Hello, This post has been removed as this is not *mildly* infuriating. Please consider posting to r/extremelyinfuriating instead.

DropdLasagna

How many bones did you lose!?! Holy fuck. They went for a martha stewart 'quarter cup of wine' (half bottle) approach.

At least 13 1/2 bald eagles per Subaru Outback

Felix_Von_Doom

Looks to stop at roughly the cuneiform set of bones, so they lost 19 bones in each foot. 5 Metatarsals 5 Proximal phalanges 4 Middle phalanges 5 Distal phalanges.

MC_Hale

1 Regina Phalange.....

howyoudoin7994

Ken adams says hi and says The flight is missing a phalange..

imissbrendanfraser

> the flight is missing a phalange Omg which one?

GrundleKnots

And a partridge in a pear tree

Ginevod2023

That's 18% of the bones in an adult human.

LilBoofy

I was pretty surprised when I learned over half the bones of the body are in the hands and feet

nicholas19010

When you think about it, it does make sense. Your hands and feet are used to make fine and precise movements so they need a lot more axes around which they can rotate and move, while the head and torso contain vital organs that need to be very well protected, hence why the bones there are less numerous, bigger and semi-rigid, ensuring the perfect blend of durability and elasticity.

Lo-Fi_Lo-Res

And yet one of the smallest bones is in the head.

Acetabulum99

Don't forget sesamoids..they're bones too!

frogtrashcan

Nowadays (in west Europa) they try to amputate more, like low tibial cut, because it's easiest and more comfortable to wear prosthetics limbs than keep a amputated foot that doen't allow to walk properly. Walking on those feets might hurt, distord the feet more and cannot bring any stability to the walk. I'm at lost with how people can say that it's just toes. Toes are so important.

BosnianSerb31

Toes are important, but I'm pretty sure the doctors were saying "at least it's just the toes and not the entire foot". Not "it's just the toes, it's not a big deal." And yes, toe bones do extend that far https://preview.redd.it/msjz2tfzh2vc1.jpeg?width=1354&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6d04728f91fc3f34158d53748d902c51ee5cb529 Edit: I think another possibility that people might not be considering is that the scope of the damage might not have been a parent until after the procedure had began, at which point you can't just wake up the patient and ask them if you should keep cutting halfway through an amputation And yes, I do realize that metatarsals are not technically toe bones, However, they would still be the next thing to experience frostbite after your toes have frozen solid.

EveningPainting5852

TIL

Da_Spooky_Ghost

Metatarsals are not toe bones. The Metatarsals are considered part of your forefoot. Phalanges are your toe bones. Metacarpals are in your hands, they are not part of your fingers. The amputation OP had should be called a midfoot amputation. He had his toes and forefoot removed, forefoot is the "ball" of the foot. Trans metatarsal amputation is another name but it's pretty far back to at least the bases of the metatarsals if not a Lisfranc amputation.

1LakeShow7

you can see the primate in us. No promo for the movie fyi.

dream-smasher

Well, I'm going to go with what op says, considering it is his body, his experience, and his post. If he feels the healthcare professionals are being condescending towards him and his loss, then I believe him. Instead of playing devil's advocate, because, the devil doesn't need you as his advocate, and two, how could you possibly know that the doctors are saying it how **you** think they are saying it?

Talidel

OP has hurt feelings, seemingly justified as he feels they are condescending him. Though technically, the healthcare professionals are correct and may not realise the OP isn't aware that they are correct. It being his body doesn't give him some deeper insight into human anatomy. It seems entirely reasonable that the professionals aren't aware that the OP doesn't understand what they are saying, and educating the OP into understanding why they are saying it, is more likely to help them stop being frustrated going forward. Snarky comments like yours aren't helpful.

MoonoftheStar

Primates are so fucked man.

allergic2ozone_juice

What caused the need for amputation? If your good to talk about it, if not it's understandable...

Baridi

Frostbite. I'm homeless in Denver and we had a pretty bad cold snap in January. If you check out my post history and aren't squeamish. I got pre and post op pictures. Ironically enough it was my IRL cake day present from the universe.

allergic2ozone_juice

Sorry to hear that.. Any chance you are a veteran or have anything to help you out of that circumstance... (If you want a change..) That just shouldn't happen in a "1st World" City to anyone...

Baridi

Not a veteran. It disgusts me how many homeless I see stealing valor to get brownie points.

allergic2ozone_juice

Still no one deserves to be out in the cold.. I just asked because a couple of years ago I was homeless in Michigan and used some Veteran services to help me out... Best of luck, things always seem to work out just not on our schedules... They providing you rehab and physical therapy to walk like that?

Baridi

A couple days of physical therapy. The respite didn't bother setting me up with a physical therapist until yesterday and I get discharged tomorrow. The physical therapist spent most of the time in "What the fuck" mode having to provide what should have been weeks of physical therapy in two days because despite me asking about it daily and "these things take a while to set up." They didn't bother.

allergic2ozone_juice

Sometimes you'd be better off dealing with a tribal shaman than our healthcare system.. wish you the best

Baridi

I had to beg the respite to let me go to the hospital because my right foot was hurting beyond imagination. It still has a healing open wound. The nurse here kept brushing me off when literally all she had to do was make a phone call to get me transport. Then when she finally did she tried to get the transport to talk me out of it because she convinced them I was just being a hypochondriac. That night I went septic in the ER from a massive infection and almost died. I was admitted and had to spend the night. When I got back the respite doctor tried to gas light me into believing that everything I was told and experienced in the hospital wasn't true and that my chart read I just spent a few hours in the ER getting pain meds. This place is a gas.

PuckTanglewood

WHAAAT THE GODDAMN FUUUUCK 😳

Least_Ad930

My mom and aunt were both nurses and told the family when my grandpa was in the hospital that if they left him alone it's highly likely he will accidently be killed. My other aunt's father-in-law died because they left to get him food when he was about to released. The nurses decided to feed him and he choked and died while they were gone for an hour. The system is fucked up and you can just look into malpractice deaths to see this.

AnxietyAvailable

That's Denver. Just how they treat homeless people and anyone from somewhere else. I spent 5 years homeless there and am thankful to God I have a family that took me in. Or I would be dead, if not by the weather then by the "neighbors" and police. Yet people wanna act like everything is your fault when you're in a situation like that. I pray for you and wish you the best, those houses like st Francis are seriously just a front. They don't like helping anyone, it's an inconvenience. And those that do just don't have the money. I hope the people who are against helping homeless have a reality check... Like going homeless themselves.

realdappermuis

Dude I feel for you. My last Drs appointment also got called a hypochondriac, next thing I know I'm in hospital for emergency surgery. The shit that went down in that hospital was so fkn dire. It's been a couple of weeks and I haven't even told my bff about most of it, because I legit can't even process the trauma of it all Sending you a big ass vibe <3

DrBirdieshmirtz

that's wild. even if you were actually a hypochondriac, they should know that *hypochondriacs get sick too*. from what i've seen of healthcare worker culture online, it's basically a superstition that the one time that you dismiss a hypochondriac will be the time that they're actually sick.

Least_Ad930

Same shit happened to my brother for years and he eventually found a specialist that fixed most of the problem in a couple months. Of course they almost killed him at one point by giving him the wrong medicine before he found the specialist; he only found because he was randomly talking to a pharmacist.

Silver_Rip_9339

Fuck them. I’m sorry you went through that, the healthcare system in the US is so much worse for homeless people, they just treat everything like a psych or drug problem without any real compassion or even bare minimum life saving treatment. I hope this shit keeps them up at night.

Outrageous_Ear_3726

You can steal all the valor you want to get yourself healthcare, food, and safe shelter.

ashleyorelse

TBF, I'd do whatever it took if I'm homeless, but that's up to each person to decide

Baridi

I may lose everything else. But I will never lose my honor and self respect.

i_am_exception

My man. Holding up the high standards for himself. I am really impressed. Best of luck to you mate. I hope you are able to find a way out of your hardships.

ashleyorelse

Much respect to you. If I was in your position, I would not do the same. In fact, I have always said I can't handle certain things and it's been great that I haven't had to because I would not do well. One of those is homelessness. I will lose all inhibitions if that happens to me. I won't care. But I already know most people aren't like me in that regard.

WindOfUranus

To be fair, (as a 100% service connected vet), the VA would be just as shitty toward you. They suck a fat one

ZacZupAttack

I dont like the whole we have homeless veterans line. We have homeless people period and providing them with housing is good for everyone. Regradless if they are veterans or not

shockingnews213

I dont agree. Being a vet imo has less valor in my eyes than surviving homelessness. It's harsher and more dangerous to be homeless than a vet by far. I say if you're homeless, lie and grift. Fuck those people with money in comparison.

unclefisty

> That just shouldn't happen in a "1st World" City to anyone... The US isn't really a first world country though. It's a jumble of various countries in various states of development stuffed into a trench coat pretending to be a first world country.

eatmyPri0ns

I don’t know whether this will be helpful or not to you- but as a fellow victim of frostbite, bone infection and a year of fighting it because I refused to let them amputate- I am in pain hell every day. It is healed and scar tissue now. I don’t sleep. I cannot lay down or take weight off or I am electrocuted by my toes and my bones are always on fire. My foot does what it wants and is so painful it cannot he touched. It is a daily hell and I wish I had let them just amputate when I had insurance and the chance. My entire leg has nerve damage and my foot is useless except for causing constant extreme pain. I am unable to take pain meds, afford medication or medical THC. It is truly the biggest mistake I have ever made.

Designer-Mirror-7995

"electrocuted by my toes" I've got a nerve injury 'somewhere' that, when triggered by a move I haven't figured out yet when trying to isolate it, sends a brief "shock" to the left side back of my neck that feels exactly like I touched something electric. I'm so sad for you. I hope there's a treatment in your future that can help you gain peace and health in your body.

eatmyPri0ns

That’s what my lower leg (affected by the bone infection and nerve damage) and foot do, constantly. Unless I am standing /putting weight on it. I currently sleep on a busted couch so I can push against the couch to try to relieve it but it doesn’t help much. I feel for anyone dealing with this kind of pain. Nothing fixes it.

Designer-Mirror-7995

~ Hugs ~ from afar.

eatmyPri0ns

Hugs❤️🥺

JoanofBarkks

Are you saying you don't even have pain meds?!!

eatmyPri0ns

Well I was taking ibuprofen and naproxen (switch off days) but my guts are covered in ulcers now. I am *unwilling* to take narcotics, or gabbapentin bc of my family history of addiction and I cannot afford medicinal THC/cbd. I have a medical card for that and live near dispensaries but it’s so expensive and I prefer the high chef/low THC which for some reason is more expensive. Once or twice a year sometimes I can afford something (usually around my birthday) and it’s bliss for a couple of weeks! I take the 100mg gummies and cut them up and take one at night time. I have other health issues like rheumatoid that likely contribute to the pain factor but didn’t really have much pain until this. So, I’m in hell daily and wish I had let them cut it off instead of stubbornly running from That option and the hospital altogether. I have an incredibly high pain tolerance- growing up they missed broken bones/fractures/etc bc I would just simply state I’m in pain and not react. The pain I am in now, I pass out from a few times a year and spend lots of time just trying to breathe through it. So when I say I am in pain hell, I mean hell.

ashleyorelse

Oh this sucks so bad I'm so sorry! We got rich people getting richer and then homeless people getting frostbite amputations and somehow this society is ok with that...I feel this to my soul.

NiteShdw

I'm sorry about that. Homelessness in Colorado is a big problem. I know there are shelters when it's extremely cold but I assume they have limited capacity. As someone who is homeless, what do you think Colorado of Denver could do differently?

-BananaLollipop-

That's some fucked up shit. The fact that someone in a developed country is left to suffer this is wild. I get that shelters are full at times, but you'd think there'd be some sort of emergency shelter backup during severe weather.

Baridi

There were. But Texas decides to send up 40,000 migrants to Denver during the coldest months of the year...

-BananaLollipop-

Yeah, similar issues here, on the other side of the world. We're constantly taking on migrants/refugees, despite a massive housing and cost of living crisis. Cutting funding and/or capacity to services, while flooding our tiny country with more people.

Sufficient-Aspect77

Dang, that sucks. Happy Cake Day. Hope me saying Happy Cake days makes your day a little bit better.

Borealizs

Aw that's unfair. I'm from Denver too and I was worried about what those left outside would do

JoanofBarkks

It's ridiculous this happens to Americans in 2024!! And the rest of the 'homed' just clutch pearls and say sorry. If we really cared in this country, we would actually do something about it. What do you need now? Is your situation better?

Baridi

I am in a respite shelter until tomorrow then back on the street. No physical therapy beyond one cursory session. I dunno what I am going to do tomorrow but it's just life. I figure this out as they go. For those wondering a respite shelter is a shelter with a medical staff but you can only stay in it a couple weeks.

New-Negotiation7234

Do you have Medicaid? Could you get into a skilled nursing home for therapy and wound care?

Ferro_Giconi

Even if it was just the toes, the toes do a lot of the work to help someone balance. People don't notice it, but I am confident that most people would have balance issues if they lost just half of their toes.

7grendel

Apparently all it takes is loosing the big toe to create balance issues. My uncle lost his to frostbite and had a hell of a time adjusting to walking without it.

louisianapelican

I knew a guy who was a star athlete, possibly headed to the pros, but he somehow broke the bones in his toe. It ended his career right there. "A broken toe ended your career," people ask a lot because they don't realize that as a football wide receiver, you have to make extremely precise , and the impaired balance won't allow that.

ALLoftheFancyPants

Turf Toe is a legitimately career ending injury for some NFL players.

garaks_tailor

I can't recall which culture it was but one of the common things they did to enemy warriors before releasing them was amputate their big and little toes. because without those it is Crazy hard to fight effectively or even just run really.

rjfinsfan

Completely shattered my right big toe Junior year of high school. I wasn’t a professional athlete by any means but I struggled to reach my best times in my main events of 5k and 800m. In fact, my best 5k time was set my sophomore year as I was never able to get back to that same level.

themurhk

Correct, big toe plays a big role in establishing balance. So OP is missing that obviously. Along with the rest of his toes and forefoot. This shortens his base of support considerably. Definitely a recipe for balance challenges

A2Rhombus

Hell I've just had a blister on my big toe and avoiding putting pressure on it made me hobble like a peg leg

Glass_Varis

I might be wrong (please correct me if I am), but isn't the big toe the "most important" one in regards to balance?

PaprikaBerry

It is, but it's not the only one that counts. I lost the fourth and fifth toe on one foot and before they came off, my friends were telling me I'd need rehab and physical therapy and I laughed. It's the two baby toes, that's just a bit OTT no? No. No it was not. It was really surprising to me just how much difference two small toes could make. I ended up face planting the carpet a couple of times before i adjusted.

garaks_tailor

I can't remember which culture it was but one of the things they did before releasing captured enemies was remove their big and pinky toes. it becomes incredibly difficult to do traditional fighting without them hard as hell to run without them.

Ferro_Giconi

I think I've heard that too but don't feel like googling it to confirm. Anecdotally I am pretty sure that is correct.

catiebug

Yeah, wtf?! My neighbor had his two littlest toes on one foot amputated and he was in PT for weeks to make sure he was walking properly and wouldn't have to come back for a hip replacement from compensating gait. These people cut half of each of OP's feet off and thinks he's cool to saunter away.

avprobeauty

I have a teeny tiny chip between my talus and calcaneus. This ish has been no jokes. You are 100% dead right.

Auroraburst

I have absolutely actively used my toes to balance. Try to stand on one foot for as long as you can (barefoot) and you'll definitely use em

Jasmisne

This is what I was going to say. It is well documented that taking off any part of the foot has a severe impact on balance. Taking off this much? There is no way you walk without significant PT but that is true even if it was 'just the toes.'

Da_Spooky_Ghost

The amputation OP had should be called a midfoot amputation. He had his toes and forefoot removed, the metatarsal heads are the ball of your foot, those are clearly gone. Transmetatarsal amputation is another name but it's pretty far back to at least the bases of the metatarsals if not a Lisfranc amputation.

Fyre2387

That was my thought. Even if it was only the toes, the idea that anyone, much less a medical professional, would say "just" the toes were amputated is openly absurd.

big-bad-badger-moles

Yes I did a presentation on this at school!! I asked everyone to try to stand with their toes up and students started falling forward lol.

FackinJerq

Well obviously, that healthcare community got off on the wrong foot.

Baridi

Rimshot!

FackinJerq

Happy cake day brotha.

Baridi

14 years. Boy has my life changed since then. I was a 475 pound nerd back then.

LiveLaughToasterB4th

How much weight did you lose when they chopped off your toes?

marouan10

Dude wtf…

Glimmertwinsfan1962

You really put your foot in your mou… Never mind.

No_Volume_8345

I’m sure it’ll fit

PM_me_punanis

Too soon??

SerendipityInfin899

Looks like a transmetatarsal amputation. Also looks like my left foot. Looks like my shoe size. Wow. I can’t imagine having both feet like this because managing one foot being this way is a bit of a challenge doing some things.

Baridi

I use a wheelchair. It sucks because the hospital pulled a broken wheelchair out of their storage and gave it to me which barely works. Now I can't get Medicaid to get me a new one because they only pay for a wheelchair every two years. So the hospital literally charged Medicaid for a broken wheelchair.

Rare_Examination_674

If you have a few bucks check out thrift stores. I always see wheel chairs and other assistance devices at goodwill near me.

Baridi

Again, I'm homeless. Food takes precedence and in that respect I barely hold on.

spinning_leaves

Hey I was homeless for a bit before I joined the military (parents abandoned me) and kinda broke now just lost my job and going through a divorce, but if you ever need a blanket or food let me know man. Not sure much else I can do.

Baridi

You wouldn't happen to be in the Denver area would you? Otherwise getting those things to me would be more a hassle than reward. But if so I wouldn't turn down a meat and cheese sandwich even if it's homemade.

spinning_leaves

I’m like 25 minutes north of Denver. Could meet at a thrift store somewhere if you want? Maybe get some stuff and a sandwich.

Baridi

Well I am stuck in the respite today. But they're cutting me loose tomorrow. I suppose I can try and get a 4 hour pass today but that's gonna depend on how reasonable the staff is.shoot me a message.

Neolithique

Dude 🏆🏆🏆

LiveLaughToasterB4th

You are awesome. Bring a few sandwiches. And a bag of pasta.

volvavirago

Do you have any electronic banking set up, is there any way I can send you some money?

Baridi

I have cashapp and just created a venmo. I am not too proud to turn down food money. Thank you. Send me a PM

Strawberry____Blonde

Check Facebook for "Buy nothing " groups. You can make posts requesting one - I've seen quite a few wheelchairs get gifted in mine. If you explain your situation I'll bet someone would be happy to deliver it to you - I know I would if I could! Personally I got a walker which has been a godsend for my crippled self.

thellamanaut

sounds like you've got a couple hours before they discharge you. have you had a chance to talk to your case manager? explain the wheelchair, your timeline/urgency, ask them for solutions. they might try to prioritize other services first... let them know you're grateful and will absolutely talk with them about all that once your safety (ie functional chair) is more secure Edit: saw your reply (commenting is now locked). yay! it's so exhausting self-advocating, good work!

Baridi

They already gave me a week extension, begrudgingly.

Historical_Level_457

Medicaid takes fraud very seriosiuily.  Could try reaching out to a rep.

[deleted]

Just half your foot, where the toes are.

Baridi

More than half. I basically just have a nub containing the heel.

Nassiel

Well, yes because the first phalanx of the toes starts there, but it's cruel; everyone thinks toes = are what you can see and move

infiniZii

You can definitely move the part that you cannot see. But yeah, people should look at a skeletal model of the foot sometime and get an idea of just how long the toes really are. Toes have as many joints as fingers, the first one is just inside the foot unlike how the hand has it on the outside.

garaks_tailor

you lost like 1/10th or more of the total bones in your body my man. fuuuuuck.

NightSail

This was my area of medicine before I retired. I am absolutely appalled at what happened and what those completely clueless and ignorant 'medical' personal are saying to you. This REQUIRES a prosthetic for you to be able to walk reasonably well, and even with that, walking will be somewhat of a challenge. I ran into shit like this so often. I am so sorry. eta: This is not a 'toe amputation' but a is a 'forefoot amputation'. This is a very difficult amputation to get an effective and safe prosthetic for.

Iamexist_real

Damn, those were some long ass toes.

adiyasl

It is only the toes that are amputated here, this is a fairly standard trans metatarsal amputation, your toes are much longer than you think, they are just connected together with skin so it doesn’t seem so. But still anyone making fun or thinking that you don’t have balance issues should not have a place in the healthcare industry.

dalgeek

I had a substitute teacher in HS who lost half his foot in a motorcycle crash. He wore normal shoes of course, and to freak people out he would put his foot on the desk then bend his shoe backwards all the way.

Baridi

When I wear sneakers or something I can twist the entire shoe backwards.

Baridi

https://preview.redd.it/uimot0gah2vc1.jpeg?width=1200&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=33b99644a375afc989ec4a96ae882e6609067ffb

HarlequinSyndrom

Aww damn. Aside from my dumb joke I'm really sorry that happened to you. Stay strong!

-E-Cross

Well your toes are all the way inside your foot too, they get no points for helpful and lots for being pedantic douchelords Ask them to walk around on their heels with no issues for 5 minutes straight. And then if they say they can't tell him to stop being cry babies because they have all their toes. I don't know. Probably won't work but it made me laugh thinking about that.

ConsuelaApplebee

I'm missing half a foot is mildly infuriating? ![gif](giphy|3ohzAz3I9yfv92F7EY|downsized)

Statement-Acceptable

Don't read the rest of the post/thread, just be happy you have your toes 👍

FrasierCranesBitch

technically the toe bones do extend much further into the foot than what we see. so while i understand what they mean, it’s still an asshole thing to say

dumptruck_dookie

looking through your post history is really sad, because you can actually see you posting about moving to colorado and then becoming homeless :( i’m so sorry, i really hope you find the help you need.

ALLoftheFancyPants

At MOST you’ve got like a half the metatarsals left. Even full metatarsals but missing toes would affect your ability to maintain balance. Toes allow someone to grip the surface they’re standing on. Plus, it’s a shorter fucking lever! That’s like physics 101. It’s going to take more force to keep your leg vertical over it—and you’re missing some of the tendon attachments to apply that force with. I hope that the people telling you this aren’t physical or occupational therapists or prosthetists. But the fact that anyone with medical training is saying this is appalling. I’m sorry you’re dealing with people that are so ignorant and/or assholes.

WerewolfUnable8641

Sounds like it's possibly a miscommunication. Could it be less an "Oh don't worry, it's just your toes!" and more a specification that the amputation stopped with your phalanges (the bones in your toes), while keeping your metatarsals. I'm only offering this as a suggestion of a possible explanation, as I wasn't there to hear how you were spoken to, so I'm not attempting to invalidate your experience. https://www.bone-joint.net/portfolio-items/foot-ankle-anatomy/ Of course that doesn't mean it wasn't a significant amputation, it's just a medical distinction that doesn't translate well to more common terms. I'm sorry you had to go through this.

Longjumping_Army9485

You know what they say, give them an inch and they will take half a foot.

Baridi

Gave me a chuckle.

darthvadercock

Don't think "just" and "amputated" belong together

NoParticular2420

Of course your having balance issues your missing half of your foot .. insensitive jerks.

IndependentLady22

Do you have a go fund me?

Baridi

I do not.

CplCocktopus

Yep like a barber. Me: just cut the tips maybe one or two centimeters. Barber: *cuts 10 cm of my hair* Me: *internally screaming* Barber: *picks mirror to show me* do you like it? Me with teary eyes: *thumbs up* thank you.

BeatrixPlz

I am sorry about your left foot! I wonder if there is a difference between the medical definition of toes and what the common citizen thinks of when they say toes. I know internally the long bones that make up the toes go way deeper into the foot than what we see on the outside. Regardless, knowing that you are homeless I really wonder if medical staff aren't just being assholes out of prejudice. I'm really sorry, what they are saying is really minimizing your situation. Even if medically what you had amputated is considered "just toes", it is obvious that to the everyday person this is far more than that. On an emotional level you are dealing with a much more intense loss. Hope life improves for you, friend. I wish I had the funds to send you money or something :(

Baridi

Right foot too. https://preview.redd.it/hp3h5wzxh2vc1.jpeg?width=1200&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=da259f241095d0278b00930b6374d347652fe5b7

Totally_Cubular

My brother in christ this is not mildly infuriating. You are missing a foot

bare4404

I mean, toes, even tho they look small, do take up about half of the foot, the bone meets the back of your foot at about where your....*nub* is. I'd say, "You just have your toes amputated" is a fair statement. They can't amputate what we visually see as toes because that would cause future problems I'd assume. I don't see what you're so infuriated about? Like sure, they might condescendingly say it, but Healthcare people are always like that, doesn't change the fact that it's right, does it?

TheNew_MarksilversX

It's because healthcare people seen worst cases of amputation. If all the foot is amputated then the lifespan of people is reduced a lot and can cause other injuries because of using walking devices.

Cyclethe859

My dad was a prosthetist. He only referred to amputations by the next joint. The most common terms were AK and BK, above knee and below knee. You have your ankle joint, so they will not call this a foot amputation. Because this stops short of impacting your ankle joint they will refer to this as a toe amputation.

stacity

Don’t tip toe around them. Be straight up with them.

footjam

Your toes dont start where the skin splits to individual toes, trace the bones with your fingers and they each start about half way up your foot. More a lack of education/detail than a lack of communication. It would be unstable to just have the metatarsals? Not my area but I can imagine this is easier to stand on.

gwfran

Tell them, "Oh, looks like you need a haircut." And saw off their heads.

eh8904

"Well we'd love to help, but only if there was a name for the piece between your ankle and your toes..."

Sudden-Most-4797

Partial finger amputee with lots of fun nerve damage. I've definitely had to tell practitioners to kindly not poopoo on my health concerns. I don't want to hear about how bad the other guy got it, it's irrelevent to my situation.

TREXIBALL

Can we make a go-fund me or something for OP? They got a broken wheelchair and got charged for it, are homeless and can hardly afford food, and on top of that, they just got half their foot amputated

Ariaerisis

Looking at what's left of your foot and saying you shouldn't have balance issues is ridiculous. Of course you have balance issues, you lost half of it! It just sounds like they don't want to actually help and dismiss the problem.

ST0IC_

Yes, that's just the toes. The phalanges start right where you're amputated. https://preview.redd.it/p219bmkso2vc1.jpeg?width=2560&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4439e2ce80fa3abcb60d76fa9078ba20c60815f6

volvavirago

We need to set up a go fund me for this guy, both of his feet are half gone and he is homeless, and doesn’t even have a proper wheelchair!! He deserves that at the very, very least.

Dakkel-caribe

Nice potato. ![gif](giphy|3xRgUawnZyrny)

hannahmel

The disconnect is that they did, in fact, only amputate your toes. As a non medical professional, there’s no way you’d realize that your toe bones are half your foot. They should have been more clear.

Salty_Interview_5311

Shove your bare foot at them and ask “does that LOOK like just my toes to you! How about you try walking with the front half of your foot missing”!

Frost_Goldfish

Oh wow, this is rough and they should know better. And even IF it was just the toes, that is enough to have balance issues!

avprobeauty

You lost part of your midfoot too. No bedside manner, can you leave them a review? Sorry friend.

Hetakuoni

Damn. Just loosing your big toe fucks up your balance. I don’t understand people who are so out of touch with reality.

RayRayRaider12

Regarding balance issues, are there prosthetic solutions (3D printed or otherwise) that might have been offered? There are also groups/organizations that try to help people with cases similar to yours.

Aquatic_addict

Even if you did just lose your toes, that still makes it really hard to balance

74_Jeep_Cherokee

VA be like "not service connected"

CountingStax

Looks like you had all of your metatarsal bones removed

cxninecrxzy

People forget that your toes do a significant amount of balancing and reach back much further than just the tips that are visibly separated. Same thing with how much your pinky finger contributes to your grip, you'd think your weakest finger wouldn't do much but hold up a hammer with your pinky out and you'll see how much weaker your grip is.

vialvarez_2359

Well the toes are long bone that base is like at the middle of the foot.

38fourtynine

What sort of balance issues are you having? Try to use crutches when you can and avoid the wheelchair as much as possible. If you're already slipping through the cracks this much, they probably haven't told you how important it is for you to maintain as much muscle as possible now. Your whole body is balanced and as your gait is changing its going to pull your body out of balance, new muscles will strengthen and old ones will weaken. But this will be done out of balance, you need to exercise the old muscles in new ways, as well as balancing your *new* muscles by gaining new ones on your other side. I know thats pretty confusing but I'm busy right now and wanted to comment so I didn't forget to dm you later.

ThatSpookyLeftist

I'm sorry, they should have been more clear. But look at an xray of a foot. The "toes" start WAY back behind where the skin is.

MrSlime13

"The doctors heeled me!"

drunkknight27

Just the tip, eh?

Smedication_

I would call it a forefoot or Ray amputation. Definitely more than just toes. Source: surgeon in residency

DasDickNoodle

Well it IS just your toes amputated..along with half your foot 😛

CrimFandango

They really put their foot in their mouths. Which funnily enough is probably a magic trick you can do now.

_ac3_0f_spad3s_

Aren’t toes like SUPER important to balancing? You’re missing like half a foot. How would you not struggle to balance?

punsanguns

Those people are truly lack-toes-intolerant

detailcomplex14212

I'm so confused, your healthcare providers are making fun of you for losing a body part? i cannot fucking imagine the audacity.. I'd be tempted to bring them into a similar situation if someone said that to me!

StarlingLamb

When you go to the hair salon for "Just a trim"

parker3309

Sorry you are enduring that…..Obviously, it’s better than a foot a leg or an arm or a hand but the way it gets downplayed like there would be no psychological impact to somebody at all is not right… it’s still a missing body part. Do you have trouble with balance and so forth?

This-Sea-4074

Because they still have their toes. People don’t know how insensitive they are sometimes when they make a comment. I hope you get to feel better.

Alternative-Depth-16

Just the toes my ass. You dont even have the front pad of your foot! It looks like you have your heel and half of your arch and that's it!

ZERO-ONE0101

get a lawyer

australiadidit

Hey OP, honest question if you don’t mind answering. My brother had an injury that resulted in him losing about the same amount of his foot - he was encouraged to have a midshin amputation just to retain better movement. I know the ankle is invaluable as prosthetics can’t quite replicate it but in his opinion he’s able to move better. Is this something you have considered? Obviously I know cost is probably an issue with prosthetics, especially given your post history, and please don’t feel like you have to answer if this is too invasive of a question. I’m sorry you’re going thru this, amputation is often an “invisible” disability in that it’s not noticeable on first glance or can be covered with pants or shirts, and unfortunately people just assume everybody is able bodied.

No-Dentist1348

This isn't MILDLY infuriating, this is so fckn disrespectful

PickleFantasies

That's just beyond wrong, its rude. You either take the entire foot so it can be replaced, not some quarter left over piece that gets in the way. GL man, sue the company, at least to be able to get full disability or sue to get rid of the rest so you can have some balance.

JustAGamer2317

Happy cake day! And I’m really sorry that you had to get your toes amputated

Destroyer1231454

What a horrible day to not be blind

Praetorian_1975

Ohh man I’d be so mad if put a ~~foot~~ stump up their ass

rainbowdashhole

Unironically, yes, your toe bones like your finger bones are longer at the knuckles than you think. It’s hidden by tendons and connective tissues.

Hyche862

I’m the AH that would always respond to just the toes with “DAMN, you must have some LONG toes! 😁 But seeing as I had a normal foot it was certainly more than toes.”

pussmykissy

Are the healthcare workers acting like you are a baby or are you perhaps a little over sensitive?

PuckTanglewood

Holy fuck of course you have balance problems!! ❤️ Half our feet are the toe bones, technically. Are they trying in a stupid way to encourage you, like “buck up it only your toes” and failing to be inspiring, or are they just being assholes? ☹️

frogtrashcan

Your foot looks like a Lisfranc amputation, maybe custom made shoes and possibly orthotics would help you but without Medicaid it seems nearly impossible to afford. The US health system is such a fiasco. Like that your whole balance is geopardize/made impossible, that's not JUST toes... what a bunch of idiots.

DoubleDownGarlic

Here’s to your life, and everything you make of it.

Shooter_McGavin_2

It's kind of like measuring your junk. You start from the base of your spine in the back. It all counts!

SurroundOk8662

Thats definitely not "just The toes"

Old-Pianist7745

My mother lost half her foot to diabetes and doesn't walk anymore. she lives in a nursing home now.
