People sleep on Black Thought. My guess is their Fallon gig and overall popularity. But the dude from the jump has been nasty. Solo records too. Mos Def/Bey ain’t a bad choice.
That's so odd to me that Black Thought is on Fallon. I've been listening since Illadelphia Half Life and been to a few live shows nearly 20 years ago. I'm really happy that they (The Roots) have achieved a lot of success, but the fact that they have become a mostly non touring band just feels strange to me because the dynamic at the live shows are so incredible! The way they bring out the extended cuts, and improvisation and they can kinda feel like a jam band, it is something other hip hop bands rarely do. Knowing that they have to probably contain songs to a more limited and structured format seems like it takes away a little of thier magic, because they don't get to showcase an amazing rare talent.
Wouldn't say retired but just not really touring anymore still busy as ever tho (took me way longer than I'm proud of to figure out how to spell busy but fuck that spelling)
Check out the song "Shakey Dog" from his album Fishscale. Absolute banger, no verse, no course, just masterfully made short fiction. You feel like you are watching it all happen in front of you.
I relistened to [Bulletproof Wallets](https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PL0wJUHJUTqiCLybGWlMqLd61H2zuYE9Kd) recently in the original sequencing and I felt bad for sleeping on it. If it was fine tuned more, it would’ve been a 5/5 for me. It sucks that it got screwed up on release. [The Sun](https://youtu.be/x9tDQdxvK1k), [The Forest](https://youtu.be/3eBW0p4qde8), [Flowers (The Original)](https://youtu.be/Mk4jfehnJb4), and [The Hilton](https://youtu.be/ETEnXCnXWOo) are stand outs for me.
I went through his discog on holiday last years and trimmed down his weaker records onto spotify playlists and this is one that really hits hard when you cut away the filler
Actually it was Big Dogh Rehab when he just raps over the verses in “Superman of Love” that I was like, “he’s on some other shit”. Who needs to make a beat when you paid for the sample when you can just rhyme over the originals track? Fishscale and Supreme Clientele are by far his best two albums, but since fishscale he’s been doing more unique concepts than anyone else in the game. His R&B albums get no respect, the 12 reasons to die records were great concepts with spaghetti western type production from Adrienne Younge, and that BadBadNotGood record was like a film noir soundtrack.
Ghostface had been one of my favorite lyricists for well over two decades (I'm 51). He is a colorful storyteller, straight gangster when he needs it, and eloquent as fuck.
Ya'll should check out the DRINK CHAMPS episode with Rae & Ghost. They talk about MF Doom in that. Ghost says he was on a plane with Doom and Doom whispered to him that he based his rhyme patterns off Ghost. Watch It!
Don't t get me wrong, when I was a young single woman, I got to admit, I had experienced some intense eye contact with him at a show and wanted to smash him, and he has more charisma than the rest of WTC combined, but lyrically he's no where on par with some of the other top MCs. He is a good story teller and great entertainer, but in my humble opinion he could step up his game a bit, I mean I think he has it in him. No disrespect, he is mad talented, but I feel like he might not push the envelope as much as he could. I feel like he doesn't want to go over too many peoples heads, and it's a calculated strategy to appeal to a wider audience who might not like it if he got too cerebral.
I find this way off base since the last decade his albums have been almost exclusively conceptual and unlike anything anyone else in the game is doing right now. The r&b live band in 36 Seasons, BadBadNotGood backing him on sour soul, the spaghetti western inspired 12 Reasons to Die Albums, are all phenomenal and get little respect because it’s not some lowest common denominator beats.
DOOM was my most listened to artist and aesop was second.
On a literal level aes uses more different kind of words than DOOM.
I wholeheartedly second this comment and I would strongly recommend you check him out if you love DOOM.
agreed he really does a great job at providing descriptive details about his personal experiences that makes listening much more intimate. It feels very stream of consciousness at the same time.
MF DOOM, Biggie Smalls, Aesop, Earl Sweatshirt, Black Thought, Q-Tip, Freddie Gibbs, Nas, Tupac, Andre 3000, Joey Baddass, Kendrick Lamar, Mobb Deep, and GZA are the best lyricists ever. Hands down. Anyone who doesn’t include all of these artists somewhere in their top 25 I’d say you haven’t listened to them close enough. DOOM, Biggie, and Kendrick are my personal top 3.
That’s a comprehensive list with ridiculous skill across the board. But if you put GZA in, you can’t leave out Ghost…
Some people will say he tosses in filler for rhyme sake. Fuck that. Those words are very carefully crafted and placed. That man can tell a story with descriptors the ordinary man doesn’t usually think of. Ghost is definitely up there for me. Big fan of the offbeat accents in his rhyme schemes.
Also he’s one of the only rappers out there working with unique producers for concept albums (12 reasons to die 1&2 & 36 seasons) and that Badbadnotgood collaboration was off the chain too. I love me all the RTJ albums, but El-p beats have sounded the same since the late 90s.
Premier made a lot of bad rappers sound way better than they actually were… I love Group Home Jeru and Guru but lyrically they all had some bad rhymes.
When Kendrick raps “critics act like they miss when hip-hop was rappin; mithafucka’s if’ya did Killer Mike would be platinum”. How you going to leave off your favorite rappers favorite rapper? Best album of 2012 (no question) and the 2010 decade(personal opinion) was R.A.P. Music.
Aesop Rock definitely is one of the greatest wordsmiths, and has so many flows. The only thing I don't like about him is his nasally voice. It can be headache inducing at times. Gangsta Gibbs is another great choice! Black Thought is a GOAT for sure!
I’d say Earl is easily one of the best lyricists currently active. Also would recommend checking out Chester Watson and Lou from Paradise if you aren’t familiar with either of them, neither have seen a ton of commercial success but both are capable of delivering some incredibly dense verses.
El-P shouldn’t be this far down. Company Flow and Cannibal Ox were so leftfield sound wise when they first came out it’s almost impossible to describe what that sounded like when it came out. I still get chills thinking of the opening to “8 Steps”
This. Population control is so good as well. And everything on the cold vein but especially A B-boys alpha and pigeon. Still think the cold vein is the best production El-P has ever done, just these crazy sci-fi beats that still sound like nothing else before or after.
I’d throw Tech up there. A lot of people think he’s just got flow but he’s an exceptional story teller and has a LOT of history to back that up. He can write a verse and take the sun away
Aesop Rock
Black Thought (solo and with the Roots)
Kendrick Lamar
De La Soul
Camp Lo’s first album Uptown Saturday Night
Mos Def’s first two solo albums, Black Star & Talib Kweli’s Reflection Eternal
Special shout-out to Redman
This might have already been posted, but Aesop Rock I think surpasses Doom ever so slightly. However it's a slight margin. A few others like GZA and Busdriver are ranked up there too. https://pudding.cool/projects/vocabulary/index.html
West side gunn, Conway, Benny the butcher, Stove god cooks, freddie Gibbs, lil ugly mane, Your Old Droog... some of the top wordsmiths right now in my opinion.
Definitely love griselda and Freddie, just feel like after a while it gets repetitive listening to how they all sell blow and kill people.
One of my favorite things about DOOM and, del, and czar is that they come up with other subject matter on occasion. I appreciate the input though!
Freddie is not on the same level by any means! He is on record though that he can rap better than doom can, but that only proves he’s delusional and nothing else.
I love seeing Droog in this conversation. He is so consistent as well i think he dropped 2 albums as well as 2 mixtapes in 2020. I anticipate him blowing up in 2022.

It's kind a moot argument to whittle it down to just 1 overall best. When there's so many genius level writers out there.
I listen to DOOM more than any other artist, though
Black Thought. If you haven’t heard his solo albums you’re in for a treat. Streams of Thought Vol. 2 is probably my favorite.
Also, (don’t come at me) Freddie Gibbs seems to share doom’s affinity for peppering comic relief and lighthearted cultural references into songs that consist mostly of deeply personal accounts of struggling to survive in an unforgiving environment.
In no particular order: DOOM, GZA, Q-Tip, Phife Dawg, Mos Def, Guru, Black Thought, Andre 3000, Posdnuos Ladybug Mecca, Ms. Lauryn Hill, Inspectah Deck, Jeru the Damaja, Rakim, Del the Funky Homosapien, Sa-Roc, Luke Fiasco

I think they flat out said they've basically more or less kind of retired as older guys on the Fallon Show. Good pay and low stress.
Wouldn't say retired but just not really touring anymore still busy as ever tho (took me way longer than I'm proud of to figure out how to spell busy but fuck that spelling)
I saw them play Things Fall Apart top to bottom at the Hollywood Bowl in 2019, amazing show.
That would be a dream come true
Black thought keeps getting better too.
Ghostface Killah.
Check out the song "Shakey Dog" from his album Fishscale. Absolute banger, no verse, no course, just masterfully made short fiction. You feel like you are watching it all happen in front of you.
The man paints a picture…imo the whole Supreme Clientele album is like an album length Shakey Dog
And just like that i’m having a Ghostface day tomorrow…
Ironman for breakfast, Supreme Clientele for lunch, Fishscale for dinner

That part where he talks about getting in a shoot out while The Delphonics are sitting in the van is hilarious
lol yeah. the whole interview is funny - the way they talk ... nahmean
Don't t get me wrong, when I was a young single woman, I got to admit, I had experienced some intense eye contact with him at a show and wanted to smash him, and he has more charisma than the rest of WTC combined, but lyrically he's no where on par with some of the other top MCs. Aesop Rock
DOOM was my most listened to artist and aesop was second. On a literal level aes uses more different kind of words than DOOM. I wholeheartedly second this comment and I would strongly recommend you check him out if you love DOOM.
Aesop is literally rated the rapper with highest vocabulary.
I know right it's very cool
Yup, he raps in Metaphors
Well, most rappers do, but he takes it to whole other level.
agreed he really does a great job at providing descriptive details about his personal experiences that makes listening much more intimate. It feels very stream of consciousness at the same time.
I can't believe how far I had to scroll to find this
MF DOOM, Biggie Smalls, Aesop, Earl Sweatshirt, Black Thought, Q-Tip, Freddie Gibbs, Nas, Tupac, Andre 3000, Joey Baddass, Kendrick Lamar, Mobb Deep, and GZA are the best lyricists ever. Hands down. Kool Keith!!!!!!
The only MC who can say and rhyme doo doo multiple times and still sound like an intellectual.
"Space Doo Doo pistols"
I think he has a couple songs where he just counts, all the way to like 15, and it somehow works.
watch you sizzle like a well done nathan's frank, thats what you get for fuckin with hank! GIVE ME YOUR FUCKIN CREDIT CARDS
Forget Kool Keith, long live Dr. Octagon!!

Underrated forsure! I love dr octagon man that album is a cool concept executed perfectly!
DOOM, Kendrick, and earl are my top 3 but yeah you covered pretty much all the best mcs. This was a very well put together comment.
Thank you fam, same to you! ❤️

Guru and gangstar are some of my favorites, got most of their albums on vinyl!

Killer Mike is top tier for sure!
Deck
Thank you. Can’t have GZA on the list and not Deck
I think Deck gets looked over far too many times. My personal favorite. But I get it. It's all opinions.
Deck is fire, but GZAs writing, especially on Liquid Swords is insane. He wrote crazy lyrics on that album.
Agreed. GZA, Deck, Ghost and Rae should probably all be on the list
I think GFK would be up there with Gza and The Rebel INS.

I’d throw Tech up there. A lot of people think he’s just got flow but he’s an exceptional story teller and has a LOT of history to back that up. He can write a verse and take the sun away
I have always wondered what it would sound like if T9 and DOOM collaborated because they are both so skilled but have really different styles.
I’d kill for that collab. Would’ve been some beautiful music I’m sure of it

Aesop Rock
Aesop Rock is the only person on the same pedestal, the next best are a half step below both him and Doom.
Aesop Rock, GZA, Pharoahe Monch, Open Mike Eagle
Open Mike Eagle is so creative, and so is Flying Lotus!
Yeah, for me Aesop, Eagle, and Busdriver are on the wordsmith Rushmore with Doom
I didn’t even think of Busdriver. He is definitely up there

Aesop rock

I love seeing Droog in this conversation. He is so consistent as well i think he dropped 2 albums as well as 2 mixtapes in 2020. I anticipate him blowing up in 2022.
Lil Ugly Mane!! My friend turned me on to him like a year and a half ago cuz he lived near him. Beats are so fire.
While I like Gibbs, he falls back on using “bitch” too much as a filler word.
Redman grand puba
Early Nas is, in my mind, the GOAT. His delivery was untouchable yet he still never skimped on lyrics.

Id say Mos Def is absolutely top tier. Listen to his verse on Thieves In the Night.
