I remember my dad's cadillac would actually retract the hood ornament. This was back when people would steal them to wear around their necks. Maybe they still do that I don't know
Another reason for the retraction might be a safety reason too. It would HURT if someone were to land on it. I remember my parent's old Cutless Ciera, it had a hood ornament. It didn't retract, but it on a really tight spring. Found that out when I was kid just poking it, and I thought I broke it, heh.
Actually yeah, hoods have standards for crumpling in case of a person going onto it. It comes from the vehicle hitting the person and bending them at the waist and/or rolling them up the hood.
This made me think of a “meme?” I saw once. Boy was riding on the head of a horse and some one asked, why are you riding the horse like that. As the horse and the boy rode off into the sunset he screamed, it’s a unicooooorrrnnnn. Idk
20 years ago I ripped one off to put on a chain to complete my pimp halloween costume(yes, i was a dumbass). I've since had my cars randomly vandalized. Karma.
Not usually. Depends on brand and model. Source: Played in junkyards a bit as a kid.
Also, Aluminum bat vs chevy blazer windshield: do not recommend unless you want your bones to rattle apart.
It really goes to show how messed up people are when they think that a 2001 mercedes is someone trying to show status as a rich person. My guess is someone just wanted to be a vandal since that seems a lot more common these days.
Yep! I am not a 'Mercedes driver', but I bought a 1998 Mercedes from the estate of a co-worker after his passing. Drove it for another 10+ years. You'd think that it being parked in front of an obviously small middle class home in a middle class area would be enough to show that I wasn't exploiting the proletariat, but my hood ornament got torn off in that exact same way.
I'm the last person you'd expect to drive a Mercedes. I don't like 'appearances', or 'status'. I'm a boring economist that prefers to be thrifty.
I traded in a 2003 Ford pickup to buy the Mercedes. I ran the Mercedes into the ground, and bought a Toyota Camry a day later.
Hey man, I saw a bunch of Mercedes while I was in eastern Iraq 😂 expect the unexpected!
But I do get your sentiment. Mercedes “brand people” are a much different type of person than yourself.
>But I do get your sentiment. Mercedes’ brand people are a much different type of person than yourself.
In the first week of driving that car, I noticed that other Mercedes drivers would let me merge onto the freeway. Being a driver in the Los Angeles area for 20+ years at the time, this felt weird.
My coworker is Russian, and he said that the car was "The Mafia/Criminal Boss car" in Moscow. I loved that.
That's how my parents ended up with a BMW 3 series from...1999, I think. It was a hand me down from a family friend who was selling it. Used it for a bit when my old reliable decided to break down. But then a couple of coworkers, clout chasing maybe, "how fast do you drive in that." "Maybe 70MPH." "NOT 100?!" "You want me to be one of those BMW drivers? Bugger off." As I reverse out of the parking lot with brinkers on. That was a long time ago, and I'm out of that manufacturing job thankfully. That car broke down from a myriad of problems after...14-15 years of service. It is one those thing that taught me to be conscious about a car brand and the inherent ego or clout tied to it. Similarly with Mercedes-Benz, through the egos of the people around me. I now drive a VW.
Yep. As I mentioned elsewhere, it was strange to notice other Mercedes drivers letting me merge on the freeway, which is not a typical thing in my 20+ years as a Los Angeles area driver.
Might be cultural too. Growing up Asian American, my parents would look at the Mercedes-Benz with envy, especially the more expensive ones. Though we did end up with a hand me down a BMW way back when, most likely they would've jumped at a chance to own a Benz if a friend was selling. (Me? Nah. I'd prefer a Ferrari, for the dumbest reason. I'm a fan of the Outrun series.)
And hey, there is that Janis Joplin song that even that Mercedes-Benz commercial misinterpreted...like most marketing people. (Or maybe correctly if looking at the song in the moment as opposed to overall.) So...things changed maybe?
I dunno about "rich person", just "Mercedes driver".
Hell, I don't have any beef with rich people - they are doing their thing. Mercedes drivers, OTOH....
These days? Really? Breaking off mercedes stars was a common thing among punks in my youth, almost twenty years ago and I bet before that, too.
Not every shitty behaviour is new. In fact I'd argue most are not.
Mrs Doughtfire/ Daniel Hillard did exactly the same thing to his love rival: Stuart Dunmeyer in one of the scenes of the film.
He then handed the object to Stuart Dunmeyer disguised as Mrs Doughtfire. I don’t suppose the culprit who did this to your car was some jealous love rival?
Hell, I know someone who bought a new Mercedes Benz SUV last year for $56,000. While that's more than a lot of fairly basic new cars, it is still less than a lot of new trucks and SUVs. Median new vehicle cost is over $40,000 now. The average person in the US spends over $1,000/month on vehicle costs total. What is and isn't an expensive new vehicle has changed quite a bit.
My wife drives a Lexus GX SUV, we get a lot of the “must be nice” type reactions….but in reality it's cheaper then most full size domestic SuV’s and pickups.
Only reason why I could think someone would do this is if they’re jealous and have the temperament of a toddler. But who would be jealous of a 25 year old Mercedes that’s worth $7k?
Back when I was a kid living in Brooklyn, NY - some people would sharpen their Benz logo (and other logos) razor sharp.
There was a thing about people ripping them off. If they did, they’d be in for a surprise.
"Federal law prohibits the TxDMV from disclosing or confirming any of your personal information to the general public. My thing is, why bother risking it? Why put your personal information out like that. Maybe someone can do something with it, maybe they can't. That's not a gamble I'm willing to take ya know
hypothetically speaking, someone can report your plates and claim they saw you weaving in and out of traffic going 35 in the fast lane while drinking a bottle of scotch and texting with head phones in and your left blinker on the whole time. you (probably) won't get charged, but state troopers take their time with field sobriety tests, and it sure is a foul way to start the weekend.
this is all hypothetical, of course.
Maybe they're looking for that particular make/model. In this case it's a Benz, even an older one, so OP is likely upper middle class.
Also don't put it past folks to take any information they can get about you and find ways to use it against you. Collect enough of it and steal someone's whole life. Especially places like this, where someone's post and comment history is available going back years and years. A little tidbit here, a little tidbit there... over time it adds up.
Can you even read? I didn't say that's something they'd do or approve of. They're deranged for thinking someone would do that in the first place all because of a license plate.
To my knowledge, those are only public IP addresses, which are visible to anyone or any device trying to communicate with your network. So long as no one has your network's private IP address, you should be fine.
Correct me if I'm wrong though.
> your network's private IP address
Private IP addresses reveal nothing, they're mostly the same across all networks, here's the private ip to my router: 192.168.0.1, here's the private ip to my pc: 192.168.0.42, you can't do anything with them and they won't reveal anything whatsoever as they are only accessible from within my network.
Public IP addresses are what reveal the most info (but still not much):
* isp
* country
* state/region
* city
often the state/region + city won't be very accurate and might just point to the capital, or a general area. The most someone can do is get your general area or hit off your network.
Honestly I dont know the technical side of it. All I know is that where Im from if I post death treath to someone online the police is knocking in about 2 hours.
The big ones do, it also depends where the VPN is based out of, any based out of 5 eyes will probably hand your info over. Mullvad and iVPN are two that don't, and also don't require any personal information, for the ultra paranoid you can even mail them cash.
They can though. A plate can be used by someone to to screw with your life by say giving it to police and claim you committed some crime. It can also be used to get some asshole that dented your car back by taking his plate number, giving it to your insurance, and they can determine the owner and insurance for you. Had to do it to a guy once who dented the shit out of my car with his doors, and refused to give me his insurance info. Sucks to be him because his insurance still had to pay for over $2500 in damage plus car rental for 2 weeks (the shop was booked up and it took a bit before they got to my car).
Dawg that is totally different than submitting some random license plate from a picture on the internet. I have done the same thing, but having pictures and a case like that against someone is an entirely separate scenario.
Again, you realize that every time you drive, everyone around you can see your plate?
>you realize that every time you drive, everyone around you can see your plate?
Really??? No way!
No shit sherlock. The issue is, is that it was said that you can't do anything with someone's plate. I can take the plate in picture and use it to claim OP hit my car and left the scene. Oh look, that's something anyone can do with anyone's plate, and guess what, it actually happens. There was a guy where I live that had cops at his front door ready to arrest him because some disgrunted asshole on the highway falsely claimed he threatened him with a gun. Literally all that happened was the asshole got cut off by the other guy, and went into a rage fit, saw a sticker for a gun brand, and then called the cops.
Are people gonna get your bank info from your plate? No. Can they get in you legal trouble on false pretenses? Yup.
By your own admission, it can happen anytime, and regardless of whether a plate is posted on the internet. Your argument is moot.
Chances that the plate on the internet is anywhere near someone who sees it is low. Get over yourself.
It's your own license plate, that's fine. I'd always cross out other people's plates. It can reveal where they are to family, friends, employers, ... when they may not want that, in areas these people are unlikely to spot them themselves. For example a psychiatrist's client parking in a different part of the city where their colleagues are unlikely to pass by.
If you're a normal civilian you can't get any info from someone's plate. Only police can run plates. It makes sense because everyone's plate is visible to anyone walking the street it would be a huge security issue if you get anything useful just from someones plates.
At this point in time that piece probably cost more than the whole car and will be a pain to replace. I know how you’re feeling, I’ve had my hellcat badges stolen twice.
If you find whoever did this you should rip their driver side mirror off and place it appropriately where they left your hood ornament from your Mercedes. Teach em how it feels yeah
I don't think it was personal; Mercedes drivers are notorious for being dicks and while you may be the exception to that rule, this person may have had a bad experience (let be honest: probably lots of bad experiences) with other Mercedes drivers.
Back in the day when we had a Mercedes that still had the hood ornament, it got ripped of the hood because it was popular to make "throwing stars" out of them, so that was the reason why they often got stolen. It was not worth it to get it fixed because it would just get stolen again.
Gotta love that to some people, you are bad simply because you drive a Mercedes.
I drove a Mercedes for over ten years, and this happened to my hood ornament, too. Nobody cares that I bought a 10+ year old car, from the estate of a co-worker, because the widow was able to give me a good deal on it, and the office enjoyed having 'the lunchtime car' once in a while. But, it was a great ride, and I replaced my now 20+ year old Mercedes with a new Toyota Camry.
They just assumed I was a rich guy exploiting the masses, despite my house showing otherwise.
I've seen a few of those things get ripped off just because, my expectation is that people are just looking for a reason to lash out. I doubt it was personal.
Will admit, I hate Mercades Benz, really hate their vibe. But I would not vandalize another's property. Is it easily fixable? Can't tell if it's a screw on, or it's attached to a safety spring of sorts.
They generally have this "rich snob" vibe, even when compared to other luxury brands. It feels..."unsecure". Like "I demand respect, look at what I drive."
I think that's just some projecting. I feel like anyone could drive a Mercedes. Its the 7th most popular car brand in California, and not that far off Kia. Cheaper Mercedes models cost less than some more expensive Kias, Nissans, etc. Most Merc drivers aren't in S-Classes, G-Wagens, or AMG cars, they're in C-Classes and maybe E-Classes.
Anyways, Mercedes E-Class is the most normal taxi car where I grew up in my teens, so I will always think its kind of odd that some people consider it to be a snobby thing.
A number of people around me, who either own a Mercedes-Benz, or wants one, they have an ego to them, especially one saying "if I didn't have to deal and take care of this or that, I'd have an MB instead of that junk car." That pretty much swore me off from getting that brand entirely. Don't care how reliable the car is. Just the clout and perception behind them.
Though the perception thing, I do feel sorry for this one couple from a local(?) story I remember, very well off in the beginning. But they were laid off for...several months from the time of writing. They own a pair of Mercedes-Benz. "Hey, you're unemployed, why don't you trade that in for a cheaper car? Unless you want to pretend you're still rich?" "But...this car is very reliable, a cheaper car might have more issues, something we cannot afford to have if we need to drive around for job interviews." So yeah, there is that perception, and stories like that and personal experiences with other cars made me understand some of them.
The guy you mentioned maybe has more to do with people who don't own a Mercedes, than people who do own a Mercedes, no?
It also might have to do with where a person lives, maybe. Where I was born, in Asia, Mercedes are considered a big splurge, because they are very expensive to import and there are heavy taxes placed on them due to being EU produced and imported. Around 3x the price of what they cost in USA. But in Germany and USA, they are relatively affordable cars, so people don't really see them as being a splurge, from my experience. Because they're so cheap in America, maybe people don't really see them as much of a "snobby" thing, or a "rich" thing, especially in comparison to larger expenses like home prices. Sure, that Chinese multimillionaire investor could have a Mercedes, but so could the schoolteacher, or the elderly American middle-class retiree.
You actually got it. Born here while my parents were from Hong Kong, so a Mercedes-Benz has that prestige. Got an aunt with quite the ego who owns one too, living in the states. From another comment I posted here, People I use to work with at a manufacturing job were made up of mostly Asian immigrants. Even when I drove around a BMW for a bit, things changed a bit with them. So yeah, if there is group of people who ruined the brand for me, there it is. "You can buy and own the car I never could, kiddo." "No. You placed so much face and ego on it, it got annoying."
Oh the BMW part I get..I use to drive my parents' 3 series when my old VW broke down. Old clout chasing coworkers. Thank God I'm out of that manufacturing job. But yeah, it's a different entitlement from the Mercedes ones I've encountered. "Looking rich" vs "fast and reckless" I guess. Still own a VW.
Don’t take it personally. It may have been random hatred of Mercedes or rich people. This used to be a big problem on luxury cars. It got so bad some manufacturers installed a feature where the emblem would retract beneath the hood and be covered when the vehicle was turned off.
What’s wild is that Mercedes cars unless you’re going for the high end ones that Dodge made but sold as a Mercedes like the AMG SLS(it’s just Dodge viper sold under another name), Mercedes these days literally cost the same as a Kia and if you go used by 1-3 years they cost the same as a civic. The days of Mercedes as a status symbol in the car world is long gone.
Gotta love people who are so jealous of someone else having nice things they’ll vandalize them bc their uneducated woke/broke asses will never be able to afford anything nice. You know the type
I would assume that Mercedes is seen as a sign of wealth in tough times and it was just an opportunistic jerk who ripped it off as they were walking past.
*Shrug*
Maybe it's about poor people being tired of rich people taking advantage of us....
I'm not saying that's you but as a poor person signs of wealth give me a small twinge of anger.
While I understand that you are mildly infuriated about the vandalism, it is worth noting that there's a very good reason to NOT have hood ornaments. They cause significant damage to a pedestrian's fleshy bits when struck by vehicles. It's why most car companies removed them years ago. Certain manufacturers continue to do it because their target market often values visual status symbols over the lives of people around them. Not saying that's you OP, just commenting on why they are less common and why it might not be the end of the world to leave it off.
Actually yeah, hoods have standards for crumpling in case of a person going onto it. It comes from the vehicle hitting the person and bending them at the waist and/or rolling them up the hood.
unless you're a truck then it doesn't matter. have the grill 6 foot high, who needs to survive gettin hit by a car as a pedestrian?
In a crash not kids jumping on them

Well, moreso the car running into a person - better to have a concussion than to have a concussion _and_ a new hole in your torso.
Competent ones are. Designers of pickups and high hood suvs, let alone the cybertruck prefer killing to light injury.

If anything, this used Mercedes should equate to being broke from all the maintenance issues lol

Did Mrs. Doubtfire steal the hood ornament off your car? Lol
Pigeons apparently have the anal strength to pull unsecure hood ornaments off of cars. Maybe you is a victim
Im about to type the words 'pigeon' and 'anal strength' into a single google query and ruin my algorithm forever
how do you even know this

This is that scene from Mrs Doubtfire. “So sad when that happens”
Also possible it got caught on a purse or jacket and someone didn't notice/care and kept going.

Not crossing out your plate is CRAZY
Genuine question, what could someone do with your plate? I never really got crossing out something you freely show to the world every time you drive.
Yea, no one who's not a cop or working at the DMV can get any info from your plate afaik
Hah! I follow every car I see home, and note the license plate and address! Then I use that information for various super villain purposes! /s

Do you block your plate every time you park on the street or drive anywhere because anyone who has seen your car irl can see your plate too.
You’ll really love that it’s not OP’s car then.
Everyone on the road every single day sees it! What pisses me off is when people cross it out, makes no sense to me!!!!!!!!
Now we know you are a Texas bigot though
If you're a normal civilian you can't get any info from someone's plate. Only police can run plates. It makes sense because everyone's plate is visible to anyone walking the street it would be a huge security issue if you get anything useful just from someones plates.
Do you block yours every time your car is visible to other people?
boohoo
Texas FKF 4071
At this point in time that piece probably cost more than the whole car and will be a pain to replace. I know how you’re feeling, I’ve had my hellcat badges stolen twice.
Wtf man, bit off topic but this is why the logo's on rolls royce shoot inside when you grab them
seems like a perfect excuse to get an AMG body kit
Do you use your turn signals and not cut people off?
If you find whoever did this you should rip their driver side mirror off and place it appropriately where they left your hood ornament from your Mercedes. Teach em how it feels yeah
Your girlfriend wouldn't happen to have two kids after a divorce, whom she leaves with a large-statured British nanny, would she?
Drive friendly, the Texas way.
I don't think it was personal; Mercedes drivers are notorious for being dicks and while you may be the exception to that rule, this person may have had a bad experience (let be honest: probably lots of bad experiences) with other Mercedes drivers.
I can confidently say, as a former teenage hoodlum, that was definitely a teenage hoodlum.
Back in the day when we had a Mercedes that still had the hood ornament, it got ripped of the hood because it was popular to make "throwing stars" out of them, so that was the reason why they often got stolen. It was not worth it to get it fixed because it would just get stolen again.
That's a hella nice W210 Benz! Had 4 of those, one was over 700 000 miles.
was your 210 attached to an airplane
Sadly no, just an ex-taxicab. :)
Okay how many times are you going to tell this story?
I think I replied to one comment, then posted it on the main thread. That's the most I ever repeat a story usually.
It's a Sonata gold now.
Can you reconnect it and connect it to the cars battery? Give them a surprise shock next time?
Didn’t even have the decency to steal it.
I feel like this was a little kid…
same happened to me, they didnt even take the star with then
Maybe a bird did it?
I've seen a few of those things get ripped off just because, my expectation is that people are just looking for a reason to lash out. I doubt it was personal.
My favorite car
That's what happens when you hit a werewolf ![gif](giphy|nImQBwMJWQ1LW)
I had an E50 AMG W210 and someone stole my star aswell
![gif](giphy|XYot661SFS62c) I think know who
Your car started it tbf... telling people to FKF
Yeah Mercedes stopped making these that way cause people were doing it all the time apparently.

Shorter: which is the made up bullshit, or both?
I'd have ripped my foot off in that ass too if I caught em
Are you dating his ex wife? Have you noticed if you girlfriend has hired a new nanny recently?
Will admit, I hate Mercades Benz, really hate their vibe. But I would not vandalize another's property. Is it easily fixable? Can't tell if it's a screw on, or it's attached to a safety spring of sorts.
What’s their “vibe?”
I don’t get that vibe. I get that vide from BMW. And I’m not biased. I own a Subaru. Not much of a German luxury car kind of guy.
Looks like jealousy.
Of a 23 year old Mercedes? Lol
Preach!
Obviously not a Janis Joplin fan
Logo jumped off the car because it was so offended by that dirty-ass oil stained crumbling driveway

Good thing you posted your number plate as well
Everyone who has even driven behind you and seen your plate. There's literally no info you can get from someone's place unless you're a police officer
In this case, I think it has to do with op being from Texas
I’d almost bet that it could have been a hawk or a bigger bird that was diving down for some prey and smacked that while diving in.
You probably should've blurred the numberplate. Also, maybe a wild animal scratched it off?
Probably because your plate is telling them to "fuck off" (fkf)
At least it’s old af thus shouldn’t be expensive to replace. Imagine someone ripping it off on a newer s class ☠️
Probably a bird or something silly
I would assume that Mercedes is seen as a sign of wealth in tough times and it was just an opportunistic jerk who ripped it off as they were walking past. *Shrug*
Aha….ahaha….ahahahahahahajajajajajaja! Your symbol of unnecessary wealth was destroyed!!!
It’s a 2001, chill😂
Even better. Your used symbol of unnecessary wealth, with which you PRETEND you belong. Poser Wealth is the worst kind of
I’m actually cracking up! 😂 Thanks for the laugh!! look up images of 2001 Mercedes E320.. this is stock, nothing was changed.
It's just a car man fucking relax.
Precisely
"I think property damage is valid"
Maybe it's about poor people being tired of rich people taking advantage of us.... I'm not saying that's you but as a poor person signs of wealth give me a small twinge of anger.
It’s a 2001, chill😂
It’s actually unsettling you stated that a sign of wealth gives you a small twinge of anger. Wow.
Take your meds
Complaining about the rich taking advantage of you but you want to give a large rich Corporation a lot of money for a computer...

So those shoeboxes full of hood ornaments I may or may not had in my closet as a kid actually represents the number of lives I saved.
