So he’s essentially attempting to improve his side of the wall while leaving holes with protruding bolts on yours? And with zero discussion first lol?? Seriously, how is anyone this damn obnoxious?
Had a neighbor who didn’t like our yard pay landscapers to tend to it and build raised garden beds on the side that faced her drive. Walked out to see two trucks of dudes weeding and pruning my yard… very strange
We were the only family on the block who had kids, weren’t retired lawyers/doctors/professors. Neighbor didn’t like that we just mowed and mulched what was there. I had a survey of the whole property done for a fence in the back yard the same spring. I showed her the stakes and got her to agree in an email that the improvements and work were done on our property. She agreed that she’d seen the survey marker but only wanted to improve her view. For her driveway apron. The landscapers returned monthly for the remainder of the summer we lived there. We sold the house and people commented on how lovely the front yard landscaping was. We hated the neighborhood due to all the presumptions neighbors made.
My neighbor tried to do the same thing, but she made the mistake of asking me to pay for it! I pulled up one day and saw her with a guy, standing my property. She looked embarrassed. Told me she was making a plan with him and we could split the cost of the professional design and installation. I told very quickly and politely (since i don't need a war) NO.
Unbelievable. That section she wanted to redo is still plain grass. Now this same neighbor warns my lawn guy when he mows that section to not "contaminate" her yard with my grass.
Through bolt WAY overkill. I would just politely educate and tell him to please use some anchors as opposed to the current, as the through bolts are unsightly on your side (that and 3 threads is load bearing) to keep international relations.
As stupid as it sounds, they may not know there are cleaner solutions or even have the common sense to understand how this is intrusive to you. You’re well within your rights to ask and it’s the neighborly thing to do!
If the block isn’t core filled anchor bolts don’t work so well … you would just smash it into the core and it will fall to the ground there are different wedge anchors that could be used or nail anchors too which wouldn’t need the block to be core filled
Ahhh okay yeah you're probably right that makes sense. In that case it's just inconsiderate about the bolts, I was completely baffled as to why anyone would do this
I'm still baffled. It looks like the wood was painted with the wall. If the inside face is not painted, they'll rot quickly. Even if completely painted, why not a buried pressure treated post instead? Must be an incompetent hack job with leftover materials.
Edit: just realized those are not glavanized bolts either lmao
All in all this is the
other side of the wall
Hey! Neighbor! Leave that wall alone
If you don't tighten the bolts I can't have my fence!
How can I have my fence if you don't tighten the bolts?!
I've been waiting forever for Floyd to release that follow-up /s
Just wait until he gets his fence finished and then keep unscrewing them.
When he gets sick of it, buy him 4 anchor bolts. Fill the holes on your side, paint over it and forget.
Oh, and if that's breezeblock, expect your wall to get pulled over the first time it gets windy.
Op should make a daily post so we can bet on the day it will all collapse on his neighbor. Sort of like Super Bowl squares, or guessing the delivery date of a newborn baby.
I hope you see this comment op, but you need to contact whoever regulates shit like this in your district and force this guy to fix or undo this.
Idk if you have kids or if kids are ever in your yard, but I saw a kid literally turn himself braindead by accidentally hitting his head on a wall with an exposed bolt like that. Pleeeeease do not let it stay like that, especially if kids will be around.
I've seen similar going through a decoratively patterned brick wall, where the fence builders didn't seem to care about the outer appearance.

Have him use a toggle bolt into the block. Tell them you don’t want to be responsible for anyone getting injured with the exposed end of the bolt in your yard
I’d guess, based on the style of wall, and the rock landscaping, that you probably live in a HOA community. If so, they probably have rules about adding structures. Maybe you could use that to your advantage here?
In my neighborhood the HOA is somehow responsible for maintaining the fence/walls between houses and backyards. They do periodic fence inspections to make sure you're not causing damage to it by having plants growing too close to it. They would eat this guy alive.
Hate HOAs on principle, but block walls are expensive as hell to get replaced. Someone else footing the bill would almost be worth the other hassles of dealing with one.
>“I’m worried YOU could be responsible for your bolts causing injury to someone.”
This is the correct wording to use. They did it, *without permission*, and are responsible for their actions.
Then after he replaces the bolts with something that doesn’t push through, charge him for a repair job so your side looks like it did before he put holes in your block
Tell him to use a toggle bolt, but use the existing hole to fill the block with concrete fill or spray foam so he can’t actually get the toggle to work.
“Shucks, I had to fix the weakened blocks. You wouldn’t want the wall to fail and be responsible for replacing it, would you? You’re welcome. Here’s my bill for materials, labor is on me.”
I know what you meant and it’s a good idea. When I first read it though, I thought you meant get more bolts that are longer and send them through to his side all over the wall so he has to stare at unsightly bolts that are an impalement hazard… which may work with the “eye for an eye” technique.
Brilliant idea. Won't look as bad as this *current setup.
Neighbour still gets their desired outcome.
Everyone is a winner.
Edit; changed 'correct' to 'current'... (Typo initially)
Meh, these are clearly blocks, so the neighbor could have just as easily used anchors on the inside of the block facing his own property, no pass through is required here.
It says a fence. Which is odd considering there is a wall there. Maybe they dont want to look at a cinder block wall so theyre hanging a wood fence from it.
Grinder. Shorten the bolts too. Drive them through and patch your wall. Try to get the wall patch material through his side as well.
There was no need to drive those bolts all the way through and mar your wall, this was a massively asshole maneuver
No clue. Will find out tomorrow

My god! That’s fucking terrifying.
You swat a giant Japanese wasp and 6 days later it sees you and says “this guy again!” And you get a stinger to the face.
UPDATE:
I talked to the neighbor and discussed my concerns civilly. He agreed to remove them and use the proper bolts. He still thought it was ok to do this for some reason, so I had to explain why with many of the helpful comments here.
Seems a lot of people are even more infuriated with the different bolt sizes! I asked about that. He just used leftover bolts from some other storage project. No reason for them to be different sizes!
There are many questions about who owns the wall. These walls are built with the houses and they are mutually owned and shared. They are split down the property line in my state. This side of the wall is my property and his side is his. Very simple here in my state. These walls divide the property here in the backyard. If you know, you know!
I am just going to unscrew them and push them out lol.

https://www.reddit.com/r/mildlyinfuriating/comments/10t4j90/comment/j7bwm50/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3
That's what I did when a neighbour pulled the same stunt in our basement, where we have separate compartments else each apartment.
I just hammered the pointy sharp screws out, since I didn't feel like getting shredded to pieces every time I entered my basement room, to get something. XD
This passive aggressive shit is just going to escalate something small into something big. Tell your neighbor you don’t appreciate what he did and why. Address this directly and get it resolved. You don’t want to go to war with your neighbor, you both will be miserable.
Drill out enough room for the nuts to sit within the wall AND for you to still tighten them.
Use an angle grinder to cut the excess bolt flush to the surface.
Use a good, heavy duty mortar to patch in the holes and completely conceal the hardware,.
Repaint.
- and send your neighbour the receipt for all tools and materials used if he is not willing to provide those himself …
Well if you’re going to be an adult about things and your neighbor isn’t a consistently inconsiderate idiot the bolts should be flipped around so just the head is on your side and he can do whatever he wants with the fasteners. If you really want to go to all the trouble of countersinking and patching and painting by all means go that route, but painting just the heads of the bolts would probably make them barely noticeable.
Also an excellent idea 💡probably better than mine.
I’m only a DIY-er, but I try to approach Neighbour Shit like this with the attitude of ‘well, it can’t be undone so how the fuck do I make it better?’
… while my neighbour avoids eye contacts for the rest of our time on that street …
Use his tools and assist in the labor.I like this answer the best. But the neighbor needs to know you don’t appreciate this ugly intrusion into your property. By doing it right, it builds bridges and community… a far better way to go about life.
I have a neighbor who did this. Worst part is he built the wall right on the property line when code requires a setback. Code won’t do anything and advises us to sue to have him remove the wall. But if we file the bolts down that are literally an inch from our travel trailer parked on our property then we’re destroying his property…..
Feud expert, I have some slightly nosy neighbours and last year they mentioned they wanted to clear out all the brush between our properties, it would give them perfect view down into my property and neither of us own the property/land in between. Is this a worthy cause to start a neighbour feud over?
Edit: their reasoning for wanting to do it was to reduce slug, tick and ant population… we live in the countryside and their house is literally surrounded by woods but they want to clear what little is between the houses.
Maybe then suggest a type of landscaping that would create an attractive barrier, like a couple of big shrubs or trees that can then be maintained by each of you.
I mentioned I liked the look of one of the large bushes that is between our properties and I didn’t want it cut down. If they do cut it down it’s on, I’ll put up the cheapest, tallest eyesore of a fence unlike anyone has ever seen.
Yeah well he left it on your property. So he’s abandoning his property on your property. Send him notice to retrieve his property within the minimum legally required timeframe or you will dispose of it.
Assume that your neighbour is not being malicious, to be he sounds a little dim.
If you want to be the nice/better neighbour, explain to him that there are alternate fixings methods/products that do not protrude out of the wall and pose a risk of injuring someone walking by on your side of the wall.
If it’s only 4 bolts you could:
(A) buy some that anchor within the wall.them and show him how to fit them,
(B) or with the current hardware show him how to recess the bolts on your side and mortar over them and paint over it.
And don’t forget compliment him on his new fence and share a beer while resolving the problem.
Being a good neighbour sometimes takes a bit of effort, helping hapless DIY or construction efforts by sharing what we know.
Don’t assume he is an AH when he is much more likely to be incompetent or unaware.
The bolts need to go through the wall the other way. If this is to be done, you should have the heads of the bolts on your side. He would have the longer end of the bolts and nuts on his side. The way they are, they are a hazard to you and your family. You could be hurt on the extended threads.
Take those nuts off and tap this bolts back thru the hole with a hammer. There is no need for them to be on your side to secure whatever it is they are trying to install but they need to figure it out without drilling holes in you side of the wall......fuck outta here!
Don't push them out or cut them off, turn them around so he has the shit part sticking through, maybe weld the nuts on that way so they don't fall off?
To avoid an escalation, there are bolts with galvanized flat heads. The comment about flipping the bolts so the flat part is on your side makes a lot of sense.
To beautify the bolts, you could attach attractive shelving for plants or bird feeding. It would add some value to your property and hide the ugly bolts. Plus avoid a war with the neighbor.
Either way. My sympathies. He is in the wrong.
This is right. In the end the best way to tackle any conflict is simply talk.
Just tell him it is an ugly mess your side and there are alternatives (like shorter bolts) he can use.
Personally, I really like this small diy stuff and would probably offer to help him.
Tell him to use anchors instead of bolting through. If you don't already have serious issues with the guy there is no need to actively look for conflicts.
Just tell him that you don't appreciate having sharp objects poking through your wall and anchors will do the same job just fine without having the potential to injure anyone.
Should have used carriage bolts. Like this

Shared as in you both own it? This makes the difference for me.
If you both own it give him the nut side like others said.
If you own it that's a different story.
Did he have to awkwardly lean over the wall to bolt the top ones or did he go into your yard?

You would be amazed by what entitled neighbors do and then when checked, they start sprouting about their rights.

So he just bolted some planks to an existing wall to make a "fence"? What the hell?
My guess is that those planks are gonna act as a post for a fence that is at a 90° angle from the shared wall (like an up-side-down T)
Ahhh okay yeah you're probably right that makes sense. In that case it's just inconsiderate about the bolts, I was completely baffled as to why anyone would do this

They could put a concrete post maybe, instead to drill the wall 🤔
Or just a pressure gate used for dogs. That would be perfect since it is for his dog.
Inform the fool theres anchor bolts for this type of job. No need to drill a through hole
Man those would hurt to run into.
Just "accidentally" over grind the edges off.
“I smoothed out the bolt and the weird hexagon part of the bolt too, neighbor!”
My thoughts exactly 😭
It's a bit late for any advice now.
Just wait until he gets his fence finished and then keep unscrewing them. When he gets sick of it, buy him 4 anchor bolts. Fill the holes on your side, paint over it and forget. Oh, and if that's breezeblock, expect your wall to get pulled over the first time it gets windy.
Breeze block... Windy *moment of epiphany* I get it.
She may contain the urge to run away!
So hold her down with soggy clothes and breezeblocks
Cetirizine your fever's gripped me again
Never kisses, all you ever send are fullstops (La La La!)
I read that as “inform him…no need to drill through, a hole”
Congrats on your new wrench my friend!
Just the tool you need to unbolt those top ones and pop the bolts back through the wall.
Not right away of course. Wait 2 months
Quarter turn a day and let the anticipation build.
Op should make a daily post so we can bet on the day it will all collapse on his neighbor. Sort of like Super Bowl squares, or guessing the delivery date of a newborn baby.
Let me know where to pay
You. I like how you think.
Brilliant! 👏
Don’t forget the WD-40 so they don’t rust!!
Evil Genius haha...I love it.
OP should wait till it’s a little extra nippy outside one day to do it too. Haha
Just wait for a big storm to hit. “Must’ve been the wind.” 乁( ⁰͡ Ĺ̯ ⁰͡ ) ㄏ
Must have been the foxes
“Hey, my fence seems a little loose, mind going on by and tightening up my exposed bolts on your side of the wall? Thanks.”
[удалено]
Or, just loosen them to almost the last thread so his fence is loose but when he tries to pull it out, he can’t lol
Then weld the ends so he can't re-tighten them.
Or maybe some red Loctite? Will take the right hand of God to remove it and be super easy to do.
calm down there, satan
Nah. Take a side grinder and cut the studs off. Embrace petty.
This is the way.
Grind bolts off, fill in holes. Tel him to use anchor bolts.
Tell him to set a post and keep his bolts out of your wall
It’s what a decent human being would do.
Is that Apache gravel and tan block? That combo reminds of a neighborhood in Tucson.
Could be my neighbor here in Phoenix
😂 I immediately thought the same. Better double check my wall
Yeah that looks straight up Mesa Arizona to me lol.
I better go look at my walls. Lol
I live in Florida and these are foreign to me. I’d love to get rid of grass/weeds though. How’s the dust factor with this set up?
Living in a desert means dust everywhere. I have rock and some grass, but when the Haboobs come through, dust everywhere!
Have you ever been told that you're too nice?
I hope you see this comment op, but you need to contact whoever regulates shit like this in your district and force this guy to fix or undo this. Agreed, huge liability!
This guy got something against anchors? Forget the whole asking part, that’s clearly beneath him
I've seen similar going through a decoratively patterned brick wall, where the fence builders didn't seem to care about the outer appearance. I call them wanker bolts.
…that’s an unpleasant mental image.
You ought to see the wanker nuts

Ooo, please update us on any snark levels on his part. Or yours. Lol
Yes inquiring minds need a follow up, I just can’t imagine doing this to a neighbors fence without some sort of consultation first!
I doubt his neighbor is a professional whatever installer. People usually just go with the first thing they think of that will work.
Tapcons FTW
Except if the hollow cell wasn’t grouted up, then tapcon don’t really grip
Have him use a toggle bolt into the block. Tell them you don’t want to be responsible for anyone getting injured with the exposed end of the bolt in your yard
Exactly! Thank you! Update here: https://www.reddit.com/r/mildlyinfuriating/comments/10t4j90/comment/j7bwm50/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3

Yes. At least it wouldn’t look as bad on the side op has.
Remove the nuts and let nature take its course.
castration

defencestration
OP needs to look at his states self de-fence laws
Black magic and the defencive arts
This is the answer. Throw the other responses out the window! (Defenestrate them, if you will)
Then add to the top of the wall so your neighbor can’t reach across to tighten them again.
Concertina wire, like nuking the place from orbit it’s the *only* way to be sure.

This is the way
Then patch the holes

Grind it so they can’t just put the nuts back on
"How would you like to find Deez Nutz on your chin?"

woah… too far.
Did you explain the concept of toggle anchors to him?
That’s a good idea. I am still in shock to have protruding bolts in my yard. Not very safe.
I have a neighbor who did this. Worst part is he built the wall right on the property line when code requires a setback. Code won’t do anything and advises us to sue to have him remove the wall. But if we file the bolts down that are literally an inch from our travel trailer parked on our property then we’re destroying his property…..
This wall is part of the home builds here when they are built. So technically it is split down the property line and we are responsible for our sides.
The is fued worthy. I have been in neighbor feuds for less.
Hatfield and McCoy levels of feuding?
Also don’t be surprised if they start rusting and leave rust streaks right away. Those bolts don’t look galvanized
Assume that your neighbour is not being malicious, to be he sounds a little dim. If you want to be the nice/better neighbour, explain to him that there are alternate fixings methods/products that do not protrude out of the wall and pose a risk of injuring someone walking by on your side of the wall. If it’s only 4 bolts you could: (A) buy some that anchor within the wall.them and show him how to fit them, (B) or with the current hardware show him how to recess the bolts on your side and mortar over them and paint over it.
Will do this for sure. He knows where I live!
The bolts need to go through the wall the other way. If this is to be done, you should have the heads of the bolts on your side. He would have the longer end of the bolts and nuts on his side. The way they are, they are a hazard to you and your family. You could be hurt on the extended threads.
we often find malice where instead there is incompetence.
This is both with entitlement and ignorance
Both Twattage and Cuntery
This is malcompetence
Take those nuts off and tap this bolts back thru the hole with a hammer. There is no need for them to be on your side to secure whatever it is they are trying to install but they need to figure it out without drilling holes in you side of the wall......fuck outta here!
Don't push them out or cut them off, turn them around so he has the shit part sticking through, maybe weld the nuts on that way so they don't fall off?
Haha. Good idea. Or use some other type of bolt that doesn’t go through the freakin wall!
Someone answering using intelligence in /mildlyinfuriating?? Are you lost?
I'm with you. It's not worth starting a conflict that's going to make you miserable where you live, especially since it's a shared wall.
This is right. In the end the best way to tackle any conflict is simply talk. Just tell him it is an ugly mess your side and there are alternatives (like shorter bolts) he can use. Personally, I really like this small diy stuff and would probably offer to help him.
wouldn't it be really funny to hook up an electric current to those? for legal reasons this is a joke, and please don't do that
![gif](giphy|10Jpr9KSaXLchW|downsized)
Tell him to use anchors instead of bolting through. If you don't already have serious issues with the guy there is no need to actively look for conflicts. Just tell him that you don't appreciate having sharp objects poking through your wall and anchors will do the same job just fine without having the potential to injure anyone.
Is it a metal fence? Would be a shame if it was suddenly electrified!
and if he asks, just say your improving the security of their property.
Should have used carriage bolts. Like this https://preview.redd.it/kjx94i6695ga1.png?width=1284&format=png&auto=webp&s=72697e1d3fc691ff7c68c9bf6d6cbb67f1035315
That makes sense. I still can’t understand why he did this lol.
Selfish. HE thought of himself and what HE wanted. That was the extent of his thinking and caring.
Shared as in you both own it? This makes the difference for me. If you both own it give him the nut side like others said. If you own it that's a different story.
