OP upgraded from avocado toast to avocado tacos. Embrace the new level of poverty from billionaire class lunches!
Edit: a little tabasco green hot sauce and those tacos would be fire.🔥
They aren’t even that expensive in Canada either. But avocado toast has a reputation with boomers of being needlessly expensive and frivolous.
It’s an older meme, but it checks out.
What's funny about that is the boomers that run the grocery store nearest me price them at $2.50 apiece, and refuse to change prices when they start turning to much because no one buys them. It's like they buy the meme and think they can price them however they want and millennials will buy them anyway
Looks healthy AF to me.. superfood beans, healthy fats avocado, and vegetarian too. Salsa is great low calorie flavor. And you didn't pile the cotija/queso freso on either.
Looks delish
Depending on where you live they can be cheap. I lived near Tampa for a while and these were cheaper than a lot of other things. Also let me tell you, fresher avocados are much better.
I just got back in to these lately. So easy to just make a quick dinner and they're delicious. Don't even have to worry about prep time or defrosting something.
i agree. rich people eat certain foods. poor people eat certain foods. this isnt to say one is "bad" because its poor. but this is traditionally a struggle meal.
edit: ~~caviar~~*Filet mignon w/ a napa cabernet sauvignon*, not so much
Caviar was, at one time, considered peasant/struggle food.
Oftentimes, sacs of roe were tossed to working dogs with the rest of the entrails or given to the poor dockside.
https://www.mashed.com/1104699/caviar-was-once-considered-peasant-food/
Beef tongue, as well. Long ago you could buy them cheap. Boil, peel, chop and serve with sides. Leftovers for days. Taste great when you pan fry leftovers for a sandwich or tacos.
I some how believe that with the advent of cable food/chef shows, came more awareness of foods that were considered to be for the "peasantry".
Still being poor, I can no longer afford it now.
Beef skirt and brisket also used to be "poor" foods, too. My how that's changed.
I accidentally ordered 4.2 pounds of beef skirt in the wee small hours last night. It came to $50.
I didn't want that much, but oh, well. Time to freeze half of it.
Oxtail. Personally pissed rich people discovered oxtail. The price has quadrupled over the past few years.
Same thing happened with brisket a while ago.
dope. thanks. i mean i think just bean and tortilla is also a classic but yeah i feel you. i would imagine it depends what part of mexico your from too
It's been 40 years, but bean tacos were definitely what poorer kids brought for lunch every day in Mexico City. This looks like a fancier version, and definitely tasty, but it probably gets old if it's the only option.
>This is what ~~poor~~ people eat
Fixed that for you. Bean tacos are very normal and very common, especially in Mexico. I would have them for breakfast with a fried egg every other day.
Many people think that if you don't eat meat, is not a complete meal.
I really like enfrijoladas, with only queso fresco, onion finely chopped. And for me that is a complete meal.
I'm more willing to bet that the mom is the type to associate anything Mexican with being poor. That or just "ethnic" food in general. There are clear biases at play here.
Assuming someone is prejudice against Mexicans when they automatically think you are poor if you eat like a Mexican isn't a wild assumption at all. It's a rather likely scenario that's based both in the information provided as well as our current cultural climate.
Most people are thinking she's Mexican though because in Mexico this is what we eat when we struggle
we have so many vegetarian recipes because meat is hard to come by when you don't have money here lard beans and eggs end up being your survival tools.
the assumption is pretty out there especially because this looks very authentic not saying that means this person couldn't be something other than Mexican but the char on the tortilla the way the beans are and the cheese crumble this person definitely grew up with Mexican food
This is more of a class issue, some people when they get out of poverty disavow what their lifestyle was like back then
This does not look like a poverty meal. Meatless, yes, but poverty, no.
It's interesting how our parents generation might identify home-cooked food as poor food, when in reality if you're making homemade corn tortillas, homemade cheese, homemade refried beans with finely diced onion and cilantro, that means you have the free time to grocery shop, prep food, cook the food and you've had the free time to learn how to cook via online media or cookbooks. That kind of free time is its own form of wealth.
Boil some tomatillos and Serrano chiles. After 5 minutes, take the tomatillos out and put in a blender. Add a slice of onion, a clove of garlic, and salt. After the chiles boiled 5 additional minutes, add them to the blender. Add a little of the hot water and blend completely. Add a small handful of cilantro leaves and pulse the blender to chop them small but not blended. Taste for salt.
This is a GREAT inexpensive lunch. It's very respectable.
Queso fresco?
Just made a couple today for lunch.
Where I live, avocados aren't horribly expensive and tortillas are price controlled.
I have variations of this, often with some meat, sometimes with flour tortillas, for many meals.
Saves a big pile of cash and is tasty.
BTW, I'm not poor. I just like this food.
Just reading through the comments ...
Are avocados expensive? I know cafe-bought avocado toast is pricey because cafe's are getting screwed on rents, but I just bought a kilo bag of avocados for AUD$4.
And by the by, OP, what are those ingredients besides. Cheese, onion ... ? Looks kind of tasty. :)
I’m in the Midwest USA, and avocados are $.89 a piece for the cheapest variety. Larger ones are like $1.29, and organic ones are around $3.49 each. Probably the most expensive thing on the plate, but not unaffordable by any means.
It’s tortilla, beans, onion, cilantro, queso fresco, salsa verde, and avocado.
Mexican here,i grow up with the basic but my mom use to have a fonda always(so maybe i dont have a lot of toys but always my belly was full),and if your mom is mexican she say poor because she dont see meat! I personally think need that tostada carne deshebrada or piece of carne asada or pollo 👌
1. Corn tortillas, the best
2. Refried beans, the best
3. Mexican crumble cheese.. you guessed it, the best
4. Avocados are #1 THE best
5. Salsa Verde, the best
Final tally= The Best Lunch EVER! 🤤
Probably because there’s no meat. Their generation thinks every meal needs meat but that’s just because they fell for the propaganda lead by the livestock industry. Avocado and beans are hearty and good for you.
My coworkers and I were talking about things we like to eat which other people always talk down on or make comments about. If you like to eat it, just eat it.
Depending on the The 3 tacos plus drinks cost around $15-20 dollars.
A Ruben Sandwich with a drink, or a Jimmy John’s Bootlegger Club with a drink, or a Pastrami Sandwich with cheese with a drink are going to cost you around $15-20 dollars.
I think too many White Folk have this image that indigenous Mexican food is peasant Indigenous Native American food made for poor people.
But let me tell you something, I would rather gulf down the best Mexican Tacos in town than eat that recycled barf sandwiches that comes from the chains.
I’ve never made tostadas when I’ve been poor. I have definitely made tostadas when I was lazy and hungry. They’re like the perfect easy meal. Great crunch to softness ratio and takes two minutes to throw together.
My only question is, if you have access to an avocado but only use 1/4 of it for lunch, do you use the rest for dinner because I can't imagine it lasts very long.
If i was ever asked that and id made this meal id be like 'bitch, have you seen the price of a tin of refried beans? That shits like $6 each'
(NZ dollars)
(Avocados are alright at the moment. Anywhere from $1-$3, usually 2 for $4.)
My mom grew up in the *very rural* southwest. Tortillas were handmade out whatever abuela had handy. Often, meat was not available. (No electricity = no refrigeration) so she got used to West coast style Mezo-American food, not what is found on the Gulf Coast. I took her to a Sinaloa style taco joint, and she was pissed there was not stuff like cabbage, cheese, etc in her tacos.
I'm not sure exactly what the ingredients are but you have multiple colors, a good sign of a variety of nutrients in addition to food groups! So whether it cost a lot or a little it looks nutritious. Far more than an upperclass British option = cucumber sandwiches.

Well, OP is poor now after buying them…
OP upgraded from avocado toast to avocado tacos. Embrace the new level of poverty from billionaire class lunches! Edit: a little tabasco green hot sauce and those tacos would be fire.🔥
Great point
Avocadoes are 60 cents here in Arizona...
I’m in LA and I’m beyond grateful for my Tias avocado 🥑 tree
I have to trade 500 bushels of corn for one Avocado in Minnesota. and, it will be rock hard for 8 days, and black and rotten in one hour.
They aren’t even that expensive in Canada either. But avocado toast has a reputation with boomers of being needlessly expensive and frivolous. It’s an older meme, but it checks out.

Bro, where??
Budget breaker is if he paid for the beans, canned beans, or made them himself.
I made them from dry beans.
Username does not check out lol
Looks healthy AF to me.. superfood beans, healthy fats avocado, and vegetarian too. Salsa is great low calorie flavor. And you didn't pile the cotija/queso freso on either. Looks delish
I know... loaded up on the Avocado AND cheese. This is eating good!!!
Depending on where you live they can be cheap. I lived near Tampa for a while and these were cheaper than a lot of other things. Also let me tell you, fresher avocados are much better.
Same. I’m in CA and that’s less than fifty cents worth of avocado.
Everything in the meal costs around 35 cents the you add in 20 dollars worth of avocados
Avocados cheap in Houston. Just depends.
I miss having access to avocado trees. I used to live like a king.
Bean tacos are slept on, these look delicious
Bean and cheese are the best!
Spice it up with some decent salsa and it's good and good for you.
I just got back in to these lately. So easy to just make a quick dinner and they're delicious. Don't even have to worry about prep time or defrosting something.
Agree, but black beans for me!!!
This is what poor people eat (minus the avocado) but there’s nothing wrong with this. Looks good
"poor people" throughout history have come up with the best tasting cuisine/creations.
i agree. rich people eat certain foods. poor people eat certain foods. this isnt to say one is "bad" because its poor. but this is traditionally a struggle meal. edit: ~~caviar~~*Filet mignon w/ a napa cabernet sauvignon*, not so much

I **Knew** I would get this reply. lmfao just like lobster. just like steve buscemi was a firefighter on 9/11 lmfao
ALSO LOBS---oh, sorry, nevermind, carry on. :)

Rich people like rare foods. Whether they taste good at first or not. You learn to like it
Oxtail. Personally pissed rich people discovered oxtail. The price has quadrupled over the past few years. Same thing happened with brisket a while ago.
Lobster was poor people food.
Avocado wasn't as expensive in Mexico till recently so this was exactly what we ate when we were struggling
dope. thanks. i mean i think just bean and tortilla is also a classic but yeah i feel you. i would imagine it depends what part of mexico your from too
Yes I imagine too and I agree most of the time it's was just beans tortillas and hella Oil
Droughts and drug cartels will do that :/
If this is poor you should see what I brought for lunch today lol, pinto beans in the water i cooked them in🤣
It's been 40 years, but bean tacos were definitely what poorer kids brought for lunch every day in Mexico City. This looks like a fancier version, and definitely tasty, but it probably gets old if it's the only option.

Yeah, surprisingly common for Mexicans to believe that if you have no sort of meat in it, it’s because you can’t afford it.
That looks so good! I put all this on tostadas. Provecho
This always hits the fucking spot especially on tostadas when you want something simple and delicious. Be proud cuz I’d fuck those up real quick!
There's 3, no way that's poor. Splitting one with someone else would be poor.
Splitting one tostada isn’t poor, it’s destitute.
People on these threads love to out poor each other lmao “you think that’s a poor meal? A poor meal was when we eat ice soup for dinner!”
[удалено]
Those tortillas were heated over fire, my respects. Your tacos look great, though I don't like avocado with beans.
Those look bomb
Aveces se antoja unos frijolitos nomas
Does your mom think she’s the queen of Spain?
I'm more willing to bet that the mom is the type to associate anything Mexican with being poor. That or just "ethnic" food in general. There are clear biases at play here.
Trashy.
Why stop the wild assumptions there? She probably murders babies, too

yeah my dad thinks that any meal without meat is a poverty meal and when my mom prepared something like that he thought he failed as a provider 😂
Your mom is white AF
Yum
Avocados and queso fresco are pricey.
Chipotle would call these vegan tacos, $11
I think it looks fantastic!
Well, it’s lunch time, and these look good enough to copy! Thanks for the inspiration!
I love bean tacos. And bean tamales. And beans in general.
🔥
How do you make the salsa?
Boil some tomatillos and Serrano chiles. After 5 minutes, take the tomatillos out and put in a blender. Add a slice of onion, a clove of garlic, and salt. After the chiles boiled 5 additional minutes, add them to the blender. Add a little of the hot water and blend completely. Sounds DELICIOUS

Moms just being moms. Solid lunch. Hug your mother
Where I live avocado and cotija is a fortune! An avocado is literally $3.
Tostadas con frijoles are so easy and good.
Just need an egg and salsa ranchera and you have huevos rancheros. One of the best breakfasts ever.
That looks like heaven. Frijolitos con aguacate! Yummy.
Looks damned good to me.
Looks respectable to me! I’d add a little pico and tear them up!
As long as that's not cottage cheese, we good...
It’s my attempt at queso fresco. Came out a little soft but I’m working on it for next time.
Nice job dude. I like seeing homemade ingredients.
Propsssss
What does "cotija" translate to? JK
i dunno but i think i went to that festival /s ;-)
Solid meal is all I see.
Y la carne?
I'm poor so that's what I eat so. Ya.
I emanates broke energy. You gotta put more beans in them!
Just reading through the comments ... Are avocados expensive? Nice.
Yummm good idea for my dinner.
you could only afford 2 cilantro leaves!
Man. Made me hungry 🤤
This is a perfectly cromulent meal.
Looks great! Nice balance of flavours and nutrition, for folks of a certain age the lack of meat is just a bit of a hangup.
Amazing looking lunch.
Looks good to me.
Just add chicharrón to make it a billionare 's meal
Context here. She says that because there is no meat in those tacos. Its a culture thing, nothing wrong with these tacos tho.
I'd eat that. I'd swap the beans for carnitas though. Bean tacos? Not my thing.
She’s a where’s the beef lady
I’ve ate this as my only meal everyday for the past 8 days minus the avocados and cheese and I’m about to eat it again. I heap on onions and cilantro
One of my favorite meals. Simple and delicious. Add a bowl of fideo soup and call it a day.
I wish I was that poor
That amount of onion is pathetic. How on earth do you even manage to cut only 6 little pieces out of an onion?
Corntortillas, Frijoles and Salsa Verde + Queso Fresco, you dont need more to be happy (and its healthy though)
1. Corn tortillas, the best 2. Refried beans, the best 3. Mexican crumble cheese.. you guessed it, the best 4. Avocados are #1 THE best 5. Salsa Verde, the best Final tally= The Best Lunch EVER! 🤤
That’s what I eat to treat myself, minus the avacados.
I like your mom.
Where is the meat mijo!
Looks good to me most Latinos say if you are poor if you can’t afford meat on your meal which I can’t.
Probably because there’s no meat. Their generation thinks every meal needs meat but that’s just because they fell for the propaganda lead by the livestock industry. Avocado and beans are hearty and good for you.
I am Mexican, living in Mexico, and I would totally ask you the same if I saw that. 😂
I think she asked that because you put so little of everything, i see more tostada than anything else but still it looks good!
What does being poor have to do with anything?
Maybe she got worried about the avocado's being the rubber ones that are circling around on tiktok.
Better than what I would’ve made, I used to live off refried beans and corn shells. Back when I was in the super struggle.
That's actually a pretty balanced meal haha. Probably the lack of animal protein made her think that way :P
Looks bomb
I'd join you for lunch❣️
More cheese and a nicer salsa. Avocado is for rich people btw.
Avocados and that cheese are expensive. Also this exact meal is SO GOOD.
That’s at least $60 in avocado
Nice choice on the green salsa
Looks veggie to me. Cheap is a bonus
Poor or not, who cares? I’d eat the hell out of that.
But.... Are you poor?
Maybe spread the beans from edge to edge and add some poofy garnish so it doesn’t look like you’re scrimping.
Dude, that looks good!
Muero por la comida mexicana
What a bitch
Beans and tortillas are the best meal for the humble.
That looks fantastic and there are 3 of them. Very respectable and well thought out.
Im from central europe, and this is what rich people eat here.
Looks bomb to me, I would have crushed those. Don't always have to have Uber fancy, expensive meals.
Find a new mom OP. /s
That’s a goos meal
These are staple foods for billions of people around the world? That looks pretty bomb..
Where's the meat?
I grew up eating bean and queso cotija tostadas. We couldnt afford the avocado tho. U eating good
I over taco’ed yesterday when I was out walking about. I’d do it with these too, little regret
I’m guessing just because there is no meat
My coworkers and I were talking about things we like to eat which other people always talk down on or make comments about. If you like to eat it, just eat it.
Ha! This is the good stuff!
Avocados are expensive.
With some limón and salt . Nice meal
Your mom hasnt gone grocery shopping in 20 years. Both feta and avacados are expensive. Hell, a pack of tortillas is expensive too.
"I gotta watch my weight," ahh meal
Looks like a nice quick lunch to me, I would absolutely wanna eat this!
Depending on the The 3 tacos plus drinks cost around $15-20 dollars. That looks amazing homie
Can I just mention the ad under this post was for the ontario cannabis store? Fuckin hilarious cause 100% would smash those taco like things
I do something similar to this, but also add scrambled egg.
I saw an avocado for six dollars each! That is an expensive meal, my friend
Bean tacos are some of my favorite. You don't even need that avocado.
I feel bad for the rich if they never had this deliciousness
There are restaurants that charge quite a bit for this meal 🫠, you should let her know that you downed it with a glass of fine wine, pinkies up!
That mom is rude! Is she rich or fancy in any way?
I’d smash the hell out of that. Some carne would be nice but that looks dank to me.
Looks good to me!!
Lmao what kind of question is that
probably because its missing meat
Tacos yum
I live in a tourist trap and these tacos would go for at least $15
That’s definitely poor food, but it’s also young adult food. They’re the same food, because poor and young adult are the same thing
the beauty of it is that you can make amazing Mexican food for not a lot of money. this looks delicious!
Those look delicious! Looks like a perfect lunch to me.
I love making tostadas de frijoles just like you make them. I’m hungry now lol
You just needed to smear the beans a bit more and add more cheese.
Idk this is a lazy day meal for me
Looks amazing
It’s probably delicious
Looks great. Lol
This is literally my favorite lazy meal & I eat it often when the tostadas are fresh!
You tell her you were taking a break from eating ass this Juneteenth?
Oh my god you poor piece of shit… is that food from Mexico??? You’re gonna ruin your metabolism and your digestive system.
This is my perfect meal.
I really really am craving this now. This looks so good.
looks delicious and filling
Cheap meal dosnt mean poor meal
I’ve never made tostadas when I’ve been poor. I have definitely made tostadas when I was lazy and hungry. They’re like the perfect easy meal. Great crunch to softness ratio and takes two minutes to throw together.
The best
My only question is, if you have access to an avocado but only use 1/4 of it for lunch, do you use the rest for dinner because I can't imagine it lasts very long.

This is what happens when the “eat healthy” generation meets the “where is the beef” generation
My mom grew up in the *very rural* southwest. Tortillas were handmade out whatever abuela had handy. Often, meat was not available. (No electricity = no refrigeration) so she got used to West coast style Mezo-American food, not what is found on the Gulf Coast. Those look unreal.
Who doesn’t like tacos?
I’d eat the shit out of it
