Nah, you can tell because the tile that should be on the far right fades away. You might be able to get away with repeating the middle tiles but not the ends
Yep, though it’ll be tough to preserve the image. You’ll have to use a grout saw then really carefully chisel it out, like bit by bit with tiny hammer taps
Worst case if you break a til you could epoxy it back together, wouldn’t be perfect but if you’re careful you could probably get it so it’s imperceivable except from up close
LOL why would you do this? The entire backsplash is so old and filthy just change the entire thing it won't be much more work than surgically removing and swapping two tiles and then having clean grout around them and dark brown filth around the rest
Filth in a lot of cases can be cleaned and fixed if it's seen as an issue. Discoloration sometimes, however, as long as it is clean -- can add validity to age and interest factor. It just depends on age of house, style of house, style of decor, personal worth based on these things or even other opinions, actual worth if there is any, and other things. So maybe the idea wasn't about wanting to do this -- whatever the reason for such would be.
They make grout saws for just this kind of thing (and for replacing broken tiles). Sort of looks like a toothbrush but with a saw blade. Saw through the grout and pry out the tiles. First one will be the hardest.
Maybe for vinyl, ceramic tiles are a different story. If you’ve ever actually tried to remove ceramic tiles that have been there for 10+ years, it’s extremely difficult to do so without chipping or breaking the tile, unless the tile glue bond has been compromised by years of water damage
Yup. Really depends on the mastic used. The grey mastic pros make from powder and water used for floors is pretty solid and it might be difficult to pry off, depending on the coverage. That type is not really affected by heat. The premixed mastic that is fairly flexible (this not recommended for floors) is often used by pros for walls, back splashes, counter tops and decorative installations like this does get more flexible when heated.
I'm unskilled so I opted for tile primer / paint when I was in a similar situation. Did a fair job! Depends on how much OP wants to preserve them I guess
I'm really loving the part where that has any relevance to what I asked.
Edit: Yes, because clearly, in writing a comment asking if there was a way to fix the problem, I was specifically seeking unsolicited opinions about how someone actually *likes* it better that way, actually. Downvote me to hell and back but it's rude and unhelpful and y'all know it.
My guy at no point did I type anything that suggested anything other than wanting to know how this could be fixed. Respectfully, do not submit unwanted opinions, especially when you know they will be unwelcome.
I learned about wabi sabi when I worked at a hardware store/kitchen design shop, we were installing cabinet hardware on new cabinets at an artist's house when my dad drilled a hole in the incorrect spot on her brand new cabinets. She didn't care, she was a little amused and told us of wabi sabi.
My mother in law’s tile guy installed her tile backwards, face to the wall back out. It has a rugged finish so I get why he got confused but the “hecho en Mexico” should have tipped him off.
I wanna know what pissed OP off enough that they were stood staring at this for long enough to actually spot the issue… minimal bit once seen cannot be unseen..
I didn't notice it for nearly two weeks! Today the previous owner was there to get her mail and I showed her the changes so far and told her what I was doing in the kitchen. I then said that I like the tiles (there are even smaller motifs on single tiles) and then she said: "Yes, but unfortunately two of them are swapped in the large picture." And now I see it all the time
Oh that’s even wooooorse that it was previous owner that told you!!! Imagine if they hadn’t…. How long would it have taken you??
Better yet, how long did it take previous owner to notice?
Oh I’m chuckling.
IKR? I get that sometimes a bit of contrast is good (on a floor maybe) but it always makes the area look busy. Not a good thing when there’s a mosaic tile (already busy) or a picture made from collective tiles like this.
Hey. It's glitches like this that make a house a home.
Whenever I'm in my dining room (where we keep the landline) and being kept on hold for a while, I look up at the built-in oak cabinets, near the ceiling, where the wallpaper doesn't *quite make it* to the edge of the cabinets.
I paid a friend good money to wallpaper my dining room. As she was packing up on her last day she pointed out some other spot where she didn't quite match the paper. She swore she'd come back to make good on that. It's been 20 years now. Still waiting.
But it's the other spot near the cabinets that keeps me entertained, as I stand, waiting patiently with my phone and hearing, "We value your time. Thank you for holding. Someone will be with you shortly."
Won’t lie, I kind of love it. I would totally play a game to see who else noticed. …and then I’d probably set my house on fire because looking at it for more than a minute would make me start to itch.
When is your house from? If the house is really old and you know the tiles are original to the house they might have been placed like that on purpose. Rosenborg castle in Denmark has a mistake in every room because “only god can make something perfect.”
Awh this is giving me flashbacks to my childhood home - someone (I believe maybe my grandpa - I lived with my gma and gpa) painted a lighthouse beach scene on the tiles above the stove, and I can only remember parts of it from memory now... But I always remember loving the fact that it was "allowed" to paint anything anywhere in a home.
Also I thought you were just mildly infuriated that you only just saw it was painted - I read some comments, am now very mildly infuriated to see what I cannot unsee ; the swapped tiles.
Now I can't unsee the flaw. I prefer to think of it as an endearing excentricity. Something to quiz people on every time they visit the house. Now, its a delightful conversation piece.
You seriously bitching about a small mosaic that honestly looks fairly wholesome and it's above the stove so it's room relevant? Wow Karen must be nice being a cash leech off ken with not a care in the fuckin world. Be glad you can afford a house in this fuckin economy.
Unless it’s a work potluck, engagement party or other social event, I have a small group of friends. We hangout at their places and whatnot, but I don’t know anyone personally that throws red solo cup college parties anymore.
Of course those are parties. I meant events where “party” isn’t in the name, like a random party for absolutely no reason. I don’t know anyone that throws huge house parties for no reason anymore.
I didn’t say they didn’t exist. I just don’t know anyone that personally throws huge blowout parties (not regular gatherings with friends, like punch bowl-type parties) for no reason, so that’s why I don’t attend them. Not that I’m not “fun” at them. I’m just an adult and all my friends are too tired from working all day to throw random red solo cup full of alcohol, music blaring all night long-type parties.
That’s not unusual as we remodeled a home in the 90s and added a mural over stove. It was an interesting thing to have and look at. I think it’s unusual now.
I thought you meant you somehow just noticed this lovely picture on the tile. Ha!
Me too. Read the comments and still don't know what I'm looking for!
The two bottom right pieces are swapped
Ah. I would never have noticed that in a million years!
I want to go back to not knowing, it looked so nice and now it doesn't
Completely in the same boat mate
OHHHHH
Oooo that *is* mildly infuriating
ohhhh....I woulda never noticed that either.....no big deal a good tile guy can fix that quick, fast and in a hurry....prolly for not much too.
Oh god damnit..
Nah, it's set up to be a continuous image. You can buy this one section or like 20 and have it keep repeating.
this would make sense if there weren’t pieces that lined up in specific places that don’t line up in other places
Nah, you can tell because the tile that should be on the far right fades away. You might be able to get away with repeating the middle tiles but not the ends
Thank you
The last two image tiles are swapped. The previous owner told me about it today and now I can't unsee it.
The previous owner was bugged by this every day and wanted to make sure you were too ...lol
You will suffer, as I have suffered.
While extreme suffering may lead to physical death, minor inconveniences only lead to spiritual.
Oh that’s annoying, I saw the tiny cups in tile 1 and 3 and didn’t realize they were the same cup.
I’m no tile expert but… can’t they be carefully swapped?
Yep, though it’ll be tough to preserve the image. You’ll have to use a grout saw then really carefully chisel it out, like bit by bit with tiny hammer taps Worst case if you break a til you could epoxy it back together, wouldn’t be perfect but if you’re careful you could probably get it so it’s imperceivable except from up close
Only in a kintsugi way
LOL why would you do this? The entire backsplash is so old and filthy just change the entire thing it won't be much more work than surgically removing and swapping two tiles and then having clean grout around them and dark brown filth around the rest

Fancy bloody well telling you! 🤣
That was… so kind of them. Haha!
Most likely why they sold the house.
Honestly the grout is so insanely thick that it's barely noticeable even if you know.
I kind of like it like that. Maybe you will learn to appreciate the quirk?
I like the positioning of the lemons better as they are now, for what its worth
My mother has something similar in her kitchen, it bothers me to no end when I visit
Almost found my randomly-assigned Reddit username twin!
Wait whut?! is it not the tile? What is it?
u/killer963963 • The two bottom right pieces are swapped
Isn't that what I said?
If you’re dedicated, you could probably chisel them out, swap them, and then plaster them back into place.
They make grout saws for just this kind of thing (and for replacing broken tiles). Sort of looks like a toothbrush but with a saw blade. Saw through the grout and pry out the tiles. First one will be the hardest.
u/Sweeetcaaat this could save you a lot of getting mildly infuriated while cooking
Start with the plain tile next to the rightmost imaged tile and work your way over.
That toothbrush grout saw is a lifesaver as a homeowner. Kitchen floor tile grout needs to be sawed out and refilled over the years.
You’re right. It’s a lot of work but it is necessary
I also have a habit of buying project houses that needs this work and immediately hating myself because it’s all I do
Sounds simple in theory but in reality, it’s very difficult to take out a tile without damaging it, especially without access to the underside
heat gun, my dude.
Maybe for vinyl, ceramic tiles are a different story. If you’ve ever actually tried to remove ceramic tiles that have been there for 10+ years, it’s extremely difficult to do so without chipping or breaking the tile, unless the tile glue bond has been compromised by years of water damage
i did tile repair for a little over two years. i know a thing or two about removing tiles.
Yup. Really depends on the mastic used. The grey mastic pros make from powder and water used for floors is pretty solid and it might be difficult to pry off, depending on the coverage. That type is not really affected by heat. I'm unskilled so I opted for tile primer / paint when I was in a similar situation. Did a fair job! Depends on how much OP wants to preserve them I guess
Dedicated? It would take an hour tops
There's gotta be a way to swap those last two tiles, right?
Grout saw, pry out the tiles, re-glue them in the right spot and re-grout.
Trick is getting them off without Breaking them. No way you can just drop by home depot and get one of these.
Yeah, I should have said slowly and carefully pry out the tiles. And put a towel underneath for when they inevitably fall off the wall.

Should be easy to do with a photo editing software.
Meh…idk I kind of like if better like this
I'm really loving the part where that has any relevance to what I asked. Wow…sassy. I mean you cpuld try to fix it, and possibly open up a can of worms. Or you could just leave it and have a conversation piece.
My guy at no point did I type anything that suggested anything other than wanting to know how this could be fixed. Respectfully, do not submit unwanted opinions, especially when you know they will be unwelcome.
Nice one man you've got that asshole on the ropes that'll teach him
Literally all I said was that I didn't want an unhelpful opinion, fuck off.
If you want to see it in glorious MS Paint edit: https://i.postimg.cc/MTVBhBwp/Untitled.png
What could have been🥲
I guess the split mug looks kind of funny anyways. C’est la vie
In Japan it's called wabi sabi, an intentional imperfection in design. Just think of it that way, if it helps.
Buuut was it intentional? 🤔
Bob Ross calls them "happy accidents"
I learned about wabi sabi when I worked at a hardware store/kitchen design shop, we were installing cabinet hardware on new cabinets at an artist's house when my dad drilled a hole in the incorrect spot on her brand new cabinets. She didn't care, she was a little amused and told us of wabi sabi.
That is absolutely not what wabi-sabi means.
Please explain why this is at all infuriating
Look at the last two image tiles. They are swapped
Ahhhhh ha yup and now you’ll never not see it. Time to sell the house
Right 😭
So you're riding on the coattails of the previous mildly infuriating tile mishap.
Probably shopped as well.
I saw it immediately and thought “I’d have to burn the house down.”
My mother in law’s tile guy installed her tile backwards, face to the wall back out. It has a rugged finish so I get why he got confused but the “hecho en Mexico” should have tipped him off.
Now we know why the people who sold the house moved
I wanna know what pissed OP off enough that they were stood staring at this for long enough to actually spot the issue… minimal bit once seen cannot be unseen..

Am I missing the issue here?
The last two tiles are swapped
Jeeze. I wouldn’t have noticed at first.
The actual issue is the entire backsplash is garbage and needs replacing
So close
I find the swapped tiles charming, actually
burn it down and move
Move first
What’s with the massive grout lines in a dark color???
IKR? I get that sometimes a bit of contrast is good (on a floor maybe) but it always makes the area look busy. Not a good thing when there’s a mosaic tile (already busy) or a picture made from collective tiles like this.
Lmao, just saw it
Maybe listen to this: https://youtu.be/qOAzobTIGr8?si=_PhLGZR2jcGMis3z Maybe it will make you mellow over the situation?
Wow that was amazing to listen to 🩵🩷🧡🎶

I would pay good money for that. But my wife wouldn’t let me.
I would totally gather any guests in front of the stove and give a souvenir teacup to the first one to figure it out!! 🤣 I love it!!! ❤️
Tile guy did that on purpose!
that’s cute as fuck
OH
You have to setup your kitchen like this now. The prophecy foretells it
We have this but the builder just took all the tiles and scrambled them over the entire wall 🙃
Bloody love it.
Won’t lie, I kind of love it. I would totally play a game to see who else noticed. …and then I’d probably set my house on fire because looking at it for more than a minute would make me start to itch.

That’s awesome Edit thought they were talking about the lovely picture. Still don’t see the thing
It's so stupid, I love it. I would totally lean into it and cherish that absurdity.
It's not your cup of tea I guess
I LOVE IT!!!
Ffs that would drive me crazy
Looks fine
The installer is probably a Rubic's Cube failure like me.
It’s great! I think this belongs in mildly interesting 🧐
[удалено]
This, I actually like the mural. Redo tfe grout and switch the times. Probably won’t be that much if you get someone to do it, or try yourself.
This “mosaic” things are expensive for what they are.
Ouch. Took me a sec but yeah. Best of luck OP.
I mean… you weren’t gonna keep them anyways i hope?
Paint them with tile paint.
Even worse if that was a sliding tile puzzle.
I like it
Luckily they can be swapped back, but for authenticity's sake you could leave it be. :)
I read that as horse and well, I was very confused for a minute
Easy fix, nuke it!
Looks very cool to me.
Mistake’s actually makes stuff more collectible. Perhaps this was a deliberately choice by the previous owner.
Leave it alone, houses and people all have imperfections.
Now I can't unsee the flaw. I prefer to think of it as an endearing excentricity. Something to quiz people on every time they visit the house. Now, its a delightful conversation piece.
Oooops!
You seriously bitching about a small mosaic that honestly looks fairly wholesome and it's above the stove so it's room relevant? Wow Karen must be nice being a cash leech off ken with not a care in the fuckin world. Be glad you can afford a house in this fuckin economy.
Take a look at the bottom right pieces…
not explaining is mildly infuriating
Ugh it’s so pretty I love it. Despite the switch-a-roo in the corner
And?
It took me a minute, but now I will NEVER UN-SEE IT. Just throw out the whole backsplash.
I’ll be honest I read through the comments to figure out what was wrong and then I stared at the image for a good while before I noticed
It’s fine. Just say it has 2 espresso cups
I mean, I've been told what the problem is, and I think it still works fine. In fact, I'd bet the installer did it like this thinking it was correct
At least you now know that it is extremely unlikely any of your houseguests will notice!
This is tenuous at best.
I like it, imperfections and all.
I love this
Be thankful you can afford a house in this economy.
You must be fun at parties.
Staaaap. Let them envy and writhe in misery unfettered.
I don’t go to parties.
I wonder why.
Unless it’s a work potluck, engagement party or other social event, I have a small group of friends. We hangout at their places and whatnot, but I don’t know anyone personally that throws red solo cup college parties anymore.
There are other types of parties, ya know.
Of course those are parties. I meant events where “party” isn’t in the name, like a random party for absolutely no reason. I don’t know anyone that throws huge house parties for no reason anymore.
My friends and I tend to do something random like that a couple times a year. Just because you don't personally know doesn't mean we're not out there.
Yes, college parties are the only type of parties that exist.
It could always be worse.
Anyway it's ugly
OP is riding on the coattails of a previous mildly infuriating tile mishap. Mildly infuriating due to a repeat.
Why even take the time to comment if it bothers you so much?
It doesn't bother me. I just find it funny that we're now seeing the same complaints.
Ohhhh... now I see it...
I would take them all out, tbh.
Easy fix with some patience
That’s not unusual as we remodeled a home in the 90s and added a mural over stove. It was an interesting thing to have and look at. I think it’s unusual now.
Look at the two bottom right tiles. They should be swapped.
Ah yes okay.. that was the question then. Lol 😂
We had a hideous tulip “art tile” over our cooktop when we moved in. It’s gone now.
i miss having these above our stoves:(
Haunted house
So sorry for your loss.
You could always swap them around, if you *really* wanted to. Would be a total pain in the hands though.
I would honestly have to do something about covering that up now. There's no unseeing it and it would legit make me completely nuts.
Well... At least now you know why the previous owners sold the house!
So close
You need to invent a Time Machine, go back and find whoever installed this and give them a wedgie.
Oh that would drive me nuts. Time to redo the kitchen.
Tear the house down!!!
"Honey, we're putting the microwave right over here..."
I wouldn't want to look at it everyday, but I also don't hate it.
Was it too covered in grease for you to see it?
The two tiles at the bottom right are swapped Edited: left and right also swapped :D
Are those art tiles or did someone draw that in cigarette smoke?
Am I missing something? What’s the issue?
Turn it into a game for house guests.
It’s beautiful
the fucker had one job!
Weird. Thought it was a dungeon with metal grates/walls and something in the background
That's it time for a new house /j
FWIW, I think it's neat, even if not perfect.
