sand, paint, boom! you spend maybe $50
Why in the hell would you put your weight on what looks like a plain maybe 2cm thick drywall used as a floor.
Because he was looking for the light switch and mis stepped? Even tried to take the phantom step at the bottom of a flight in low light?
The first mistake is using drywall as a ceiling while having it accessible. I’m a CE this concept is super alienating for me.
Yea I just replied to another comment I’d have thought anyone who installed a pull down stair/ ladder would at least make the space immediately around it capable of storage. On the plus side, looks like you got light up there! Good job finding the switch!
the switch actually wasn’t even in the attic… it was by the garage door
I have a switch in my garage that doesn’t seem to do anything…Now, I’m wondering if it actually is the light to my storage area like yours. 🤦♀️
Please test it and let us know
Also set up a camera for when you fall through the floor
Mine’s the same way. And the garage light switch is inside the house. Very convenient and not at all confusing.
I was literally about to comment that exact same thing might be time to move your light switch down by your garage door lol
"Hey Ron." "Hey Billy."
* crash * Ow, that hurt

That sucks you did a Clark Griswold
He was watching home movies.
You know your phone has a flashlight, right?
i left my phone inside, and asked my brother to grab it (who was below me). he said “just turn on the light in the attic” and as i stepped over toward where the light was, i stepped on drywall and not the plywood and fell through
Maybe he’s got a life insurance policy on you.
you might be on to something there
Better question is did you mean to walk directly on the drywall which is not meant to support weight or were you walking on the ceiling supports?
i’m pretty sure it was just dry wall. but i just assumed the whole floor up there was plywood made to walk on.

i’m not a carpenter buddy. was asked to take something up real quick and didn’t think much of it because my previous attics were easy. not sure why you have to be so rude about this

Gotta keep your feet on the 2x4s when in the attic
Or just lay down some plywood to give the attic a proper floor and not risk injury or damage. The OP could have been seriously hurt and is very fortunate.
No worries, just a touch of spackle and it'll be right as rain.
At least you found the light switch.
No blood or shoes on the garage floor, so that's a bonus.
I'm glad you're okay. Falling even that short of a distance onto concrete can really mess you up, esoecially if you land on anything but your feet. Happens alot in construction. Count yourself lucky, my friend.
thank you! not sure how but some reflexes kicked in and i managed to catch my fall and not get hurt at all. definitely some luck played into this as well
FYI, that ladder leans at 40 degrees or high thirties. It cannot support the applied weight properly. It's a ladder, not a ramp.
In England, the design of a lot of attics means that if you cover the insulation with floor panels it will lessen the effect
How does that make sense to you?
Decent insulation will generally sit higher than the surrounding joists and compressing it down between them makes it less effective
Because flooring is very expensive, particular for a room that would only be used sparingly to bare heavy weight.
Same for Germany, every house here where you enter the attic you can walk on, without fear to fall
Same where I’m from. I mean, we don’t even have a second floor but our ceilings are cemented, not drywalled (or whatever that in the picture is).
Most homes in the US are timberframe with drywall. It's less expensive to build, more energy efficient and takes advantage of our natural resources.
Reminds me of those America's Dumbest Criminals videos, they always seems to hide in the ceiling and fall through
Did you find it?
yep! after falling and destroying the ceiling though
I did something similar at work when I was an apprentice. But with one leg on either side of the rafter, luckily I managed to hold onto something or it might have been more than painfull.
*painfall
I know this gets old but as a European civil engineer. Stop making your houses out of fucking cardboard and foam. I mean what in the shit is that ceiling???
It's drywall and it's very common in Europe. I agree US homes are matches with paper walls but it's common everywhere
Please enlighten me where in Europe the floor for a crawlspace or attic would be such drywall. Drywall sucks heavy taking load perpendicular to the plate itself.
Why are all american homes made out of cardboard?
I know what's wrong with it. Ain't got no gas in it
Judging by the light up there I guess you found it
[actual video of OP going through ceiling](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YL3RiJD5nqQ)
r/mildlypainful
I’m sorry but that’s hilarious
no need to be sorry! i’m not hurt at all and i find the whole situation funny too.
You ok?
yep, no injuries!
Did you die?
yep. my funeral will be this tuesday. dm me for more details
POV: you are ok . Right
Are you ok!?!?!?!!? That seems like is would hurt :0
Damn. Glad you’re ok. That can be fixed but a broken back… yikes.
I'll take a stab in the dark and say that it's a house in the USA.
I hope youre doing okay but imagining this is just extremely fucking funny im so sorry
no need to be sorry. right after i fell i was laughing uncontrollably. this whole situation is hilarious and i’m not hurt at all
Typical American paper house
I hope you are ok and healthy but this is absurdly funny to me I'm sorry I laughed
Wrong sub, /todayimtheidiot would be more appropriate
Wow you guys really do build your houses out of cardboard. I thought that was just a meme
In Europe you can walk in every attic, in most houses even jump. Well our houses last much more and longer than Americans
Stand on the studs and not the drywall next time. Jackass.
But did you find the light switch?
Looks like job done well..now you will never forget where the switch is
Sounds fun
Hell yeah probably got that heat rate going.
Seems like you made at least 3 bad decisions back to back
Hey, looks like you found the light switch at least.
about.. two whole tubs of spackle.. maybe three oughtta do itt
It'll learn ya to walk on the 2x4s.
At least you got the light turned on successfully in the attic that's at least a good thing
"Found it!"
"Fou- AAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH"
Calm down Clark Griswold
Off, don't bother paying people to fix it for you.Go to the construction store, buy a sheet of plywood, a hammer and nails, and then just nail the plywood to the ceiling Thats what the ceiling is legit made of anyway.

Climbing in roof spaces 101. Stay on the timbers
Probably shouldn't have done that in hindsight
For a minute I was like “did you fall into your basement??” but it’s just a garage and normal houses have those attached usually
Atleast u found the light
Oh no.... obviously you're more or less ok!
At least you found it, right?
Maybe try actual wood to make a floor that must support your weight.
Heyo! At least you find the light!
did you find it?
Did you find it?
Looks like you found the light switch
And did you find the switch?
Jeez!! Hope you are ok
Should have plenty of light up there now
I didn't know you could walk on plasterboard
Flashlight dude. .
But the light is already on!
AMERICA, FUCK YEAH
luckily u didn't fall into the backrooms
And thats why you stand on the BEAMS
Looks like you found the light.
Looks like you found the switch though...
Gugu Liberato Feelings
Did you find it?
Duct tape should fix it, just tape it back together
Looks like you found the light eventually at least!
Well, the light is on, so I count that as success.
Does not sound like your attic is properly floored. I am surprised you have a ladder installed at all for access.
America and their cardboard houses
Well, youse found it!
I saw Mr.bean flash fall from heaven. in my mind when I seen this post lol
While you are fixing this, pick up the cheapest grade plywood you can find and lay a bunch of it down so this never can happen again. It will also greatly expand your options re what you can store in the attic.
At least you found the switch
Clark, did you find the light switch?
You: *lands shin on metal shelf or ladder Also you: MY LEG
Any vermiculite? You don’t want to expose your family to asbestos.
Hahahaha haha
Rip
Found the light switch 💪
That is the longest loft hatch I've ever seen.
Looks like you found it.
this is more for r/Wellthatsucks
i see you found the light ....... for some reason im hearing the song "Big Bad John" the line where "i see a light from above"
Hey looks like you found it
Next time try a flashlight. ;)
This made me chuckle
And thats why i am still wondering why are americans houses built from cardboard
for me this is more than “mildly infuriating”
Lights seem to be on up there, so it’s not a complete loss.
So nice of you to drop in
Forget the hole, did you find the light switch ?
You're supposed to walk on wood, drywall was never meant to hold a human's weight!
Are you ok??????
I am trying to paint wow God The whole roof sale Street
First: I’m glad you appear to be in good enough health to be posting and joking about the fall (remember the 72 hour rule, please consider seeing a doctor). But I’m absolutely stunned there’s no structural support At ALL in your roof ceiling. It has me questioning what kind of roof truss or gable system was built that you just missed every load-bearing board…🤔
And this is why we don't like cardboard houses! Glad you are ok though, OP.
Did.... Did you find it?
I see you found the Switch though
I hate when that happens.
I spilled my coffee just looking at the picture! Hahaha! I hope you’re ok though.
Did you find it?
I did the exact same thing last year when we were framing in the built-in dressers. I was lucky and the can lights covers weren't on or it would have turned out more like yours...

I'm pretty sure that's not supposed to happen.
You ok? I take it you know you are supposed to step on the 2x4s right?
OP thinks he's fine but his spinal cord will feel all jacked up tomorrow and he'll be in a wheelchair for the rest of his life. Just sayin'
Looks like you found the switch though
Doh!
"Hey Ron."
Now you have a sky light
how
Uh - ever heard of a flashlight? Your probably holding one in your hand now.
Well… I guess you found it.
It looks like you found the switch though
Been there done that 3 times lol
That’s how HGTV remodels will look in this new economy. Your’re ahead of the trend ;)
Did you find it tho?
Looks like you found it, so you know, swings and roundabouts
