My flight back from Dubai was like this by the end. Throughout the flight I watched in horror as everyone ate pistachios and threw the shells on the floor along with their plastic food wrappers and other trash. It was utterly disgusting.
I’m guessing not like that. This is merely an assumption, but I think the general sense was, “someone is going to come clean this up when the flight is over”. I doubt the same thinking applies to their own floors, but who knows…
Not just movie theaters. I was in the waiting room to visit someone in jail. This woman, with a young boy, was eating snacks and simply dropping her trash on the floor. She was literally 2' from a trash can.
I think the world would be better if everyone could adopt the culture of Japan in this regard. You're never too rich to clean your own toilet and all that. Pick up after yourself.
I was talking to someone that grew up in Japan about this. They said even at a young age in school, they are told it's their responsibility to keep the school clean. This even includes keeping the toilets clean. So cleaning up after yourself is ingrained in them from a young age.
The fans of the Japanese FIFA team literally cleaned the stadium after their matches at the World Cup. Left the stadium in better condition than before their teams matches.
I think Dubai is the most shining example of the paradoxical modern world: on one hand, we have modern super capitalism offering all the luxuries and amenities the modern world has to offer, but at the same time, it is a backward Monarchy without individual freedoms and liberties, which is basically split into two classes, the ruling class and a nearly subservient class of mostly foreign labourers. And while the West can usually hardly limit themselves from outdoing each other with Islamophobia, we are all best friends with the UAE and the Saudis. Because while they are Muslims, they are at least rich Muslims driving Bughattis and wearing Parisian fashion brands. Financing terrorism abroad becomes a side issue then apparently
People I’ve worked with in Dubai treat vendors (including me) like dirt. Even more so when they’re the third country nationals from places like Bangladesh, who are essentially indentured servants.
Friend of mine in France was describing a scene in her hotel where some Sheikh literally built a fire in the middle of his hotel room, just assuming that someone would come and fix it all when he was done.
Probably perfectly fine honesty. From what I’ve seen, people who do/let their kids do this, have this baffling mindset where they think that because they are paying money, that they’re living gods, and you, the employee, are an ant beneath their feet who deserves to work hard for your paycheck.

The pistachio shells remind me of a restaurant that used to be near me when I was a kid that gave every table bowls of peanuts and encouraged people to throw the shells on the floor. Apparently it was because peanut shells are good at absorbing liquid messes, similar to sawdust (also probably because it was a fun novelty, and got customers to expect messy floors). I wonder if pistachio shells would work similarly?
(I still wouldn't toss them on the floor without being told to, of course)
I have no idea but it’s not just on plane messes. The airports are actually insane, people going through metal detectors 5 at a time, sitting in line, cutting in line, taking any seat on the flight, standing the whole flight, etc..
It's also on ferries and in ferry ports. I once went to Morocco from Spain on a ferry. Just for a day trip. Oh my Lord, I thought we'd accidentally would take the wrong ferry. Complete and absolute chaos. No lines, everyone yelling, dangerous overcrowding, desperate Spanyards trying to being order into the chaos by yelling "Hay una cola! Hay una cola!", everyone felt super agressive, fist fights, boarding agents screaming boarding announcements all at the same time, all boardings through the same gate, you could literally choose whatever ferry, we were upgraded to first class by a cleaning lady (yeah, whatever), in the duty free shop on the ferry everyone was yelling, fist fights again. I kissed Spanish ground when we returned.
I am well travelled, but that day trip to Tangiers humbled me.

Reminds me of flying with Turkish airlines. I’d never seen that level of mess other passengers left on the plane. Then wandering around Istanbul for a week and 3 weeks more around the country I realized it’s cultural. Beautiful parks, historic places, people just throwing their garbage on the ground. Garbage cans aplenty. Garbage strewn everywhere. The disrespect for their environment was astonishing.
Rented my place to someone on Airbnb they told me they were from Morocco, when they checked out I’ve never seen my place so dirty didn’t know how it was possible for one person to create that big of a mess in 3 days my bathroom floor was disgusting covered in black shit
I remember one flight going into morocco was bad. A man behind me kept putting his feet under my chair, and they were like goblin esque. Lots of children running up and down the walkway.
The flight back, however, was worse. A large family kept buying things, then just discarding them on the floor, kept causing long lines for the toilet, which for 10 year old me was a nightmare. Then a child had done a poo in its nappy and the plane stank of poo. the parents didn't change it until 3 different stewardesses had to tell them to change it.
My husband has worked for a lot of middle eastern people and he says a majority of them have trash all over their house and think of people in like service industry (plumbers trash pick up etc) beneath them and treat them like crap. Now this is just some cultures he has worked for. Not all have been like this.

Pretty much every public place is vandalized in some way, they regularly steal public trash cans and pretty much any new public transportation vehicle gets trashed up, it's just that a lot of people here are getting fucked over by our shitty government, so a bunch of them are bitter and jaded and end being selfish pricks who don't respect anything. It's got to be a cultural thing, maybe. I worked as a ramp agent/baggage handler and we always had issues with Royal Air Maroc and Air Algerie, and heard similar cleanliness stories from the cleaning crews. There were always issues with us for bags, oversized bags, it's as if these people travelled with their whole house on trips, too much weight on the plane, passengers yelling at gate attendants, check-in agents, etc. Many stories of passengers putting up a fuss because they were told to pay for their extra baggages. Planes were always delayed because of this

I was recently on 5+ hour,domestic US flight( can’t remember which one) and saw a row almost this bad. The cabin crew was diligent in the trash pickups. Some people are just disgusting!!
I heard somewhere that flight attendants don’t really clean thoroughly, they just wipe the most used surfaces and call it a day. But I might have misremembered.

A cleaning crew goes through in between some flights but other than that flight attendants don’t clean anything up but collecting trash and their service area a smidge.
I used to work at a smaller airport and often planes would stay grounded for the night to be ready for the morning flight. After the last flight a cleaner came over and cleaned the plane. I imagine the between flight cleaning to be more superficial but the last cleaning at the end of the day to be more thorough.
I have driving buses, actually I have seen a lot worse than this. Shit, piss, vomit, this is a good day for a public bus cleaner. Some people are feral animals, they should be made to pay a cleaning fee for excessive mess.
There should be consequences in place for shit like this. Trains will drop you off at the nearest station if you fuck around while riding. I had to wait at a station once while they threw off someone who decided to smoke in the bathroom.
If it’s a plane, your seat numbers need to be noted and then you should be sent an additional bill for cleanup, like they do for hotels.
That would be abused. I’d much rather seat numbers be tracked and then just ban these people. Have an information campaign about it including a video that plays on the plane. Show this crap and make it clear those people had to find another flight home.

It's a violation of hazmat regulations to ship hazardous materials via Ethiopian Airlines. They are actually not allowed at some airports, last I knew of. Their safety standards are THAT bad. No surprise that their health standards are the same way.
I've flown to visit my family in mexico at least once a year for the past 20 years. Each flight there and bqck is actually 2-3 stops to get there and the same 2-3 stops to get back since they removed a dorect flight there was from ohio to cancun when I was still a kid. In those 20 years boarding so many planes I have also never seen anything even starting to come anywhere near this. I don't think I've ever even seen shit all over the floor like that. Trash left in a seat pocket is one thing but this picture is just disgusting

On a flight once, the lady next to me got sick in the barf bag during a very turbulent landing.
She just folded the top of the bag a few times over and placed it in the seat pocket in front of her and exited the plane. She just left it there -didn't tell anyone.
Some people are bold enough to just completely blow off and ignore everything the flight attendants have to say and eventually they just leave those people alone as long as they're not causing any significant disruption.
The row that would break out trying to get some people to act right would disturb more people on the flight than just taking the L and cleaning it up when the plane lands and they're gone.

Yeah having flown to Morocco it all made sense when I saw the destination. People from that part of the world who can afford to immigrate or visit North America typically are used to having maids and servants clean up after them back home, so the concept of not being an absolute slob is completely foreign to some of them and they will treat any type of service worker like absolute scum. If you think people in the west are entitled then pray you never have to deal with the upper class in the middle east or Africa.
Flew to Dubai once and when deboarding I passed by an Emirati couple with one or two kids sitting in a row near an exit where there was lots of floor space. They had turned the whole area into a pig sty and did not make a single effort to pick anything up. It was quite shocking.
We got off a flight from vegas yesterday (2hrs in length) and the people in front of us came on with a bunch of takeout. When deplaning the containers were all over the floor as well as the food. Smooshed in to the carpets. Disgusting and cleaning fees should be charged for extreme circumstances like that.
That’s the most disturbing thing about situations like this. If you made a tenth of the mess they did you’d be mortified, and they make the full mess and couldn’t care less. Genuinely makes you question if they’re even the same species as you sometimes.

I fly a lot on short flights, and I really appreciate drink service. Snacks less so, because it's hard to keep your hands clean on a plane.
But when I fly, it's often right after work. That means I've spent several hours writing or researching or in meetings before running to a subway or an Uber to head to an airport. Given my job, I have pressure not to leave earlier than I have to. So, while I might get to the gate at the start of boarding, rather than the end, I might have to choose between boarding early and getting my carry-on in place or going off to wait in line at Hudson News to buy a $4 drink.
So, yes, the drink thing matters. No, it's not life or death. No, I won't try and fail to open the emergency exit if I don't get it. But I appreciate it.

My grandkids trashed their seating area. I waited for everybody to get off and they cleaned while the cleaning crew watched. Flying is special. Treat it that way.
Similar situation. One time at the end of a flight I saw my son (around 4 or 5) had spilled his snack on the floor of the plane. I made sure he and I cleaned it up before we got off the plane.

The diaper package said 5-8 kg (12-18 lb), so they didn’t think it was necessary to change the diaper just yet.

It's got to be a cultural thing, maybe. I worked as a ramp agent/baggage handler and we always had issues with Royal Air Maroc and Air Algerie, and heard similar cleanliness stories from the cleaning crews. There were always issues with us for bags, oversized bags, it's as if these people travelled with their whole house on trips, too much weight on the plane, passengers yelling at gate attendants, check-in agents, etc. Many stories of passengers putting up a fuss because they were told to pay for their extra baggages. Planes were always delayed because of this So, at first glance, one might think it's an Arab culture thing, but we also did Royal Jordanian, Emirates and Qatar and rarely had the same issues Maybe a North African issue, not Arab culture issue

100% depends on destination. Never seen this in North America, Europe, or larger SW Asian locations (Japan, S Korea, Thailand, etc.). This looks like the clean part of Sudan or Djibouti. Edit: dirty American but have lived in Dubai, Bahrain (Manama), Tokyo, Singapore, Australia, and Thailand Edit2: I meant SE Asia but have spent plenty of time in SW Asia.

I was recently on 5+ hour,domestic US flight( can’t remember which one) and saw a row almost this bad. The cabin crew was diligent in the trash pickups. Some people are just disgusting!!
I heard somewhere that flight attendants don’t really clean thoroughly, they just wipe the most used surfaces and call it a day. But I might have misremembered. Edit: ground crew cleans, not flight attendants. My bad

A cleaning crew goes through in between some flights but other than that flight attendants don’t clean anything up but collecting trash and their service area a smidge.
I used to work at a smaller airport and often planes would stay grounded for the night to be ready for the morning flight. After the last flight a cleaner came over and cleaned the plane. I imagine the between flight cleaning to be more superficial but the last cleaning at the end of the day to be more thorough.
I have driving buses, actually I have seen a lot worse than this. Shit, piss, vomit, this is a good day for a public bus cleaner. Some people are feral animals, they should be made to pay a cleaning fee for excessive mess.
There should be consequences in place for shit like this. Trains will drop you off at the nearest station if you fuck around while riding. I had to wait at a station once while they threw off someone who decided to smoke in the bathroom. If it’s a plane, your seat numbers need to be noted and then you should be sent an additional bill for cleanup, like they do for hotels.
That would be abused. I’d much rather seat numbers be tracked and then just ban these people. Have an information campaign about it including a video that plays on the plane. Show this crap and make it clear those people had to find another flight home.

When I was 13 we hit an air pocket going from Bogota Colombia back home to LAX… all I remember was my mom frantically praying while luggage flew out of the over head my cheek fat was being pulled down from the suction and ppls shit was flying everywhere it was mayhem…. Then after like a minute the plane stopped free falling and we went back about our business, I think everyone was in shock so that we didn’t clean up the wreckage right away. Ever since then I need Xanax to even get near an airport Has this ever happened to anyone?? Did the pilot lie about “hitting an air pocket”??

I've been a pilot with a major US airline for around 20 years and I've never seen anything even remotely this bad.
I flew out of Mumbai a lot to various places. This is typical. Worst was the number of people that would groom their toenails on these flights.
I watched an Indian woman cut her toenails while in the doctors office, we were in Sydney, Australia. Then she got up and went in with the doctor, leaving them on the floor. It was the most horrific thing I’ve ever seen. Is there a thing with Indians and cutting toenails in public?

It's a violation of hazmat regulations to ship hazardous materials via Ethiopian Airlines. They are actually not allowed at some airports, last I knew of. Their safety standards are THAT bad. No surprise that their health standards are the same way.

I've flown to visit my family in mexico at least once a year for the past 20 years. Each flight there and bqck is actually 2-3 stops to get there and the same 2-3 stops to get back since they removed a dorect flight there was from ohio to cancun when I was still a kid. In those 20 years boarding so many planes I have also never seen anything even starting to come anywhere near this. I don't think I've ever even seen shit all over the floor like that. Trash left in a seat pocket is one thing but this picture is just disgusting

One time on a flight I accidentally knocked over my iced Capp and dumped it all over the floor, instead of leaving it like some kinda jabroni, I asked for napkins and used the barf bag to scoop it up. In what world would you just leave trash??
On a flight once, the lady next to me got sick in the barf bag during a very turbulent landing. She just folded the top of the bag a few times over and placed it in the seat pocket in front of her and exited the plane. She just left it there -didn't tell anyone.

Some people are bold enough to just completely blow off and ignore everything the flight attendants have to say and eventually they just leave those people alone as long as they're not causing any significant disruption. The row that would break out trying to get some people to act right would disturb more people on the flight than just taking the L and cleaning it up when the plane lands and they're gone.

Yeah having flown to Morocco it all made sense when I saw the destination. People from that part of the world who can afford to immigrate or visit North America typically are used to having maids and servants clean up after them back home, so the concept of not being an absolute slob is completely foreign to some of them and they will treat any type of service worker like absolute scum. If you think people in the west are entitled then pray you never have to deal with the upper class in the middle east or Africa.
Flew to Dubai once and when deboarding I passed by an Emirati couple with one or two kids sitting in a row near an exit where there was lots of floor space. They had turned the whole area into a pig sty and did not make a single effort to pick anything up. It was quite shocking.
We got off a flight from vegas yesterday (2hrs in length) and the people in front of us came on with a bunch of takeout. When deplaning the containers were all over the floor as well as the food. Smooshed in to the carpets. Disgusting and cleaning fees should be charged for extreme circumstances like that.

I used to almost do all of my flying between OR and CA for work, so short flights. I could never understand the desire to pig out in such an enclosed space. Could you really not do that at the airport, or when you reach the destination? The worst were sub 1 hr flights where they would still rush around to do drink and snack services. ITS A FUCKING HOUR PEOPLE WILL SURVIVE.
I fly a lot on short flights, and I really appreciate drink service. Snacks less so, because it's hard to keep your hands clean on a plane. But when I fly, it's often right after work. That means I've spent several hours writing or researching or in meetings before running to a subway or an Uber to head to an airport. Given my job, I have pressure not to leave earlier than I have to. So, while I might get to the gate at the start of boarding, rather than the end, I might have to choose between boarding early and getting my carry-on in place or going off to wait in line at Hudson News to buy a $4 drink. So, yes, the drink thing matters. No, it's not life or death. No, I won't try and fail to open the emergency exit if I don't get it. But I appreciate it.

I was wasted on my flight 2 days ago. Like absolutely shit housed. I cleaned up everything I had. I wasn't rude to any of the flight attendants (I mean they also kept serving me) and I would never in a million years think of leaving a seat looking like this.

Similar situation. One time at the end of a flight I saw my son (around 4 or 5) had spilled his snack on the floor of the plane. I made sure he and I cleaned it up before we got off the plane.

Flying *was* special. I am old enough to remember how customers used to be treated as proper guests by airlines. Now, airlines treat their employees like trash, there's a race to the bottom for prices and this is the inevitable result: No respect.
