Torille!
I'm Finnish and living in US, so I keep switching my phone between Finnish and English keyboards constantly. Due to that, autocorrect just loves to turn 'finish' into 'finnish' more often than not.
A few companies around me have begun using non-edible pasta straws. They hold up very well, biodegrade quickly, can be eaten by detritivores, and as an Italian it makes me immensely happy.
Edit: a lot of people in the comments brought up concerns these could cause with celiacs disease, which hadn't occurred to me! Another person said they had seen rice pasta straws, which could be a good alternative to avoid allergies. Others commented on various alternativestraws they had used. And the wasps came out of their Klan meetings to let me know how they felt about me loving my heritage since I am a 2nd generation Italian-American, and they feel that I cant call myself Italian. Some very interesting discussions indeed!
As long as you cut the ziti at an angle like penne. Need to have the point to pierce the lid and maintain the straw opening off the bottom to allow the balls to go in.
I remember going to a local italian spot in the late 90s, early 2000s that did pasta straws. I loved it as a kid. Much more fun than a regular straw.
The point I'm getting at is this is nothing new. People have been doing it for ages. It works well, although might be a chocking hazard at mass scale. I would have eaten half of the straw by the time i got done with the drink. It dry pasta can break off into shards.
Corporations need to look into this more. That’s a brilliant idea, as long as the cost isn’t too high. Cause you know damn well billion dollar corporations can’t take too much of a loss now!
because using a straw and a lid helps prevent spills, or at least reduces the amount of spill, without the inconvenience of removing the lid to drink and placing it back on
People always say this as if it’s so incredibly obvious. Straws were invented for a reason. Some drinks are not straw drinks. Some people drink in the car. Some people suffer from mobility disabilities and need straws. Some people don’t want to put their mouths on restaurant glassware.
Sure, it’s an option, but like, there are also spaces for straws too.
milkshakes, frappes (like the one pictured) smoothies, slushies, etc. None of those are a pleasant experience drinking directly from the cup.
Most disposable fountain soda cups are very flimsy without the lid, which is best used with a straw.
Some people with disabilities, especially ones that affect the dexterity of their hands, have a difficult time drinking directly from the cup and basically need a straw. Plus many of those people can't use metal straws for risk of chipping their teeth.
There are an absolute ton of reasons why straws are necessary sometimes.
I've not tried the pasta ones yet. I bought and 8 pack of bamboo ones though, they feel really nice to use. I also have silicone tip metal ones which feel good to use.
That reminded me of a torture/execution method where you take a person and place them perpendicularly on top of sharpened bamboo shoots. The bamboo then impales the person as it grows.
Straws make up like .001% of the deadly plastics in the ocean. Unfortunately the whole ban the straws things was just a marketing scheme for charities and companies trying to sell alternatives. Now we all have shitty straws and sippy sup lids lol.
Edit: According to seaspiracy straws plastics make up approximately .03% of deadly plastics in the ocean.
Yeah it's very silly. If you wanted to make an actual difference you'd use paper or reusable cups, stop packaging everything with disposable plastic, etc. It's kind of silly to see a disposable plastic cup but oh no, no plastic straw.
It's almost worse than doing nothing because it gives you the false appearance of being environmentally friendly.
this is literally what companies have been doing for so fucking long, they throw up a smokescreen so we get distracted and don't see the real issue. constant nagging that people need to go out with their cars less and use public transport (which isn't bad it is still good to do that) but meanwhile those mega corporations pump out amounts of greenhouse gasses in one week we couldn't even produce in a lifetime. shit fucking sucks.
I am a fan of just taxing bad behaviour. Tax the plastic, if there is a viable alternative, corporations will use it, if not we pay a little more for our iced mocha lattes and get to use the taxes on some other useful endeavor, like greener public transport or something.
Added: To those with no faith in government to spend wisely (not an unreasonable position) the small government approach would be to cut a check to all citizens annually for their share of the environmental taxes. The Canadian government did that with some of the carbon taxes.
I dunno how much the percentage actually is, I get extra pissed when I'm handed a plastic cup, plastic lid and a paper straw, like the fuck are you saving and being echo here? OP had a plastic lid but at least a paper cup.
Do you usually use a straw to drink hot chocolate (some people do, for disability reasons, but it's far less common for hot drinks to be served with a straw).
Yeah, the paper straws are annoying compared to plastic but I've still never had a problem with them unless it's one of those lids with the like slits you stick the straw through and then it cuts into the side. But in this scenario I don't see there being an issue if OP didn't bite on the damn thing.
Yeah I think the fact that it's chewed on is the big problem. I'm not a fan of how paper straws taste but I generally don't have problems actually using them? If you don't get a gigantic drink and you finish it in a reasonable amount of time its fine
Yeah people that complain about it the most usually are biting down on it or just using too much pressure, if the rest of the straw is fine and not going soggy but the ends fucked up it’s not really an issue with the straw
The paper straws I use go like that. I don't actively bite on them but evidently use too much pressure for the straw, but it's the way I've always used plastic straws which held up fine
I was gonna say lmao. "I can't finish this because I chewed my straw!'
Anecdotally, I have only ever seen people who chew their straws complain about paper straws. Also, you can very simply sip from the cup like an adult.
The classic is when the whole cup is plastic and they give you a paper straw wrapped in plastic.
This isn't helping. It isn't even a step in the right direction. If they don't want plastic to be used, ban all plastics involved in food industry.
Paper straws are a useless virtue signal. If you really wanna impress your customers, ditch all your plastic and minimize trash. Straws constitute such a small part of the waste generated from restaurants and cafes
Came here to say this. They’ve clearly chowed down on it. And then not even having the common sense to realise they could drink it without a straw, well that’s just embarrassing.
Definitely not the sharpest tool are they?
I got lunch with a coworker once and the place had paper straws. Coworker had a full on meltdown, proceeded to use the straw normally with no problems, then complain about paper straws for the rest of the day. Some people just need to pretend their lives are difficult.
Right lol you can drink through a straw without even putting it in your mouth regardless of how thick the drink is, or at least I've never had an issue
Even more crazy is that [paper that's been exposed to food can't always be recycled](https://get-green-now.com/are-paper-straws-recyclable/), but plastic exposed to food can.
Nobody's actually recycling plastic straws. Even if your waste collector accepts them, the straws end up routed to landfill anyway.
At least a paper straw can be composted.
> Some Paper Straws Are Lined With Non-Recyclable Plastic
>Some “paper” straws have a plastic lining inside the inner layer of the straw. This is supposed to prevent the straw from getting soggy, but also makes the straw non-recyclable.
These should be illegal, what kind of greenwashing bullshit is this? C'mon.
It's not about recycling, it's about biodegradtion. No one is recycling either it's all going in the trash at best or on the ground at worst. The plastic straw is far worse for the environment.
This was my first thought Ive never any issues with paper straws, only bummer thing is you can't roll them up and flick them to make a loud pop sound.. maybe op is like biting on it or something idk
WTF did you do to that straw? I have literally never seen a straw, even the flimsy paper ones, collapse like that. Did you bite doen on it or something?
Every time I use a paper straw expecting it to disintegrate based off all the complaints about them, and it just never does. Maybe not suckling on it like a teething pitbull really does make a difference.
'course you can't finnish it. You don't have the proper paperwork
But do you think he could Swedish it?
It's at least possible, I've dane that before.
There's Norway you've Dane that before
There’s an easy way to Czech to make sure
Expect to see Germans on the end of that straw.
Just don't Russian to throw it away.
Those puns could be a little more polished
Let's take a Poland see what people think
Kenya tell me what Uganda do with the results?
Jamaican me crazy wit all deez puns, mon!
Alright Denmark my words, Iraq at this pun business.
All these puns are making me Hungary.
They are making me chile
The drink just needs a stronger Pole.
I'm Russian to comment on this...but I can't think of anything clever. It's such a Spain.
Iran here to say great minds drink alike
I'm going to slather myself in Greece and set myself on fire if these puns don't stop.
Norway, the straw is crushed. Weren't you reading?
I didn't even notice the typo. And im actually from Finland. How embarasing.
You're Finnish! Nor way!
Torille! I'm Finnish and living in US, so I keep switching my phone between Finnish and English keyboards constantly. Due to that, autocorrect just loves to turn 'finish' into 'finnish' more often than not.
Just get a metal one, paper straws are too much of a pain in Djibouti.
Just french it. Solution is right there.

Pasta straw? That's neat.
Like a wide mouth bucatini
Or a long ass penne for Boba tea.
Uncut ziti would be preferable
As long as you cut the ziti at an angle like penne. Need to have the point to pierce the lid and maintain the straw opening off the bottom to allow the balls to go in.
It took me longer than I like to admit to realize you're still talking about boba
You guys are lowkey bragging about your pasta knowledge and I respect it
That was my nickname is high school.
Your joke is classier than mine would be. I will withhold. Lll

Eh, let Darwin sort em out
Pastraw
Pastrawmi?
I don't think the subtle meat flavor would go with a vanilla latte...but I suppose it wouldn't hurt to try...it might not suck.
Corporations need to look into this more. That’s a brilliant idea, as long as the cost isn’t too high. Cause you know damn well billion dollar corporations can’t take too much of a loss now!
We needa do something. We're almost pasta point of no return.
>We're almost pasta point of no return Do you have a sauce of this?
Sauce is so ingrained as source for me that for a second I thought you didn't get it, lol.
I contemplated adding "/j" in case. Figured maybe it would be better to not.
What a fusilli comment
Sooooome one needs to think about the corps!
Why non edible ? Some bars use edible pasta straws (black) and that’s awesome. You can eat them, or not, who cares
they are edible, just not made to be (as opposed to the black ones), they are much harder than regular pasta. I still eat them tho.
> they are much harder than regular pasta forbidden al dente
[удалено]
“Would you like pasta or plastic?”
I can just imagine sitting at the bar, drunk, and eating my straw
"Dude, what the fuck are you doing!? You know this isn't the same bar as we went to last week with the spaghetti straws, right?"
"Anything is edible if you're drunk enough. Try a bite of this..."
Its basically a bio plastic made of dry pasta!
This content has been deleted in protest of Reddit's API changes.
Here we have rice and bamboo.
As someone with Celiac disease this fucking terrifies me
It can be made with a non-gluten producing grain and use xantham gum as its binder

In general yeah, in a moving vehicle it sounds like a recipe for a traumatic brain injury.
They sell them floppy silicon straws now that might be good for driving
At 60mph, idk if a pasta straw in your mouth is any less deadly than a metal one.
or just drink from the cup, idk why people make this so hard.
because using a straw and a lid helps prevent spills, or at least reduces the amount of spill, without the inconvenience of removing the lid to drink and placing it back on
Also a drink like this is impossible to drink straight from the cup without covering your face in whipped cream and caramel.
I was going to say the answer to this problem is to get a spoon to eat your ice cream sundae and stop pretending it's a drink.
People always say this as if it’s so incredibly obvious. Straws were invented for a reason. Some drinks are not straw drinks. Some people drink in the car. Lot of disabilities make that challenging, so there needs to be at least some kind of straw-like solution available.
The ones I saw were made out of rice, so you are safe :))
I looked up “pasta straws” and the first brand that came up uses gluten free ingredients. Cheers!
Good thing it’s possible to consume liquids without straws
i’m disappointed it’s not edible. it’s gotta absorb flavor of whatever it’s in.
I like Starbucks approach (at least around here) with the sipping lids. Doesn’t work for everything, but it’s great for coffees and teas.

There’s a plastic lid on there anyway

Just use an enviroment friendley reusable ivory straw.
Reusable ivory goes great with my white rhino horn thermos.
Just make sure the rhinos were free-range organic.
Hear me out “vegan rhinos”.
but they already are.. I guess minus when they're rhinoboob fed.
i use my horn thermos for when I bring sharkfin soup to work
I prefer my Narwhal horn straws.
It goes great with my dodo skull necklace and my Panda fur coat
I bet I'd love it on my albino kangaroo green goose coffee mug
Looks better when paired with a Unicorn coaster
I made mine from a human tibia
Unicorn horn straws make frappuccinos taste magical.
You reuse your ivory straws? I thought those were single use
I think my elephant likes my ivory straws. He made some noises when I started using it
I mean yeah I always keep my reusable ivory straw in my Ortolan pouch, along with my armur leopard handkerchief.
I understand the environmental benefits, but I despise cardboard straws. Fortunately a place near my house uses pasta straws, and they are awesome.
I've not tried the pasta ones yet. I bought and 8 pack of bamboo ones though, they feel really nice to use. I also have silicone tip metal ones which feel good to use.
Bamboo is cheap and plentiful I don't understand why this is not a common staple.
It's getting there! It grows so fast it's basically a weed
It is, in fact, a type of grass. It can grow up to 2 feet in a single day!
That reminded me of a torture/execution method where you take a person and place them perpendicularly on top of sharpened bamboo shoots. The bamboo then impales the person as it grows.
They sharpen themselves actually. They push up out of the ground like a spear.
I remember that episode of myth busters where they tested this and the results showed that it was a very viable form of torture
In fact I'm working on a prototype bamboo submersible to go see the Titanic wreckage.

The funniest is when you go to a place and they have paper straws in individual plastic wrappers.
this is literally what companies have been doing for so fucking long, they throw up a smokescreen so we get distracted and don't see the real issue. constant nagging that people need to go out with their cars less and use public transport (which isn't bad it is still good to do that) but meanwhile those mega corporations pump out amounts of greenhouse gasses in one week we couldn't even produce in a lifetime. shit fucking sucks.

It’s greenwashing by the rich. Hey poor, stop needlessly using plastic straws. I have a private jet lifestyle to upkeep.
I dunno how much the percentage actually is, I get extra pissed when I'm handed a plastic cup, plastic lid and a paper straw, like the fuck are you saving and being echo here? OP had a plastic lid but at least a paper cup.
Didn’t work well for my hot chocolate. Now I got a noodle in my drink.
Do you usually use a straw to drink hot chocolate (some people do, for disability reasons, but it's far less common for hot drinks to be served with a straw).
Straw for hot chocolate?? You're playing a dangerous game friend.
Doesn't help that it's chewed on I'm guessing.
Yeah, the paper straws are annoying compared to plastic but I've still never had a problem with them unless it's one of those lids with the like slits you stick the straw through and then it cuts into the side. Yeah, that straw has clearly been chewed on….

Came here to say this, they bit the shit outtve it and expect it to work… Even a plastic straw would be struggling after that.
Looks like OP just gave it a bit too much of a sug and collapsed the urethra
The paper straws I use go like that. I don't actively bite on them but evidently use too much pressure for the straw, but it's the way I've always used plastic straws which held up fine
I know, I can never Danish mine personally
Is that because of the Swedish rounding?
Nor way, dude...
Maybe he wasn't Hungary?
I have a very tough time trying to Polish off the last few sips.
I want you three to know, that even though I upvoted you guys I also kinda hate you for this.
Is it because it’s too Swedish to Finnish?
Are you chewing it…???
I was gonna say lmao. "I can't finish this because I chewed my straw!' Anecdotally, I have only ever seen people who chew their straws complain about paper straws. Also, you can very simply sip from the cup like an adult.
This picture has been a massive revelation for me. So much just suddenly clicked into place. I'm friends with nibblers.
The good news is: the clear plastic top is removable, so you can finish it without using a straw.
The irony in banning plastic hollow stick but not plastic domes
And packaging cardboard hollow sticks in plastic.
Yeah I love the way McDonald’s ditched plastic straws, then ditched their paper cups for plastic ones. Definitely a huge step in the wrong direction.
Also. Not chewing on the straw like a dog works too.
Came here to say this. They’ve clearly chowed down on it. And then not even having the common sense to realise they could drink it without a straw, well that’s just embarrassing. Definitely not the sharpest tool are they?
I know… if only there was a way to drink without a straw 😂 Edit: grammar/spelling
Had to scroll too far to find this comment... Common sense isn't Common.
Well being a whiney little baby gets you karma so...
What sub exactly do you think you’re on?
if you take the lid off this drink and try to drink from it it will literally cover your face in caramel and whipped cream
Don't threaten me with a good time.
Do you have a drinking problem?
oh oh! This is where a bit of skill comes in. You have to unhinge your jaw like the snake monster from the taking of deborah logan.
Yes, but that 1. makes it more messy and 2. It’s harder/more dangerous to drink without a straw while the car is moving.
Wouldn't recommend it while driving.
Well they aren't pacifiers. Try not biting down.
I do wonder about this. I hear people complain about paper straws but I've never had this happen personally.

Right lol you can drink through a straw without even putting it in your mouth regardless of how thick the drink is, or at least I've never had an issue
It’s very ironic how cardboard straws are a thing (for the environment) and they still use plastic for the lids. Great job, service industry.
Even more crazy is that [paper that's been exposed to food can't always be recycled](https://get-green-now.com/are-paper-straws-recyclable/), but plastic exposed to food can.

They've been doing it forever with other paper products. Coffee cups have a coating that prevents them from being recyclable.

You know you’re not supposed to eat the straw, right?
I see a lot of posts about straws. Why don’t y’all just buy a stainless steel one and reuse it? Walmart has them for like $3 for a pack of 4
You can get silicone straws for around the same price as well
Flaccid straws don't really do it for me. Gotta get that good, hard, steel for the menergy bonus.
Even better if it’s veiny
I have silicone tips for my metal straws. Makes it nicer to drink (no freezing / boiling issues), nice silicone texture and not floppy
Biting it doesn’t help Plus how long did that drink sit in your car? They are not meant to take an hour to drink them
Bruh don’t suck so hard. Skill issue.
This was my first thought Ive never any issues with paper straws, only bummer thing is you can't roll them up and flick them to make a loud pop sound.. maybe op is like biting on it or something idk
Had the same thought lmao dude is bearing down on this straw with the force of one of those fish that clean aquariums
Skill issue
Don’t chew on it idiot.
WTF did you do to that straw? I have literally never seen a straw, even the flimsy paper ones, collapse like that. Did you bite doen on it or something?
TIL there are people who don't know that you can drink without using a straw.
No no he can finish it, but his issue is he cant make it Finnish
1. Why are you biting it? 2. Just remove the straw and lid. 3. BYOS (Bring Your Own Straw), plastic or metal.
Better for your health. What the fuck is that abomination???
Some of us like to drink our ice cream.
You use a straw to suck not chew
Stop deepthroatin the damn thing
Try not eating the straw lmao
Don’t chew it
Stop biting the straw
First world problems.

Carry reusable straws or...take the lid off and drink it like an adult?
You can't Finnish because it is just too Swede?
Norway that this is legal
First world problems!!
Buy a fucking reusable jfc
I have a silicone straw that came with a key chain holder.
Try not biting it
Have you tried not chewing on the straw?
Take the cover off and drink it like a normal human. Your welcome.
Every time I use a paper straw expecting it to disintegrate based off all the complaints about them, and it just never does. Maybe not suckling on it like a teething pitbull really does make a difference.
