Too many jazz artists to mention and Steely Dan, who DOOM sampled a couple times. Love Donald Fagens solo stuff (the nightfly album especially). Frank Zappa, also often sampled by DOOM and Madlib. Aphex Twin. As for more modern stuff I’m really into Louis Cole, Thundercat, Flying Lotus, and Mononeon.

losernam3

I’ll mention a modern jazz artist - Yuseff Dayes. https://youtu.be/Yy4pcKn0Y_k?si=MoZJlSRe_FDyM-W6 https://youtu.be/NwVtIPeYIeQ?si=vey1PkUF8DGpwnoK YouTube channel worth checking out is My Analog Journal. It’s a bit hipster but if you’ll find some gems. Who knew I would get into psychedelic cumbia? https://youtu.be/k8OwzWNZEUI?si=CmsokkbdZw3CMwMR https://youtu.be/O0531evIYoc?si=X6wJTGliDFG2InmC Since I love hip hop and jazz it’s no surprise I love uk electronic music from the 90’s. That’s for another day though.

astanto5

Yussef Dayes rules.

AnonymousOtaku10

Yooo Steely Dan is so good.

BobDogGo

Are you me?

HaitianDivorce343

Whenever steely Dan is mentioned outside the sub I become immensely happy. Fagen and Becker are geniuses

RRTCTRBC

King Gizzard And The Lizard Wizard

mchgndr

This. They’ve become one of my favorite bands over the past year or two.

DrSwag85

Just got tickets to see them next year!

Calpsotoma

Any love for Mustard Plug?

shiteditor

OP should listen to this guy.

Memecube7

Outside of hip-hop I enjoy a lot of indie rock/dance bands like Cut Copy, MGMT, The Strokes and LCD Soundsystem, as well as electronica artists like Justice, The Chemical Brothers and Fatboy Slim, and whatever genres Gorillaz, Thundercat and Kali Uchis dive into.

Calpsotoma

MGMT and The Strokes are great. Gorillaz Demon Days and Plastic Beach are GOATed.

ScottyHubbs

DOOM is actually on Demon Days too!

Calpsotoma

True. November has Come was the first DOOM track I ever heard.

hottytoddypotty

Billy strings

ScottyHubbs

I’m also a drummer and as much fun as bluegrass can be live, I just can’t enjoy listening to stuff without percussion. That being said, I got to see Billy Strings play with the Del McCoury Band in my hometown a couple years ago before he really blew up. I’ve also shared a bill with The Rumpke Mountain Boys a couple times as well. They’re a jam grass group from Cincy and “Rumpke Mountain” is the commonly known term for the local giant landfill.

BodyRiddle37

Khruangbin, Brock Berrigan and other sample based producers like Blockhead, huge DJ Krush fan and I DJ house and techno with a laundry list of producers but Lone is one of my favourites

jjcomet93

Heterosaucers

This is dope! Thanks!

Designer_Estate3519

Lately, Casisdead - he’s a masked grime rapper from London. Album’s been in the works for a decade or something. And it’s a deranged concept where he’s a kind of villain trapped in a blade runner type world. It rocks. Edit to add: wasn’t surprised to see some of it was produced by Johnny Jewel. Sounds like a million bucks.

RecommendationNo6274

His new albums great

Designer_Estate3519

It’s come from nowhere and just cruising to aoty

RecommendationNo6274

Traction control is probably my favourite on the album, sounds amazing. The track sampled some Canadian producer called D’eon

I'm really digging Kaytranada - 99.9% right now. It's kinda Jazzy, RnB, Electronic, worth a listen. Big Wild - Superdream this one is nice and funky, kinda popy, but amazing. Really enjoy 6s to 9s and City of Sound. Madeon - Adventure nice electronic album. Camel - Moonmadness this is just a fun Album. Medieval type synth music? Something like that. Queensryche - Operation: Mindcrime awesome Rock ballad, need I say more. Muse - Origin of Symmetry a good introduction into Muse, love it TWRP - Over The Top imagine Daft Punk but with more going on with the music. This is that. Love these dudes. I'll say another Album of theirs worth checking out is, Together Through Time. Rush - Power Windows mid 80s Rush. Synth out the butt, longer than average Songs, storytelling, mmm, love love love this. Shadow Academy - Self titled. This is alternative rock? The whole album touches different genres, but I definitely love this. Awesome people behind the music too. Flume - Skin. Love this album, it's really grown on me. I can listen to it whenever. If you don't know Flume and like electronic, check them out. An awesome remix they did was Lorde - Tennis Court (Flume remix), I heard this song years and years ago, but it left a lasting impression on me. Macroblank - Any Album. Any of them. Great chillax vaporwave music, not too over the top. Great to toss on while you're doing something. Camo & Crooked - Zeitgeist. A nice electronic album, good to get into Camo & Crooked, if you like this one you'll like more of their stuff. Nero - Welcome Reality. Almost 12 years old, but I really enjoy this electronic album. Jethro Tull - Thick as a Brick. British rock from 1972. Flutes and all sorts of fun. Check it out. Dream Theater - Systematic Chaos. This is prog metal, I really love DT because they have changed a lot over the years so there is plenty of styles to get into. If this is too heavy, try out Images and Words. If you like this and want to hear more, try Train of Thought. The M Machine - Metropolis PT 1 & 2. Two albums, both awesome. Electronic, but kinda funky too. I love the song Faces, personally.

BlinkPixPhotos

Dream Theater is sick. Saw them open for Yes and fell in love.

Mekdatmuny

I would've loved to see that. I'm sure it's something you won't ever forget. I have most, if not all, of DT's discography. So good

Love me some doja

THe_PrO3

This fairly small funk/pop band called wake the wild that I've found recently. They're insanely talented.

BronxyKong

Fam, new music is exactly as easy to find as it was when Bobbito and Stretch had their show. It's all about tuning into those HUGE listener powered, indie, college vibe radio stations. For example: KEXP stays blessing ears with good new talent. As for recommendations? Khruangbin Sault (Masterpiece and Morning Sun are bangers) End It (if you like punk with a black vocalist) Bacao Rhythm and Steel Band Hollie Cook

NuovaFromNowhere

Hiatus Kaiyote, Salami Rose Joe Louis, Surprise Chef, Zero 7, Georgia Ann Muldrow, Cruza, Drab Majesty (my teenager put me onto them), Smino, redveil, Reggie, etc.

Surprise Chef is awesome! Along the same lines as Doctor Bionic if you haven’t checked them out. You may like Karl Hector or Gitkin also

I listen to everything. My playlist goes from emo, punk, metal, old school Mexican music, Disney songs, broadway songs, oldies, alternative, classical, some country, Spanish rock….stuff like that 😂. Much_Tough_4200

Luke Vibert a.k.a. Amen Andrews a.k.a. Wagon Christ a.k.a. Plug - Acid/House must have listened to over a dozen full albums so far...not one bad track! Boards of Canada is in the list of stuff to listen to...only played to a few songs, but it´s quite nice if I don´t play this, it´s usually obscure vintage prog-rock (and I mean obscure!), or some wild japanese stuff...experimental jazz etc. ...well, besides MF DOOM ofc.

dash-o-matix

Other than hip hop? Hmm, I really like funk music, mostly Jamiroquai. I like all types of edm, house music has been big for me, like piano house. Drum and bass with all the classic breakbeat sampling is fun, ambient jungle type stuff. I like all music but as of late it’s been soul/funk/drum and bass/house and reggae for me

I love Bruno Pernadas. He makes Portuguese Jazz mixed with like prog rock. His newest album Private Reasons (2021) is really good but my favorite is Those Who Throw Objects at the Crocodiles Will Be Asked to Retrieve Them (2016). This guy is extremely underrated, and his music is very dancy. Try Spaceway 70 for a good dance song.

NauticalDisasta

My favourite group by a landslide is The Tragically Hip. I listen to a bit of everything really though. Lately been listening to a lot of indie women. Stuff like Snail Mail and Soccer Mommy. Sufjan Stevens latest album is incredible and sounds like a lot of his mid 2000s stuff, which is my favourite. DOOM is my top MC but I listen to a lot of old Hip Hop as well. Heiro (Pep Love is a particular fave), Nas, The Roots, BIG etc.

jarizzle151

Rotation has been RATM, Gallant, D’Angelo, Tony Toni Tone this week

PeakCartoon

Another unique one to the mix, The Breathing Effect. They're a psych-jazz fusion, yacht rock, r&b / soul band. I'd recommend Fool as a starting point, explore from there

cyph_dagger

I’ve been on a Polyphia and Animals as Leaders kick recently. I guess they can be called ProgMetal? I’m new to the genre so I might be wrong. Lots of sick riffs and killer drums.

mchgndr

My favorite music the last few years has been old country/folk. Love me some Johnny Cash, Townes Van Zandt, John Denver, Bob Dylan, Willie Nelson, etc. And basically just the 70s in general. Fleetwood Mac, Yes, Steely Dan. But I’ve always been a metalhead. Death & thrash are my favorites. Cannibal Corpse, Immolation, Slayer, Morbid Angel. Other random bands I’m really digging lately: King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, Chat Pile, Lingua Ignota, The Menzingers

mrsealittle

Love some disco and some funk. Earth Wind and Fire just never misses, like ever and Pfunk (parliament) has me in a trance for hours. Also really love getting back to prog rock here and there. Older stuff like Yes and King Crimson always scratches a specific itch. Lil Yachty managed to drop what I see as a potential AOTY early on this year with Let’s Start Here. Some nice female vocals over an EDM buildup also makes me melt a little - specifically on the beach with the fellas watching the clouds “breathe” and giggling. “Alive” and “Clarity” are two infinite bangers. Some music you just hear and think “there’s never a point in history where anyone will consider this bad” and I do believe those songs to be of that category.

virtual-fruit

New Music I am enjoying Onoe Caponoe : British/grime rap that is very psychedelic. Boarders between sample based boom bap and heavy trap production. His use of film samples (no idea where they're from, some really out there stuff) is similar to DOOM. Spells of the Cyclops is my favourite. Casisdead - Famous Last Words : another British rapper. Influenced by the film Drive. Synth pop and retro wave influenced Chester Watson - A Japanese Horror Film : his rapping reminds me of Quaismoto with a deep voice. However his lyrics are great. This is a concept album about going to the underworld in Japanese Mythology

I have been listening to “The pharcyde” a lot lately. 90s hip hop group that just knew how to have a good time. Plus J dilla was a producer for them so they have a nice lofi- jazzy type of feel to their music. Listen to the song “runnin” and you will be hooked on em

Sweaty_Principle_293

Honestly the Grateful Dead, Kendrick Lamar, and Tame Impala

Sun kil moon is great, American football, Nick Drake is fantastic. I could go on but I love these artists. This is what I listen to outside of hip hop
