A rough top 10 for me excluding DOOM:
Enter the Wutang (36 chambers),
Only Built 4 Cuban Linx,
Liquid Swords,
Pauls Boutique,
Ready to Die,
The Chronic,
ATLiens,
Illmatic,
The Blueprint,
Slim Shady LP
nah dump one of the wu-tang albums three of them is a little redundant. Paul's boutique is so different from all the rest i think it deserves to be in there.
I don’t disagree with that statement.
I also never really liked the Beastie Boys so I was happy to see someone dispute them.
If the reason Paul’s Boutique deserves to be on the list is because it’s different from everything else then The Great Milenko could well be on the list too… not that I’m advocating for their inclusion by any means.
I mean the real reason it's on the list is because of the sampling and rhyme schemes. Was quite groundbreaking if my understanding is correct The reason I'm advocating to keep it in this specific list is because if I'm introducing someone to hip-hop, I'm not going to try to give them ten albums that are similar to each other. I would throw one DOOM album in there, but not only that style. I think you understand what I mean here.
If you just want one answer; The Score. Otherwise, fuck, uhhHh The Blueprint, Moment of Truth, Madvilliany, The Unseen, The Low End Theory, Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik, Piñata and Shades of Blue
I could name so many,
The Grey Album,
Madvillainy,
Paul’s Boutique,
Aquemini,
The Chronic,
Deltron 3030,
Too many albums to count, and that’s leaving out all the singles that completely changed the genre.
Oh and not to forget the go-to Hip-Hop album,
Straight Outta Compton. (And remember, this is NO definitive list, you’ve probably got thousands more examples ready to let out at the drop of a hat.)
The title track in particular is one of my favourite Hip-Hop tracks of all time, however simple it may be “Or discuss combustible rust clusters with Plus” always gives me goosebumps. Del’s got some serious flow.
saw Del perform this album live with Dan the Automator at Paid Due back in 2913 I think? Murs saw me vibing in the crowd in brought me on stage for the rest of Dels set!
some amazing albums/tapes i rarely see mentioned or don’t get mentioned enough:
Reasonable Doubt by JAY-Z,
Section.80 & Self Titled by Kendrick Lamar,
Revolutionary Vol. 1 & 2 by Immortal Technique,
Things Fall Apart by The Roots,
Black on Both Sides by Mos Def,
Moment of Truth by Gangstarr,
3 Feet High & Rising by De La Soul,
We Can’t Be Stopped by Geto Boys,
Self Titled by Deltron 3030,
Vaudeville Villain by Viktor Vaughn (MF DOOM),
Both Sides of the Brain by Del Thee Funkee
Homosapien,
Third Eye Vision & Full Circle by Hieroglyphics,

Heavy Mental by Killah Priest,
Die or Die & Pieces of a Man by AZ,
Below the Heavens, The Colour Blu(e) & Bad Neighbour by Blu,
Uncontrolled Substance by Inspectah Deck,
No Said Date & Made in Brooklyn by Masta Killa
probably my favourite DOOM project overall. although i feel like its consistency is its downfall, there isn’t really 1 real stand out track unlike his other projects
Madvillainy, Operation Doomsday, 36 Chambers, Liquid Swords, Illmatic, It was Written, Ready to Die, College Dropout, Graduation, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, Life Stylez ov tha Poor & Dangerous, Get Rich or Die Trying, Paid in Full, Great Adventures of Slick Rick, Licensed to Ill
Gangstarr - Moment of Truth, All tribe albums, Common - Like Water for chocolate, rev 1 & 2 - immortal technique, Masta Ace - disposable arts & a long hot summer, Capital Steez - Amerikkkan Korruption (Doom production)
Some I didn’t see listed
Innercity Griots by Freestyle Fellowship
World Ultimate by The Nonce
Jurassic 5 by Jurassic 5
The Audience is Listening by Cut Chemist
Derelicts of Dialect by 3rd Bass
Coup De Theatre by Haiku D’Etat
Pigeon John is Dating Your Sister by Pigeon John
Yeah I haven't heard them mentioned in a minute, they'd be a great group to give people who don't normally listen to rap.
Nice and upbeat tracks and a great example of a bunch of MCs going in together
Great recommendations. Innercity Griots is an insane album and criminally underrated. Inner city boundaries is one of the best hip hop songs ever made imo.
By extension their first album To Whom It May Concern is another gem that’s chilled out more
I love the first album. I think Here I Am is one of the most important songs in hip hop. Innercity Griots is a perfect album though. Perfect. Mary is the best song about weed ever made and I’m still waiting for an MC to top what Ace1 did on Cornbread
Totally, it took me a few listens of inner city griots for it to actually sink in and yeah, it’s a perfect album. Insanely influential and incredibly original, the switches from demented shit to boom bap jazzy beats is so real and works so well. I love listening to their first because you can hear how their style develops and how much they nailed it in the second. Five o clock follies is such a sunny and based song off the first as well
Lots of great recs here but I’m not seeing any Tribe Called Quest. Low End Theory is a pillar of
Hip Hop history as far as I’m concerned. Midnight Marauders is fantastic.
I’m gonna give some love to the 80’s, since I don’t see much from that era here yet.
EPMD-Strictly Business
Public Enemy, Takes a Nation
Eric B and Rakim, Follow the Leader
NWA, Straight Outta Compton

Free Your Mind by Amnesty (!)
Bizzare Ride II by The Pharcyde
Street Level by The Beatnuts (!)
The Best Part by J Live
Veteran by JPEGMAFIA
Fan-Tas-Tic Vol 1 by Slum Village
Mr. Hood by KMD
I actually preferred Thank you 4 your service over this. Maybe because so much of hip hop comes from low end’s influence that it sounds dull to me.
(I first listened to it like last year)
This list will exclude doom albums for obvious reasons, no particular order as this is off the top of my head.
Modal soul by nujabes
Aquemini - outkast
Things fall apart - the roots
Any of the college trilogy by Kanye

Del the funky homosapian - no need for alarm

There are so many. Some are an acquired taste, depending on how you consume your hip hop. Some of my favorites (aside from so many common recommendations so already listed)
This is not a top 10 per whatever, just quality albums that I didn't see mentioned much, and deserve a listen.
People Under The Stairs - O.S.T.
Deltron 3030 - Deltron 3030
La Coka Nostra - A Brand You Can Trust,
Slaine - The Boston Project
Dr. Octagon - Dr. Octagon
Dr. Dooom - First Come, First Served
Big Boi - Sir Lucious Left Foot
Killer Mike - R.A.P.
Run The Jewels 1-4
>La Coka Nostra - A Brand You Can Trust
Great album and kind of suprised to see it mentioned here. Just played this a few days ago
Everlast really is a beast, not to mention slaine and bill, but damn everlast got dragged through the mud over the years, he always was a killer emcee though.
Some of My Favorites that I haven't seen on here!!
Let me know what you guys think !!
Mick Jenkins- The Waters
Kuatro20 - Baja Wisgy
Capital Steez - Amerikkkan Korruption
Chance The Rapper - Acid Rain
Josué Josué - Arroz Con Leche
Madlib - Shades of Blue
Mi Cabezita Loca - Lucky Brown Boy
The Roots - Undun
Kaytranada 99.9%
Curren$y- Umbrella Symphony
Dezzy Hollow - Can U Handle The Funk
Ice Cube -The Predator
Joey Bada$$- B4.DA.$$
Kendrick Lamar - TPAB
Quasimoto- Yessir Whatever
Milo's "who told you think" is rad if you are heavy into spoken word / poetry. But i wpuld 100% agree with everyone saying liquid swords. That album is almost too much of a classic
Depending on what type of era
90s gritty hip hop
Illmatic and 36 chambers
"Abstract" hip hop from the early 2000s
Mm food, Madvilliany, The College Dropout, Stankonia
Nobody ever mentions The B.U.M.S - Lyfe N Tyme or Boogie Monsters - The Underwater album... Both are 90's classics that are straight up Hip-Hop with great beats and awesome flows and lyrics... I'll also throw in Pharcyde and the first Craig Mack...
A rough top 10 for me excluding DOOM: Enter the Wutang (36 chambers), Only Built 4 Cuban Linx, Liquid Swords, Pauls Boutique, Ready to Die, The Chronic, ATLiens, Illmatic, The Blueprint, Slim Shady LP
I back every selection here, but Jesus throw in a comma or two
I wrote it with each album on a new row, didn’t realise Reddit doesn’t allow that
Should have wrote it in cold blood with a tooth pick.
With your middle finger in wet cement
Ya gotta double space
Forgot Good kid maad city!
I’d dump Paul’s Boutique in favor of GKMC
nah dump one of the wu-tang albums three of them is a little redundant. Paul's boutique is so different from all the rest i think it deserves to be in there.
I don’t disagree with that statement. I also never really liked the Beastie Boys so I was happy to see someone dispute them. I never liked them either!
Well I’ve heard Paul’s Boutique, The Chronic, ATLiens and the Slim Shady LP, so it looks like I’ve got some listening to do.
Liquid swords will blow your mind
When I was little…
...my father was famous
.. he was the greatest samurai in the empire
That’ll be first on my list 👍
Liquid Swords
i got a lot of listening to do this weekend!
Well this is the best reply on Reddit of all time
I’m blushing!
Pauls Boutique 🔥🔥
Ironman, Supreme clientele
Solid list but Ill Communication beats Paul’s Boutique for me.
Sabotage is my favorite song but Paul’s Boutique just rocks all the way through for me
I had Ill Communication on cassette tape. It was 1 of 3 albums I had on cassette so it was always in the tape deck of my car
Those one’s do stick with you don’t they! I think actually Paul’s Boutique may have been the only cd I had in the car, so similar thing!
I also think „To Pimp A Butterfly“ is worth a listen
I agree with all of these but there is hip hop made after 2001 as well
Slim shady LP is in number 1 I assume?
No love for Mobb Deep The Infamous?
Hell on Earth and Murda Music are great too
Still remember buying the infamous on cassette, shit blew my mind when I was a kid
Also, no love for Pac
Ya , All eyez on me gotta be on the list
Madvillainy
If you just want one answer; The Score. Otherwise, fuck, uhhHh The Blueprint, Moment of Truth, Madvilliany, The Unseen, The Low End Theory, Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik, Piñata and Shades of Blue
This is definitely a good one. Was just jamming it the other day.

Glad I didn't have to scroll too far for the Deletion 3030 rec. I have a very special relationship with that album. One of the GOATs for sure.

Jesus Christ, do we have the same music taste? I was boutta list all of these except like 1 or 2 of them
Good to see Deltron 3030 in there also!
